Search

Propagation effects in the interstellar medium and intrinsic profile changes can cause variability in the timing of pulsars, which limits the accuracy of fundamental science done via pulsar timing. One of the best timing pulsars, PSR J1713+0747, has gone through two ‘dip’ events in its dispersion measure (DM) time series. If these events reflect real changes in electron column density, they should lead to multiple imaging. We show that the events are well fitted by an underdense corrugated sheet model, and look for associated variability in the pulse profile using principal component analysis. We find that there are transient pulse profile variations, but they vary in concert with the DM, unlike what is expected from lensing due to a corrugated sheet. The change is consistent in shape across profiles from both the Green Bank and Arecibo radio observatories, and its amplitude appears to be achromatic across the 820-MHz, 1.4-GHz, and 2.3-GHz bands, again unlike expected from interference between lensed images. This result is puzzling. We note that some of the predicted lensing effects would need higher time and frequency resolution data than used in this analysis. Future events appear likely, and storing baseband data or keeping multiple time–frequency resolutions will allow more in-depth study of propagation effects and hence improvements to pulsar timing accuracy.

The Crab Pulsar's radio emission is unusual, consisting predominantly of giant pulses, with durations of about a micro-second but structure down to the nano-second level, and brightness temperatures of up to $10^{37}\,$K. It is unclear how giant pulses are produced, but they likely originate near the pulsar's light cylinder, where corotating plasma approaches the speed of light. We report observations in the 400-800 MHz frequency band, where the pulses are broadened by scattering in the surrounding Crab nebula. We find that some pulse frequency spectra show strong bands, which vary during the scattering tail, in one case showing a smooth upward drift. While the banding may simply reflect interference between nano-second scale pulse components, the variation is surprising, as in the scattering tail the only difference is that the source is observed via slightly longer paths, bent by about an arcsecond in the nebula. The corresponding small change in viewing angle could nevertheless reproduce the observed drift by a change in Doppler shift, if the plasma that emitted the giant pulses moved highly relativistically, with a Lorentz factor $\gamma\sim10^4$ (and without much spread in $\gamma$). If so, this would support models that appeal to highly relativistic plasma to transform ambient magnetic structures to coherent GHz radio emission, be it for giant pulses or for potentially related sources, such as fast radio bursts., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We present ULTRACAM multiband optical photometry of two transitional millisecond pulsars, PSR J1023+0038 and PSR J1227$-$4853, taken while both were in their radio pulsar states. The light curves show significant asymmetry about the flux maxima in all observed bands, suggesting an asymmetric source of heating in the system. We model the light curves using the Icarus binary code, using models with an additional "hot spot" heating contribution and an anisotropic heat redistribution model to treat the asymmetry. Our modelling reveals companion stars with under-filled Roche lobes in both PSRs J1023+0038 and J1227$-$4853, with Roche lobe filling factors in the range $f \sim 0.82-0.92$. While the volume-averaged filling factors are closer to unity, significant under-filling is unexpected from tMSPs as they must rapidly over-fill their Roche lobes to start transferring mass, which occurs on timescale of weeks or months. We discuss the motivation and validity of our extensions to the models and the implications of the under-filled Roche lobe, and suggest future work to further investigate the role of the filling factor in the tMSP cycle., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

The parabolic structure of the secondary or conjugate spectra of pulsars is often the result of isolated one-dimensional (or at least highly anisotropic) lenses in the interstellar medium (ISM). The curvature of these features contains information about the velocities of the Earth, ISM, and pulsar along the primary axis of the lens. As a result, measuring variations in the curvature over the course of a year, or the orbital period for pulsars in binaries, can constrain properties of the screen and pulsar. In particular, the pulsar distance and orbital inclination for binary systems can be found for multiple screens or systems with prior information on sin(i). By mapping the conjugate spectra into a space where the main arc and inverted arclets are straight lines, we are able to make use of the full information content from the inverted arclet curvatures, amplitudes, and phases using eigenvectors to uniquely and optimally retrieve phase information. This allows for a higher precision measurement than the standard Hough transform for systems where these features are available. Our technique also directly yields the best-fitting one-dimensional impulse response function for the interstellar lens given in terms of the Doppler shift, time delay, and magnification of images on the sky as seen from a single observatory. This can be extended for use in holographic imaging of the lens by combining multiple telescopes. We present examples of this new method for both simulated data and actual observations of PSR B0834+06.

