Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Recent studies have shown that the stable boundary layer (SBL) presents two distinct regimes. In the weakly stable regime, turbulence is continous and similarity relationships are valid, while in the very stable regime turbulence is intermittent or absent and similarity relationships do not work properly. In the present thesis, the difficulties associated with the numerical simulation of both regimes and transition between them are addressed. This study has been divided into 4 articles. In the first article different numerical models, are compared for their ability to reproduce the two SBL regimes. This paper indicates that the inclusion of more prognostic equations in the models cause the SBL regimes to be reproduced more similarly to what is observed in nature. In the second article, the transition from the weakly stable to the very stable regime is analyzed through data from a 140-meter tower located in Linhares, Espirito Santos state. It was observed that the transition between the regimes was preceded by an abrupt cooling of the layer, accompanied by a reduction in turbulent kinetic energy, and wind speed intensity. Also, it has been observed that the maximum absolute heat flux occurs in the weakly stable regime. In the third article, similar transitions to those presented in the second article were investigated with a second-order numerical model, where the transition is driven by decreasing wind intensity at the top of the domain. In this paper, it is shown that the radiative processes and thermal properties of the soil are determinant for the transition between SBL regimes. In the fourth article, different planetary boundary layer parameterizations in the Weather Research and Forecasting - Single Column Model have been compared and evaluated for their ability to simulate SBL regimes. In this article, it has been shown that both 2.5-level Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi- Niino have the best performance both in the weakly and the very stable regime. However, the transition between these regimes occurs under lower geostrophic wind than observed in nature. The results indicate that the heat flux exerts large control in the stable boundary layer regimes. Therefore, the inclusion of a prognostic equation for heat flux in the WRF turbulence schemes would be an important advance in the future developments. Estudos recentes mostraram que a camada limite estável (CLE) apresenta dois regimes distintos. No regime pouco estável a turbulência é contínua e relações de similaridade são válidas e no muito estável a turbulência é intermitente ou ausente e relações de similaridade não funcionam. Na presente tese, são abordadas as dificuldades de simular numericamente os dois regimes e a transição entre eles. O estudo é dividido em 4 artigos. No primeiro deles,] diferentes modelos numéricos, são comparados quanto à sua capacidade de reproduzir dois regimes da CLE. Esse artigo indica que a inclusão de equações mais prognósticas aos modelos fazem com os regimes da CLE sejam reproduzidos de uma maneira mais semelhantes às observadas na natureza. No segundo artigo, a transição do regime pouco estável para muito estável, é analisada através dos dados provenientes de uma torre de 140 metros situada em Linhares, no estado de Espírito Santos. Foi observado que a transição entre os regimes era precedida por um resfriamento abrupto da camada, acompanhado de uma redução na energia cinética turbulenta, e da intensidade da velocidade do vento. Além disso, foi observado que o máximo do fluxo de calor, em módulo, ocorre no regime pouco estável. No terceiro artigo, transições semelhantes, às apresentadas no segundo artigo, foram investigadas com auxilio de um modelo numérico de segunda ordem, em que a transição é impulsionada pelo decréscimo da intensidade do vento no topo do domínio. Nesse artigo é mostrado que os processos radiativos e propriedades térmicas da superfície do solo são determinantes para transição entre os regimes da CLE. No quarto artigo, diferentes parametrizações de camada limite planetária presentes no "Weather Research and Forecasting - Single Column Model" foram comparados e avaliados quanto a sua capacidade de simular os regimes da CLE. Nesse artigo foi mostrado que ambos os esquemas Mellor-Yamada-Nakanishi-Niino de nível 2.5 apresentam o melhor desempenho, conseguindo resolver tanto o regime pouco estável quanto o regime muito estável. Porém, a transição entre esses regimes ocorre sob condições de vento geostrófico de menor intensidade que observado. Os resultados apresentados no presente trabalho indicam que o fluxo de calor exerce um grande controle nos regimes da camada limite estável. Logo, a inclusão de uma equação prognóstica para o fluxo de calor nos esquemas de turbulência, presentes no WRF, significaria um importante avanço.

