BackgroundHeat can vary spatially within an urban area. Individual-level heat exposure may thus depend on an individual's day-to-day travel patterns (also called mobility patterns or activity space), yet heat exposure is commonly measured based on place of residence.ObjectiveIn this study, we compared measures assessing exposure to two heat indicators using place of residence with those defined considering participants' day-to-day mobility patterns.MethodsParticipants (n = 599; aged 35-80 years old [mean =59 years]) from San Diego County, California wore a GPS device to measure their day-to-day travel over 14-day intervals between 2014-10-17 and 2017-10-06. We measured exposure to two heat indicators (land-surface temperature [LST] and air temperature) using an approach considering their mobility patterns and an approach considering only their place of residence. We compared participant mean and maximum exposure values from each method for each indicator.ResultsThe overall mobility-based mean LST exposure (34.7 °C) was almost equivalent to the corresponding residence-based mean (34.8 °C; mean difference in means = -0.09 °C). Similarly, the mean difference between the overall mobility-based mean air temperature exposure (19.2 °C) and the corresponding residence-based mean (19.2 °C) was negligible (-0.02 °C). Meaningful differences emerged, however, when comparing maximums, particularly for LST. The mean mobility-based maximum LST was 40.3 °C compared with a mean residence-based maximum of 35.8 °C, a difference of 4.51 °C. The difference in maximums was considerably smaller for air temperature (mean = 0.40 °C; SD = 1.41 °C) but nevertheless greater than the corresponding difference in means.ImpactAs the climate warms, assessment of heat exposure both at and away from home is important for understanding its health impacts. We compared two approaches to estimate exposure to two heat measures (land surface temperature and air temperature). The first approach only considered exposure at home, and the second considered day-to-day travel. Considering the average exposure estimated by each approach, the results were almost identical. Considering the maximum exposure experienced (specific definition in text), the differences between the two approaches were more considerable, especially for land surface temperature.

Trypanosoma vivax displays distinct mitochondrial genomes: intact in Africa and degraded in South America. This finding, formerly reported from four isolates, suggested an association between mitochondrial mutations and adaptation to exclusive mechanical transmission outside Africa, circumventing mitochondrial activity essential for cyclical transmission by tsetse flies. Here, we characterized the mitochondrial ND7 and COIII genes in 25 South American isolates of T. vivax from livestock from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela, as well as in 11 African isolates from Mozambique, Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria, and Burkina Faso from tsetse flies, antelopes, and cattle. Phylogenetic inference supported the lineages TVV (Trypanosoma vivax vivax) and TVL (Trypanosoma vivax-like), predominant in South America/West Africa and East Africa, respectively. Both ND7 and COIII genes were intact in all African TVV and TVL isolates and, for the first time, in 10 South American isolates from Brazil. Remaining South American isolates exhibited some degree of gene erosion, including ~142 bp deletion at the 3′ end of ND7 disclosed in Venezuela and Colombia, ~163 bp deletion at the 3′ end of ND7 in Brazil and Argentina, and ~750 bp deletion from the 5′ end of ND7 to the 3′ end of COIII in Venezuela. Comprehensive analyses of whole mitochondrial genomes from additional South American and African isolates are crucial for formulating reliable hypotheses regarding the origin, absence, and rapid mitochondrial degradation observed in South American T. vivax.

Reading official letters and being able to react to them appropriately is part of the daily life of every adult in many countries. Although the history of the plain language movement dates to the past century, it is only now that efforts are being made in Poland to adapt official documents to their audience. In this paper, we describe the results of a study (N = 685) in which we examined how particular linguistic forms and text structure affect the reception of an official-looking text – comprehension as well as emotions experienced, trust in the office, feelings of helplessness in the situation of reading the writing, and many other variables. Based on Imbir’s (2016, New Ideas in Psychology, 43, 39–49), two-system theory of emotions, we aim to examine how emotions – triggered by these complex stimuli – affect their processing. We hope that the results of our interdisciplinary research will answer the questions and hypotheses posed by researchers and find application in the reforms currently underway. We believe that by linking findings from cognitive psychology, the psychology of emotions and linguistics, we will also expand knowledge in the broad discussion on overcoming barriers between administrative offices and target audiences.