In regions with strongly varying electron density, radio emission can be magnified significantly by plasma lensing. In the presence of magnetic fields, magnification in time and frequency will be different for two circular polarizations. We show how these effects can be used to measure or constrain the magnetic field parallel to the line of sight, $B_\parallel$, as well as its spatial structure, $\sigma_{B_\parallel}$, in the lensing region. In addition, we discuss how generalized Faraday rotation can constrain the strength of the perpendicular field, $B_\perp$. We attempt to make such measurements for the Black Widow pulsar, PSR~B1957+20, in which plasma lensing was recently discovered. For this system, pressure equilibrium suggests $B\gtrsim 20\,$G at the interface between the pulsar and companion winds, where the radio eclipse starts and ends, and where most lensing occurs. We find no evidence for large-scale magnetic fields, with, on average, $B_\parallel=0.02\pm0.09\,$G over the egress lensing region. Array programming provides a powerful, compact and expressive syntax for accessing, manipulating and operating on data in vectors, matrices and higher-dimensional arrays. NumPy is the primary array programming library for the Python language. It has an essential role in research analysis pipelines in fields as diverse as physics, chemistry, astronomy, geoscience, biology, psychology, materials science, engineering, finance and economics. For example, in astronomy, NumPy was an important part of the software stack used in the discovery of gravitational waves1 and in the first imaging of a black hole2. Here we review how a few fundamental array concepts lead to a simple and powerful programming paradigm for organizing, exploring and analysing scientific data. NumPy is the foundation upon which the scientific Python ecosystem is constructed. It is so pervasive that several projects, targeting audiences with specialized needs, have developed their own NumPy-like interfaces and array objects. Owing to its central position in the ecosystem, NumPy increasingly acts as an interoperability layer between such array computation libraries and, together with its application programming interface (API), provides a flexible framework to support the next decade of scientific and industrial analysis., NumPy is the primary array programming library for Python; here its fundamental concepts are reviewed and its evolution into a flexible interoperability layer between increasingly specialized computational libraries is discussed.

Radio pulsars scintillate because their emission travels through the ionized interstellar medium via multiple paths, which interfere with each other. It has long been realized that the scattering screens responsible for the scintillation could be used as `interstellar lenses' to localize pulsar emission regions. Most scattering screens, however, only marginally resolve emission components, limiting results to statistical inferences and detections of small positional shifts. Since screens situated close to the source have better resolution, it should be easier to resolve emission regions of pulsars located in high density environments such as supernova remnants or binaries in which the pulsar's companion has an ionized outflow. Here, we report events of extreme plasma lensing in the `Black Widow' pulsar, PSR~B1957+20, near the phase in its 9.2 hour orbit in which its emission is eclipsed by its companion's outflow. During the lensing events, the flux is enhanced by factors of up to 70--80 at specific frequencies. The strongest events clearly resolve the emission regions: they affect the narrow main pulse and parts of the wider interpulse differently. We show that the events arise naturally from density fluctuations in the outer regions of the outflow, and infer a resolution of our lenses comparable to the pulsar's radius, about 10\,km. Furthermore, the distinct frequency structures imparted by the lensing are reminiscent of what is observed for the repeating fast radio burst FRB 121102, providing observational support for the idea that this source is observed through, and thus at times strongly magnified by, plasma lenses., Comment: 11 Pages, 7 Figures, Author's version. The Crab pulsar has striking radio emission properties, with the two dominant pulse components -- the main pulse and the interpulse -- consisting entirely of giant pulses. The emission is scattered in both the Crab nebula and the interstellar medium, causing multi-path propagation and thus scintillation. We study the scintillation of the Crab's giant pulses using phased Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope data at 1668\,MHz. We find that giant pulse spectra correlate at only $\sim 2 \%$, much lower than the $1/3$ correlation expected from a randomized signal imparted with the same impulse response function. In addition, we find that the main pulse and the interpulse appear to scintillate differently; the 2D cross-correlation of scintillation between the interpulse and main pulse has a lower amplitude, and is wider in time and frequency delay than the 2D autocorrelation of main pulses. These lines of evidence suggest that the giant pulse emission regions are extended, and that the main pulse and interpulse arise in physically distinct regions which are resolved by the scattering screen. Assuming the scattering takes place in the nebular filaments, the emission regions are of order a light cylinder radius, as projected on the sky. Mode changing is a phenomenon where a pulsar’s emission abruptly changes between two or more quasi-stable modes. We have discovered mode changing in the Black Widow Pulsar (PSR B1957+20), a first detection of mode changing in a millisecond pulsar. On average, a mode change occurs every 1.7 seconds. Multiple components across the pulse profile participate in the mode changing, indicating that this is likely caused by a global change in the pulsar’s magnetosphere.

