2. Discovery and Timing of Millisecond Pulsars with the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift-Scan Survey

Abstract

We present the discovery and timing solutions of four millisecond pulsars (MSPs) discovered in the Arecibo 327 MHz Drift-Scan Pulsar Survey. Three of these pulsars are in binary systems, consisting of a redback (PSR J2055+1545), a black widow (PSR J1630+3550), and a neutron star-white dwarf binary (PSR J2116+1345). The fourth MSP, PSR J2212+2450, is isolated. We present the multiyear timing solutions as well as polarization properties across a range of radio frequencies for each pulsar. We perform a multiwavelength search for emission from these systems and find an optical counterpart for PSR J2055+1545 in Gaia DR3, as well as a gamma-ray counterpart for PSR J2116+1345 with the Fermi-LAT telescope. Despite the close colocation of PSR J2055+1545 with a Fermi source, we are unable to detect gamma-ray pulsations, likely due to the large orbital variability of the system. Abstract

Abstract Background In view of the long term discussion on the appropriateness of the dengue classification into dengue fever (DF), dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS), the World Health Organization (WHO) has outlined in its new global dengue guidelines a revised classification into levels of severity: dengue fever with an intermediary group of "dengue fever with warning sings", and severe dengue. The objective of this paper was to compare the two classification systems regarding applicability in clinical practice and surveillance, as well as user-friendliness and acceptance by health staff. Methods A mix of quantitative (prospective and retrospective review of medical charts by expert reviewers, formal staff interviews), semi-quantitative (open questions in staff interviews) and qualitative methods (focus group discussions) were used in 18 countries. Quality control of data collected was undertaken by external monitors. Results The applicability of the DF/DHF/DSS classification was limited, even when strict DHF criteria were not applied (13.7% of dengue cases could not be classified using the DF/DHF/DSS classification by experienced reviewers, compared to only 1.6% with the revised classification). The fact that some severe dengue cases could not be classified in the DF/DHF/DSS system was of particular concern. Both acceptance and perceived user-friendliness of the revised system were high, particularly in relation to triage and case management. The applicability of the revised classification to retrospective data sets (of importance for dengue surveillance) was also favourable. However, the need for training, dissemination and further research on the warning signs was highlighted. Conclusions The revised dengue classification has a high potential for facilitating dengue case management and surveillance.

Abstract

We provide timing solutions for 45 radio pulsars discovered by the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope. These pulsars were found in the Green Bank North Celestial Cap pulsar survey, an all-GBT-sky survey being carried out at a frequency of 350 MHz. We include pulsar timing data from the Green Bank Telescope and Low Frequency Array. Our sample includes five fully recycled millisecond pulsars (MSPs, three of which are in a binary system), a new relativistic double neutron star system, an intermediate mass binary pulsar, a mode-changing pulsar, a 138-ms pulsar with a very low magnetic field, and several nulling pulsars. We have measured two post-Keplerian parameters and thus the masses of both objects in the double neutron star system. We also report a tentative companion mass measurement via Shapiro delay in a binary MSP. Two of the MSPs can be timed with high precision and have been included in pulsar timing arrays being used to search for low-frequency gravitational waves, while a third MSP is a member of the black widow class of binaries. Proper motion is measurable in five pulsars and we provide an estimate of their space velocity. We report on an optical counterpart to a new black widow system and provide constraints on the optical counterparts to other binary MSPs. We also present a preliminary analysis of nulling pulsars in our sample. Abstract

The Balbina hydroelectric dam was built in the 1980s on the Uatumã River to supply electricity to Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Its construction caused a drastic change to the alluvial landscape, forming a large, lentic, artificial reservoir rather than a previously dynamic river system. The objective of our research was to evaluate the impact of the hydroelectric dam on the microevolutionary processes of fish, taking as a model Cichla temensis, an iconic non-migratory fish from the Amazon, abundant in this ecosystem. We collected double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing data and extracted single nucleotide polymorphisms, which we identified at neutral and adaptive loci, for subsequent analyses. The results showed that the connectivity of the population was affected historically by natural physical barriers, before the construction of the hydroelectric dam, recognizing two independent population units. We detected that the hydroelectric dam increased the differentiation between populations and affected the genetic diversity and effective population sizes, in addition to promoting a recent population expansion upstream of the dam, as a consequence of adaptation to the new environment. Abstract

