Within the RoadMap project we investigated the microphysical aspects of particle collisions during saltation on the Martian surface in laboratory experiments. Following the size distribution of ejected particles, their aerodynamic properties and aggregation status upon ejection, we now focus on the electrification and charge distribution of ejected particles. We analyzed rebound and ejection trajectories of grains in a vacuum setup with a strong electric field of 100 kV/m and deduced particle charges from their acceleration. The ejected particles have sizes of about 10 to 100 microns. They carry charges up to $10^5$ e or charge densities up to $> 10^7$ e/mm$^2$. We explore experimentally possible explanations of the polarization curves of the sunlight reflected by the Barbarian asteroids. Their peculiar polarization curves are characterized by a large inversion angle, around 30 degrees, which could be related to the presence of FeO-bearing spinel embedded in Calcium-Aluminum Inclusions. In order to test this hypothesis, we have measured the phase function and degree of linear polarization of six samples of Mg-rich olivine and spinel. For each material, we have analyzed the light scattering properties of a millimeter-sized grain and of two powdered samples with size distributions in the micrometer size range. The three spinel samples show a well-defined negative polarization branch with an inversion phase angle located around 24-30 degrees. In contrast, in the case of the olivine samples, the inversion angle is highly dependent on particle size and tends to decrease for larger sizes. We identify the macroscopic geometries as a possible explanation for the evident differences in the polarization curves between olivine and spinel millimeter samples. Although the polarization behaviour in near backscattering of the Barbara asteroid is similar to that of our spinel mm-sized sample in random orientation, this similarity could result in part from crystal retro-reflection rather than composition. This is part of an ongoing experimental project devoted to test separately several components of CV3-like meteorites, representative of the Barbarians composition, to disentangle their contributions to the polarization behavior of these objects.

We present optical, radio, and X-ray observations of SN2020bvc (=ASASSN20bs; ZTF20aalxlis), a nearby ($z=0.0252$; $d$=114 Mpc) broad-lined (BL) Type Ic supernova (SN). Our observations show that SN2020bvc shares several properties in common with the Ic-BL SN2006aj, which was associated with the low-luminosity gamma-ray burst (LLGRB) 060218. First, the 10 GHz radio light curve is on the faint end of LLGRB-SNe ($L_\mathrm{radio} \approx 10^{37}$erg/s): we model our VLA observations (spanning 13-43 d) as synchrotron emission from a mildly relativistic ($v \gtrsim 0.3c$) forward shock. Second, with Swift and Chandra we detect X-ray emission ($L_X \approx 10^{41}$erg/s) that is not naturally explained as inverse Compton emission or as part of the same synchrotron spectrum as the radio emission. Third, high-cadence ($6\times$/night) data from the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) shows a double-peaked optical light curve, the first peak from shock-cooling emission from extended low-mass material (mass $M<10^{-2} M_\odot$ at radius $R>10^{12}$cm) and the second peak from the radioactive decay of Ni-56. SN2020bvc is the first confirmed double-peaked Ic-BL SN discovered without a GRB trigger, and shows X-ray and radio emission similar to LLGRB-SNe: this is consistent with models in which the same mechanism produces both the LLGRB and the shock-cooling emission. For four of the five other nearby ($z\lesssim0.05$) Ic-BL SNe with ZTF high-cadence data, we rule out a first peak like that seen in SN2006aj and SN2020bvc, i.e. that lasts $\approx 1$d and reaches a peak luminosity $M \approx -18$. X-ray and radio follow-up observations of future such events will establish whether double-peaked optical light curves are indeed predictive of LLGRB-like X-ray and radio emission., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 39 pages, 17 figures. Lasing at the nanometre scale promises strong light-matter interactions and ultrafast operation. Plasmonic resonances supported by metallic nanoparticles have extremely small mode volumes and high field enhancements, making them an ideal platform for studying nanoscale lasing. At visible frequencies, however, the applicability of plasmon resonances is limited due to strong ohmic and radiative losses. Intriguingly, plasmonic nanoparticle arrays support non-radiative dark modes that offer longer life-times but are inaccessible to far-field radiation. Here, we show lasing both in dark and bright modes of an array of silver nanoparticles combined with optically pumped dye molecules. Linewidths of 0.2 nanometers at visible wavelengths and room temperature are observed. Access to the dark modes is provided by a coherent out-coupling mechanism based on the finite size of the array. The results open a route to utilize all modes of plasmonic lattices, also the high-Q ones, for studies of strong light-matter interactions, condensation and photon fluids., Comment: Accepted for publication in Nature Communications

