Search

Disintegrating multiple systems have been previously discovered from kinematic studies of the $\it Hipparcos$ catalogue. They are presumably the result of dynamical encounters taking place in the Galactic disk between single/multiple systems. In this paper, we aim to expand the search for such systems, to study their properties, as well as to characterize possible low-mass ejecta (i.e. brown dwarfs and planets). We have assembled a list of 15 candidate systems using astrometry from the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (later upgraded with $\it Gaia$ DR3), and here we present the discovery and follow-up of 5 of them. We have obtained DECam imaging for all 5 systems and by combining near-infrared photometry and proper motion, we searched for ultra-cool ejected components. We find that the system consisting of TYC 7731-1951-1, TYC 7731-2128 AB, and TYC 7731-1995-1ABC?, contains one very promising ultra-cool dwarf candidate. We present a photometric and spectroscopic analysis of the ultra-luminous and slowly evolving 03fg-like Type Ia SN 2021zny. Our observational campaign starts from $\sim5.3$ hours after explosion (making SN 2021zny one of the earliest observed members of its class), with dense multi-wavelength coverage from a variety of ground- and space-based telescopes, and is concluded with a nebular spectrum $\sim10$ months after peak brightness. SN 2021zny displayed several characteristics of its class, such as the peak brightness ($M_{B}=-19.95$ mag), the slow decline ($\Delta m_{15}(B) = 0.62$ mag), the blue early-time colours, the low ejecta velocities and the presence of significant unburned material above the photosphere. However, a flux excess for the first $\sim1.5$ days after explosion is observed in four photometric bands, making SN 2021zny the third 03fg-like event with this distinct behavior, while its $+313$ d spectrum shows prominent [O I] lines, a very unusual characteristic of thermonuclear SNe. The early flux excess can be explained as the outcome of the interaction of the ejecta with $\sim0.04\:\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ of H/He-poor circumstellar material at a distance of $\sim10^{12}$ cm, while the low ionization state of the late-time spectrum reveals low abundances of stable iron-peak elements. All our observations are in accordance with a progenitor system of two carbon/oxygen white dwarfs that undergo a merger event, with the disrupted white dwarf ejecting carbon-rich circumstellar material prior to the primary white dwarf detonation., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Spectroscopically, tidal disruption events (TDEs) are characterized by broad (∼104 km s−1) emission lines and show a large diversity as well as different line profiles. After carefully and consistently performing a series of data reduction tasks including host galaxy light subtraction, we present here the first detailed, spectroscopic population study of 16 optical and UV TDEs. We study a number of emission lines prominent among TDEs including Hydrogen, Helium, and Bowen lines and we quantify their evolution with time in terms of line luminosities, velocity widths, and velocity offsets. We report a time lag between the peaks of the optical light curves and the peak luminosity of Hα spanning between ∼7 and 45 days. If interpreted as light echoes, these lags correspond to distances of ∼2 − 12 × 1016 cm, which are one to two orders of magnitudes larger than the estimated blackbody radii (RBB) of the same TDEs and we discuss the possible origin of this surprisingly large discrepancy. We also report time lags for the peak luminosity of the He I 5876 Å line, which are smaller than the ones of Hα for H TDEs and similar or larger for N III Bowen TDEs. We report that N III Bowen TDEs have lower Hα velocity widths compared to the rest of the TDEs in our sample and we also find that a strong X-ray to optical ratio might imply weakening of the line widths. Furthermore, we study the evolution of line luminosities and ratios with respect to their radii (RBB) and temperatures (TBB). We find a linear relationship between Hα luminosity and the RBB (Lline ∝ RBB) and potentially an inverse power-law relation with TBB (Lline ∝ TBB−β), leading to weaker Hα emission for TBB ≥ 25 000 K. The He II/He I ratio becomes large at the same temperatures, possibly pointing to an ionization effect. The He II/Hα ratio becomes larger as the photospheric radius recedes, implying a stratified photosphere where Helium lies deeper than Hydrogen. We suggest that the large diversity of the spectroscopic features seen in TDEs along with their X-ray properties can potentially be attributed to viewing angle effects., We thank Tom Holoien for providing us with the spectra of AT2018zr. Only a few wide-orbit planets around old stars have been detected, which limits our statistical understanding of this planet population. Following the systematic search for planetary anomalies in microlensing events found by the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network, we present the discovery and analysis of three events that were initially thought to contain wide-orbit planets. The anomalous feature in the light curve of OGLE-2018-BLG-0383 is caused by a planet with mass ratio q = 2.1 × 10−4 and a projected separation s = 2.45. This makes it the lowest mass-ratio microlensing planet at such wide orbits. The other two events, KMT-2018-BLG-0998 and OGLE-2018-BLG-0271, are shown to be stellar binaries (q > 0.1) with rather close (s < 1) separations. We briefly discuss the properties of known wide-orbit microlensing planets and show that the survey observations are crucial in discovering and further statistically constraining such a planet population.

