1. Modelling 60 years of glacier mass balance and runoff for Chhota Shigri Glacier, Western Himalaya, Northern India

Abstract

Glacier mass balance and runoff are simulated from 1955 to 2014 for the catchment (46% glacier cover) containing Chhota Shigri Glacier (Western Himalaya) using gridded data from three regional climate models: (1) the Rossby Centre regional atmospheric climate model v.4 (RCA4); (2) the REgional atmosphere MOdel (REMO); and (3) the Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF). The input data are downscaled to the simulation grid (300 m) and calibrated with point measurements of temperature and precipitation. Additional input is daily potential global radiation calculated using a DEM at a resolution of 30 m. The mass-balance model calculates daily snow accumulation, melt and runoff. The model parameters are calibrated with available mass-balance measurements and results are validated with geodetic measurements, other mass-balance model results and run-off measurements. Simulated annual mass balances slightly decreased from −0.3 m w.e. a−1 (1955–99) to −0.6 m w.e. a−1 for 2000–14. For the same periods, mean runoff increased from 2.0 m3 s−1 (1955–99) to 2.4 m3 s−1 (2000–14) with glacier melt contributing about one-third to the runoff. Monthly runoff increases are greatest in July, due to both increased snow and glacier melt, whereas slightly decreased snowmelt in August and September was more than compensated by increased glacier melt.

Abstract

Meltwater runoff in the catchment area containing Chhota Shigri glacier (Western Himalaya) is simulated for the period 1951–2099. The applied mass-balance model is forced by downscaled products from four regional climate models with different horizontal resolution. For the future climate scenarios we use high resolution time series of 5 km grid spacing, generated using the newly developed Intermediate Complexity Atmospheric Research Model. The meteorological input is downscaled to 300 m horizontal resolution. The use of an ice flow model provides annually updated glacier area for the mass-balance calculations. The mass-balance model calculates daily snow accumulation, melt, runoff, as well as the individual runoff components (glacial melt, snowmelt and rain). The resulting glacier area decreases by 35% (representative concentration pathway (RCP) 4.5 scenario) to 70% (RCP 8.5 scenario) by 2099 relative to 2000. The average annual mass balance over the whole model period (1951–2099) was –0.4 (±0.3) m w.e. a–1. Average annual runoff does not differ substantially between the two climate scenarios. However, for the years after 2040 our results show a shift towards earlier snowmelt onset that increases runoff in May and June, and reduced glacier melt that decreases runoff in August and September. This shift is much stronger pronounced in the RCP 8.5 scenario.

Abstract

To evaluate the sensitivity of mountain permafrost to atmospheric forcing, the dominant meteorological variables such as temperature, precipitation and timing and duration of snow cover have to be considered. Simulations with a one-dimensional coupled heat and mass transfer model (CoupModel) are used to investigate the interactions between the atmosphere and the ground focusing on ground temperature evolution and the temporal variability of the depth of the unfrozen top layer in summer (active layer depth). Idealised and observed atmospheric forcing data sets are used to determine the meteorological conditions, which show the largest impact on the permafrost regime. Borehole temperature and energy balance data from the permafrost station Schilthorn (2900 m asl, Berner Oberland) are used for verification. The results for the Schilthorn site show the largest impact due to summer temperatures changes during the snow free period and to a lesser extent winter precipitation which influence the duration of the snow cover. Similarly important is the timing of the first snow event in autumn which leads to a sufficiently large snow cover to isolate the ground from atmospheric forcing. Simulations with different data sets from Regional Climate Model (RCM) simulations derived from an ensemble of models and scenarios show that the differences in changes of active layer depth between different RCMs are on the same order than between different scenarios.

Abstract

Background Rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the most common injuries of the knee. Common techniques for ACL reconstruction require a graft fixation using interference screws. Nowadays, these interference screws are normally made of titanium or polymer/ceramic composites. The main challenge of application of a fixation device made entirely of bioactive ceramic is in relation to the low strength of such materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a novel geometry for a fixation device made of pure hydroxyapatite for ACL reconstructions that can overcome some problems of the titanium and the polymer/ceramic screws. Methods Finite Element Analysis was used for optimization of the stress distribution in conventional interference screw geometry. For experimental evaluation of the new fixation device, ex vivo tests were performed. Results The innovative screw-like fixation device is characterized by multiple threads with a large thread pitch. The novel design enabled the insertion of the screw into the bone without the application of an external torque or a screwdriver. In turn, it also allowed for the use of low-strength and high-bioactivity materials, like hydroxyapatite. Ex vivo tests showed that the novel screw can sustain pull-out forces up to 476 N, which is comparable to that of the commercially available BioComposite™ interference screws (Arthrex Inc., Germany), as a reference. Conclusions In summary, the novel screw design is a promising strategy to develop all-ceramic fixation devices for ACL reconstructions, which may eliminate some drawbacks of the current interference screws.

