The layered antiferromagnet FePS$_3$ has been shown to undergo a structural transition under pressure linked to an insulator-metal transition, with two incompatible models previously proposed for the highest-pressure structure. We present a study of the high-pressure crystal structures of FePS$_3$ using both single-crystal and powder x-ray diffraction. We show that the highest pressure transition involves a collapse of the inter-planar spacing of this material, along with an increase in symmetry from a monoclinic to a trigonal structure, to the exclusion of other models. The extent of this volume collapse is shown to be sensitive to the presence of a helium pressure medium in the sample environment, indicating that consideration of such experimental factors is important for understanding high-pressure behaviours in this material., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

This paper describes the design and implementation of an electric field sample cell, used to perform in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction under an applied electric field and suitable for single-crystal samples that are greater than 100 µm in size., With the recent increase in research into ferroelectric, anti-ferroelectric and piezoelectric materials, studying the solid-state properties in situ under applied electric fields is vital in understanding the underlying processes. Where this behaviour is the result of atomic displacements, crystallographic insight has an important role. This work presents a sample environment designed to apply an electric field to single-crystal samples in situ on the small-molecule single-crystal diffraction beamline I19, Diamond Light Source (UK). The configuration and operation of the cell is described as well as its application to studies of a proton-transfer colour-change material.

Guest-mediated pore-shape modification of the metal-organic framework, Sc2BDC3 (where BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate), upon adsorption of n-pentane and isopentane is examined by single crystal X-ray diffraction at moderate pressures (50 – 1200 bar) using a newly developed sapphire capillary cell, which allows detailed crystallographic data to be obtained using a variety of liquids on flexible systems. For Sc2BDC3, rotation of the BDC linker that is responsible for the change in pore shape occurs at much lower pressures than previously reported, with distinct adsorption behaviour found between the pentane isomers.

Post‐synthetic modification (PSM) of the interpenetrated diamondoid metal–organic framework (Me2NH2)[In(BDC‐NH2)2] (BDC‐NH2=aminobenzenedicarboxylate) SHF‐61 proceeds quantitatively in a single‐crystal‐to‐single‐crystal manner to yield the acetamide derivative (Me2NH2)[In(BDC‐NHC(O)Me)2] SHF‐62. Continuous breathing behaviour during activation/desolvation is retained upon PSM, but pore closing now leads to ring‐flipping to avert steric clash of amide methyl groups of the modified ligands. This triggers a reduction in the amplitude of the breathing deformation in the two dimensions associated with pore diameter, but a large increase in the third dimension associated with pore length. The MOF is thereby converted from predominantly 2D breathing (in SHF‐61) to a distinctly 3D breathing motion (in SHF‐62) indicating a decoupling of the pore‐width and pore‐length breathing motions. These breathing motions have been mapped by a series of single‐crystal diffraction studies., Post‐synthetic modification of diamondoid MOF SHF‐61 generates its methylamide analogue [(Me2NH2)[In(BDC‐NH(CO)Me)], SHF‐62, as single crystals. Resulting ligand steric demands and H‐bonding capability lead to a change in dimensionality of the MOF breathing behaviour from 2D breathing (pore width) to 3D breathing (pore width and length), which has been mapped by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction.

(S)-(−)-1-Phenylethanaminium 4-(2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl)benzoate (S-PEATPBB) undergoes a photochemical reaction in its crystalline form upon UV irradiation and forms three different products: the first product is the result of a Yang cyclization with the participation of the δ-H atom of o-isopropyl (product D) and the second and third products are obtained via a Norrish–Yang reaction with the involvement of the γ-H atom of 2-isopropyl (product P) and 6-isopropyl (product Z). These products are formed in different proportions (D > P >> Z). The path and kinetics of the reaction were monitored step-by-step using crystallographic methods, both under ambient and high-pressure conditions. The reactivity of S-PEATPBB depends strongly on the geometry of the reaction centre and the volume of the reaction cavity. Due to the geometrical preferences making the cyclization reaction easier to proceed, product D dominates over the other products, while the formation of product Z becomes difficult or almost impossible at high pressure. The reaction proceeds with an increase of the unit-cell volume, which, suppressed by high pressure, results in a significant decrease of the reaction rate. The crystal lattice of S-PEATPBB shows high elasticity. The quality of the partially reacted crystal remains the same after decompression from 0.75 GPa to 0.1 MPa.