The amount of cosmic dust contributed by stellar sources in galaxies at all cosmic epochs remains a controversial topic, particularly whether or not supernovae (SNe) have an important role to play given the dust-hostile environments provided by SNe. To date, freshly-formed dust has been observed in a handful of core collapse (CC) SNe, both in the ejecta in-situ and in the interactions between the ejecta and circumstellar medium (CSM). As yet, there exists no clear observational evidence for dust formation in Type Ia SNe despite predictions of $3×10^{-4}$- $0.2$ Msun of dust forming per Ia. Here we report evidence of dust formation in the ejecta-CSM interaction in the Type Ia (SNIa) SN2018evt just three years after the explosion, characterized by a staggering rise in the mid-infrared (MIR) flux accompanied by an accelerated decline in the optical. This hypothesis is strengthened by the concurrent evolution of the profiles of the Hα emission lines. A preexisting hydrogen-rich torus which itself may be dusty before the SN explosion, provides a natural explanation of the observed data. SN 2018evt is the first SNIa with clear evidence of both dust destruction and formation in its ejecta and surroundings. The amount of the newly formed dust follows a steep power law rise of index 4 with time after the explosion. This steep rise indicates that the newly formed dust is formed in the SN ejecta, which is compressed by the shock interaction with the CSM.

We study the three-dimensional structure of the Milky Way using 65,981 Mira variable stars discovered by the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE) survey. The spatial distribution of the Mira stars is analyzed with a model containing three barred components that include the X-shaped boxy component in the Galactic center (GC), and an axisymmetric disk. We take into account the distance uncertainties by implementing the Bayesian hierarchical inference method. The distance to the GC is $R_0 = 7.66 \pm 0.01 \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.39 \mathrm{(sys.)}$ kpc, while the inclination of the major axis of the bulge to the Sun-GC line-of-sight is $\theta = 20.2^\circ \pm 0.6^\circ \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.7^\circ \mathrm{(sys.)} $. We present, for the first time, a detailed three-dimensional map of the Milky Way composed of young and intermediate-age stellar populations. Our analysis provides independent evidence for both the X-shaped bulge component and the flaring disk (being plausibly warped). We provide the complete dataset of properties of Miras that were used for calculations in this work. The table includes: mean brightness and amplitudes in nine photometric bands (covering a range of wavelength from 0.5 to 12 $\mu$m), photometric chemical type, estimated extinction, and calculated distance with its uncertainty for each Mira variable. Dong et al., A thermonuclear explosion triggered by a He-shell detonation on a carbon–oxygen white-dwarf core has been predicted to have strong UV line blanketing at early times due to the iron-group elements produced during He-shell burning. We present the photometric and spectroscopic observations of SN 2016dsg, a subluminous peculiar Type I supernova consistent with a thermonuclear explosion involving a thick He shell. With a redshift of 0.04, the i-band peak absolute magnitude is derived to be around −17.5. The object is located far away from its host, an early-type galaxy, suggesting it originated from an old stellar population. The spectra collected after the peak are unusually red, show strong UV line blanketing and weak O i λ7773 absorption lines, and do not evolve significantly over 30 days. An absorption line around 9700–10500 Å is detected in the near-infrared spectrum and is likely from the unburnt He in the ejecta. The spectroscopic evolution is consistent with the thermonuclear explosion models for a sub-Chandrasekhar-mass white dwarf with a thick He shell, while the photometric evolution is not well described by existing models., Research by Y.D., S.V., and N.M.R is supported by NSF grants AST1813176 and AST-2008108. Outbursts from cataclysmic variables, such as dwarf novae (DNe), are prevalent throughout the galaxy and are known to emit strongly in the ultraviolet (UV). However, the UV emission of DNe has not been studied extensively compared with the optical. Characterising in detail the physical processes responsible for DN