1. Generalization of Cycle Decompositions of Even Dimensional Hypercubes on $d$-Dimensional Toruses

Abstract

We consider cycle decompositions of even, $2an$-dimensional hypercubes $Q_{2an},$ where $a \geq 3$ is odd and $n \geq 1.$ Prior work done by Axenovich, Offner, and Tompkins focused on obtaining the existence of cycle decompositions for even-dimensional hypercubes using long cycles of a given form, leaving out cycles of shorter lengths and, in fact, cycles of even longer lengths than those obtained there, such as $C_{7 \cdot 2^{11}}$ in the case of $Q_{14}.$ In this paper, we provide two novel methods for explicitly constructing cycle decompositions of virtually all possible cycle lengths, using cycles of a given form, on Cartesian products of cycles up to those known by the work of Axenovich, Offner, and Tompkins. In particular, we show that we can explicitly obtain cycle decompositions of even dimensional hypercubes $Q_{2an}$ for all lengths mentioned above while on the same Cartesian product of cycles. With this, the current understanding of cycle decompositions of even dimensional hypercubes is furthered constructively and is featured with some interesting consequences for when $a$ is a positive, even integer. Additionally, progress is made towards obtaining cycle decompositions using the longest admissible cycle lengths with the incorporation of a more explicit starting point from which such decompositions of $Q_{2an}$ can be studied further., Comment: 146 pages, 38 figures, submitted to Discrete Mathematics journal

2. Scanning spin probe based on magnonic vortex quantum cavities

Abstract

Performing nanoscale scanning electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) requires three essential ingredients. First, a static magnetic field together to field gradients to Zeeman split the electronic energy levels with spatial resolution. Second, a radiofrequency (rf) magnetic field capable of inducing spin transitions. Finally, a sensitive detection method to quantify the energy absorbed by spins. This is usually achieved by combining externally applied magnetic fields with inductive coils or cavities, fluorescent defects or scanning probes. Here, we theoretically propose the realization of a EPR scanning sensor merging all three characteristics into a single device: the vortex core stabilized in ferromagnetic thin-film discs. On one hand, the vortex ground state generates a significant static magnetic field and field gradients. On the other hand, the precessional motion of the vortex core around its equilibrium position produces a circularly polarized oscillating magnetic field, which is enough to produce spin transitions. Finally, the spin-magnon coupling broadens the vortex gyrotropic frequency, suggesting a direct measure of the presence of unpaired electrons. Moreover, the vortex core can be displaced by simply using external magnetic fields of a few mT, enabling EPR scanning microscopy with large spatial resolution. Our numerical simulations show that, by using low damping magnets, it is theoretically possible to detect single spins located on the disc's surface. Vortex nanocavities could also attain strong coupling to individual spin molecular qubits, with potential applications to mediate qubit-qubit interactions or to implement qubit readout protocols.

14. Colorectal cancer screening program implementation: biennial adherence and participation patterns

Abstract

Introduction and aim: Adherence to colorectal cancer (CRC) screening is essential for the effectiveness of screening programs. Even though organized screening programs can improve the quality of the process and adherence, there are still challenges to overcome. The aim of the present study, in which we implemented a biennial organized screening program for CRC, was to describe adherence and participation patterns. Materials and methods: A longitudinal, descriptive study was conducted, in which a team of trained patient navigators carried out interventions, with reminders via cellphone communication, to follow a cohort of 301 subjects eligible for CRC screening, utilizing a fecal immunochemical test (FIT). All the follow-up subjects received a FIT kit. Results: A total of 747 cellphone calls were made and divided into three interventions. From the initial cohort, 126 subjects completed their biennial screening process through the FIT, indicating a consistent adherence rate of 41.8% to our program. The participation patterns were: 126 consistent participants (41.8%), 160 inconsistent participants (53.2%), and 15 participants that were never contacted (5%). Conclusions: In conclusion, our study underlines the importance of organized screening programs in the early detection of CRC. The implementation of follow-up interventions, through reminders and the training of patient navigators, can improve adherence, but there is a need for examining new strategies, to overcome barriers to communication via cellphone. De la cohorte inicial, 126 sujetos completaron su proceso de tamizaje bienal mediante FIT, lo que indica una adherencia consistente del 41.8% a nuestro programa. Conclusiones: En conclusión, nuestro estudio resalta la importancia de los programas de tamizaje organizado en la detección temprana del cáncer colorrectal. 17. Habits, Norms and Use of Technologies at Home from a Gender Perspective in Early Childhood

Abstract

The use of technologies at home directly influences how children perceive them for their learning at school. Numerous studies have focused on the different ways in which digital technologies are used at home and in schools. These studies attempt to explain how previous experience and knowledge can be linked to the use of technologies at school, the differences between home and school literacies, or how socio-economic status influences the availability of technology in these socio-educational institutions. All of them show that technology has become part of children's lives. Consequently, the aim of this study was to obtain information about the habits, norms and use of technology by children aged 2-6 years in their homes and the differences between genders. To this end, a validated questionnaire was created. A total of 1016 parents completed the questionnaire. The results show the most used technologies, the time of use and whom they are used with, as well as the rules imposed and their opinion about this use. Likewise, there are significant differences that lead to carry out and discuss proposals for STEAM work in Early Childhood Education classrooms in order to empower students.