Abstract The CARLO (cold ablation robot-guided laser osteotome) is a compact device with integrated multiple sensory, steering and safety checking elements. A multi-center study was performed to evaluate the CARLO device for the linear part of midface osteotomy in 28 patients. Feasibility, success rate, safety, performance and experience of the surgeons were assessed and evaluated. All 28 procedures were completed with CARLO without falling back to the conventional methods, giving a technical success rate of 100%. For 27 (96%) cases, procedural success was achieved with cutting lines deviation less than 2 mm. For 25 procedures, the CARLO-cutting was conducted smoothly. In the other 3 cases, some minor difficulties related to the reference markers were reported. For 18 procedures, no change for the cutting path was necessary. For the other 10 cases, cut path was adapted. Intraoperative re-planning was possible, easy and quick without significant delay of the procedures. No CARLO-related adverse events were recorded. Especially, there was no unexpected and unusual bleeding during the CARLO-conducted osteotomy. The time needed for the registration ranged from 1 to 12 min (median = 4). The CARLO-cutting lasted for 5 to 21 min (median = 7). The present study demonstrated feasibility, simplicity, safety, reliability and accuracy of CARLO for the linear part of midface osteotomy.

Abstract Heart failure is a highly prevalent disease, which courses with frequent readmissions, mainly by Acute Heart Failure (AHF). Reduced renal function is associated with increased mortality in patients with HF. Therefore, an accurate and precise evaluation of renal function in patients with HF is crucial. The error of estimated GFR (eGFR) is wide and common, showing a ± 30% variability compared to measured GFR (mGFR). However, there is no evidence on the error of formulas in reflecting real renal function and particularly the consequences of this error in patients with AHF. This is a prospective study comparing the impact of mGFR versus eGFR in the onset of cardiovascular (CV) outcomes in patients with AHF. This was tested with cox survival analysis. Measured GFR was determined by the plasma clearance of iohexol-dbs and eGFR by Cockroft-Gould, MDRD, CKD-EPI creatinine, CKD-EPI cystatin-C and CKD-EPI creatinine + cystatin-C equations formulas. Also the agreement between mGFR and eGFR was analyzed. A total of 90 patients were included. Average age was 66 (± 12 years) and 52 (58%) were male. Of them 53 patients (59%) had a cardiovascular event during follow-up, 22 fatal (41%). The agreement between mGFR and eGFR indicated moderate precision and accuracy (concordance correlation coefficient of 0.77; CI = 0.73–0.82). In multiple cox survival analysis, mGFR was significantly associated with cardiovascular events together with NTproBNP, BMI, LVEF and previous coronary artery disease (p = 0.037; HR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.95–0.99). Estimated GFR by formulas was not significant. In patients with AHF the error of formulas is large, frequent and random, also, mGFR and not eGFR predicted future CV events. The error of eGFR may have clinical consequences in specific subpopulations.

There has been a rapid expansion in the quantity and complexity of data, information and knowledge created in the behavioural and social sciences, yet the field is not advancing understanding, practice or policy to the extent that the insights warrant. One challenge is that research often progresses in disciplinary silos and is reported using inconsistent and ambiguous terminology. This makes it difficult to integrate and aggregate findings to produce cumulative bodies of knowledge that can be translated to applied settings. Ontologies can address these challenges; their development and use have the potential to accelerate the behavioural and social sciences. Ontologies can facilitate communication through precise specification and dissemination of terms, and enable efficient data integration, sharing, comparison and analysis. The widespread use of ontologies in the biomedical and biological sciences has led to multiple successes. It is time now for the behavioural and social sciences to follow that lead. In recent years, a number of ontologies have been developed within the behavioural and social sciences; however, efforts have tended to be isolated, with limited resources to support developers and those who work (or would like to work) with and use ontologies. There is a need for coordination and exchange to reduce duplication of work and leverage the value of a community to support the interoperability of these ontologies (linking of entities across domains and datasets). We have therefore initiated the Behavioural and Social Sciences Ontology (BSSO) Foundry, a community of practice and online repository for the development, adoption and use of ontologies in the behavioural and social sciences. The BSSO Foundry aligns with and builds upon the model provided by the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology Foundry. We describe this new initiative and how to join and contribute to the community of interoperable ontologies for the behavioural and social sciences.

Background and ObjectiveIn recent years, the consumption of fish products has led to a worrying trend where approximately two-thirds of the total amount of fish is discarded as waste. At the same time, scientific interest in exploring natural collagen sources for cosmetics and dietary supplements has increased. This study explores the potential of valorizing sardine scales (Sardina pilchardus), a by-product of the canning industry, through the extraction of collagen for potential use in dermocosmetic formulations and food supplements.MethodsCollagen from sardine scales was obtained though acid and enzymatic extraction. The collagen extracts were characterized by UV-Vis, FTIR spectroscopy, SDS-PAGE, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The collagen was hydrolysed with papain to small peptides. Subsequently, the biological activities of acid-soluble collagen as well as the collagen peptides in terms of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity were evaluated. Furthermore, the capacity of collagen peptides to permeate the intestinal barrier, simulated with caco-2 cells, was evaluated.ResultsPurified collagen extracts were obtained from sardine scales, with enzymatic extraction method having a yield three times higher than the acid method. The SDS-PAGE analysis confirmed the extraction of type I collagen as well as its hydrolysis into small fragments (25–12 kDa). In terms of biological activities, collagen and collagen peptides have not demonstrated antimicrobial activity. However, regarding antioxidant activity, collagen peptides showed three times more capacity compared to non-hydrolyzed collagen. Meanwhile, in 6 h, about 6.37% of collagen peptides could permeate the intestinal barrier.ConclusionThis work represents a continuous effort to advance our understanding and utilization of Portuguese marine waste resources, with focus on the valorization of sardine co-products for the development of food supplement or cosmetic formulations, contributing to the sustainable evolution of the circular blue economy.

