In this paper, we present a numerical technique for performing Lie advection of arbitrary differential forms. Leveraging advances in high-resolution finite volume methods for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws, we first discretize the interior product (also called contraction) through integrals over Eulerian approximations of extrusions. This, along with Cartan's homotopy formula and a discrete exterior derivative, can then be used to derive a discrete Lie derivative. The optimal control of a mechanical system is of crucial importance in many realms. Typical examples are the determination of a time-minimal path in vehicle dynamics, a minimal energy trajectory in space mission design, or optimal motion sequences in robotics and biomechanics. In most cases, some sort of discretization of the original, infinite-dimensional optimization problem has to be performed in order to make the problem amenable to computations. The approach proposed in this paper is to directly discretize the variational description of the system's motion. The resulting optimization algorithm lets the discrete solution directly inherit characteristic structural properties from the continuous one like symmetries and integrals of the motion. We show that the DMOC approach is equivalent to a finite difference discretization of Hamilton's equations by a symplectic partitioned Runge-Kutta scheme and employ this fact in order to give a proof of convergence. The numerical performance of DMOC and its relationship to other existing optimal control methods are investigated.

In this note, which is of general stability theory interest, we discuss some of the key assertions usually stated in the context of the transition to turbulence problem. In particular, the two main points made here in the setting of the transition problem are (i) the crucial dependence of the stability results on whether the problem is considered on infinite or semi-infinite domain, and (ii) the energy conservation by the nonlinear terms of the Navier-Stokes equations. As an application, we demonstrate that the Couette flow, when analyzed in the mathematical setting most correctly reflecting the way the experiments are usually done, is spectrally unstable for finite Reynolds numbers in apparent contradiction to the commonly accepted classical century-old results. Also, the interrelation of various stability notions, the effects of infinite dimensionality, the covariant nature of the transition phenomena and how non-normality of the linear operators and finite-amplitude instability fit into this picture are discussed as well., Comment: 12 pages

This work uncovers the low-dimensional nature the complex dynamics of actuated separated flows. Namely, motivated by the problem of model-based predictive control of separated flows, we identify the requirements on a model-based observer and the key variables and propose a prototype model in the case of thick airfoils as motivated by practical applications. The approach in this paper differs fundamentally from the logic behind known models, which are either linear or based on POD-truncations and are unable to reflect even the crucial bifurcation and hysteresis inherent in separation phenomena. This new look at the problem naturally leads to several important implications, such as, firstly, uncovering the physical mechanisms for hysteresis, secondly, predicting a finite amplitude instability of the bubble, and thirdly to new issues to be studied theoretically and tested experimentally. More importantly, by employing systematic reasoning, the low-dimensional nature of these complex phenomena at the coarse level is revealed.

This paper extends the derivation of the Lagrangian averaged Euler (LAE-$\alpha$) equations to the case of barotropic compressible flows. The aim of Lagrangian averaging is to regularize the compressible Euler equations by adding dispersion instead of artificial viscosity. Along the way, the derivation of the isotropic and anisotropic LAE-$\alpha$ equations is simplified and clarified. The derivation in this paper involves averaging over a tube of trajectories $\eta^\epsilon$ centered around a given Lagrangian flow $\eta$. With this tube framework, the Lagrangian averaged Euler (LAE-$\alpha$) equations are derived by following a simple procedure: start with a given action, Taylor expand in terms of small-scale fluid fluctuations $\xi$, truncate, average, and then model those terms that are nonlinear functions of $\xi$. In this paper we consider the Hamiltonian formulation of the equations of incompressible ideal fluid flow from the point of view of optimal control theory. The equations are compared to the finite symmetric rigid body equations analyzed earlier by the authors. We discuss various aspects of the Hamiltonian structure of the Euler equations and show in particular that the optimal control approach leads to a standard formulation of the Euler equations -- the so-called impulse equations in their Lagrangian form. We discuss various other aspects of the Euler equations from a pedagogical point of view. We show that the Hamiltonian in the maximum principle is given by the pairing of the Eulerian impulse density with the velocity. We provide a comparative discussion of the flow equations in their Eulerian and Lagrangian form and describe how these forms occur naturally in the context of optimal control. We present a geometric analysis of the incompressible averaged Euler equations for an ideal inviscid fluid. We show that solutions of these equations are geodesics on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group of a new weak right invariant pseudo metric. We prove that for precompact open subsets of ${\mathbb R}^n$, this system of PDEs with Dirichlet boundary conditions are well-posed for initial data in the Hilbert space $H^s$, $s>n/2+1$. We then use a nonlinear Trotter product formula to prove that solutions of the averaged Euler equations are a regular limit of solutions to the averaged Navier-Stokes equations in the limit of zero viscosity. This system of PDEs is also the model for second-grade non-Newtonian fluids.

There is a well developed and useful theory of Hamiltonian reduction for semidirect products, which applies to examples such as the heavy top, compressible fluids and MHD, which are governed by Lie-Poisson type equations. In this paper we study the Lagrangian analogue of this process and link it with the general theory of Lagrangian reduction; that is the reduction of variational principles. These reduced variational principles are interesting in their own right since they involve constraints on the allowed variations, analogous to what one finds in the theory of nonholonomic systems with the Lagrange d'Alembert principle. Low's well known action principle for the Maxwell-Vlasov equations of ideal plasma dynamics was originally expressed in terms of a mixture of Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. By imposing suitable constraints on the variations and analyzing invariance properties of the Lagrangian, as one does for the Euler equations for the rigid body and ideal fluids, we first transform this action principle into purely Eulerian variables. Hamilton's principle for the Eulerian description of Low's action principle then casts the Maxwell-Vlasov equations into Euler-Poincare form for right invariant motion on the diffeomorphism group of position-velocity phase space, R^6. Legendre transforming the Eulerian form of Low's action principle produces the Hamiltonian formulation of these equations in the Eulerian description. Since it arises from Euler-Poincare equations, this Hamiltonian formulation can be written in terms of a Poisson structure that contains the Lie-Poisson bracket on the dual of a semidirect product Lie algebra. Because of degeneracies in the Lagrangian, the Legendre transform is dealt with using the Dirac theory of constraints. Another Maxwell-Vlasov Poisson structure is known, whose ingredients are the Lie-Poisson bracket on the dual of the Lie algebra of symplectomorphisms of phase space and the Born-Infeld brackets for the Maxwell field. We discuss the relationship between these two Hamiltonian formulations. We study Euler-Poincare systems (i.e., the Lagrangian analogue of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems) defined on semidirect product Lie algebras. We first give a derivation of the Euler-Poincare equations for a parameter dependent Lagrangian by using a variational principle of Lagrange d'Alembert type. Then we derive an abstract Kelvin-Noether theorem for these equations. We also explore their relation with the theory of Lie-Poisson Hamiltonian systems defined on the dual of a semidirect product Lie algebra. The Legendre transformation in such cases is often not invertible; so it does not produce a corresponding Euler-Poincare system on that Lie algebra. We avoid this potential difficulty by developing the theory of Euler-Poincare systems entirely within the Lagrangian framework. We apply the general theory to a number of known examples, including the heavy top, ideal compressible fluids and MHD. We also use this framework to derive higher dimensional Camassa-Holm equations, which have many potentially interesting analytical properties. These equations are Euler-Poincare equations for geodesics on diffeomorphism groups (in the sense of the Arnold program) but where the metric is H^1 rather than L^2., Comment: 72 pages, LATeX, no figures