Abstract

Glacierised catchments show a discharge regime that is strongly influenced by snow and glacier meltwaters. In this study, we modelled the mass balance and discharge rates for three highly glacierised catchments (>50% glacier cover) in western Norway over the period 1961–2012. The spatial pattern of the catchments follows a gradient in climate continentality from west to east. The model input were gridded temperature and precipitation values from seNorge (http://senorge.no) which are available at daily resolution. The model accounted for accumulation of snow, transformation of snow to firn and ice, evaporation and melt. Calibration and validation were performed for each catchment based on measurements of seasonal glacier mass balances and daily discharge rates, as additional validation data served daily melt rates from sonic rangers located in the ablation zones of two of the glaciers. The discharge sources snowmelt, glacier melt and rain were analysed with respect to spatial variations and temporal evolution. Model simulations reveal an increase in the relative contribution from glacier melt to total discharge for the three catchments from less than 10% in the early 1990s to 15–30% in the late 2000s. The decline in precipitation by 10–20% in the same period was therefore overcompensated, resulting in an increase in annual discharge by 5–20%. Annual discharge sums and annual glacier melt are most strongly correlated with annual and winter precipitation at the most maritime glacier and, with increased climate continentality, variations in both glacier melt contribution and annual discharge are becoming more strongly correlated with variations in summer temperatures. Therefore, glaciers in more continental climates are especially vulnerable to decrease in both annual and summer discharge with continued rise in summer temperatures and subsequent decrease in glacier extent. This may lead to significant changes to the discharge regime, with increase during spring but decline later in the year, especially for catchments in less maritime climate conditions.

Abstract

This study evaluates sensitivities of glacier mass balance and runoff to both annual and monthly perturbations in air temperature and precipitation at four highly glacierized catchments: Engabreen in northern Norway and Ålfotbreen, Nigardsbreen and Storbreen, which are aligned along a west–east profile in southern Norway. The glacier mass-balance sensitivities to changes in annual air temperature range from 1.74 m w.e. K−1 for Ålfotbreen to 0.55 m w.e. K−1 for Storbreen, the most maritime and the most continental glaciers in this study, respectively. The runoff sensitivities of all catchments are 20–25% per degree temperature change and 6–18% for a 30% precipitation change. A seasonality of the sensitivities becomes apparent. With increasing continentality, the sensitivity of mass balance and runoff to temperature perturbations during summer increases, and the sensitivity of annual runoff to both temperature and precipitation perturbations is constricted towards changes during the ablation period. Comparing sensitivities in northern and southern Norway, as well as the variability across southern Norway, reveals that continentality influences sensitivities more than latitude does.

Abstract

Background. The study aim is to avoid tooth extraction by nonsurgical treatment of periapical lesion. It assesses healing progress in response to calcium hydroxide-iodoform-silicon oil paste (CHISP). Numeric Pain Rating Scale was used to validate the approach. Furthermore, CHISP was used to treat cystic lesions secondary to posttraumatic avulsion of permanent teeth. Materials and Methods. Over 200 patients with radicular cysts were treated with CHISP through the root canal. Radiographs were used to verify lesion size and position, ensure correct delivery to the site, and monitor the progress of bone healing in the lesion area. Ten males and 10 females were randomly selected for statistical assessment. Results. No severe pain, complications, or failure in cyst healing was reported. Complete healing was achieved in an average of 75 days. Furthermore, healing of radicular cyst secondary to posttraumatic tooth avulsion was successful. Conclusion. CHISP indicated an antiseptic effect, which enhanced and shortened healing time of periapical lesions. The less invasive procedure avoids tooth extraction and reduces bone resorption. Cyst management with CHISP can remedy failed root canal treatments. The results show a bone regenerative capacity of CHISP suggested in first rapid phase and a second slow phase.

