Abstract

The microwave spectra of three isotopologues of the gas-phase heterodimer formed between cis-1,2-difluoroethylene and hydrogen chloride are obtained in the 5–21 GHz region using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. The molecular structure, determined from the analysis of the spectra and supported by quantum chemistry calculations, has the hydrogen atom of the hydrogen chloride molecule interacting with both fluorine atoms of the fluoroethylene and no interaction between the chlorine atom and the olefin. Although the equilibrium structure has two inequivalent H⋯F interactions, zero-point motion averages over the two equivalent choices for these interactions, rendering the pairs of like atoms (C, H, and F) of the fluoroethylene equivalent, retaining the C2v symmetry of the olefin. This results in only one unique singly substituted 13C isotopologue and in the observed effects on transition intensities due to nuclear spin statistics. The heterodimer structure allows for a strong, linear hydrogen bond between the HCl donor and the fluoroethylene acceptor that is more important here than in the analogous acetylene containing complex, where the interaction between the π electrons of acetylene and an electrophilic hydrogen atom on the olefin compensates for the loss of linearity required for binding to a geminal F/H pair. Abstract

Objective To compare adverse events (AEs) of regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) versus heparin anticoagulation during continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) through systematic review and trial sequential analysis. Methods Based upon the relevant randomized control trials (RCT) comparing RCA and heparin anticoagulation during CRRT in both domestic and foreign databases, the authors re-analyzed various AEs including at least one of the following episodes: hypocalcemia, metabolic acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, hemorrhage and heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). Meta-analysis was performed with Revman 5.2 and TSA 0.9 software for trial sequential analysis (TSA). Results Among a total of 791 items, 18 articles were included. Abstract

Evidence-informed decision making in clinical care and policy in nephrology is undermined by trials that selectively report a large number of heterogeneous outcomes, many of which are not patient centered. The Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology-Hemodialysis (SONG-HD) Initiative convened an international consensus workshop on November 7, 2015, to discuss the identification and implementation of a potential core outcome set for all trials in hemodialysis. The purpose of this article is to report qualitative analyses of the workshop discussions, describing the key aspects to consider when establishing core outcomes in trials involving patients on hemodialysis therapy. Key stakeholders including 8 patients/caregivers and 47 health professionals (nephrologists, policymakers, industry, and researchers) attended the workshop. Attendees suggested that identifying core outcomes required equitable stakeholder engagement to ensure relevance across patient populations, flexibility to consider evolving priorities over time, deconstruction of language and meaning for conceptual consistency and clarity, understanding of potential overlap and associations between outcomes, and an assessment of applicability to the range of interventions in hemodialysis. For implementation, they proposed that core outcomes must have simple, inexpensive, and validated outcome measures that could be used in clinical care (quality indicators) and trials (including pragmatic trials) and endorsement by regulatory agencies. Integrating these recommendations may foster acceptance and optimize the uptake and translation of core outcomes in hemodialysis, leading to more informative research, for better treatment and improved patient outcomes.

Abstract

Most haptic actuators available on the market today can generate only a single modality of stimuli. This ultimately limits the capacity of a kinaesthetic haptic controller to deliver more expressive feedback, requiring a haptic controller to integrate multiple actuators to generate complex haptic stimuli, with a corresponding complexity of construction and control. To address this, we designed a haptic controller to deliver several modalities of kinaesthetic haptic feedback using a single actuator: a flywheel, the orientation of which is controlled by two gimbals capable of rotating over 360 degrees, in combination with a flywheel brake. This enables the controller to generate multiple haptic feedback modalities, such as torque feedback, impact simulation, low-frequency high-amplitude vibrations, inertial effects (the sensation of momentum), and complex haptic output effects such as the experience of vortex-like forces (whirl effects). By combining these diverse haptic effects, the controller enriches the haptic dimension of VR environments. 27. Public School Administrator Competencies: A Comparison of the Perceptions of Stakeholders in Alabama.

Abstract

This paper assesses the attitudes of multiple stakeholders toward competencies for public-school leaders in Alabama. It examines the views of various groups in the state's education system--teachers, parents, practitioners, and professors of educational leadership--to determine differences in perceptions regarding the perceived importance of different skill areas. A unique instrument that incorporated the six Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium standards for educational administrators was developed for the survey. Based on 242 usable responses, the findings suggest that Alabama public-school stakeholders consider ethics as the most important competency for school administrators. School culture was the next important standard, followed by vision, management, collaboration, and political context. Parents' response patterns were most similar to practitioners' opinions. Responses from teachers and selected professors were interesting in that both groups ranked the standards the same in order of importance: school culture, ethics, vision, management, collaboration, and political context. Teachers and parents placed more importance on current technologies that support management functions than did educational leadership professors. The results suggest that participants possess a common understanding of the many roles of public-school leaders, and that all groups should learn more about the skill areas of those who serve as instructional leaders. Abstract

The reported work constituted the third phase of a programme of research into the performance of concrete pipes during installation by the pipe-jacked tunnelling technique. This third stage was a continuation of the on-site monitoring of full-scale pipe jacks during construction. Four schemes were monitored in different ground conditions: London clay, dense fine sand below the water table, stiff glacial till and soft alluvial clay. Pipe sizes ranged from 1000mm to 1800mm internal diameter and excavation methods included hand tools, slurry machines and an open face tunnel boring machine. The main objective was to collect information on jacking loads and stresses at the pipe-soil interface to provide a better basis for future designs. This was achieved by building twelve stress cells -capable of measuring total normal stresses, shear stresses and pore pressures - into the wall of a standard concrete jacking pipe that could be inserted anywhere in the pipe string. Jacking loads and forward movement of the pipe string were simultaneously recorded and the results were correlated against site activities, including lubrication operations, and tunnel alignment surveys. Another objective was to monitor the ground response by measuring displacements around the tunnel and ground pressures above the perpendicular to the intended line. Ground movements were measured using conventional surveying techniques for surface settlements, and inclinometer access tubes for sub-surface deformation. On one scheme, electro-levels were employed in a near-horizontal tube to measure centre line settlement as the tunnel bore advanced. Push-in spade cells and pneumatic piezometers were installed on two schemes to measure the change in horizontal pressures with the passage of the shield. Because of the myriad data collected, it has only been possible to present a summary of the results obtained. Jacking force records from all the monitored schemes - including the previous fieldwork stage - are presented. The pattern of jacking load build up and the magnitude of frictional resistance can differ significantly according to the type of ground and use of lubricants. Stress measurements at the pipe-soil interface show that the interaction between jacking loads, pipeline misalignment, stoppages, lubrication, excavation technique etc, is highly complex. Ground movement measurements compared to well established empirical predictive methods show that short-term displacements are related to ground losses caused by closure of the overbreak void between shield and pipe.
