Abstract

We present the dynamics of a single harmonically trapped ion interacting with a laser, considering a linear combination of two eigenstates of the system as the initial state. The conditions on the physical parameters that allow for the evolution of the system are discussed. We are able to obtain analytical results even though no approximations are realized and are able to show Rabi oscillations for such initial states., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The use of hyperspectral imaging for medical applications is becoming more common in recent years. One of the main obstacles that researchers find when developing hyperspectral algorithms for medical applications is the lack of specific, publicly available, and hyperspectral medical data. The work described in this paper was developed within the framework of the European project HELICoiD (HypErspectraL Imaging Cancer Detection), which had as a main goal the application of hyperspectral imaging to the delineation of brain tumors in real-time during neurosurgical operations. In this paper, the methodology followed to generate the first hyperspectral database of in-vivo human brain tissues is presented. Data was acquired employing a customized hyperspectral acquisition system capable of capturing information in the Visual and Near InfraRed (VNIR) range from 400 to 1000 nm. Repeatability was assessed for the cases where two images of the same scene were captured consecutively. The analysis reveals that the system works more efficiently in the spectral range between 450 and 900 nm. A total of 36 hyperspectral images from 22 different patients were obtained. From these data, more than 300 000 spectral signatures were labeled employing a semi-automatic methodology based on the spectral angle mapper algorithm. Four different classes were defined: normal tissue, tumor tissue, blood vessel, and background elements. Abstract

Background: Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods: This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results: 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Severe complications (Clavien-Dindo ≥ 3b) were higher in the HP group (P < 0.001). 30-day mortality was higher in HP patients (13.7%), especially in case of bowel perforation and diffused peritonitis. 1-year follow-up showed no differences on ostomy reversal rate between HP and RPA. (P = 0.127). A backward likelihood logistic regression model showed that RPA was preferred in younger patients, having low ASA score (≤ 3), in case of large bowel obstruction, absence of colonic ischemia, longer time from admission to surgery, operating early at the day working hours, by a surgeon who performed more than 50 colorectal resections. Conclusions: After 100 years since the first Hartmann’s procedure, HP remains the most common treatment for left-sided colorectal emergencies. Treatment’s choice depends on patient characteristics, the time of surgery and the experience of the surgeon. RPA should be considered as the gold standard for surgery, with HP being an exception.

19. State of the Art on Forensic Bridge Engineering in Chile. A Management and Technical Overview.

Abstract

Chile is a country highly affected by natural hazards, especially scour and seismic phenomena. Therefore, throughout the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first, total or partial collapses of bridges have been evidenced, particularly those that occurred in the 1960 and 2010 earthquakes. From these experiences, the Chilean Highway Administration has promoted a series of management activities in order to reduce the number of collapsed structures. In this context, since 2019 the Ministry of Public Works of Chile (MOP) supported by the Chilean universities started a program to develop the subject of forensic engineering on bridges, in order to include the methodology in the technical codes and provide a standardization of protocols for the implementation of activities in the case of the collapse of structures. The aspects included in this methodology are: Determination of volatile and non-volatile information; Actions for intervention on the structure and protection of users; Gathering of technical information through the application of tests; Review of stress–strain states through Finite Element Method (FEM); Elaboration of hypotheses and review of them through a decision tree; and, finally, Conclusions and recommendations from a technical and contractual perspective. This paper presents a detailed description of the current forensic engineering methodology in Chile and its first application in the Cancura Bridge case study. In addition, a historical compilation of Chilean bridge collapses is presented, in each case identifying the typology of the structure, the causes of collapse and the main inspection techniques used. Finally, a statistical review is carried out analyzing aspects such as stages of the life cycle where collapse has occurred: design, construction or operation, and the incidence of natural hazards in these phenomena. From this analysis, the cases of Loncomilla, Cancura and Huasco bridges are highlighted. Since the collapse of these bridges occurred without the implementation of current methodology, the article concludes on the advantages and disadvantages of the methodology, providing a comparative analysis with the inspection activities in these structures. Abstract

We present a Tight-Binding Molecular Dynamics investigation of the stability, the geometrical and the electronic structure of suspended monatomic transition metal chains. We show that linear and stable monatomic chains are formed at temperature equal or smaller than 500 K for Au, 200 K for Ag and 4 K for Cu. We also evidence that such stability is associated with the persisting sd orbital hybridization along the chains. The study highlight fundamental limitations of conductance measurement experiments to detect these chains in the breaking process of nanowires.

Abstract

We performed density functional theory and tight-binding molecular dynamics calculations to investigate the formation of suspended linear atom chains when stretching gold nanowires along the [110] crystal orientation. We determined that chain formation can occur only when the crystal symmetry is broken in the early stages of the elongation process. Such crystallographic asymmetry can be induced by stretching the wire along a slightly off-axis tensile direction or by introducing thermal fluctuations. Abstract

Magnetism in bare uncapped gold nano-clusters is explored from a density functional theory perspective with scalar relativistic effects included via the pseudo-potential. The computed electronic structures of various nano-clusters reveal that permanent size-dependent spin-polarization appears without geometry relaxation for bare clusters even though bulk gold is diamagnetic. The polarized ground states for clusters are favorable due to the hybridization of the s and d orbitals, and bare octahedral clusters are expected to be magnetic for cluster sizes of approximately 38 atoms and larger. Much larger clusters will be diamagnetic when the surface-to-volume ratio is small and the core diamagnetism prevails. Moderate changes in the inter-atomic distances and cluster geometry are shown not to alter this conclusion. Contrary to LDA and EAM predictions, GGA and hybrid geometry optimizations reveal increased inter-atomic bond distances in bare gold clusters relative to the bulk lattice values. 31. Overcoming the relative bandwidth limitations of single VCO frequency synthesizers by implementing a novel PLL architecture.

Abstract

Frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar systems profit from increasing the absolute bandwidths of the generated frequency chirps to improve range resolution. As the relative bandwidth of SiGe-voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) is limited to about 80%, increasing the center frequency fundamentally or via frequency multiplication is the most direct way to increase that absolute bandwidth. However, as some applications require penetration depth, which dramatically decreases with frequency, other solutions are necessary. Therefore, state-of-the-art concepts rely on the down-conversion of generated frequency chirps via two separately stabilized frequency sources. This article implements a novel architecture, offering relative bandwidths of >100% within a single phase-locked loop (PLL). Therefore, two VCOs at different center frequencies are fed into a down-conversion mixer, whose output is directly stabilized via that PLL with one loop filter generating both tuning voltages. Those circuit blocks can be summarized as one equivalent VCO, offering a higher relative bandwidth and a significantly more linear tuning curve. Thereby, a solution to limited relative bandwidths with high VCO gain variation of single VCO synthesizers is offered while substantially reducing the hardware and implementation effort compared to the state-of-the-art.