Low-mass white dwarfs (LMWDs) are believed to be exclusive products of binary evolution, as the Universe is not yet old enough to produce them from single stars. Because of the strong tidal forces operating during the binary interaction phase, the remnant host systems observed today are expected to have negligible eccentricities. Here, we report on the first unambiguous identification of a LMWD in an eccentric (e=0.13) orbit with a millisecond pulsar, which directly contradicts this picture. We use our spectra and radio-timing solution (derived elsewhere) to infer the WD temperature T_eff = 8600 +/- 190 K) and 3D systemic velocity (179.5 km\s). We also place model-independent constraints on the WD radius (R_WD = 0.024+/- 0.004/0.002 R_sun) and surface gravity (log g = 7.11 +/- 0.08/0.16 dex). The WD and kinematic properties are consistent with the expectations for low-mass X-ray binary evolution and disfavour a three-body formation channel. In the case of the high eccentricity being the result of a spontaneous phase transition, we infer a mass of 1.6 M_sun for the progenitor of the pulsar, which is too low for the quark-nova mechanism proposed by Jiang et al. (2015). Similarly, the scenario of Freire & Tauris (2014), in which a WD collapses onto a neutron star via an rotationally-delayed accretion-induced collapse, requires both a high-mass differentially rotating progenitor and a significant momentum kick at birth under our constraints. Contrarily, we find that eccentricity pumping via interaction with a transient circumbinary disk is consistent with all inferred properties. Finally, we report tentative evidence for pulsations which, if confirmed, would transform the star into an unprecedented laboratory for WD physics and stellar convection., Comment: Matches the version accepted in ApJ

Background: cryopreservation is an important biotechnological tool in the conservation of biodiversity, particularly for endangered species. Objective: to evaluate six different spermatozoa/oocyte ratios using fresh and cryopreserved semen in bocachico fish (Prochilodus magdalenae). Methods: fresh semen was collected and its quality determined to verify cryopreservation feasibility. The semen was put in 5 mL straws and mixed with a solution (5.5% glucose, 12% egg yolk, and 10% dimethyl sulfoxide -DMSO-) in a 1:4 dilution (semen:solution). The semen was frozen in nitrogen vapor dry shipper for 30 min, rapidly transferred to storage thermos, and submerged directly into liquid nitrogen (LN; -196 °C). Straws were thawed at 60 ºC for 45 seconds. Motility, velocity, and sperm progressivity of fresh and cryopreserved semen were assessed using Sperm Class Analyzer (SCA®) software. Each proportion of spermatozoa/oocyte was assessed with 2 g of eggs (1,630 ± 87 eggs/g) to evaluate fertility (F), hatching (H), and larval survival (LS) rates. Results: the best reproductive performance for fresh semen was obtained inseminating with 160,000 spermatozoa/oocyte (F = 75.0%, H = 67.7%, LS = 32.7%). Similarly, the best reproductive performance for cryopreserved semen was achieved with 320,000 spermatozoa/oocyte (F = 70.0%, H = 48.6%, LS = 19.5%). Conclusion: it is possible to achieve adequate reproductive performance in bocachico fish using cryopreserved sperm (10% DMSO, 5.5% glucose, and 12% egg yolk) at twice the spermatozoa/oocyte ratio used with fresh semen. Objective. To determine the freezing and thawing rates necessary to maintain sperm viability during cryopreservation of Bocachico semen. Materials and methods. Four interactional treatments were implemented between two freezing (rapid and slow) and two thawing (rapid and slow) curves, in a 2x2 factorial as follows: rapid freezing-rapid thawing, rapid freezing-slow thawing, slow freezing-rapid thawing, and slow freezing-slow thawing. The equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) involves a complex of diseases associated with ulceration of the esophageal, stomach and duodenum mucosa of horses. EGUS occurs frequently due to multiple and overlapping risk factors (activity, food management, anti-inflammatory therapies, among others) and anatomo-physiological peculiarities of horses. The combination of therapeutic strategies and management and environmental shifts are important in both the preventive and the curative approach to this syndrome. However, further studies on the epidemiological and clinical aspects of EGUS and low-cost therapeutic alternatives are required., A síndrome de úlcera gástrica equina (EGUS) envolve o complexo de doenças associadas com úlcera da mucosa esofágica, gástrica e duodenal em animais de diferentes faixas etárias. EGUS tem elevada frequência pela natureza multifatorial dos fatores de risco (tipo de trabalho, manejo alimentar, terapias antiinflamatórias, entre outros) e peculiaridades anatomo-fisiológicas destes animais sometidos em excesso nos sistemas de exploração. A combinação de estratégias terapêuticas, de manejo e de adequação de ambiente é de importância nas condutas preventiva e curativa desta síndrome. Porem se requer mais estudos de prevalência e de caraterização dos fatores predisponentes de EGUS, assim como também, mais pesquisas na geração de alternativas terapêuticas de baixo custo., El síndrome de úlcera gástrica equina (EGUS) implica un complejo de enfermedades asociadas con ulceración de la mucosa esofágica, gástrica y duodenal en animales con diferente edad. EGUS es altamente frecuente por la naturaleza multifactorial de los factores de riesgos (tipo de actividad, manejo alimentario, terapias anti-inflamatorias, entre otros) y particularidades anatomo-fisiológicas de estos animales que son sometidos excesivamente en los diferentes sistemas de explotación. La combinación de estrategias terapéuticas, de manejo y de adecuación de ambiente son de importancia en las conductas preventivas y curativas de este síndrome. Sin embargo se requieren más estudios de prevalencia y de caracterización de los factores predisponentes de EGUS; así como también, más investigación para generar alternativas terapéuticas de bajo costo.