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico The appropriate estimation of turbulent fluxes in very stable conditions is a great challenge for numerical models that simulate the average behavior of the stable boundary layer. Although many features of the flow are usually reproduced, the intermittent variation turbulence is not simulated by most atmospheric models that use K theory for the determination of turbulent fluxes in the stable boundary layer. Moreover, the transition between the very stable and weakly stable regimes of the stable boundary layer is not well understood and described by numerical models. Therefore, in this work a one-and-a-half order numerical model is proposed to represent the average behavior of the nocturnal boundary layer. The model is based in the one proposed by Costa et al. (2011). In the presently proposed scheme, both the sensible heat flux and temperature variance are solved by prognostic equations in order to add degrees of freedom and physical detail to the model. Throughout the work, comparisons are made among the solutions varying different parameters. Results are also compared to the solutions obtained using the model proposed by Costa et al. (2011). The results show that the present model is able to reproduce the transition between the coupled and decoupled stable boundary layer regimes, in a manner similar to what is observed in nature. It also reproduces the occurrence of intermittent non periodical events and the formation of shallow mixing in weak wind conditions. The inclusion of prognostic equations for the sensible heat flux and for the temperature variance provides transitions between regimes at larger winds than those obtained when these quantities are parameterized, and closer to the observed values. The model provides a dependence of the potential temperature scale, θ∗ and of the sensible heat flux on the wind speed that is similar to observations. It also reproduces abrupt transitions between the stable boundary layer regimes, something not observed in the model proposed by Costa et al. (2011). The turbulent kinetic energy balance obtained by the model is closer to the observed by Acevedo et al. (2016) than was obtained by Costa et al. (2011). Dissipation is the dominat mechanism of turbulence destruction in very stable conditions, a role played by buoyant destruction in the model by Costa et al. (2011). The results sustain the hypothesis proposed by Van Weil et al. (2012), that the very stable regime happens when turbulence is not capable of sustaining turbulent heat fluxes large enough to accompany the long wave radiative loss. A estimativa adequada dos fluxos turbulentos em condições muito estáveis ainda é um grande desafio para os modelos numéricos que descrevem o comportamento médio da CLE. Embora, muitas características do escoamento sejam simuladas, a variação intermitente da turbulência não é reproduzida por grande parte dos modelos atmosféricos que utilizam teoria K na estimativa dos fluxos turbulentos na CLE. Além disso, a transição entre os regimes muito estável e fracamente estável da CLE, ainda, não é bem compreendida e descrita pelos modelos numéricos. No presente trabalho é proposto um modelo numérico, de uma ordem e meia, para descrever o comportamento médio de uma camada limite noturna. O modelo é baseado no que foi proposto por COSTA et al. (2011). O modelo aqui proposto tanto o fluxo de energia na forma de calor sensível como a variância de temperatura são estimados através de equações prognósticas, afim de acrescentar graus de liberdade ao sistema e de modo a acrescentar detalhamento físico à solução. Ao longo do trabalho, foram realizadas comparações entre as soluções obtidas no modelo variando diferentes parâmetros. As soluções também são comparadas com as obtidas utilizando o modelo proposto por Costa et al. (2011). Os resultados mostram que o presente modelo é capaz de reproduzir as transições entre os estados acoplado e desacoplado da camada limite estável, de forma semlhante à observada na natureza. São simulados eventos intermitentes não periódicos que se assemelham aos observados na camada limite. O modelo também reproduz a ocorrência de mistura rasa em condições de vento fraco. A inclusão de equações prognósticas para o fluxo de energia na forma de calor sensível e para a variância de