We analyze the variability in accretion-related emission lines for 40 Classical T Tauri stars to probe the extent of accretion variations in young stellar objects. Our analysis is based on multi-epoch high-resolution spectra for young stars in Tau-Aur and Cha I. For all stars, we obtain typically four spectra, covering timescales from hours to months. As proxies for the accretion rate, we use the H-alpha 10% width and the CaII-8662 line flux. We find that while the two quantities are correlated, their variability amplitude is not. Converted to accretion rates, the CaII fluxes indicate typical accretion rate changes of 0.35 dex, with 32% exceeding 0.5 dex, while H-alpha 10% width suggests changes of 0.65 dex, with 66% exceeding 0.5 dex. We conclude that CaII fluxes are a more robust quantitative indicator of accretion than H-alpha 10% width, and that intrinsic accretion rate changes typically do not exceed 0.5 dex on timescales of days to months. The maximum extent of the variability is reached after a few days, suggesting that rotation is the dominant cause of variability. We see a decline of the inferred accretion rates towards later spectral types, reflecting the dM/dt vs. M relationship. There is a gap between accretors and non-accretors, pointing to a rapid shutdown of accretion. We present a comprehensive study of disks around 81 young low-mass stars and brown dwarfs in the nearby ~2-Myr-old Chamaeleon I star-forming region. We use mid-infrared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope, supplemented by findings from ground-based high-resolution optical spectroscopy and adaptive optics imaging. We derive disk fractions of 52 (+/-6) % and 58 (+6/-7) % based on 8-micron and 24-micron colour excesses, respectively, consistent with those reported for other clusters of similar age. Within the uncertainties, the disk frequency in our sample of K3-M8 objects in Cha I does not depend on stellar mass. Diskless and disk-bearing objects have similar spatial distributions. There are no obvious transition disks in our sample, implying a rapid timescale for the inner disk clearing process; however, we find two objects with weak excess at 3-8 microns and substantial excess at 24 microns, which may indicate grain growth and dust settling in the inner disk. For a sub-sample of 35 objects with high-resolution spectra, we investigate the connection between accretion signatures and dusty disks: in the vast majority of cases (29/35) the two are well correlated, suggesting that, on average, the timescale for gas dissipation is similar to that for clearing the inner dust disk. The exceptions are six objects for which dust disks appear to persist even though accretion has ceased or dropped below measurable levels. We present results of the CFHT adaptive optics search for companions of a homogeneous group of contact binary stars, as a contribution to our attempts to prove a hypothesis that these binaries require a third star to become so close as observed. In addition to companions directly discovered at separations of >=1", we introduced a new method of AO image analysis utilizing distortions of the AO diffraction ring pattern at separations of 0.07"-1". Very close companions, with separations in the latter range were discovered in systems HV Aqr, OO Aql, CK Boo, XY Leo, BE Scl, and RZ Tau. More distant companions were detected in V402 Aur, AO Cam, V2082 Cyg. Our results provide a contribution to the mounting evidence that the presence of close companions is a very common phenomenon for very close binaries with orbital periods

It is unclear how very close binary stars form, given that during the pre-main-sequence phase the component stars would have been inside each other. One hypothesis is that they formed further apart, but were brought in closer after formation by gravitational interaction with a third member of the system. If so, all close binaries should be members of triple (or higher-order) systems. As a test of this prediction, we present a search for the signature of third components in archival spectra of close binaries. In our sample of 75 objects, 23 show evidence for the presence of a third component, down to a detection limit of tertiary flux contributions of about 0.8% at 5200 \AA\ (considering only contact and semi-detached binaries, we find 20 out of 66). In a homogeneous subset of 58 contact binaries, we are fairly confident that the 15 tertiaries we have detected are all tertiaries present with mass ratios $0.28\lesssim M_3/M_{12}\lesssim0.75$ and implied outer periods $P\lesssim10^6{\rm d}$. We find that if the frequency of tertiaries was the same as that of binary companions to solar-type stars, we would have expected to detect about 12 tertiaries. In contrast, if all contact binaries were in triple systems, one would expect about 20. The detection of optical/infrared counterparts to Anomalous X-ray Pulsars (AXPs) has greatly increased our understanding of these systems. Models for the AXP phenomenon were based upon their X-ray emission, and all but the magnetar model made predictions for the optical/infrared that have now been falsified. With detections in hand, detailed studies of the optical/infrared to X-ray flux ratios, variability, and the spectral energy distributions have become possible. We present new data on two AXPs taken with Keck and Magellan, and compare the results with predictions made in the context of the magnetar model, in which the emission is due to ion currents flowing in the >10e14 G magnetosphere of young neutron stars., 4 pages, 2 figures. The Crab pulsar has a striking radio profile, dominated by two pulse components (the main pulse and interpulse) which are comprised of giant pulses. These pulses are randomly occurring, they extend to extremely high flux densities, and are closely aligned with emission across the entire electromagnetic spectrum. The Crab, like many pulsars, exhibits scintillation – a pattern in frequency and time arising from interfering scattered images. The pattern varies with location, with the physical scale over which it changes by order unity corresponding to the spatial resolution of the scattering surface. For the Crab, the scattering is in the nebula and the estimated spatial resolution is of order the light cylinder radius. Comparing scintillation spectra of the two components, we infer a difference in physical location of the same order.

