Circulating factors in the blood and the integrity of organ barriers can become dysfunctional, resulting in a condition known as leaky syndrome. This condition involves the unregulated exchange or leakage of components between organs. However, the triggers of leaky syndrome, as well as its role in aging-related disorders and illnesses, remain largely unknown. In this editorial, we discuss potential mechanisms that originate from the gut and resident microbes (microbiome) to contribute in leaky syndrome. Furthermore, we explore how the food we consume can impact the development of leaky syndrome, potentially influencing the biology of aging and challenges to diagnose the leaky gut condition accurately and clinically.Keywords: leaky, gut, syndrome, microbiome, inflammation, barrier

Abstract

Introduction: The aim of this prospective study was to see whether LD-1227, a quality-controlled marine nutraceuticals shown to protect experimental stress-induced hyppocampal degeneration, could beneficially modulate BDNF, as measured in the serum, in otherwise healthy but work-stressed individuals. Materials and Methods: Forty-eight men and women between the ages of 38 and 62 reporting high-demanding work activity but with an overall positive attitude towards their personal life were recruited. Subjects were divided in two group (24 patients each) and blindly supplemented for 2 month with: a) LD-1227 400mg or b) placebo. A third group of healthy non-stressed subjects was used as well. Blood samples were taken before and after the supplementation period. Unstimulated saliva was collected and tested for amylase while serum levels were used to measure BDNF. State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and psychological wellbeing assessment (PSWB) were measured too. Patients with Val66Met functional polymorphism of BDNF excluded those given their reported association with an impaired release of BDNF. Results: Results showed that, as compared to healthy, nonstressed individuals, stressed ones has a trend decrease of BDNF and this was significantly increased by LD 12-1227 supplementation and the same inverse phenomenon occurred to salivary amylase (p

Abstract

Indoor Mobile Mapping Systems (IMMS) are attracting growing attention, especially when LiDAR sensors are considered, thanks to the possibility to obtain wide range and complete data in those areas where GNSS signal is not available. However, the drift error that accumulates during the acquisition is often inadequate in the absence of quality constraints in case of extensive acquisitions. Concurrently, recent developments regarding multicamera mobile solutions have shown promising results in containing the drift error, but data produced are too noisy and not enough complete in terms of acquisition range. This paper compares a Laser Scanner IMMS and a multicamera system in a stress test concerning the survey of a complex and extended route. The two systems are the Laser Scanner Backpack IMMS Heron MS Twin Color produced by Gexcel and a laboratory prototype of a handheld photogrammetric multicamera named Ant3D. The objectives are to calculate and compare the drift errors and to evaluate the quality of the produced point clouds. Quantitative results demonstrate that the drift error per meter of trajectory for the Heron Backpack is 10 times greater than the one of the multicamera. From a qualitative aspect, Heron Backpack generates 3D data in a wider range, allowing a more complete reconstruction of the environment when compared to the multicamera system one. On the other hand, the encumbrance and manoeuvrability of Ant3D make it more versatile in surveying very narrow spaces.

Abstract

Indoor Mobile Mapping Systems (IMMSs) technologies are becoming increasingly popular thanks to the possibility of acquiring a massive amount of 3D data in a fast and effective way in those areas where GNSS signal is unavailable, like urban canyons, densely vegetated areas, underground sites and buildings. They offer an efficient way to produce point clouds but with noticeably lower accuracy than the traditional Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). The present paper wants to analyse two different methods to improve the accuracy of the point cloud coming from an IMMS survey in a vast urban scenario. The first approach uses points collected during an RTK GNSS survey as Ground Control Points (GCPs). The second one involves TLS static scans as Ground Control Scans (GCSs). Both these procedures allow us to introduce constraints before generating the rigid final point cloud. The tested IMMS is the Backpack Heron MS Twin Color, produced by Gexcel S.r.l. The instrument was tested during the acquisition of the historical centre of Meda (MB) in the northern part of Italy. Results show that in those areas between the constraints, the maximum error of residuals on checkpoints is some decimetres. The IMMS has allowed us to quickly survey a vast area not otherwise obtainable with traditional survey techniques. The developed procedures proved to be essential for proper reconstruction of the environment.

Abstract

During the menopause women may experience increased oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant capacity and, together with the decline of neurosteroids, this represents a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. The aim of the present study was to test a functional food (FPP-ORI, Osato Research Institute, Gifu, Japan) on redox and mitochondrial efficiency in post-menopausal women. The study population consisting of 69 untreated post-menopausal women were given supplements as follows: Group A was given a multivitamin (MV) 1c 2 times a day, and group B was given FPP 4.5 g 2 times a day. Group C consisted of 23 fertile premenopausal women as the control group. The tests carried out on entry, and at 3 and 6 months were erythrocyte redox parameters, plasma oxidated proteins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) mitochondria cytochrome c oxidase Vmax activity. Abstract

Lactose intolerance is a pathology frequently encountered today. It occurs when the activity of lactase in the intestine is reduced or absent, with consequent failure to digest lactose. The global prevalence of this clinical condition is estimated of about 57% with instrumental methods, while the real prevalence exceeds 65%. The absence of lactase determines both the excessive osmotic load in the small intestine and the fermentation of lactose by the bacterial flora with consequent production of short-chain fatty acids and gas. This latter process is responsible for the onset of symptoms associated with lactose intolerance (abdominal pain, bloating, flatulence, etc.) which arise after the intake of lactose. Several studies have shown an increased risk of developing various pathologies for lactose-intolerant subjects (some types of cancer, osteoporosis, etc.). Therefore, it is essential to diagnose and properly treat this pathology. Various options exist for diagnosing lactose intolerance: Hydrogen Breath Test, genetic test, Quick Lactose Intolerant Test, Lactose Tolerance Test, Gaxilose Test. Like diagnostic methods, there are several options for treating intolerance. In addition to a food restriction, the use of exogenous enzymes and/or probiotic and the selection of milk containing specific types of beta-caseins less correlated to the appearance of gastrointestinal symptoms are very useful. The aim of this review is to illustrate the main and most modern diagnostic and therapeutic choices for lactose intolerance currently available.
