13. Is the Smart Mobile Phone Transforming University Educational Reality?

Abstract

Smartphones (SMPs) play a vital role in the lives of young people and in the university classroom. There are few studies of the use of SMPs by university students, and the existing knowledge is inconsistent and lacking consensus. This article shows the validity of a theoretical model of the use of SMPs in higher education, in the context of the theory of uses and gratifications, and the knowledge gained from previous studies on the use of SMPs by adolescents. The results suggest the existence of a specific educational function for the use of SMPs in university classrooms. Despite the emergent nature of this function, the educational use of SMPs in higher education presents potential consolidation as a source of gratification and satisfaction of educational needs. Their inclusion in the everyday activity of university classrooms will require considerable effort to adapt the educational system, and the training of students and teaching staff must be improved in order to reduce possible interference in learning the communicative and expressive play functions of SMPs.

Abstract

Colletotrichum lindemuthianum is the most frequent pathogenic fungus of the common bean Phaseolus vulgaris. This filamentous fungus employs a hemibiotrophic nutrition/infection strategy, which is characteristic of many Colletotrichum species. Due to host–pathogen coevolution, C. lindemuthianum includes pathotypes with a diversity of virulence against differential common bean varieties. In this study, we performed comparative genomic analyses on three pathotypes with different virulence levels and a non-pathogenic pathotype, isolated from different geographical areas in Mexico. Our results revealed large genomes with high transposable element contents that have undergone expansions, generating intraspecific diversity. All the pathotypes exhibited a similar number of clusters of orthologous genes (COGs) and Gene Ontology (GO) terms. TFomes contain families that are typical in fungal genomes; however, they show different contents between pathotypes, mainly in transcription factors with the fungal-specific TF and Zn2Cys6 domains. Peptidase families mainly contain abundant serine peptidases, metallopeptidases, and cysteine peptidases. In the secretomes, the number of genes differed between the pathotypes, with a high percentage of candidate effectors. Both the virulence gene and CAZyme gene content for each pathotype was abundant and diverse, and the latter was enriched in hemicellulolytic enzymes. We provide new insights into the nature of intraspecific diversity among C. lindemuthianum pathotypes and the origin of their ability to rapidly adapt to genetic changes in its host and environmental conditions. Abstract

Background: The aim of this research is to achieve the early detection of facial characteristics in patients diagnosed with neurodevelopmental deficits and obstructive sleep apnoea–hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) through the analysis of the VERT index and Ricketts' cephalometry to minimise the neurocognitive morbidity associated with these disorders. Methods: This clinical study was conducted on 44 patients aged 4 to 15 years. Participants completed an initial questionnaire about sleep disturbances, followed by a polysomnography, a radiographic study, and an oral examination. Results: The maximum variability in the data was obtained in the mandibular plane angle, where we observed that the measurement was higher in patients diagnosed with OSAHS. The relative and normalised indices of facial depth and the mandibular plane showed variations between patients with a clinical picture compatible with OSAHS and the control group without pathology. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that Ricketts' VERT index by itself is unable to provide evidence of a diagnosis compatible with OSAHS in patients with early neurodevelopmental deficits, but, after analysing the results obtained, we observed that for the cephalometric measurements of the mandibular plane angle and facial depth relative to the patient's age, there are sufficiently strong variations for creating a solid method of differential diagnosis, thus preventing complications at the neurocognitive level. The authors also acknowledge the Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology Group (Mechanical Engineering Department, Universidad Pontificia Comillas-ICAI) for the opportunity to perform the ATR–FTIR experiments, The present study deals with the ability of an atmospheric pressure air plasma torch (APPT) treatment to remove lubricant pollutants coming from machining processes on steel surfaces. This effect has been characterized by contact angle measurements, gravimetric analysis and reflection absorption infrared reflectance spectroscopy (RAIR-FTIR). Attending to the initial results of the investigation, further surface analysis has been done by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In order to define the benefits of cleaning for adhesive bonding processes, pull-off tests were performed on all the coupons. STUDY QUESTION Is ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption associated with semen quality parameters?SUMMARY ANSWER Higher UPF consumption was inversely associated with total sperm count, sperm concentration, and total motility in men of reproductive age.WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY The consumption of UPF, which has been rising during the last decades, has been demonstrated to be positively associated with several chronic diseases such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases. However, the scientific evidence on its potential impact on semen quality remains notably limited.STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 200 healthy men (mean age 28.4 +/- 5.5 years) enrolled in the Led-Fertyl (Lifestyle and Environmental Determinants of Seminogram and Other Male Fertility-Related Parameters) study between February 2021 and April 2023.PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS UPF consumption (% of energy from UPF) was estimated according to the NOVA classification system using a validated 143-item semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Total sperm count, sperm concentration, sperm vitality, total motility, progressive motility, and normal sperm forms were set as the main outcomes. Microscopic parameters were analyzed using a phase-contrast microscope and a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) system. Semen samples were collected and tested according to World Health Organization 2010 standards. The relative importance of allochthonous and autochthonous carbon (C) as sources of energy for tropical stream food webs remains an open question. Allochthonous C might be the main energy source for small and shaded forest streams, while autochthonous C is more likely to fuel food webs draining land uses with less dense vegetation. We studied food webs in cloud forest streams draining watersheds with forests, coffee plantations, and pastures. Our goal was to assess the effects of those land uses on the C source and structure of stream food webs. The study took place in tropical montane streams in La Antigua Watershed, in eastern Mexico. We selected three streams per land use and sampled biofilm and leaf litter as the main food resources, and macroinvertebrates and aquatic vertebrates from different trophic guilds. Samples were analyzed for δ13C and δ15N isotopes. Using a Bayesian mixing model, we estimated the proportional assimilation of autochthonous and allochthonous carbon by each guild. We found that consumers were mostly using allochthonous C in all streams, regardless of watershed land use. Our findings indicate that montane cloud forest streams are dominated by allochthony even in watersheds dominated by pastures. Abundant precipitation in this life zone might facilitate the movement of allochthonous C into streams. While food webs of streams from coffee plantations and pastures also rely on allochthonous resources, other impacts do result in important changes in stream functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
