This collection explores the notion of reframing as a framework for better understanding the multi-agent and multi-level nature of the translation process, generating new conversations in current debates on translational agency, authority, and power. The volume puts forward reframing as an alternative metaphor to traditional conceptualizations and descriptions of translation, which often position the process in such terms as transformation, reproduction, transposition, and transfer. Chapters in the book reflect on the translator figure as a central agent in actively moving a translated text to a new context, and the translation process as shaped by different forces and subjectivities when translational agency comes into play. The book brings together cross-disciplinary perspectives for viewing translation through the lens of agents, drawing on a wide range of examples across geographic settings, historical eras, and language pairs. The volume integrates analyses from the translated texts themselves as well as their paratexts to offer unique insights into the different layers of mediation in translation and the new frame(s) created for those texts. This book will be of interest to scholars in translation studies, comparative studies, reception studies, and cultural studies.

By intersecting the fields of Iberian studies and translation studies, this edited collection seeks a better understanding of the complex intracultural transfers that shape the Iberian space. On the occasion of the second International Poetry Festival of Las Palmas (Gran Canaria, 1998), the Portuguese poet Alberto Estima de Oliveira (1934–2008) published a booklet titled Otoño en Pequín, whose Spanish poems were later published in Portuguese in Mesopotâmia – espaço que criei (2003). The Portuguese version bears no peritextual reference to the former Spanish booklet, which does not mention any act of translation either; the two sets of poems do, however, bear close textual affinities that make it easy to establish a translational link between them. In 1996 the poet had participated in the first of these Festivals representing Macau, with poems that were published in a Portuguese–English bilingual booklet, Fly. Based on the peritextual differences between Fly and Otoño en Pequín, the chapter argues that the choice of Spanish as the language of publication underlies the assumption that Portuguese and Spanish partake in the same cultural contact zone: the Iberian literary system. Following a genetic approach, the chapter discusses whether the fact of Otoño en Pequín partaking in the Iberian literary system has determined the de facto invisibility of both translator and translation.

Science and technology (S&T) visuals seem remarkably alike across cultures globally. Yet, individual and cultural experiences of scientists and engineers vary before they master the tools and techniques of their disciplines, and different parts of the world have different understandings of S&T. This disparity led us to conduct a pilot study with five S&T students at New Mexico Tech. We concluded that S&T visuals vary across cultures, the variations between designs comprise a spectrum of visual-textual and textual-visual correlations, and the similarities and differences between the visuals are caused by diverse individual and contextual factors.

The history of translation is a site of memory that gathers testimonies of various kinds, from texts to images, from translated literature to statements reflecting on translation praxis. In Portugal, the existing anthologies of comments on translation into Portuguese are heavily dependent on a Eurocentric view of Portuguese literary and translation history, and rather neglect or elide the discourses of those who translate(d) lesser known literatures, particularly those written in non-Western languages, as is the case of Chinese and Japanese. The present article conceptualizes a project that seeks to put together a collection of meta-discourses by translation agents working with languages and textual traditions other than Western. The aim of such a project is to delocalize Portugal’s history of translation by offering a corpus that testifies to the long-term cultural transfers between two geographical extremes: the Far East, which here refers exclusively to China and Japan, and the Far West, which is where I position Portugal from the viewpoint of the Far East. This anthology of texts about a Far Eastern geocultural periphery in translation would be an important bibliographical source for historical research necessary to (re)think, (re)write, and (re)map the Portuguese tradition of translation. The kinds of text to be anthologized are illustrated on the basis of a case study: the preface by the Portuguese symbolist poet Camilo Pessanha (1867–1926) to his direct translation from Chinese into Portuguese of eight elegies from the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644), which was published in Macau in 1914. The article is thus divided into three parts: the first part provides an historical overview of the translation flows between the Far West and the Far East; the second part sketches the structure of a representative anthology of voices translating from East Asian languages; and the third part analyses Pessanha’s statements on his poetry translations and literariness of Chinese language.

This essay is a work in progress on the transatlantic circulation and dialogue of texts, authors and ideas that fuel literary orientalism in Portuguese language. It focuses specifically on the interrelated movements underlying a nineteenth-century collection of classical Chinese poetry in French translation, i.e. Judith Gautier’s Le Livre de jade (1867), and its translations into Portuguese: Machado de Assis’ “Lyra chineza” as included in Phalenas (1870) and Antonio Feijo’s Cancioneiro chinez (1890, 1903). The main purpose is thus to draw a map of cultural and personal contacts and translation transfers that may help better understand the phenomenon of literary orientalism and exoticism in Portuguese language as an intricate network of texts, authors and aesthetic tendencies.

A literatura pós-colonial é muitas vezes pensada como uma forma de tradução cultural, como um lugar privilegiado a partir do qual se pode reescrever a história e retroactivamente reflectir sobre a experiência colonial. Tomando como ponto de partida esta noção de tradução cultural, o presente ensaio procura analisar as obras Une Tempête (1969), de Aimé Césaire, e Foe (1986), de J. M. Coetzee, no que diz respeito à re-escrita das personagens Caliban e Friday, respectivamente. Ambas as figuras serão comparadas e contrastadas relativamente ao uso particular que fazem da língua enquanto instrumento de poder, subversão e rejeição do domínio europeu. Based on this notion of cultural translation, the article seeks to examine, respectively, Aimé Césaire’s Une Tempête (1969) and J. M. Coetzee’s Foe (1986) as regards the “written-back” characters Caliban and Friday. Both characters will be compared and contrasted concerning their peculiar use of language as an instrument of power, subversion, and rejection of the European ruling. Enquanto experiencia e estimulo sensoriais, o olhar institui-se como instância mediadora entre o sujeito e a realidade circundante. A apreensao do mundo exterior atraves do olhar e do inerente movimento de flânerie e um elemento fulcral nao so na obra poetica de Cesario Verde como tambem no orientalismo de Wenceslau de Moraes. Neste ensaio, propomonos analisar a pertinencia da estetica do olhar na producao literaria destes dois flâneurs lusofonos que, embora inseridos em espacos geoculturais distantes e se servindo dos mesmos processos visuais para a fruicao estetica dessas esferas culturais, manipulam habilmente o codigo visual enquanto instrumento epistemologico e ferramenta etnografica. //

Over the last decades, embodiment theories have been mainly developed in the cognitive sciences as well as in various cultural sciences, in philosophy, psychology and linguistics. The concept of ‘embodiment’ refers to the notion of a specific relation between the system of human cognition and the human body. Central is the claim that human cognition forms a functional unit together with the entire human body in such a way that the human ability for thinking is tightly connected to the cognition’s embedment in a human body ─ a human body which itself is embedded in an environment. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the notion of embodiment has also had an impact in the field of Translation Studies, in particular among primarily cognitive oriented translation process researchers. The paper aims to affirm the necessity of rethinking translation in terms of embodiment, and in this context, we argue that also Genetic Translation Studies can help to strengthen a foundation to this idea. The crucial link of evidence is provided by the fact that recently, more and more translators started to produce texts in which they reflect upon the identity of translators by describing themselves, their idea of translation and their translation practices. The individual experience and the concept of body – with its dimensions of perception, senses, movement and emotion – play a central role in such translator’s self-representations.