Abstract

Laparotomy incisions provide easy and rapid access to the peritoneal cavity in case of emergency surgery. Incisional hernia (IH) is a late manifestation of the failure of abdominal wall closure and represents frequent complication of any abdominal incision: IHs can cause pain and discomfort to the patients but also clinical serious sequelae like bowel obstruction, incarceration, strangulation, and necessity of reoperation. Previous guidelines and indications in the literature consider elective settings and evidence about laparotomy closure in emergency settings is lacking. This paper aims to present the World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES) project called ECLAPTE (Effective Closure of LAParoTomy in Emergency): the final manuscript includes guidelines on the closure of emergency laparotomy.

Abstract

Hydrological models can benefit from soft calibration, a process by which the proper simulation of hydrological variables is proved while or before addressing hard calibration. Soft calibration reduces the probability of obtaining a statistically accurate but unrealistic model. However, it requires soft data, which is often hard to acquire or unavailable. This work presents HydRoVars, an R tool developed to facilitate the estimation of data which can be implemented in a soft calibration procedure. It allows us to estimate two key hydrological indices (the runoff coefficient and baseflow index) and weather-related variables at the catchment scale for one or numerous basins. The runoff coefficient is calculated automatically from precipitation and streamflow datasets. Groundwater contribution is estimated through a semi-automatic process based on a baseflow filter which considers hydrogeological properties. Modellers would benefit from incorporating soft calibration in their calibration procedures, and this tool might help to estimate these relevant hydrological variables in their modelled area. The tool has been tested in 19 subbasins of the Tagus River basin (Spain) located in different geological regions. In the test cases, we demonstrate the usefulness of this tool to improve the model representation and gain an understanding of the catchments' hydrology. Abstract

Abstract Background Due to population aging, healthcare expenditure is projected to increase substantially in developed countries like Spain. However, prior research indicates that health status, not merely age, is a key driver of healthcare costs. This study analyzed data from over 1.25 million residents of Spain's Murcia region to develop a capitation-based healthcare financing model incorporating health status via Adjusted Morbidity Groups (AMGs). The goal was to simulate an equitable area-based healthcare budget allocation reflecting population needs. Methods Using 2017 data on residents' age, sex, AMG designation, and individual healthcare costs, generalized linear models were built to predict healthcare expenditure based on health status indicators. Multiple link functions and distribution families were tested, with model selection guided by information criteria, residual analysis, and goodness-of-fit statistics. The selected model was used to estimate adjusted populations and simulate capitated budgets for the 9 healthcare districts in Murcia. Results The gamma distribution with logarithmic link function provided the best model fit. Comparisons of predicted and actual average costs revealed underfunded and overfunded areas within Murcia. If implemented, the capitation model would decrease funding for most districts (up to 15.5%) while increasing it for two high-need areas, emphasizing allocation based on health status and standardized utilization rather than historical spending alone. Conclusions AMG-based capitated budgeting could improve equity in healthcare financing across regions in Spain. By explicitly incorporating multimorbidity burden into allocation formulas, resources can be reallocated towards areas with poorer overall population health. Further policy analysis and adjustment is needed before full-scale implementation of such need-based global budgets.

Abstract

Abstract Background Klebsiella aerogenes has been reclassified from Enterobacter to Klebsiella genus due to its phenotypic and genotypic similarities with Klebsiella pneumoniae. It is unclear if clinical outcomes are also more similar. This study aims to assess clinical outcomes of bloodstreams infections (BSI) caused by K. aerogenes, K. pneumoniae and Enterobacter cloacae, through secondary data analysis, nested in PRO-BAC cohort study. Methods Hospitalized patients between October 2016 and March 2017 with monomicrobial BSI due to K. aerogenes, K. pneumoniae or E. cloacae were included. Primary outcome was a composite clinical outcome including all-cause mortality or recurrence until 30 days follow-up. Secondary outcomes were fever ≥ 72 h, persistent bacteraemia, and secondary device infection. Multilevel mixed-effect Poisson regression was used to estimate the association between microorganisms and outcome. Results Overall, 29 K. aerogenes, 77 E. cloacae and 337 K. pneumoniae BSI episodes were included. Mortality or recurrence was less frequent in K. aerogenes (6.9%) than in E. cloacae (20.8%) or K. pneumoniae (19.0%), but statistical difference was not observed (rate ratio (RR) 0.35, 95% CI 0.08 to 1.55; RR 0.42, 95% CI 0.10 to 1.71, respectively). Fever ≥ 72 h and device infection were more common in K. aerogenes group. In the multivariate analysis, adjusted for confounders (age, sex, BSI source, hospital ward, Charlson score and active antibiotic therapy), the estimates and direction of effect were similar to crude results. Conclusions Results suggest that BSI caused by K. aerogenes may have a better prognosis than E. cloacae or K. pneumoniae BSI.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