38. Ulcerative gastric lesions in Brasileiro de Hipismo horses

Abstract

Background: Background: equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) has a high and variable occurrence in horses of different ages and activity levels. Objective: the aim of this study was to determine the presence and severity of ulcers in Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) horses owned by the military police. Methods: a group of 80 horses (38 males and 42 females, aged between 3.3 and 29.2 years) performing different activities underwent clinical and gastroscopic evaluation. Descriptive statistics for the presence of ulcers and chi-square (X²) analysis with Fisher exact test were conducted to determine a possible association between EGUS and type of activity, sex or age. Results: occurrence of at least one ulcer was detected in 45% of the horses, and most of them (40%) were located in the squamous mucosa of the Margo plicatus. No significant association (p>0.05) was observed between any of the factors evaluated and the presence of EGUS. Conclusion: the BH horses owned by cavalry's military have low incidence of EGUS despite being subjected to stress, which confirms a multifactorial nature of gastric lesions in this subpopulation., Antecedentes: a Síndrome da Ulcera Gástrica Equina (EGUS) apresenta uma ocorrência alta e variável em equinos de diferentes faixas etárias e classes segundo a atividade que desenvolvem. Objetivo: determinar a presença e intensidade das lesões ulcerativas gástricas em cavalos da raça Brasileiro de Hipismo (BH) a serviço da polícia militar. Métodos: um grupo de 80 equinos (38 machos e 42 fêmeas), com idade entre os 3,3 e 29,2 anos, desenvolvendo atividades de adaptação, treinamento, patrulhamento e inativos foram avaliados por exame físico e gastroscópicos. Analise por estatística descritiva para taxas de ocorrências de ulceras e analise de Qui-quadrado (X²) com teste de exato Fisher foram realizados para verificar possível associação entre EGUS, atividade, sexo e idade. Resultados: foi determinada uma ocorrência de úlcera de 45%, sendo a mucosa escamosa (40%) mais comprometida ao longo do Margo plicatus. Entretanto, não houve associação significativa (p>0,05) entre os fatores avaliados e a presença de EGUS. Se realizaron análisis por estadística descriptiva para porcentaje de ocurrencia de úlceras y análisis de Chi-cuadrado (X²) con test exacto de Fisher para verificar posible asociación entre EGUS, actividad, género y edad. Resultados: se determinó una ocurrencia de úlcera del 45%, siendo la mucosa escamosa (40%) la más comprometida en todo el Margo plicatus, sin embargo, no hubo asociación significativa (p>0,05) entre los factores evaluados y la presencia de EGUS. Conclusión: los caballos estudiados presentaron baja incidencia de EGUS a pesar de estar sometidos a situaciones de estrés, confirmando la naturaleza multifactorial de las lesiones gástricas en esta subpoblación de equinos.

Abstract

Background: In view of the long term discussion on the appropriateness of the dengue classification into dengue fever (DF), dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) and dengue shock syndrome (DSS), the World Health Organization (WHO) has outlined in its new global dengue guidelines a revised classification into levels of severity: dengue fever with an intermediary group of "dengue fever with warning sings", and severe dengue. The objective of this paper was to compare the two classification systems regarding applicability in clinical practice and surveillance, as well as user-friendliness and acceptance by health staff. Methods: A mix of quantitative (prospective and retrospective review of medical charts by expert reviewers, formal staff interviews), semi-quantitative (open questions in staff interviews) and qualitative methods (focus group discussions) were used in 18 countries. Quality control of data collected was undertaken by external monitors. Results: The applicability of the DF/DHF/DSS classification was limited, even when strict DHF criteria were not applied (13.7% of dengue cases could not be classified using the DF/DHF/DSS classification by experienced reviewers, compared to only 1.6% with the revised classification). The fact that some severe dengue cases could not be classified in the DF/DHF/DSS system was of particular concern. Both acceptance and perceived user-friendliness of the revised system were high, particularly in relation to triage and case management. The applicability of the revised classification to retrospective data sets (of importance for dengue surveillance) was also favourable. However, the need for training, dissemination and further research on the warning signs was highlighted. The lambda int gene has a high frequency of rare ATA, AGA and AGG codons; two of them (AGA AGG) located at positions 3 and 4 of the int open reading frame (ORF). Escherichia coli pth (rap) cells, which are defective in peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth) activity, are more susceptible to the inhibitory effects of int expression as compared with wild-type cells. Cell growth and Int protein synthesis were enhanced by overexpression of Pth and tRNAArg4 cognate to AGG and AGA but not of tRNAIle2a specific for ATA. The increase of Int protein synthesis also takes place when the rare arginine codons AGA and AGG at positions 3 and 4 are changed to common arginine CGT or lysine AAA codons but not to rare isoleucine ATA codons. In addition, overexpression of int in Pth defective cells provokes accumulation of peptidyl-tRNAArg4 in the soluble fraction. Therefore, cell growth and Int synthesis inhibition may be due to ribosome stalling and premature release of peptidyl-tRNAArg4 from the ribosome at the rare arginine codons of the first tandem, which leads to cell starvation for the specific tRNA.