The hierarchical triple system PSR J0337+1715 offers an unprecedented laboratory to study secular evolution of interacting systems and to explore the complicated mass-transfer history that forms millisecond pulsars and helium-core white dwarfs. The latter in particular, however, requires knowledge of the properties of the individual components of the system. Here we present precise optical spectroscopy of the inner companion in the PSR J0337+1715 system. We confirm it as a hot, low-gravity DA white dwarf with Teff=15,800+/-100 K and log(g)=5.82+/-0.05. We also measure an inner mass ratio of 0.1364+/-0.0015, entirely consistent with that inferred from pulsar timing, and a systemic radial velocity of 29.7+/-0.3 km/s. Combined with the mass (0.19751 Msun) determined from pulsar timing, our measurement of the surface gravity implies a radius of 0.091+/-0.005 Rsun; combined further with the effective temperature and extinction, the photometry implies a distance of 1300+/-80 pc. The high temperature of the companion is somewhat puzzling: with current models, it likely requires a recent period of unstable hydrogen burning, and suggests a surprisingly short lifetime for objects at this phase in their evolution. Many physically motivated extensions to general relativity (GR) predict significant deviations in the properties of spacetime surrounding massive neutron stars. We report the measurement of a 2.01 +/- 0.04 solar mass pulsar in a 2.46-hr orbit with a 0.172 +/- 0.003 solar mass white dwarf. The high pulsar mass and the compact orbit make this system a sensitive laboratory of a previously untested strong-field gravity regime. Thus far, the observed orbital decay agrees with GR, supporting its validity even for the extreme conditions present in the system. The resulting constraints on deviations support the use of GR-based templates for ground-based gravitational wave detectors. The merger of two carbon-oxygen white dwarfs can lead either to a spectacular transient, stable nuclear burning or a massive, rapidly rotating white dwarf. Simulations of mergers have shown that the outcome strongly depends on whether the white dwarfs are similar or dissimilar in mass. In the similar-mass case, both white dwarfs merge fully and the remnant is hot throughout, while in the dissimilar case, the more massive, denser white dwarf remains cold and essentially intact, with the disrupted lower mass one wrapped around it in a hot envelope and disk. In order to determine what constitutes "similar in mass" and more generally how the properties of the merger remnant depend on the input masses, we simulated unsynchronized carbon-oxygen white dwarf mergers for a large range of masses using smoothed-particle hydrodynamics. We find that the structure of the merger remnant varies smoothly as a function of the ratio of the central densities of the two white dwarfs. A density ratio of 0.6 approximately separates similar and dissimilar mass mergers. Confirming previous work, we find that the temperatures of most merger remnants are not high enough to immediately ignite carbon fusion. During subsequent viscous evolution, however, the interior will likely be compressed and heated as the disk accretes and the remnant spins down. We find from simple estimates that this evolution can lead to ignition for many remnants. We present optical spectroscopic measurements of the eclipsing high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) XMMU J013236.7+303228 in M 33. Based on spectra taken at multiple epochs of the 1.73 day binary orbital period we determine physical as well as orbital parameters for the donor star. We find the donor to be a B1.5IV subgiant with effective temperature T = 22, 000-23, 000 K. From the luminosity, temperature, and known distance to M 33 we derive a radius of R = 8.9 ± 0.5 R_☉. From the radial-velocity measurements, we determine a velocity semi-amplitude of K_opt = 63 ± 12 km s^(–1). Using the physical properties of the B star determined from the optical spectrum, we estimate the star's mass to be M_opt = 11 ± 1 M_☉. Based on the X-ray spectrum, the compact companion is likely a neutron star, although no pulsations have yet been detected. Using the spectroscopically derived B star mass we find the neutron star companion mass to be M_X = 2.0 ± 0.4 M_☉, consistent with the neutron star mass in the HMXB Vela X-1, but heavier than the canonical value of 1.4 M_☉ found for many millisecond pulsars. We attempt to use as an additional constraint that the B star radius inferred from temperature, flux, and distance should equate to the Roche radius, since the system accretes by Roche lobe overflow. This leads to substantially larger masses, but by trying to apply the technique to known systems, we find that the masses are consistently overestimated. Attempting to account for that in our uncertainties, we derive M_X = 2.2^(+0.8)_(–0.6) M_☉ and M opt = 13 ± 4 M_☉. We conclude that precise constraints require detailed modeling of the shape of the Roche surface.