Many viruses block host gene expression to take over the infected cell. This process, termed host shutoff, is thought to promote viral replication by preventing antiviral responses and redirecting cellular resources to viral processes. Several viruses from divergent families accomplish host shutoff through RNA degradation by endoribonucleases. However, viruses also need to ensure expression of their own genes. The influenza A virus endoribonuclease PA-X solves this problem by sparing viral mRNAs and some host RNAs necessary for viral replication. To understand how PA-X distinguishes between RNAs, we characterized PA-X cut sites transcriptome-wide using 5' rapid amplification of complementary DNA ends coupled to high-throughput sequencing. This analysis, along with RNA structure predictions and validation experiments using reporters, shows that PA-Xs from multiple influenza strains preferentially cleave RNAs at GCUG tetramers in hairpin loops. Importantly, GCUG tetramers are enriched in the human but not the influenza transcriptome. Moreover, optimal PA-X cut sites inserted in the influenza A virus genome are quickly selected against during viral replication in cells. This finding suggests that PA-X evolved these cleavage characteristics to preferentially target host over viral mRNAs in a manner reminiscent of cellular self versus non-self discrimination.

Extant research on the gender pay gap suggests that men and women who do the same work for the same employer receive similar pay, so that processes sorting people into jobs are thought to account for the vast majority of the pay gap. Data that can identify women and men who do the same work for the same employer are rare, and research informing this crucial aspect of gender differences in pay is several decades old and from a limited number of countries. Here, using recent linked employer-employee data from 15 countries, we show that the processes sorting people into different jobs account for substantially less of the gender pay differences than was previously believed and that within-job pay differences remain consequential.

Background and Purpose: Radiotherapy for paediatric posterior fossa tumours may cause complications in the brainstem and upper spinal cord due to high doses. With proton therapy (PT) this risk may increase due to higher relative biological effectiveness (RBE) from elevated linear energy transfer (LET). This study assesses variations in LET in the brainstem and spinal cord in proton treatment plans from European centres. Materials and Methods: Ten European PT centres using spot-scanning PT planned two paediatric posterior fossa cases: One overlapping partly with the brainstem and upper spinal cord, prescribed 54 Gy(RBE), and the second wrapping around these organs, prescribed 59.4 Gy(RBE). Dose-averaged LET distributions were assessed in volumes of the brainstem and spinal cord irradiated to over 50 Gy(RBE = 1.1). The maximum hinge angle effect on near-maximum RBE-weighted doses using the Unkelbach RBE model was also investigated. Results: In the first case, the mean LET in brainstem volumes receiving more than 50 Gy(RBE = 1.1) ranged from 2.8 keV/µm to 3.6 keV/µm across centres (median: 3.3 keV/µm). In the second case, treatment plans showed a narrower range of mean LET in the brainstem, from 2.5 keV/µm to 2.8 keV/µm (median: 2.7 keV/µm). There was no statistically significant impact of the maximum hinge angle. Conclusions: LET distributions vary across centres due to different techniques but are also influenced significantly by factors like shape and position of the target volume.

Background: Some cancer survivors experience difficulties with concentration, attention, and memory; however, there are no studies on neurodevelopment in patients under 5 years of age who are undergoing cancer treatment. Our aim was to evaluate neurodevelopment in cancer patients under 5 years of age using the Early Development Instrument (EDI) test, considering factors such as nutritional status, type of cancer, and treatment effect. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2018 to March 2019. Patients with cancer diagnoses outside the central nervous system in any phase of cancer treatment were included. Results: A total of 45 patients were included. Regarding fine motor skills, 28% of patients with retinoblastoma and 23% of patients with leukemia or lymphoma had a risk of developmental delay compared to 0% of patients with solid tumors (p = 0.025). The final results showed that 19 (42.2%) patients had normal neurodevelopment (gray), 7 (15.5%) had a delay in neurodevelopment (light gray), and 19 (42.2%) had a risk of developmental delay (black). Regarding developmental delay, 52% of patients in the leukemia and lymphoma group, 71% in the retinoblastoma group, and 23% in the solid tumor group presented developmental delay (p = 0.06). Conclusions: The risk of delay and lag in neurodevelopment is common in cancer patients under 5 years of age undergoing treatment. However, more studies are required to evaluate the effect of treatment on this group of patients as it may be affected by various factors.

