Abstract

In this study, the qualitative changes in raw birch sap after freezing and thawing were determined. Ten-liter bottles and one-ton plastic containers with six replications were used for the freezing of birch sap and thawing of frozen sap. During and after the thawing, the physical and physical–chemical properties of the sap were measured. According to the results, as the ice melts, the concentration of acids and other soluble substances in the sap decreases, but changes in qualitative indicators indicate the beginning of fermentation processes through color changes and pH as the temperature of the melting sap becomes positive. As a result, to freeze raw sap in large-volume containers, it is necessary to develop fast thawing technology using auxiliary means—circulation, external energy sources, and mechanical ice crushing. 10. Impact of nitrogen pollution disturbances on forest vegetation and fungi near a fertilizer factory

Abstract

The study compared the reaction of different organism groups to nitrogen pollution near a nitrogen factory. Investigations were conducted in an area affected by a nitrogen fertilizer factory (JSC Achema), in central Lithuania. The study was performed in eight permanent plots established for monitoring purposes at different distances (from 2 to 20 km) from the factory, mainly in a prevailing northeast wind direction. The vascular plants, bryophytes and fungi, including lichens, were recorded. The species number of the different organism groups reacted differently to the distance from the factory. The species number of lichens and fungi increased with increasing distance from the nitrogen factory. The number of species of vascular plants was highest near the factory. The number of bryophytes did not correlate with the distance from the factory. Nitrophilic species, Chelidonium majus, Rubus idaeus, Sambucus rasemosa, and Impatiens parviflora, were most common, especially near the factory. A majority of the macrolichens, including epixylic species, reacted extremely negatively to NO2 and NH3, and species richness and abundance increased significantly farther from the air pollution source. Fungi did not react significantly to higher NH3 or NO2 concentrations in the air, and the distance from the factory was not an important variable.

11. Integrated effect of environmental changes on forest ecosystems in Lithuania: Strategies for adaptation to and mitigation of the main threats of global climate change

Abstract

Field-measured forest productivity and its time series are crucial to understanding the impact of climate change on the main tree species increment and stand productivity in general. In this study, the causative relationships between environmental factors, such as O3 fluxes and tree ring width formation, including stem sap flow intensity, in the prevalent Lithuanian tree species (Picea abies (L.) Karst, Pinus sylvestris L., Betula pendula, and Betula pubescens ) growing under different nutritional and moisture conditions in northeastern Lithuania were examined. We hope that this information will help us assess a trees capacity to adapt to and mitigate recent global clima te changes. Continuous monitoring of the tree stem increment from annual to hourly scales was crucial for this study. The obtained data revealed that Norway spruce trees are appropriately adapted to current climatic conditions in temperate forests. Even du ring a drought episode, spruce stem increment exceeded the increment of the rest of the studied tree species; therefore, they had the highest water use efficiency compared to the rest of the tree species in the study. O3 fluxed through the stomata at an ho urly scale, stimulating the stem shrinking process more intensively than inhibiting the swelling process, but only for pine and birch trees. Spruce trees demonstrated the highest sensitivity to O3 because O3 significantly affected the stem swelling process. Pine trees were less sensitive to O3 damage, and birch trees were the least affected. Reduced tree growth intensity and the weak relationship between birch tree radial increment and the main meteorological parameters indicate that birch trees have the lo west adaptive capacity to recent environmental changes of the tree species in this study.

Abstract

In ecological forest management, it is essential to find compromises between environmental and society's economic demands. In intensively managed forests dominated by clear-cutting, the effect appears beyond the management area. The effects can be seen up to 120m from the clear-cut area. A variety in the size of clear-cuts creates different conditions for birds and biodiversity and might be useful management tool to create a diverse environment on the landscape level. Thinning is a common silvicultural practice in most forests, we found negative short-term effect, however, we do not consider long-term negative impact on biodiversity. Tree retention and deadwood conservation during the final felling is an essential tool for the creation of long-term close-to-natural conditions in forests.

Abstract

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is an alien species that is commonly planted in devastated lands, parks, residential gardens and is used as a nectar source for bees. However, the Japanese government has designated this species as an “Industrial exotic species under watch" because its rapid growth and reproductive capacity allows it to outcompete indigenous vegetation. Field surveys revealed that the back locust spreads through its sprouting roots and the elongation of its horizontal roots at soil depths between 0 and 10 cm. A practical method to regulate the spread of black locust would be to suppress the development of horizontal roots. Based on a nursery experiment, we propose the use of root-barrier panels to block and suppress the growth of horizontal roots. Monitoring the growth of roots in the field is labor-intensive, so we investigated the impact of root-barrier panels on shoot development by measuring the length of sprouting roots, the decrease in secondary flush, the increase in yellowed leaflets, and impact on plant height in a nursery setting. We concluded that root-barrier panels set at a depth of 30 cm effectively inhibited the growth of the horizontal roots of young black locust less than 3years old.