SDSS 1355+0856 was identified as a hot white dwarf (WD) with a binary companion from time-resolved SDSS spectroscopy as part of the ongoing SWARMS survey. Follow-up observations with the ARC 3.5m telescope and the MMT revealed weak emission lines in the central cores of the Balmer absorption lines during some phases of the orbit, but no line emission during other phases. This can be explained if SDSS 1355+0856 is a detached WD+M dwarf binary similar to GD 448, where one of the hemispheres of the low-mass companion is irradiated by the proximity of the hot white dwarf. Based on the available data, we derive a period of 0.11438 +- 0.00006 days, a primary mass of 0.46 +- 0.01 solar masses, a secondary mass between 0.083 and 0.097 solar masses, and an inclination larger than 57 degrees. This makes SDSS 1355+0856 one of the shortest period post-common envelope WD+M dwarf binaries known, and one of only a few where the primary is likely a He-core white dwarf, which has interesting implications for our understanding of common envelope evolution and the phenomenology of cataclysmic variables. The short cooling time of the WD (25 Myr) implies that the system emerged from the common envelope phase with a period very similar to what we observe today, and was born in the period gap of cataclysmic variables., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables. We present the results of a multiplicity survey of 212 T Tauri stars in the Chamaeleon I and Taurus-Auriga star-forming regions, based on high-resolution spectra from the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope. From these data, we achieved a typical radial velocity precision of ~80 m/s with slower rotators yielding better precision, in general. For 174 of these stars, we obtained multi-epoch data with sufficient time baselines to identify binaries based on radial velocity variations. We identified eight close binaries and four close triples, of which three and two, respectively, are new discoveries. The spectroscopic multiplicity fractions we find for Cha I (7%) and Tau-Aur (6%) are similar to each other, and to the results of field star surveys in the same mass and period regime. However, unlike the results from imaging surveys, the frequency of systems with close companions in our sample is not seen to depend on primary mass. Additionally, we do not find a strong correlation between accretion and close multiplicity. This implies that close companions are not likely the main source of the accretion shut down observed in weak-lined T Tauri stars. Recent studies have shown that for suitable initial conditions both super- and sub-Chandrasekhar mass carbon-oxygen white dwarf mergers produce explosions similar to observed SNe Ia. The question remains, however, how much fine tuning is necessary to produce these conditions. We performed a large set of SPH merger simulations, sweeping the possible parameter space. We find trends for merger remnant properties, and discuss how our results affect the viability of our recently proposed sub-Chandrasekhar merger channel for SNe Ia., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, to appear in IAU 281 Proceedings "Binary Paths to Type Ia Supernovae Explosions"