outburst behaviour requires further UV data. Here we report, as part of our recently launched Transient UV Objects Project (TUVO), the discovery of TUVO-21acq, a new transient which we detected in the UV using data from the Ultraviolet Optical Telescope aboard Swift. We detected two separate outbursts and used the UV data to constrain source properties, focusing on the amplitudes and timescales of the outbursts. During the first outburst the source increased in brightness by >4.1, >2.4, and >3.5 magnitudes and during the second outburst by >4.4, >3.4, and >3.6 magnitudes in the UVW1, UVM2, and UVW2 bands, respectively. The outburst durations were in the range 6-21 days and 11-46 days, and the recurrence time is, 10 pages, 6 figures. The tidal forces of a black hole can rip apart a star that passes too close to it, resulting in a stellar Tidal Disruption Event (TDE, (1)). In some such encounters, the black hole can launch a powerful relativistic jet (2-6). If this jet fortuitously aligns with our line of sight, the overall brightness is Doppler boosted by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, such on-axis relativistic TDEs have the potential to unveil cosmological (redshift z>1) quiescent black holes and are ideal test beds to understand the radiative mechanisms operating in super-Eddington jets. Here, we present multi-wavelength (X-ray, UV, optical, and radio) observations of the optically discovered transient AT 2022cmc at z=1.193 (7). Its unusual X-ray properties, including a peak observed luminosity of >1048 erg s-1, systematic variability on timescales as short as 1000 seconds, and overall duration lasting more than 30 days in the rest-frame are traits associated with relativistic TDEs. This makes AT 2022cmc only the fourth member of this rare class and the first one identified in the optical and with well-sampled optical data. The X-ray to radio spectral energy distributions spanning 5-50 days after discovery can be explained as synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet (radio), synchrotron self-Compton (X-rays), and thermal emission similar to that seen in low-redshift TDEs (UV/optical). Our modeling implies a beamed, highly relativistic jet akin to blazars (e.g., (8,9)) but requires extreme matter-domination, i.e, high ratio of electron-to-magnetic field energy densities in the jet, and challenges our theoretical understanding of jets. This work provides one of the best multi-wavelength datasets of a newborn relativistic jet to date and will be invaluable for testing more sophisticated jet models, and for identifying more such events in transient surveys.

Quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) are very-high-amplitude bursts of X-ray radiation recurring every few hours and originating near the central supermassive black holes of galactic nuclei1,2. It is currently unknown what triggers these events, how long they last and how they are connected to the physical properties of the inner accretion flows. Previously, only two such sources were known, found either serendipitously or in archival data1,2, with emission lines in their optical spectra classifying their nuclei as hosting an actively accreting supermassive black hole3,4. Here we report observations of QPEs in two further galaxies, obtained with a blind and systematic search of half of the X-ray sky. The optical spectra of these galaxies show no signature of black hole activity, indicating that a pre-existing accretion flow that is typical of active galactic nuclei is not required to trigger these events. Indeed, the periods, amplitudes and profiles of the QPEs reported here are inconsistent with current models that invoke radiation-pressure-driven instabilities in the accretion disk5–9. Instead, QPEs might be driven by an orbiting compact object. Furthermore, their observed properties require the mass of the secondary object to be much smaller than that of the main body10, and future X-ray observations may constrain possible changes in their period owing to orbital evolution. This model could make QPEs a viable candidate for the electromagnetic counterparts of so-called extreme-mass-ratio inspirals11–13, with considerable implications for multi-messenger astrophysics and cosmology14,15., X-ray quasi-periodic eruptions are detected from two previously inactive galaxies, with observations suggesting that the very-high-amplitude X-ray bursts may arise from an orbiting compact object.