temperatura proporciona transições entre os estados e em condições de vento mais intensas que as obtidas quando essas quantidades são parametrizadas, e mais próximo dos valores observados. Ao observar a dependêndia das quantidades turbulentas, tais como a escala de temperatura potencial, θ∗, e o fluxo de energia na forma de calor sensível em função da velocidade do vento, o presente modelo modelo apresentou os resultados mais semelhante aos observados, se mostrando capaz de reproduzir as transições entre os estados de forma abrupta, diferente do que ocorre no modelo proposto por Costa et al. (2011). O balanço de ECT obtido pelo presente modelo, se aproxima mais do observado por Acevedo et al. (2016) que o obtido por Costa et al. (2011). A dissipação é o mecanismo dominante de destruição de turbulência no estado desacoplado, papel que era ocupado pela destruição térmica no modelo de Costa et al. (2011). Os resultados coroboram a hipótese de Van de Weil et al. (2012), de que o regime muito estável ocorre quando a turbulência não é capaz de produzir fluxos de energia na forma de calor sensível capazes de acompanhar a perda de energia por radiação.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Foi investigada a influência dos vórtices coerentes na estrutura da turbulência e no fluxo de momento dentro de uma floresta de coníferas em um planalto alpino na Itália. A presença das estruturas coerentes e suas escalas temporais características foram detectadas ajustando-se as funções de autocorrelação da velocidade com uma função teórica oscilante. A função permitiu diferenciar os dados turbulentos caracterizados por turbulência de escala fina dos dados nos quais a turbulência é dominada por vórtices coerentes gerados no topo do dossel. Foram considerados cinco diferentes regimes de estabilidade , desde a convecção livre (free convection) até a estratificação muito estável (very stable). Foi desenvolvida uma metodologia original e simples para ajustar a função de correlação cruzada (cross-correlation) na presença de comportamentos periódicos no fluxo turbulento de momento. A análise mostrou que perto das condições neutras a escala de tempo mais energética do fluxo de momento é determinada principalmente pela componente longitudinal da velocidade do vento, em vez da vertical. Em condições de convecção livre ou muito estáveis os vórtices coerentes não parecem influenciar o transporte de momento, dominado por estruturas de grande escala. Isso é confirmado pela eficiência da turbulência em escala fina, comparado as estruturas coerentes no transporte turbulento ao longo dos regimes de estabilidade. Por fim, a oscilação das funções de autocorrelação e correlação cruzada das componentes da velocidade do vento na presença de estruturas coerentes é justificada por meio de um modelo estocástico Lagrangiano simplificado The influence of coherent vortices on the turbulence structure and momentum flux is investigated inside a coniferous forest on an Alpine Plateau. The presence of coherence structure and their characteristic timescales are detected by fitting the vertical velocity auto-correlation functions with a theoretical oscillating function. This allowed to discriminate between turbulent data subsets characterized by fine-scale turbulence and data subsets in which turbulence is dominated by coherent vortices generated at the canopy top. Five different stability regimes, from free convection to very stable stratification, were considered in the analysis. An original methodology for fitting cross-correlation function in presence of periodic behaviours is developed and applied to the turbulent momentum flux. The analysis shows how not far from neutral conditions the most energetic time scale of the momentum flux is mainly determined by the longitudinal wind velocity component, rather than vertical one, while in free convection and very stable conditions coherent vortices do not seem to influence the momentum transport, dominated by large scale structures. This is confirmed by the fine-scale turbulence and coherent structures efficiency in turbulence transport throughout the stability regimes. Finally, the oscillation of the auto and cross-correlation functions of the wind velocity components in presence of coherent structures is justified by means of a simplified Lagrangian stochastic model.