Among the initial results from Kepler were two striking lightcurves, for KOI 74 and KOI 81, in which the relative depths of the primary and secondary eclipses showed that the more compact, less luminous object was hotter than its stellar host. That result became particularly intriguing because a substellar mass had been derived for the secondary in KOI 74, which would make the high temperature challenging to explain; in KOI 81, the mass range for the companion was also reported to be consistent with a substellar object. We re-analyze the Kepler data and demonstrate that both companions are likely to be white dwarfs. We also find that the photometric data for KOI 74 show a modulation in brightness as the more luminous star orbits, due to Doppler boosting. The magnitude of the effect is sufficiently large that we can use it to infer a radial velocity amplitude accurate to 1 km/s. As far as we are aware, this is the first time a radial-velocity curve has been measured photometrically. Combining our velocity amplitude with the inclination and primary mass derived from the eclipses and primary spectral type, we infer a secondary mass of 0.22+/-0.03 Msun. We report the discovery of 1RXS J173006.4+033813, a polar cataclysmic variable with a period of 120.21 min. The white dwarf primary has a magnetic field of B = 42+6-5 MG, and the secondary is a M3 dwarf. The system shows highly symmetric double peaked photometric modulation in the active state as well as in quiescence. These arise from a combination of cyclotron beaming and ellipsoidal modulation. Giant planets are usually thought to form within a few tens of AU of their host stars, and hence it came as a surprise when we found what appeared to be a planetary mass (~0.008 Msun) companion around the 5 Myr-old solar mass star 1RXS J160929.1-210524 in the Upper Scorpius association. At the time, we took the object's membership in Upper Scorpius -- established from near-infrared, H- and K-band spectroscopy -- and its proximity (2.2", or 330 AU) to the primary as strong evidence for companionship, but could not verify their common proper motion. Here, we present follow-up astrometric measurements that confirm that the companion is indeed co-moving with the primary star, which we interpret as evidence that it is a truly bound planetary mass companion. We also present new J-band spectroscopy and 3.0-3.8 microns photometry of the companion. Based on a comparison with model spectra, these new measurements are consistent with the previous estimate of the companion effective temperature of 1800+/-200 K. We present a new estimate of the companion mass based on evolution models and the calculated bolometric luminosity of the companion; we obtain a value of 0.008 (-0.002/+0.003) Msun, again consistent with our previous result. Finally, we present angular differential imaging observations of the system allowing us to rule out additional planets in the system more massive than 1, 2 and 8 Mjup at projected separations larger than 3" (~440 AU), 0.7" (~100 AU) and 0.35" (~50 AU), respectively. Type Ia supernovae are generally thought to be due to the thermonuclear explosions of carbon-oxygen white dwarfs with masses near the Chandrasekhar mass. This scenario, however, has two long-standing problems. First, the explosions do not naturally produce the correct mix of elements, but have to be finely tuned to proceed from sub-sonic deflagration to super-sonic detonation. Second, population models and observations give formation rates of near-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs that are far too small. Here, we suggest that type Ia supernovae instead result from mergers of roughly equal-mass carbon-oxygen white dwarfs, including those that produce sub-Chandrasekhar mass remnants. Numerical studies of such mergers have shown that the remnants consist of rapidly rotating cores that contain most of the mass and are hottest in the center, surrounded by dense, small disks. We argue that the disks accrete quickly, and that the resulting compressional heating likely leads to central carbon ignition. This ignition occurs at densities for which pure detonations lead to events similar to type Ia supernovae. With this merger scenario, we can understand the type Ia rates, and have plausible reasons for the observed range in luminosity and for the bias of more luminous supernovae towards younger populations. We speculate that explosions of white dwarfs slowly brought to the Chandrasekhar limit---which should also occur---are responsible for some of the "atypical" type Ia supernovae., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. We present a comprehensive study of rotation, disk and accretion signatures for 144 T Tauri stars in the young (~2 Myr old) Chamaeleon I and Taurus-Auriga star forming regions based on multi-epoch high-resolution optical spectra from the Magellan Clay 6.5 m telescope supplemented by mid-infared photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope. In contrast to previous studies in the Orion Nebula Cluster and NGC 2264, we do not see a clear signature of disk braking in Tau-Aur and Cha I. We find that both accretors and non-accretors have similar distributions of v sin i. The rotational velocities in both regions show a clear mass dependence, with F--K stars rotating on average about twice as fast as M stars, consistent with results reported for other clusters of similar age. Similarly, we find the upper envelope of the observed values of specific angular momentum j varies as M^0.5 for our sample which spans a mass range of ~0.16 to ~3 M_sun. This power law complements previous studies in Orion which estimated j is proportional to M^0.25 for < ~2 Myr stars in the same mass regime, and a sharp decline in j with decreasing mass for older stars (~10 Myr) with M < 2 M_sun. For a subsample of 67 objects with mid-IR photometry, we examine the connection between accretion signatures and dusty disks: in the vast majority of cases (63/67), the two properties correlate well, which suggests that the timescale of gas accretion is similar to the lifetime of inner disks., Accepted to ApJ. 10 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. A large fraction of stars are members of binary systems. Yet, the formation and early evolution of binary and multiple stars is not well understood theoretically and poorly constrained observationally. We present findings from a comprehensive spectroscopic survey for close binaries among nearly 200 members of the Chamaeleon I and Taurus‐Auriga star‐forming regions. We find that higher mass stars in our sample have a higher spectroscopic binary frequency than their lower mass counterparts, similar to what is seen in the field and for resolved (wide) binaries in young associations. More intriguingly, our observations also reveal a significantly larger fraction of tight binaries in Tau‐Aur compared to Cha I, both for F‐K stars and for M dwarfs, implying possible regional variations in the formation of multiple stars.

We present Gemini near-infrared adaptive optics imaging and spectroscopy of a planetary mass candidate companion to 1RXS J160929.1-210524, a roughly solar-mass member of the 5 Myr-old Upper Scorpius association. The object, separated by 2.22" or 330 AU at ~150 pc, has infrared colors and spectra suggesting a temperature of 1800(-100/+200) K, and spectral type of L4(-2/+1). The H- and K-band spectra provide clear evidence of low surface gravity, and thus youth. Based on the widely used DUSTY models, we infer a mass of 8(-2/+4)Mjupiter. If gravitationally bound, this would be the lowest mass companion imaged around a normal star thus far, and its existence at such a large separation would pose a serious challenge to theories of star and planet formation., Revised accepted version, ApJL, in press

We estimate cluster ages from lithium depletion in five pre-main-sequence groups found within 100 pc of the Sun: TW Hydrae Association, Eta Chamaeleontis Cluster, Beta Pictoris Moving Group, Tucanae-Horologium Association and AB Doradus Moving Group. We determine surface gravities, effective temperatures and lithium abundances for over 900 spectra through least squares fitting to model-atmosphere spectra. For each group, we compare the dependence of lithium abundance on temperature with isochrones from pre-main-sequence evolutionary tracks to obtain model dependent ages. We find that the Eta Chamaelontis Cluster and the TW Hydrae Association are the youngest, with ages of 12+/-6 Myr and 12+/-8 Myr, respectively, followed by the Beta Pictoris Moving Group at 21+/-9 Myr, the Tucanae-Horologium Association at 27+/-11 Myr, and the AB Doradus Moving Group at an age of at least 45 Myr (where we can only set a lower limit since the models -- unlike real stars -- do not show much lithium depletion beyond this age). Here, the ordering is robust, but the precise ages depend on our choice of both atmospheric and evolutionary models. As a result, while our ages are consistent with estimates based on Hertzsprung-Russell isochrone fitting and dynamical expansion, they are not yet more precise. Our observations do show that with improved models, much stronger constraints should be feasible: the intrinsic uncertainties, as measured from the scatter between measurements from different spectra of the same star, are very low: around 10 K in effective temperature, 0.05 dex in surface gravity, and 0.03 dex in lithium abundance., Accepted to ApJ, 15 pages, 8 colour figures

