The large hadron collider (LHC) at CERN has been operating and generating physics experimental data since September 2008, and following its first long shut down, it has entered a second, 4-year-long physics run. It is to date the largest superconducting installation ever built, counting over 9000 magnets along its 27-km long circumference. A significant operational experience has been accumulated, including the occurrence and consequences of electrical faults at the level of the superconducting magnets, as well as their protection and instrumentation circuits. The purpose of this paper is to provide a first overview of the most common electrical faults and their frequency of occurrence in the first years of operation, and to perform a statistical analysis that can provide reference values for future productions of similar dimensions and nature.

The electrical interconnections between the LHC main magnets are made of soldered joints (splices) of two superconducting Rutherford cables, stabilized by a copper busbar. In 2009, a number of splices was found not properly stabilized and could have suffered a thermal runaway in case of quench at high current. The LHC was, therefore, operated at reduced energy and all joints were continuously monitored by a newly installed layer of the quench protection system. During the first long shutdown (LS1) in 2013/14, the high-current busbar joints were consolidated to allow us a safe operation of the LHC at its design energy, i.e., 14-TeV center-of-mass. The superconducting magnets and circuits consolidation project has coordinated the consolidation of the 10306 13-kA busbar splices. Since 2015, the LHC is successfully operated at an energy of 13-TeV center-of-mass. This paper will briefly describe the applied analysis method and will present the results and comparisons of the Rutherford-cable splice resistance measurements at 1.9 K before and after LS1, based on an unprecedented amount of information gathered during long-term operation of superconducting high-current joints. A few outliers that are still present after the splice consolidation will also be shortly discussed.

Zuritathe FCC Collaboration, In response to the 2013 Update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (EPPSU), the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study was launched as a world-wide international collaboration hosted by CERN. The FCC study covered an energy-frontier hadron collider (FCC-hh), a highest-luminosity high-energy lepton collider (FCC-ee), the corresponding 100km tunnel infrastructure, as well as the physics opportunities of these two colliders, and a high-energy LHC, based on FCC-hh technology. This document constitutes the fourth volume of the FCC Conceptual Design Report, devoted to the High-Energy Large Hadron Collider HE-LHC. It summarizes the HE-LHC physics discovery opportunities, presents the HE-LHC accelerator design, performance reach, and operation plan, discusses the underlying technologies, the civil engineering and technical infrastructure, and also sketches a possible implementation. Combining ingredients from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the high-luminosity LHC upgrade and adding novel technologies and approaches, the HE-LHC design aims at a hadron collider with about twice the centre-of-mass collision energy that the LHC can reach. Its performance aims at exploring physics beyond the Standard Model, signi cantly extending the LHC's direct and indirect sensitivity to new physics and discoveries.

An energy of $362\:\text{MJ}$ is stored in each of the two LHC proton beams for nominal beam parameters. This will be further increased to about $700\:\text{MJ}$ in the future High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and uncontrolled beam losses represent a significant hazard for the integrity and safe operation of the machine. In this paper, a number of failure mechanisms that can lead to a fast increase of beam losses are analyzed. Most critical are failures in the magnet protection system, namely the quench heaters and a novel protection system called Coupling-Loss Induced Quench (CLIQ). An important outcome is that magnet protection has to be evaluated for its impact on the beam and designed accordingly. In particular, CLIQ, which is to protect the new HL-LHC triplet magnets, constitutes the fastest known failure in the LHC if triggered spuriously. A schematic change of CLIQ to mitigate the hazard is presented. A loss of the Beam-Beam Kick due to the extraction of one beam is another source of beam losses with a fast onset. A significantly stronger impact is expected in the upcoming LHC Run III and HL-LHC as compared to the current LHC, mainly due to the increased bunch intensity. Its criticality and mitigation methods are discussed. It is shown that symmetric quenches in the superconducting magnets for the final focusing triplet can have a significant impact on the beam on short timescales. The impact on the beam due to failures of the Beam-Beam Compensating Wires as well as coherent excitations by the transverse beam damper are also discussed., Comment: 28 pages, 23 figures. Crab cavities (CCs) constitute a key component of the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) project. In case of a failure, they can induce significant transverse beam offsets within tens of microseconds, necessitating a fast removal of the circulating beam to avoid damage to accelerator components due to losses from the displaced beam halo. In preparation for the final design to be employed in the LHC, a series of tests were conducted on prototype crab cavities installed in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. This paper summarizes the machine protection requirements and observations during the first tests of crab cavities with proton beams in the SPS. Throughout the last decades, distributed file systems and processing engines have been the primary choice for applications requiring access to large amounts of data. Since the introduction of the MapReduce paradigm, relational databases are being increasingly replaced by more efficient and scalable architectures, in particular in environments where a query is expected to process TBytes or even PBytes of data in a single execution. That is the situation at CERN, where data storage systems that are critical for the safe operation, exploitation and optimization of the particle accelerator complex, are based on traditional databases or file system solutions, which are already working well beyond their initially provisioned capacity. Despite the efficiency of modern distributed data storage and processing engines in handling large amounts of data, they are not optimized for heterogeneous workloads such as they arise in the dynamic environment of one of the world's largest scientific facilities.This contribution presents a Mixed Partitioning Scheme Replication (MPSR) solution that outperforms the conventional distributed processing environment configurations at CERN for virtually the entire parameter space of the accelerator monitoring systems' workload variations. Our main strategy was to replicate the data using different partitioning schemes for each replica, whereas the individual partitioning criteria is dynamically derived from the observed workload. To assess the efficiency of this approach in a wide range of scenarios, a behavioral simulator has been developed to compare and analyze the performance of the MPSR with the current solution. Furthermore we present the first actual results of the Hadoop-based prototype running on a relatively small cluster that not only validates the simulation predictions but also confirms the higher efficiency of the proposed technique.