We report the complete statistical planetary sample from the prime fields ($Γ\geq 2~{\rm hr}^{-1}$) of the 2019 Korea Microlensing Telescope Network (KMTNet) microlensing survey. We develop the optimized KMTNet AnomalyFinder algorithm and apply it to the 2019 KMTNet prime fields. We find a total of 14 homogeneously selected planets and report the analysis of three planetary events, KMT-2019-BLG-(1042,1552,2974). The planet-host mass ratios, $q$, for the three planetary events are $6.34 \times 10^{-4}, 4.89 \times 10^{-3}$ and $6.18 \times 10^{-4}$, respectively. A Bayesian analysis indicates the three planets are all cold giant planets beyond the snow line of their host stars. The 13 planets are basically uniform in $\log q$ over the range $-5.0 < \log q < -1.5$. This result suggests that the planets below $q_{\rm break} = 1.7 \times 10^{-4}$ proposed by the MOA-II survey may be more common than previously believed. We present the data and analysis of SN 2018gjx, an unusual low-luminosity transient with three distinct spectroscopic phases. Phase I shows a hot blue spectrum with signatures of ionised circumstellar material (CSM), Phase II has the appearance of broad SN features, consistent with those seen in a Type IIb supernova at maximum light, and Phase III is that of a supernova interacting with helium-rich CSM, similar to a Type Ibn supernova. This event provides an apparently rare opportunity to view the inner workings of an interacting supernova. The observed properties can be explained by the explosion of a star in an aspherical CSM. The initial light is emitted from an extended CSM (~ 4000 Rsun), which ionises the exterior unshocked material. Some days after, the SN photosphere envelops this region, leading to the appearance of a SN IIb. Over time, the photosphere recedes in velocity space, revealing interaction between the supernova ejecta and the CSM that partially obscures the supernova nebular phase. Modelling of the initial spectrum reveals a surface composition consistent with compact H-deficient Wolf-Rayet and LBV stars. Such configurations may not be unusual, with SNe IIb being known to have signs of interaction so at least some SNe IIb and SNe Ibn may be the same phenomena viewed from different angles or, possibly with differing CSM configurations., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of ASASSN-18jd (AT 2018bcb), a luminous optical/UV/X-ray transient located in the nucleus of the galaxy 2MASX J22434289--1659083 at $z=0.1192$. Over the year after discovery, Swift UVOT photometry shows the UV SED of the transient to be well modeled by a slowly shrinking blackbody with temperature $T \sim 2.5 \times 10^{4} \rm ~K$, a maximum observed luminosity of $L_\text{max} = 4.5^{+0.6}_{-0.3} \times 10^{44} \rm ~erg ~s^{-1}$, and a radiated energy of $E = 9.6^{+1.1}_{-0.6} \times 10^{51} \rm ~erg$. X-ray data from Swift XRT and XMM-Newton show a transient, variable X-ray flux with blackbody and power-law components that fade by nearly an order of magnitude over the following year. Optical spectra show strong, roughly constant broad Balmer emission as well as transient features attributable to He II, N III-V, O III, and coronal Fe. While ASASSN-18jd shares similarities with Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs), it is also similar to the newly-discovered nuclear transients seen in quiescent galaxies and faint Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs)., 24 pages, 16 figures, 2 machine-readable tables (included as ancillary txt files)

We conduct a systematic investigation of the microlensing data collected during the previous observation seasons for the purpose of reanalyzing anomalous lensing events with no suggested plausible models. We find that two anomalous lensing events OGLE-2018-BLG-0584 and KMT-2018-BLG-2119 cannot be explained with the usual models based on either a binary-lens single-source (2L1S) or a single-lens binary-source (1L2S) interpretation. We test the feasibility of explaining the light curves with more sophisticated models by adding an extra lens (3L1S model) or a source (2L2S model) component to the 2L1S lens-system configuration. We find that a 2L2S interpretation well explains the light curves of both events, for each of which there are a pair of solutions resulting from the close and wide degeneracy. For the event OGLE-2018-BLG-0584, the source is a binary composed of two K-type stars, and the lens is a binary composed of two M dwarfs. For