We present the results of a multiplicity survey of 126 stars spanning ~0.1-3 solar masses in the ~2-Myr-old Chamaeleon I star-forming region, based on adaptive optics imaging with the ESO Very Large Telescope. Our observations have revealed 30 binaries and 6 triples, of which 19 and 4, respectively, are new discoveries. The overall multiplicity fraction we find for Cha I (~30%) is similar to those reported for other dispersed young associations, but significantly higher than seen in denser clusters and the field, for comparable samples. Both the frequency and the maximum separation of Cha I binaries decline with decreasing mass, while the mass ratios approach unity; conversely, tighter pairs are more likely to be equal mass. We confirm that brown dwarf companions to stars are rare, even at young ages at wide separations. Based on follow-up spectroscopy of two low-mass substellar companion candidates, we conclude that both are likely background stars. The overall multiplicity fraction in Cha I is in rough agreement with numerical simulations of cloud collapse and fragmentation, but its observed mass dependence is less steep than predicted. The paucity of higher-order multiples, in particular, provides a stringent constraint on the simulations, and seems to indicate a low level of turbulence in the prestellar cores in Cha I., Accepted for publication in ApJ

The Guitar Nebula is an H-alpha nebula produced by the interaction of the relativistic wind of a very fast pulsar, PSR B2224+65, with the interstellar medium. It consists of a ram-pressure confined bow shock near its head and a series of semi-circular bubbles further behind, the two largest of which form the body of the Guitar. We present a scenario in which this peculiar morphology is due to instabilities in the back flow from the pulsar bow shock. From simulations, these back flows appear similar to jets and their kinetic energy is a large fraction of the total energy in the pulsar's relativistic wind. We suggest that, like jets, these flows become unstable some distance down-stream, leading to rapid dissipation of the kinetic energy into heat, and the formation of an expanding bubble. We show that in this scenario the sizes, velocities, and surface brightnesses of the bubbles depend mostly on observables, and that they match roughly what is seen for the Guitar. We investigated the connection between disks and stellar rotation. Disk-locking theory predicts that accreting stars are preferentially slow rotators compared to their peers. If true, classical T Tauri stars (CTTS), which are accreting based on strong Ha emission, should have observably lower v sin i values compared to weak-lined T Tauri stars (WTTS), which are not accreting. We present our findings from high-resolution optical spectra taken with the Magellan Inamori Kyocera Echelle (MIKE) spectrograph on the Magellan Clay 6.5-m telescope located at the Las Campanas Observatory of 63 T Tauri stars in the Cha I SFR.