The study presents an observational analysis of the terms in the budgets of three planetary boundary-layer second-order statistical moments: turbulent kinetic energy (TKE), heat flux and temperature variance. These have been chosen because they are commonly employed in weather and climate numerical weather forecast schemes. The analysis is done using 172 days and nights of observations carried out at a 30 m micrometeorological tower in southern Brazil, at the campus of Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. Four levels of observations with threedimensional sonic anemometers, deployed at heights of 3, 6, 14 and 30 m form the surface, are used. The analysis is split between daytime (convective) and nighttime (stable) periods. In both cases, the budget terms are considered in terms of the mean wind speed near the surface and of the stability parameter from Monin-Obukhov similarity theory. The terms presented are those of shear production, buoyant production/destruction and dissipation in the TKE budget, thermal gradient production and buoyant production/destruction in the heat flux budget, thermal gradient production and dissipation in the temperature variance budget as well as the turbulent transport terms in the three budgets. Horizontal transport terms and those associated with pressure perturbations have not been observed. At daytime, TKE budget is dominated by shear and buoyant production, while dissipation is the dominant destruction mechanism. The tke budget residual indicates that the transport by pressure perturbations is positive near the surface. At night, shear production and dissipation dominate the budget, while buoyant destruction is smaller, albeit physically relevant. The turbulent transport term switches sign according with the turbulence regime. The diurnal heat flux budget, the dominant term may be either the thermal gradient or buoyant production, depending on the wind speed or stability parameter, while at night they have opposite signs and dominate the budget. Regardless of the period, the temperature variance budget displays a near-equilibrium between thermal gradient production and dissipation. The main aim of the dissertation is to identify the dominant terms in the budgets and their dependence on the mean wind speed and stability. Neste estudo é feita uma análise observacional de termos dos balanços de momentos estatísticos de segunda ordem na camada limite planetária como a energia cinética turbulenta (ECT), o fluxo de calor e a variância de temperatura, por serem mais comumente utilizados em esquemas de modelos numéricos de previsão de tempo e clima. A análise é feita a partir de 172 dias e noites de observações em uma torre micrometeorológica de 30 m no sul do Brasil, na cidade de Santa Maria, localizada no Campus da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. São utilizados quatro níveis de observação com anemômetros sônicos tridimensionais, instalados em alturas de 3, 6, 14 e 30 m da superfície. A análise é dividida em períodos diurno (convectivo) e noturno (estável), e em ambos os casos os termos são relacionados em função do vento médio próximo a superfície, e de um parâmetro de estabilidade. Aqui são apresentados os termos de produção mecânica, produção/destruição térmica e dissipação da equação do balanço de ECT; os termos de produção pelo gradiente térmico e de produção/destruição térmica da equação do fluxo de calor; os termos de produção por gradiente e de dissipação de variância de temperatura e os termos de transporte por turbulência nos três balanços. Não são observados os termos associados ao transporte horizontal ou a perturbações de pressão. No período diurno, no balanço de ECT a produção por cisalhamento e flutuabilidade térmica tem papel dominante, enquanto o termo de dissipação é o principal mecanismo de destruição de turbulência e o resíduo indica que o termo de transporte de pressão é positivo próximo a superfície. No período noturno, a produção por cisalhamento e a dissipação são os termos dominantes, enquanto a flutuabilidade térmica (destruição) é o menor em magnitude. O termo de transporte por flutuações de pressão depende do regime de turbulência para análise. No balanço de fluxo de calor diurno, o termo dominante depende da velocidade média do vento ou estabilidade, e a destruição é relacionada ao termo de covariância de pressão, deduzido pelo resíduo do balanço e à noite o termo de flutuabilidade é um mecanismo de destruição relevante e depende do regime de turbulência na camada limite estável. Independente do período, o balanço de variância de temperatura, mostra um equilíbrio entre o termo de produção do gradiente térmico e a dissipação. O principal objetivo da dissertação é identificar os termos dominantes nos balanços e sua dependência da velocidade do vento médio e estabilidade.

Among the causes associated with the variability in the mean wind velocity required for the transition of regimes in the stable boundary layer (SBL) in differente sites, are local characteristics of the experimental site, such as surface roughness length, surface radiation balance and thermal properties of the soil. Most studies analyse the influence of these parameters on the transition of regimes in the stable boundary layer either uses models or analyzes each of the external parameters separately. Thus, the present study proposes to identify which external parameters control the regime transition in SBL. Dentre as causas associadas à variabilidade na velocidade média do vento necessária para a transição de regimes na camada limite estável (CLE) nos diferentes locais, estão características locais do sítio experimental, tais como, comprimento de rugosidade super- ficial, o saldo de radiação em superfície e as propriedades térmicas do solo. A maioria dos trabalhos que estuda a influência desses parâmetros sobre a transição de regimes na camada limite estável ou utiliza modelos ou analisa cada um dos parâmetros externos separadamente. Dessa forma, o presente estudo propõe identificar quais são parâmetros externos que exercem controle sobre a transição de regimes de escoamento na CLE.