In the extremely unlikely event of a non-working beam dumping system in the LHC, the 360 MJ of stored beam energy can be dissipated in the collimation system as a last mitigation measure. In such a situation, it is important to reduce the stored beam energy both quickly and at the same time as smoothly as possible in order to limit the risk of trips of critical systems, to avoid quenches of superconducting magnets (which would lead to changes of the beam trajectory and damage to the accelerator) and ultimately damage to the collimators themselves. Detailed steps and parameters have been developed and validated during two dedicated experiments with beam in the LHC. In the years 2009-2013 the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has been operated with the top beam energies of 3.5 TeV and 4 TeV per proton (from 2012) instead of the nominal 7 TeV. The currents in the superconducting magnets were reduced accordingly. To date only seventeen beam-induced quenches have occurred; eight of them during specially designed quench tests, the others during injection. There has not been a single beam- induced quench during normal collider operation with stored beam. The conditions, however, are expected to become much more challenging after the long LHC shutdown. The magnets will be operating at near nominal currents, and in the presence of high energy and high intensity beams with a stored energy of up to 362 MJ per beam. In this paper we summarize our efforts to understand the quench levels of LHC superconducting magnets. We describe beam-loss events and dedicated experiments with beam, as well as the simulation methods used to reproduce the observable signals. The simulated energy deposition in the coils is compared to the quench levels predicted by electro-thermal models, thus allowing to validate and improve the models which are used to set beam-dump thresholds on beam-loss monitors for Run 2., Comment: 19 pages

The LHC is an accelerator with unprecedented complexity where the energy stored in magnets and the beams exceeds other accelerators by one-to-two orders of magnitude. To ensure a safe and efficient machine start-up without being plagued by technical problems, a phase of "hardware commissioning" was introduced: a thorough commissioning of technical systems without beam. This activity started in June 2005 with the commissioning of individual systems, followed by operating a full sector, one eighth of the machine; the commissioning is expected to last until spring 2008 when commissioning with beam will start. The LHC architecture allows the commissioning of each of the eight sectors independently from the others, before the installation of other sectors is complete. An important effort went into the definition of the programme and the organization of the coordination in the field, as well as in the preparation of the tools to record and analyze test results. This paper discusses the experience with this approach, presents results from the commissioning of the first LHC sector and gives an outlook for future activities.

For nominal beam parameters at 7 TeV/c each of the two LHC proton beams has a stored energy of 362 MJ threatening to damage accelerator equipment in case of uncontrolled beam loss. The energy stored in the magnet system at 7 TeV/c will exceed 10 GJ. In order to avoid damage of accelerator equipment, complex machine protection systems are required. Magnet protection and powering interlock systems must be operational already before commissioning the magnet powering system. Beam operation, throughout the operational cycle from injection to colliding beams, requires fully operational protection systems, including beam interlock systems, beam dumping system, beam instrumentation (mainly beam loss monitors) as well as collimators and beam absorbers. Details of LHC machine protection have been presented on several occasions and the systems involved in protection are well documented [1]. This paper gives an overview of LHC machine protection, discusses the progress with the implementation and presents first results from the commissioning of some systems.