Characterizing multiplicity in the very low mass (VLM) domain is a topic of much current interest and fundamental importance. Here we report on a near-IR AO imaging survey of 31 young brown dwarfs and VLM stars, 28 of which are in Chamaeleon I, using the ESO VLT. Our survey is sensitive enough to detect equal mass binaries down to separations of 0.04-0.07" (6-10 AU at 160 pc) and, typically, companions with mass ratios as low as 0.2 outside of 0.2" (~30 AU). We resolve the suspected 0.16" (~26 AU) binary Cha_Halpha 2 and present two new binaries, Hn 13 and CHXR 15, with separations of 0.13" (~20 AU) and 0.30" (~50 AU); the latter is one of the widest VLM systems discovered to date. We do not find companions around the majority of our targets, giving a binary frequency of 11% [+9,-6], thus confirming the trend for a lower binary frequency with decreasing mass. By combining our work with previous surveys, we arrive at the largest sample of young VLMOs (72) with high angular resolution imaging to date. Its multiplicity fraction is in statistical agreement with that for VLMOs in the field. In addition we note that many field stellar binaries with lower binding energies and/or wider cross sections have survived dynamical evolution and that statistical models suggest tidal disruption by passing stars is unlikely to affect the binary properties of our systems. Thus, we argue that there is no significant evolution of multiplicity with age among brown dwarfs and VLM stars in OB and T associations between a few Myr to several Gyr. RX J0720.4-3125 is an isolated neutron star that, uniquely in its class, has shown changes in its thermal X-ray spectrum. We use new spectra taken with Chandra's Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer, as well as archival observations, to try to understand the timescale and nature of these changes. We construct lightcurves, which show both small, slow variations on a timescale of years, and a larger event that occurred more quickly, within half a year. From timing, we find evidence for a `glitch' coincident with this larger event, with a fractional increase in spin frequency of 5x10^{-8}. We compare the `before' and `after' spectra with those from RX J1308.6+2127, an isolated neutron star with similar temperature and magnetic field strength, but with a much stronger absorption feature in its spectrum. We find that the `after' spectrum can be represented remarkably well by the superposition of the `before' spectrum, scaled by two thirds, and the spectrum of RX J1308.6+2127, thus suggesting that the event affected approximately one third of the surface. White dwarf (WD) binary mergers are possible progenitors to a number of unusual stars and transient phenomena, including type Ia supernovae. To date, simulations of mergers have not included magnetic fields, even though they are believed to play a significant role in the evolution of the merger remnant. We simulated a 0.625 - 0.65 $M_{\odot}$ carbon-oxygen WD binary merger in the magnetohydrodynamic moving mesh code Arepo. Each WD was given an initial dipole field with a surface value of $\sim10^3$ G. As in simulations of merging double neutron star binaries, we find exponential field growth within Kelvin-Helmholtz instability-generated vortices during the coalescence of the two stars. The final field has complex geometry, and a strength $>10^{10}$ G at the center of the merger remnant. Its energy is $\sim2\times10^{47}$ ergs, $\sim0.2$% of the remnant's total energy. We have collected data spanning seven years of observations of the magnetar 4U 0142+61 in the infrared, optical and soft X-rays. These combine our own observations and analysis of archival data. We find that the source is variable in the optical, in contrast to what had been previously reported, that the K-band flux can vary by over a magnitude on the time-scale of days, and that the X-ray pulsed flux is not obviously correlated with either the total X-ray flux or infrared and optical fluxes. Furthermore, from multi-color photometry of the source within single nights, we conclude that there are two separate components to the infrared emission. The X-ray spectra of Anomalous X-ray Pulsars have long been fit by smooth, empirical models such as the sum of a black-body plus a power law. These reproduce the ~0.5 to 10 keV range well, but fail at lower and higher energies, grossly over-predicting the optical and under-predicting the hard X-ray emission. A poorly constrained source of uncertainty in determining the true, intrinsic spectra, in particular at lower energies, is the amount of interstellar extinction. In previous studies, extinction column densities with small statistical errors were derived as part of the fits of the spectra to simple continuum models. Different choices of model, however, each produced statistically acceptable fits, but a wide range of columns. Here, we attempt to measure the interstellar extinction in a model-independent way, using individual absorption edges of the elements O, Fe, Ne, Mg and Si in X-ray grating spectra taken with XMM-Newton. We find that our inferred equivalent hydrogen column density NH for 4U 0142+61 is a factor of 1.4 lower than the typically quoted value from black-body plus power-law fits, and is now consistent with estimates based on the dust scattering halo and visual extinction. For three other sources, we find column densities consistent with earlier estimates. We use our measurements to recover the intrinsic spectra of the AXPs empirically, without making assumptions on what the intrinsic spectral shapes ought to be. We have analyzed both archival and new infrared imaging observations of the field of the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar 1RXS J170849.0-400910, in search of the infrared counterpart. This field has been previously investigated, and one of the sources consistent with the position of the AXP suggested as the counterpart. We, however, find that this object is more likely a background star, while another object within the positional error circle has non-stellar colors and shows evidence for variability. These two pieces of evidence, along with a consistency argument for the X-ray-to-infrared flux ratio, point to the second source being the more likely infrared counterpart to the AXP., Comment: 19 pages AASTEX, 4 figure. We report the findings of a comprehensive study of disk accretion and related phenomena in four of the nearest young stellar associations spanning 6-30 million years in age, an epoch that may coincide with the late stages of planet formation. We have obtained ~650 multi-epoch high-resolution optical spectra of 100 low-mass stars that are likely members of the eta Chamaeleontis (~6 Myr), TW Hydrae (~8 Myr), beta Pictoris (~12 Myr) and Tucanae-Horologium (~30 Myr) groups. Our data were collected over 12 nights between 2004 December - 2005 July on the Magellan Clay 6.5m telescope. Based on H$\alpha$ line profiles, along with a variety of other emission lines, we find clear evidence of on-going accretion in three out of 11 eta Cha stars and two out of 32 TW Hydrae members. None of the 57 beta Pic or Tuc-Hor members shows measurable signs of accretion. Together, these results imply significant evolution of the disk accretion process within the first several Myr of a low-mass star's life. While a few disks can continue to accrete for up to ~10 Myr, our findings suggest that disks accreting for beyond that timescale are rather rare. This result provides an indirect constraint on the timescale for gas dissipation in inner disks and, in turn, on gas giant planet formation. All accretors in our sample are slow rotators, whereas non-accretors cover a large range in rotational velocities. This may hint at rotational braking by disks at ages up to ~8 Myr. Our multi-epoch spectra confirm that emission-line variability is common even in somewhat older T Tauri stars, among which accretors tend to show particularly strong variations. Thus, our results indicate that accretion and wind activity undergo significant and sustained variations throughout the lifetime of accretion disks., Comment: to appear in The Astrophysical Journal