Abstract Polylactic acid (PLA) is a bioresorbable and biodegradable polymer extensively used in various biomedical and engineering applications. In this study, we investigated the mass loss and thermal properties of PLA-multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites under simulated physiological conditions. The composites were prepared by melting PLA with 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 5.0 wt% MWCNTs using an ultrasonic agitator, and FTIR analysis confirmed composite formation. Subsequently, the composites were subjected to hydrolysis under simulated physiological conditions (pH 7.4 and 37 °C) for up to 60 days. The results revealed that the mass loss of the composites decreased with increasing MWCNT content, suggesting that the presence of MWCNTs decelerated the hydrolysis process. On day 58, the mass loss of pure PLA was 12.5%, decreasing to 8.34% with 0.1% MWCNT, 5.94% with 0.5% MWCNT, 4.59% with 1% MWCNT, and 3.54% with 5.0% MWCNT. This study offers valuable insights into the behavior of PLA-MWCNT composites under physiologically simulated conditions, facilitating the development of new polymer composites with enhanced thermal stability and degradation resistance for biomedical applications.

Abstract

The time-consuming nature of many sample treatment protocols continues to be recognized as the main bottleneck of analytical procedures, which, in most cases, use long analysis times, excessive amounts of solvents and reagents, and energy. However, the increased awareness of the need for environmental protection and the development of Green Analytical Chemistry (GAC) has led to significant advancements in the field of sample treatment. Today, advances in the miniaturization of sample treatment techniques, the development of sorbents with tunable properties, and greener alternatives (for example from waste valorization) are gaining interest in the analysis of psychoactive compounds. Indeed, techniques offering rapid sample preparation, minimal use of solvents, reagents, and energy, and a significant reduction of waste generation are chosen by the scientific community. In recent years, non-toxic extraction media, such as ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents have emerged as alternatives to petroleum-based solvent extractions. Similarly, sorbent-based techniques have benefited from engineered materials and nanotechnology, incorporating novel sorbents with optimized physicochemical properties to enhance extraction efficiency and selectivity. To meet sustainability standards, GAC provides a wealth of information in the field of green awareness, and the application of green metrics has been extended into the literature in the past decade. These tools serve as guides and encourage scientists to develop the most appropriate methodologies that focus on both analytical performance and sustainability, using different concepts and criteria. This article collects and discusses examples of different sample preparation techniques applied to drug analysis, highlighting their strategies for greening the processes and their evaluation using tools such as HEXAGON, Analytical greenness metric for sample preparation (AGREEprep), and Sample preparation metric of sustainability (SPMS) tools.

Abstract

Objectives: The early initiation of the empirical antibiotic treatment and its impact on mortality in patients with bacteraemia has been extensively studied. However, information on the impact of precocity of the targeted antibiotic treatment is scarce. We aimed to study the impact of further delay in active antibiotic therapy on 30-day mortality among patients with bloodstream infection who had not received appropriate empirical therapy. Design: We worked with PROBAC cohort (prospective and compound by patients from 26 different Spanish hospitals). We selected a total of 1703 patients, who survived to day 2 without having received any active antibiotic therapy against the causative pathogen. Results: The 30-day mortality was 14% (238 patients). The adjusted odds of mortality increased for every day of delay, from 1.53 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.13-2.08) for day 3 or after to 11.38 (95% CI 7.95-16.38) for day 6 or after. Conclusion: We concluded that among patients who had not received active treatment within the first 2 days of blood culture collection, additional delays in active targeted therapy were associated with increased mortality. These results emphasize the importance of active interventions in the management of patients with bloodstream infections.

Abstract

El impacto social se define como el conjunto de cambios positivos en la vida de las personas asociados a problemas sociales, que son el efecto real de las intervenciones llevadas a cabo por la empresa. A pesar de la dificultad en su medición, las empresas híbridas lo consideran como un aspecto fundamental en la búsqueda por generar beneficios tanto sociales como económicos. La presente investigación tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión académica y clasificación de métodos cuantitativos relevantes para medir el impacto social generado por las empresas híbridas hacia su entorno. Se llevó a cabo a través de una revisión sistemática de la literatura en las bases de datos Scopus y Web of Science, complementada con un análisis de contenido web pertinente. Como resultado, se identificaron y clasificaron los 18 métodos más significativos de la actualidad. Se concluye que el impacto social es construido cognitivamente por cada actor individual, y a través de una negociación entre las partes interesadas, se llega a un acuerdo del significado dentro de su entorno. Por tanto, cada empresa puede conceptualizar la medición del impacto social de manera única, reflejando las particularidades y objetivos específicos de su actividad.