Abstract

In the context of global change, the integration of non-native tree (NNT) species into European forestry is increasingly being discussed. The ecological consequences of increasing use or spread of NNTs in European forests are highly uncertain, as the scientific evidence is either constraint to results from case studies with limited spatial extent, or concerns global assessments that lack focus on European NNTs. For either case, generalisations on European NNTs are challenging to draw. Here we compile data on the impacts of seven important NNTs (Acacia dealbata, Ailanthus altissima, Eucalyptus globulus, Prunus serotina, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Quercus rubra, Robinia pseudoacacia) on physical and chemical soil properties and diversity attributes in Europe, and summarise commonalities and differences. From a total of 103 publications considered, studies on diversity attributes were overall more frequent than studies on soil properties. The effects on soil properties varied greatly among tree species and depended on the respective soil property. Overall, increasing (45%) and decreasing (45%) impacts on soil occurred with similar frequency. In contrast, decreasing impacts on biodiversity were much more frequent (66%) than increasing ones (24%). Species phylogenetically distant from European tree species, such as Acacia dealbata, Eucalyptus globulus and Ailanthus altissima, showed the strongest decreasing impacts on biodiversity. Our results suggest that forest managers should be cautious in using NNTs, as a majority of NNT stands host fewer species when compared with native tree species or ecosystems, likely reflected in changes in biotic interactions and ecosystem functions. The high variability of impacts suggests that individual NNTs should be assessed separately, but NNTs that lack European relatives should be used with particular caution.

Abstract

Various processes that occur in forest soils have significant roles in the forest carbon cycle and contribute to soil CO2 efflux. Soil CO2 efflux occurs via a combination between the metabolism of soil microorganisms and the respiration of plant roots. It releases around 10 times more CO2 than all anthropogenic factors combined. For this reason, diurnal and seasonal carbon efflux rates were measured in Lithuanian Scots pine (P. sylvestris) forests to determine soil CO2 efflux rates and the relative importance of various climatic factors that can influence belowground conditions. The aim of this study was to determine the factors that have the strongest influence on variation in forest soil CO2 efflux and the mutual influence between the factors, in order to attain a clearer understanding of C sinks. We took measurements of soil CO2 efflux to examine diurnal and seasonal variation. For the continuous measurement of CO2 efflux, an ADC BioScientific LCpro+ soil respiration analysis system was used. The main parameters that were measured were CO2 efflux (µmol m-2 s-1), air temperature (°C) in the chamber, soil temperature (°C) at a depth of 10 cm and water evaporation (mmol m-2 s-1). The diurnal rate values fluctuated within a certain range (2.78-6.17 µmol m-2 s-1), while seasonal variations fluctuated more, but the average CO2 efflux rate was between 2 - 4 µmol m-2 s-1. The highest CO2 efflux rate recorded during daytime was from 16:00-20:00, and the lowest one was early in the morning, between 05:00-08:00. During the seasonal soil CO2 efflux study, it was found that peak forest growth was related to peak efflux rates. These rates were observed from early to mid-June. The collected data suggest that SM (soil moisture) has a weaker connection with the efflux rate but had an impact on Ts (soil temperature), dampening its effect on soil CO2 efflux. These results demonstrate that the soil CO2 efflux of P. sylvestris forests in the cool climatic zone of Lithuania depend most heavily on soil temperature and soil moisture. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Forest ecosystems of different tree species participate actively in climatic and biotic processes, such as photosynthesis, plant and soil respiration, therefore knowledge of soil respiration, especially of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere is of great importance. The aim of the study was to determine soil respiration rate of stands of deciduous (Betula pubescens Ehrh., Quercus robur L.) and coniferous (Larix eurolepis Henry, Thuja occidentalis L.) tree species as well as impact of abiotic (soil temperature, humidity, electrical conductivity, pH) and biotic (abundance of undergrowth, shrub, herbs) factors. Measurements of CO2 emissions, temperature, moisture and electrical conductivity were performed in-situ in the stands of different tree species with portable ADC BioScientific LCpro+ system and digital electrochemical device "Wet" (Delta-T). Soil samples were collected for the physicochemical analysis simultaneously. Chemical analysis of soil samples was done at the lab of the Environmental Research of the Aleksandras Stulginskis University by standard methods. Soil respiration was highest in the stand of Thuja occidentalis and lowest in the stand of Betula pubescens. Soil respiration intensity of the tree stands increased as follow: Thuja< Quercus< Larix< Betula. In the coniferous tree stands, the soil respiration was lower on average 27% comparing to deciduous tree stands. Soil respiration rate increased with increase of herbaceous vegetation cover and temperature. Soil respiration rate was mostly influenced by abundance of herbaceous vegetation (r = 0.91) of all biotic factors investigated, while soil temperature (r = 0.75) of abiotic factors. 60 years old stands of different tree species formed specific conditions what influenced different soil respiration rates.