KMT-2018-BLG-2119, the source is a binary composed of two dwarfs of G and K spectral types, and the lens is a binary composed of a low-mass M dwarf and a brown dwarf., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We present early observations and analysis of the double-peaked Type IIb supernova (SN IIb) 2021zby. $TESS$ captured the prominent early shock cooling peak of SN 2021zby within the first $\sim$10 days after explosion with a 30-minute cadence. We present optical and near-infrared spectral series of SN 2021zby, including three spectra during the shock cooling phase. Using a multi-band model fit, we find that the inferred properties of its progenitor are consistent with a red supergiant or yellow supergiant, with an envelope mass of $\sim$0.3-3.0 M$_\odot$ and an envelope radius of $\sim$50-350$ R_\odot$. These inferred progenitor properties are similar to those of other SNe IIb with double-peak feature, such as SNe 1993J, 2011dh, 2016gkg and 2017jgh. This study further validates the importance of the high cadence and early coverage in resolving the shape of the shock cooling light curve, while the multi-band observations, especially UV, is also necessary to fully constrain the progenitor properties., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJL

We report on the observations, analysis and interpretation of the microlensing event MOA-2019- BLG-008. The observed anomaly in the photometric light curve is best described through a binary lens model. In this model, the source did not cross caustics and no finite source effects were observed. Therefore the angular Einstein ring radius cannot be measured from the light curve alone. However, the large event duration, t E about 80 days, allows a precise measurement of the microlensing parallax. In addition to the constraints on the angular radius and the apparent brightness I s of the source, we employ the Besancon and GalMod galactic models to estimate the physical properties of the lens. We find excellent agreement between the predictions of the two Galactic models: the companion is likely a resident of the brown dwarf desert with a mass Mp about 30 MJup and the host is a main sequence dwarf star. The lens lies along the line of sight to the Galactic Bulge, at a distance of less then4 kpc. We estimate that in about 10 years, the lens and source will be separated by 55 mas, and it will be possible to confirm the exact nature of the lensing system by using high-resolution imaging from ground or space-based observatories., Comment: Accepted in AJ

We present a brief overview of a very extensive studies of the group of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) that transitioned to radio-loud state over the past few decades. The sample consists of twelve sources, both quasars and galaxies, showing the characteristics of gigahertz-peaked spectrum (GPS) objects undergoing relatively rapid changes, due to the evolution of their newly-born radio jets. Discussed objects also show a wide range of physical parameters such as bolometric luminosity, black hole mass and jet power, suggesting a great diversity among young active galactic nuclei and their hosts. Furthermore, we introduce a new observational project, the aim of which will be to investigate and gain a more in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of slow radio transients., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Stellar-mass black holes are the final remnants of stars born with more than 15 solar masses. Billions are expected to reside in the Local Group, yet only a few are known, mostly detected through X-rays emitted as they accrete material from a companion star. Here, we report on VFTS 243: a massive X-ray-faint binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. With an orbital period of 10.4 d, it comprises an O-type star of 25 solar masses and an unseen companion of at least nine solar masses. Our spectral analysis excludes a non-degenerate companion at a 5σ confidence level. The minimum companion mass implies that it is a black hole. No other X-ray-quiet black hole is unambiguously known outside our Galaxy. The (near-)circular orbit and kinematics of VFTS 243 imply that the collapse of the progenitor into a black hole was associated with little or no ejected material or black-hole kick. We report the discovery and analysis of a candidate triple-lens single-source (3L1S) microlensing event, OGLE-2019-BLG-1470. This event was first classified as a normal