Using solid-state molecular organometallic (SMOM) techniques, in particular solid/gas single-crystal to single-crystal reactivity, a series of σ-alkane complexes of the general formula [Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)(ηn:ηm-alkane)][BArF4] have been prepared (alkane = propane, 2-methylbutane, hexane, 3-methylpentane; ArF = 3,5-(CF3)2C6H3). These new complexes have been characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and DFT computational techniques and present a variety of Rh(I)···H–C binding motifs at the metal coordination site: 1,2-η2:η2 (2-methylbutane), 1,3-η2:η2 (propane), 2,4-η2:η2 (hexane), and 1,4-η1:η2 (3-methylpentane). For the linear alkanes propane and hexane, some additional Rh(I)···H–C interactions with the geminal C–H bonds are also evident. The stability of these complexes with respect to alkane loss in the solid state varies with the identity of the alkane: from propane that decomposes rapidly at 295 K to 2-methylbutane that is stable and instead undergoes an acceptorless dehydrogenation to form a bound alkene complex. In each case the alkane sits in a binding pocket defined by the {Rh(Cy2PCH2CH2PCy2)}+ fragment and the surrounding array of [BArF4]− anions. For the propane complex, a small alkane binding energy, driven in part by a lack of stabilizing short contacts with the surrounding anions, correlates with the fleeting stability of this species. 2-Methylbutane forms more short contacts within the binding pocket, and as a result the complex is considerably more stable. However, the complex of the larger 3-methylpentane ligand shows lower stability. Empirically, there therefore appears to be an optimal fit between the size and shape of the alkane and overall stability. Such observations are related to guest/host interactions in solution supramolecular chemistry and the holistic role of 1°, 2°, and 3° environments in metalloenzymes.

We report the structures of three new materials in the MDABCO-based perovskite family. Analysis of the Goldschmidt tolerance factor and octahedral factor enable us to propose compositional limits for pseudo-cubic perovskite phase formation and suggest directions for further materials discovery in this family of new ferroelectrics.

The reactivity of the Ir(I) PONOP pincer complex [Ir(

Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise as smart materials for specific applications such as gas separation. These materials undergo interesting structural changes in response to guest molecules, which is often associated with unique adsorption behavior not possible for rigid MOFs. Understanding the dynamic behavior of flexible MOFs is crucial yet challenging as it involves weak host-guest interactions and subtle structural transformation not only at the atomic/molecular level but also in a nonsteady state. We report here an in-depth study on the adsorbate- and temperature-dependent adsorption in a flexible MOF by crystallizing atomic gases into its pores. Mn(ina)2 shows an interesting temperature-dependent response toward noble gases. Its nonmonotonic, temperature-dependent adsorption profile results in an uptake maximum at a temperature threshold, a phenomenon that is unusual. Full characterization of Xe-loaded MOF structures is performed by in situ single-crystal and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. The X-ray diffraction analysis offers a detailed explanation into the dynamic structural transformation and provides a convincing rationalization of the unique adsorption behavior at the molecular scale. The guest and temperature dependence of the structural breathing gives rise to an intriguing reverse of Xe/Kr adsorption selectivity as a function of temperature. The presented work may provide further understanding of the adsorption behavior of noble gases in flexible MOF structures.

The use of narratives and storytelling has become an increasingly common strategy in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts to influence policy change. Drawing on qualitative interviews and observations, Jeffrey Moyer, Mark Warren, and Andrew King present a case study of the successful campaign by Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) to pass SB100, a progressive Illinois law aimed at ending the school-to-prison pipeline. The authors show that personal storytelling, when combined with other approaches, constitutes an effective strategy for youth organizing groups in low-income communities of color to achieve racial equity and educational justice policy goals. In this case, youth leaders involved in VOYCE told legislators their personal stories of the harm done to them and their friends by zero-tolerance school discipline and spoke to the racial inequities they faced. In doing so, they countered previously held narratives of youth of color as troublemakers and violence-prone and created a moral urgency for legislators to act. Youth leaders used storytelling and data to build a larger alliance of supporters, which contributed to the passage of a bill that limited harsh discipline, promoted restorative justice alternatives, and took steps to close racial gaps in suspensions and expulsions.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction has been used to study the CO2 absorption sites in a microporous Cu-MOF, [CuI2(py-pzpypz)2(μ-CN)2]n (1) (where py-pzpypz = 4-(4-pyridyl)-2,5-dipyrazyl-pyridine), which features zigzag-shaped channels, at a range of CO2 pressures (1, 5, and 10 bar) and at two temperatures (240 and 298 K). Unlike the acetonitrile molecules in the as-synthesized MOF, 1·MeCN, the CO2 molecules in 1·nCO2 (n = 0.8, 0.7, 0.45) are preferentially centered on the vertices of each zig and zag, which allows for weak (azine) C-H···OCO interactions with the H atoms on the electron-deficient pyrazine and pyridine rings of the MOF.