Abstract

The service seNorge (http://senorge.no) provides gridded temperature and precipitation for mainland Norway. The products are provided as interpolated station measurements on a 1×1 km grid. Precipitation gauges are predominantly located at lower elevations such as coastal areas and valleys. Therefore, there are large uncertainties in extrapolating precipitation data to higher altitudes, both due to sparsity of observations as well as the large spatial variability of precipitation in mountainous regions. Using gridded temperature and precipitation data from seNorge, surface mass balance was modeled for five Norwegian glaciers of different size and climate conditions. The model accounts for melting of snow and ice by applying a degree-day approach and considers refreezing assuming a snow depth depended storage. Calculated values are compared to point measurements of glacier winter mass balance. On average for each glacier, modeled and measured surface mass-balance evolutions agree well, but results at individual stake locations show large variability. Two types of problems were identified: first, grid data were not able to capture spatial mass balance variability at smaller glaciers. Second, a significant increase in the bias between model and observations with altitude for one glacier suggested that orographic enhancement of precipitation was not appropriately captured by the gridded interpolation. © 2012 Taylor & Francis

Abstract

Here we present results of a workshop designed to bring together stakeholders from different states of the Indian side of the Himalayan arc and an international group of climate scientists in order to discuss how climate change research for this region can be tailored toward the needs of local communities. The stakeholder workshop was jointly organized by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, India, and the Climate Service Center 2.0, Hamburg, Germany, within the framework of the multidisciplinary international research project GLACINDIA. The project focuses on the water-related effects of changes in glacier mass balance and river runoff in western Himalayas. Given the research focus of the GLACINDIA project, the initial focus of the workshop was on glacier-related hydrological information. During stakeholder interactions the resulting discussion covered a much broader range of urgent climate change information needs for the Himalayan region. Abstract

The paper describes a generalisation of the programming method described by Ponter and Carter (1997) for the evaluation of optimal upper bounds on the limit load of a body composed of a rigid/perfectly plastic material. The method is based upon similar principles to the `Elastic Compensation' method which has been used for design calculations for some years but re-interpreted as a non-linear programming method. A sufficient condition for convergence is derived which relates properties of the yield surface to those of the linear solutions solved at each iteration. The method is demonstrated through an application to a Drucker–Prager yield condition in terms of the Von Mises effective stress and the hydrostatic pressure. Implementation is shown to be possible using the user routines in a commercial finite element code, ABAQUS. The examples chosen indicate that stable convergent solutions may be obtained. There are, however, limits to the application of the method if isotropic linear solutions are used for an isotropic yield surface. In an accompanying paper (Ponter and Engelhardt, 2000) the method is extended to shakedown and related problems.

Abstract

In previous papers [1,2], a procedure was described for the evaluation of limit loads and shakedown limits for a body subjected to cyclic loading. The procedure was based upon the “Elastic Compensation” method [9,10] where a sequence of linear problems are solved with spatially varying linear moduli. In [1] it was demonstrated that the method may be interpreted as a nonlinear programming method where the local gradient of the upper bound functional and the potential energy of the linear problem are matched at a current strain rate or during a strain rate history. This interpretation may be used to formulate a very general method for evaluating minimum upper bound solutions. Provided certain convexity conditions are satisfied, it is possible to define a sequence of linear problems where the functional monotonically reduces. The sequence then converges to the solution which corresponds to the absolute minimum of the functional, subject to constraints imposed by the class of strain rate histories under consideration. The theoretical basis for the method and convergence proofs are discussed in ref. [3,4].

Abstract

BACKGROUND Osteoporosis is diagnosed by bone loss using a radiological parameter called T-score. Preclinical studies use DXA to evaluate bone status were the T-score is referenced on bone mineral density (BMD) values of the same animals before treatment. Clinically, the reference BMD represents values of an independent group of healthy patients around 30 years old. The present study established a clinically similar T-score standard to diagnose osteoporosis in a sheep model. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used 31 female merino land sheep (average 5.5 years old) to study osteoporosis. The following groups were compared using DXA measurement: 1) control; 2) ovariectomized (OVX); 3) OVX combined with a deficient diet (OVXD); and 4) OVXD combined with methylprednisolone administration (OVXDS). Further, an independent group of 32 healthy sheep (4-6 years old) were measured as an independent baseline. BMD was measured at 0 months, 3 months, and 8 months after treatment. RESULTS The same significance pattern between the treated groups and either baseline groups was seen.
