14. Role of the methylene amidogen (H2CN) radical in the atmospheres of Titan and Jupiter

Abstract

The methylene amidogen (H2CN) radical can be shown to be an important intermediate in models for the formation of HCN (via N + CH3) and the recombination of H to H2 (via H + HCN) on Titan as well as in models for the formation of HCN (via NH2 + C2H3) in the atmosphere of Jupiter. Experiments in our laboratory in a discharge flow system with mass spectrometric detection of both reactants and products have established that the major product channel (90 percent for the reaction N + CH3 is that leading to H2CN + H. The same result was obtained for N + CD3 yields D2CN + D. The rate constant for the reaction D + D2CN yields DCN + D2 was measured for the first time and k(298 K) greater than 7 x 10(exp -11) cu cm/s was found. The same result was obtained for the H atom reaction. This is the final step in the reaction sequence leading to HCN on both Titan and Jupiter and to formation of H2 from H on Titan. The first measurement of the ionization potentials for H2CN and D2CN was also made. From electron impact studies I.P. = (9.6 + or - 1.0) eV was obtained for both radicals. An upperlimit of I.P. less than 11.6 eV came from observations of the H2CN radical by photoionization mass spectrometry using an Ar resonance lamp (106.7 nm). Further photoionization experiments are planned using synchrotron radiation plus monochromator as a tunable vacuum UV light source.

Abstract

Electron attachment was studied in gaseous dinitrogen pentoxide, N2O5, for incident electron energies between a few meV and 10 eV. No stable parent anion N2O5- was observed but several anionic fragments (NO3-, NO2-, NO-, O-, and O2-) were detected using quadrupole mass spectrometry. Many of these dissociative pathways were found to be coupled and provide detailed information on the dynamics of N2O5 fragmentation. Estimates of the cross sections for production of each of the anionic fragments were made and suggest that electron attachment to N2O5 is amongst the most efficient attachment reactions recorded for nonhalogenated polyatomic systems. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. 16. The influence of intercalating perfluorohexane into lipid shells on nano and microbubble stability

Abstract

Microbubbles are potential diagnostic and therapeutic agents. In vivo stability is important as the bubbles are required to survive multiple passages through the heart and lungs to allow targeting and delivery. Here we have systematically varied key parameters affecting microbubble lifetime to significantly increase in vivo stability. Whilst shell and core composition are found to have an important role in improving microbubble stability, we show that inclusion of small quantities of C6F14 in the microbubble bolus significantly improves microbubble lifetime. Our results indicate that C6F14 inserts into the lipid shell, decreasing surface tension to 19 mN m-1, and increasing shell resistance, in addition to saturating the surrounding medium. Surface area isotherms suggest that C6F14 incorporates into the acyl chain region of the lipid at a high molar ratio, indicating ∼2 perfluorocarbon molecules per 5 lipid molecules. The resulting microbubble boluses exhibit a higher in vivo image intensity compared to commercial compositions, as well as longer lifetimes.

Abstract

The branching ratios for the reaction N+CH3 →Products, have been determined in a discharge-flow system coupled with mass-spectrometric detection of both reactants and products. The major products are H2 CN+H, with about 10% of the reaction proceeding to give HCN+H2 . Experiments carried out on the reaction of N atoms with the deuterated methyl radical showed that the branching ratio for formation of D2 CN+D is about 0.9 and for DCN+D2 formation about 0.1 independent of T from 200 to 363 K. The results are consistent with the energetics and orbital symmetry properties of the reactant and product molecules. Implications for the atmosphere of Titan are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The collation and applications of a comprehensive database of infrared cross-sections of 200 halocarbons and related molecules is described. The first phase of this research was published by Hodnebrog et al. (Reviews of Geophysics, 2013, doi:10.1002/rog.20013) in which cross-sections were drawn from a wide range of laboratory studies in the published literature and, when these were not available, from ab initio calculations. The criteria for selection of particular cross-section data sets will be described. The primary purpose of the database is for use in the calculation of radiative forcing and climate metrics such as the Global Warming Potential, and illustrations of their usage will be given. The work on the database is intended to be an ongoing exercise and the plan is to revise and expand the database as new data become available.