Chapter 2 offers a new model for understanding the dynamic relationship between local community organizing and national movement building. It highlights the critical contributions of local organizing to building the participation and leadership of those most impacted by injustice and to create organizational forms capable of sustaining campaigns to win policy changes. At the same time, it reveals the limitations of local organizing to dismantle a system of racial inequity deeply embedded in national structures, policies, and consciousness. It considers the contributions of national movements like influencing federal policy and challenging racist stereotypes and narratives. However, they are typically too narrowly focused on federal policy and dominated by Washington-based professional advocacy groups. Instead, movements can be stronger when they seek to strengthen and spread local organizing, “nationalizing local struggles,” and when groups grounded in communities most impacted by injustice share power with professional advocates.

Chapter 6 examines the campaign by Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) to pass SB100, the strongest state law at the time designed to combat the school-to-prison pipeline. It highlights the role of high school students in leading a struggle for their own liberation. It identifies key elements of VOYCE’s organizing strategy—elements that groups used across the country: personal storytelling to bring a human face and moral force to policy campaigns; participatory action research to demonstrate the systemic nature of racial inequities; and alliance building to provide greater resources to organizing efforts led by those most impacted. It also shows how the SB100 campaign emerged through an interaction between authentic, bottom-up concerns of VOYCE youth of color and national-level learning from the experiences of organizing groups across the country.

Chapter 7 discusses the spread of the movement across the country. It shows how small, under-resourced groups like Racial Justice NOW! in Dayton, Ohio, won significant victories by combining strong parent organizing with critical support from the national Dignity in Schools Campaign. It charts the efforts of Families and Friends of Louisiana’s Incarcerated Children to combat the school-to-prison pipeline in a privatized district dominated by charter schools. It examines the work of the Gwinnett Parent Coalition to Dismantle the School-to-Prison Pipeline outside of Atlanta. It shows how students of color face sharply inequitable discipline despite attending higher performing schools and the challenges of confronting the school-to-prison pipeline in white-dominated districts used to serving majority white populations. The chapter ends in the suburbs surrounding Richmond, Virginia, where local organizers confront a system that has systematically denied educational opportunities to students of color with special needs.

Willful Defiance documents how Black and Brown parents, students and members of low-income communities of color organized to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline in their local schools and built a movement that spread across the country. The book begins in the Mississippi Delta where African American families were some of the first to name and speak out against the school-to-prison pipeline and challenge anti-Black racism, exclusionary discipline policies that suspend and expel students of color at disproportionate rates and policing practices that lead students into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. The book examines organizing processes in Mississippi, Los Angeles, Chicago, and other localities, showing how groups led by parents and students of color built the power to win policy changes to reduce suspensions and expulsions by centering the participation of people most impacted by injustice and combining deep local organizing with resources from the national movement. It shows how an intersectional movement emerged as girls of color and gender nonconforming students asserted their voice, the movement won victories to remove or defund school police and sought to establish restorative justice alternatives to transform deep-seated racism in public schools. The book documents the struggle organizers waged to build a movement led by community groups accountable to people most impacted by injustice rather than Washington-based professional advocates. It offers a new model for federated movements that operate simultaneously at local, state, and national levels, while primarily oriented to support local organizing and reconceptualizes national movements as interconnected local struggles whose victories are lifted up and “nationalized” to transform racially inequitable policies at multiple levels.

Chapter 1 offers an analysis of the school-to-prison pipeline as the modern incarnation of a system of white supremacy based upon the mass criminalization of Black and Brown communities. It documents the rise of the school-to-prison pipeline in zero-tolerance school discipline policies and the increasing presence of police and security measures in schools. The school-to-prison pipeline is more than a set of well-intentioned but misguided school discipline policies that require reform. Rather, it represents an interlocking system of racial domination and control that keeps communities of color poor and lacking in power. It signifies the current version of the historic effort to maintain white supremacy by denying education to African Americans and criminalizing generations of young people of color and their families. This larger analytical framework of systemic racism is important because it establishes the need for a racial and educational justice movement to dismantle it.