Accumulating evidence links cardiometabolic health with social and environmental neighborhood exposures, which may contribute to health inequities. We examined whether environmental characteristics were individually or jointly associated with insulin resistance, hypertension, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome in San Diego County, CA. As part of the Community of Mine Study, cardiometabolic outcomes of insulin resistance, hypertension, BMI, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome were collected in 570 participants. Seven census tract level characteristics of participants' residential environment were assessed and grouped as follows: economic, education, health care access, neighborhood conditions, social environment, transportation, and clean environment. Generalized estimating equation models were performed, to take into account the clustered nature of the data and to estimate β or relative risk (RR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) between each of the seven environmental characteristics and cardiometabolic outcomes. Quantile g-computation was used to examine the association between the joint effect of a simultaneous increase in all environmental characteristics and cardiometabolic outcomes. Among 570 participants (mean age 58.8 ± 11 years), environmental economic, educational and health characteristics were individually associated with insulin resistance, diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome. In the mixture analyses, a joint quartile increase in all environmental characteristics (i.e., improvement) was associated with decreasing insulin resistance (β, 95 %CI: -0.09, -0.18-0.01)), risk of diabetes (RR, 95 %CI: 0.59, 0.36-0.98) and obesity (RR, 95 %CI: 0.81, 0.64-1.02). Environmental characteristics synergistically contribute to cardiometabolic health and independent analysis of these determinants may not fully capture the potential health impact of social and environmental determinants of health.

Oncolytic viruses (OVs) are biological therapeutic agents that selectively destroy cancer cells while sparing normal healthy cells. Besides direct oncolysis, OV infection induces a proinflammatory shift in the tumor microenvironment and the release of tumor‐associated antigens (TAAs) that might induce an anti‐tumor immunity. Due to their immunostimulatory effect, OVs have been explored for cancer vaccination against specific TAAs. However, this approach usually requires genetic modification of the virus and the production of a new viral vector for each target, which is difficult to implement for low prevalent antigens. In a recent study, Chiaro et al. presented an elegant proof of concept on how to implement the PeptiCRAd vaccination platform to overcome this limitation for the treatment of mesothelioma. Authors showed the feasibility of identifying immunogenic TAAs in human mesothelioma and using them to coat oncolytic adenovirus particles. The result was a customized virus‐based cancer vaccine that circumvents time and resource‐consuming steps incurred from genetically engineering viruses. Although some questions remain to be addressed, this interesting approach suggests novel strategies for personalized cancer medicine using oncolytic virotherapy.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between oral hygiene (OH) efficiency and manual dexterity skills in Spanish five-year-old children using two fine motor tests. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a pre–post evaluation was designed. The children’s OH was measured according to the Silness and Löe plaque index (PI) before toothbrushing upon arrival at school (pre) and after supervised toothbrushing (post). Motor skills (children’s dexterity) were determined with the Visual Motor Skills and Resistance to Fatigue test (VMSRF test) and the scale for the Behavioural Assessment of Preschool Skills (BAPS scale). Data were analysed with the SPSS® statistics software with a 95% confidence interval and bilateral significance. Results: One hundred and twenty-nine children were evaluated. The mean PI was 2.5, indicating generally poor OH in the sample. No difference in OH was observed between genders or in the brushing frequency categories. No significant differences in OH or the PI were found between right- and left-handed children either (p > 0.05). Significant differences were found between the OH category pre and post toothbrushing in the total sample, as well as in the various sextants and surfaces evaluated. The results of the VMSRF and BAPS tests indicate moderate visuomotor skills and fatigue resistance and a poor average skill level. A statistically significant improvement in the PI was found in children with higher scores in the VMSRF and BAPS tests. Conclusions: A significantly higher OH efficacy was found in children with better motor skills, although five-year-old children showed moderate visuomotor skills and fatigue resistance and a poor average preschool skill level.

IntroductionThis study examines the associations of neighborhood environments with BMI, HbA1c, and diabetes across 6 years in Hispanic/Latino adults.MethodsParticipants from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos San Diego site (n=3,851, mean age=39.4 years, 53.3% women, 94.0% Mexican heritage) underwent assessment of metabolic risk factors and diabetes status (categorized as normoglycemia, prediabetes, and diabetes) at baseline (2008-2011) and approximately 6 years later (2014-2017). In the Study of Latinos Community and Surrounding Areas Study ancillary study (2015-2020), participant baseline addresses were geocoded, and neighborhoods were defined using 800-meter circular buffers. Neighborhood variables representing socioeconomic deprivation, residential stability, social disorder, walkability, and greenness were created using Census and other public databases.