binary-lens single-source (2L1S) event, but a careful 2L1S modelling showed that it needs an additional lens or source to fit the observed data. It is found that the 3L1S model provides the best fit, but the binary-lens binary-source (2L2S) model is only disfavoured by $\Delta\chi^2 \simeq 18$. All of the feasible models include a planet with planet-to-host mass-ratios $10^{-3} \lesssim q \lesssim 10^{-2}$. A Bayesian analysis based on a Galactic model indicates that the planet is super-Jovian, and the projected host-planet separation is about 3 $\mathrm{au}$. Specifically, for the best-fit 3L1S model, the two stars have masses of $M_1=0.57^{+0.43}_{-0.32}M_{\odot}$, and $M_2=0.18^{+0.15}_{-0.10}M_{\odot}$, with projected separation of $1.3^{+0.5}_{-0.5}$ $\mathrm{au}$, and the planetary mass is $M_3=2.2^{+1.8}_{-1.3}M_{\rm{Jupiter}}$. For the 2L2S model, the masses of the host star and the planet are $0.55^{+0.44}_{-0.31}M_{\odot}$ and $4.6^{+3.7}_{-2.6}M_{\rm{Jupiter}}$, respectively. By investigating the properties of all known microlensing planets in binary systems, we find that all planets in binary systems published by the KMTNet survey are located inside the resonant caustics range with $q \gtrsim 2 \times 10^{-3}$, indicating the incompleteness of the KMTNet sample for planets in binary systems. Thus, planets in binary systems cannot be included in the current study of the KMTNet mass-ratio function, and a systematic search for planetary anomalies in KMTNet microlensing light curves of binary systems is needed., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, published in MNRAS

This work is devoted to the study of the broadband 0.8-79 keV spectral and timing properties of the poorly studied X-ray pulsar XTE J1859+083 during its 2015 outburst based on the data from the NuSTAR and Swift observatories. We show that the source pulse profile has complex shape that depends on the energy band. Pulse fraction of XTE J1859+083 has constant value around 35% in the broad energy band, this behaviour is atypical for X-ray pulsars. At the same time its energy spectrum is typical of this class of objects and has a power-law shape with an exponential cutoff at high energies. No cyclotron absorption line was discovered in the source spectrum. On the basis of indirect method and the absence of a cyclotron line, an estimation was made for the magnetic field strength as less than $5\times10^{11}$ G or belonging to the interval from $5\times10^{12}$ to $2.0^{+0.9}_{-1.2}\times10^{13}$ G. Data from the NOT and SALT telescopes as well as optical and IR sky surveys allowed us also to study the nature of its optical companion. We have proposed and studied new possible candidates for the optical companion of XTE J1859+083 and the most likely candidate was identified. The results of the optical and IR photometry and spectroscopy of these possible companions showed that the system is a Be X-ray binary, showing Br$\gamma$, He I and strong H$\alpha$ spectral lines., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 8 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables

The many unusual properties of the enigmatic AT2018cow suggested that at least some subset of the empirical class of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) represents a genuinely new astrophysical phenomenon. Unfortunately, the intrinsic rarity and fleeting nature of these events have made it difficult to identify additional examples early enough to acquire the observations necessary to constrain theoretical models. We present here the Zwicky Transient Facility discovery of AT2020xnd (ZTF20acigmel, the 'Camel') at z = 0.243, the first unambiguous AT2018cow analogue to be found and confirmed in real time. AT2018cow and AT2020xnd share all key observational properties: a fast optical rise, sustained high photospheric temperature, absence of a second peak attributable to ejection of a radioactively heated stellar envelope, extremely luminous radio, millimetre, and X-ray emission, and a dwarf-galaxy host. This supports the argument that AT2018cow-like events represent a distinct phenomenon from slower-evolving radio-quiet supernovae, likely requiring a different progenitor or a different central engine. The sample properties of the four known members of this class to date disfavour tidal disruption models but are consistent with the alternative model of an accretion powered jet following the direct collapse of a massive star to a black hole.