The Introduction opens with the stories of a Black parent and a Black student who were victims of the school-to-prison pipeline and their journeys to racial justice organizing. These experiences and these stories ground the emergence of the movement to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline. The Introduction then recounts the author’s own journey to awareness of the school-to-prison pipeline and describes the development of the community engaged research project upon which the book is based. It recounts the author’s traumatic experiences in the field witnessing the abusive treatment of students and parents of color, and it discusses the challenges faced addressing the author’s privileges and positionality as a white, male professor partnering with and studying organizers and leaders of color based in low-income communities. It ends with an overview of the book and its chapters.

Chapter 8 examines the expansion of the movement to new issues and newly forceful constituents. It charts the rise of the police-free schools movement and discusses the influence of the Movement for Black Lives. It documents the assertion of voice and leadership by Black girls; girls of color; and gender nonconforming students in the movement, highlighting the intersectional ways that they experience the school-to-prison pipeline. Finally, it examines the role of teachers as allies to the movement and highlights efforts to implement restorative justice as an alternative to zero tolerance. It emphasizes the need to connect restorative justice to school-site organizing that connects teachers with students and parents in ways that transform relationships and create liberatory education.

Chapter 5 documents the ways organizing groups have confronted a vast school district and militarized system of police control in Los Angeles. It features the role of Black and Brown parents in CADRE as key leaders. These parents won the first district-wide breakthrough against zero tolerance discipline approaches in the country when they got the LA Unified School District to adopt schoolwide positive behavioral supports in 2006. The movement “nationalized” this local victory, inspiring groups across the country to launch campaigns against zero tolerance. The chapter also highlights the youth-organizing work of the Labor Community Strategy Center to end police ticketing of students, one of the pioneering efforts to address policing in the school-to-prison pipeline movement. It examines the Youth Justice Coalition and its Free LA High School that supports young people returning from the juvenile justice system and attempts to create a model for police-free schools based upon transformative justice.

The concluding chapter documents the impact of the school-to-prison pipeline movement on reducing suspensions and challenging policing practices in schools. It then highlights the features that help explain the growth and success of the movement and its emerging intersectional nature—like centering the participation of people most impacted by injustice. It draws lessons from this study for reconceptualizing social justice movements as ones that “nationalize local struggles.” It considers the enduring challenges facing the movement to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline, including the persistence of racial disparities in exclusionary discipline, tensions between local and national organizing, and the difficulties of implementing restorative alternatives that serve to transform deep-seated racialized processes. It ends with a discussion of the challenges and opportunities to building racial and educational justice movements powerful enough to fully transform entrenched systems of racial inequity and educational injustice, particularly in an era that has witnessed the rise of white nationalism.

Chapter 4 documents the development of the Mississippi Delta Catalyst Roundtable to reform a deeply racist and abusive juvenile justice system and to build power in Black communities. It stresses the importance of grounding the national movement in African American communities in the South. It shows how these groups created models to combine community organizing with legal strategies and advocacy work in ways that centered the leadership of groups rooted in communities of those most impacted. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the critical importance of statewide and national networks to support local organizing carried out by small groups facing entrenched systems of oppression. It shows how people most impacted by injustice facing powerful white resistance spoke out and used intergenerational community organizing to confront systemic racism. Combining deep local organizing and national support, they made important breakthroughs and helped inspire a new racial justice movement.

Chapter 3 charts the development of the movement to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline as a national movement with deep local roots. It documents the beginnings of the movement in places like Holmes County, Mississippi, where African American parents first raised the alarm. It shows how national actors played important roles in spreading local victories, while both strengthening local organizing and working to influence federal policy. It discusses the struggle in the Dignity in Schools Campaign to create a coalition in which community groups would have a majority say and keep the coalition focused on supporting local organizing rather than Washington politics. It charts the movement’s victories, shifting discourse away from zero tolerance and getting the federal government to issue guidelines warning against zero-tolerance discipline. These victories became resources to groups in local- and state-level campaigns, creating a rolling series of policy wins across the country.