We explore the superfluid phases of a two-component Fermi mixture with hybridized orbitals in optical lattices. We show that there exists a general mapping of this system to the Lieb lattice. By using simple multiband models with hopping between $s$ and $p$-orbital states, we show that superfluid order parameters can have a $\pi$-phase difference between lattice sites, which is distinct from the case with hopping between $s$-orbitals. If the population imbalance between the two spin species is tuned, the superfluid phase may evolve through various phases due to the interplay between hopping, interactions and imbalance. We study arrays of plasmonic nanoparticles combined with quantum emitters, quantum plasmonic lattices, as a platform for room temperature studies of quantum many-body physics. We outline a theory to describe surface plasmon polariton distributions when they are coupled to externally pumped molecules. The possibility of tailoring the dispersion in plasmonic lattices allows realization of a variety of distributions, including the Bose-Einstein distribution as in photon condensation. We show that the presence of losses can relax some of the standard dimensionality restrictions for condensation., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We study spatial coherence properties of a system composed of periodic silver nanoparticle arrays covered with a fluorescent organic molecule (DiD) film. The evolution of spatial coherence of this composite structure from the weak to the strong coupling regime is investigated by systematically varying the coupling strength between the localized DiD excitons and the collective, delocalized modes of the nanoparticle array known as surface lattice resonances. A gradual evolution of coherence from the weak to the strong coupling regime is observed, with the strong coupling features clearly visible in interference fringes. A high degree of spatial coherence is demonstrated in the strong coupling regime, even when the mode is very excitonlike (80%), in contrast to the purely localized nature of molecular excitons. We show that coherence appears in proportion to the weight of the plasmonic component of the mode throughout the weak-to-strong coupling crossover, providing evidence for the hybrid nature of the normal modes., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures including supplemental material

We study the superfluid properties of two-dimensional spin-population-imbalanced Fermi gases to explore the interplay between the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) phase transition and the possible instability towards the Fulde-Ferrell (FF) state. By the mean-field approximation together with quantum fluctuations, we obtain phase diagrams as functions of temperature, chemical potential imbalance and binding energy. We find that the fluctuations change the mean-field phase diagram significantly. We also address possible effects of the phase separation and/or the anisotropic FF phase to the BKT mechanism. The superfluid density tensor of the FF state is obtained, and its transverse component is found always vanishing. We study small systems of Mott insulating ultracold atoms under the influence of gauge potentials and spin-orbit couplings. We use second order perturbation theory in tunneling, derive an effective theory for the Mott insulators with one atom per site, and solve it exactly. We find dramatic changes in the level structure and in the amount of degeneracies expected. We also demonstrate the dynamical behavior as the barriers between plaquettes are gradually removed and find potentially high overlap with the resonating valence bond (RVB) state of the larger system., Comment: Minor changes in response to referee comments

We explore the stability of the interface between two phase-separated Bose gases in relative motion on a lattice. Gross-Pitaevskii-Bogoliubov theory and the Gutzwiller ansatz are employed to study the short- and long-time stability properties. The underlying lattice introduces effects of discreteness, broken spatial symmetry, and strong correlations, all three of which are seen to have considerable qualitative effects on the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Discreteness is found to stabilize low flow velocities, because of the finite energy associated with displacing the interface. Broken spatial symmetry introduces a dependence not only on the relative flow velocity, but on the absolute velocities. Strong correlations close to a Mott transition will stop the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability from affecting the bulk density and creating turbulence; instead, the instability will excite vortices with Mott-insulator filled cores., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

We present real-space dynamical mean-field theory calculations for attractively interacting fermions in three-dimensional lattices with elongated traps. The critical polarization is found to be 0.8, regardless of the trap elongation. Below the critical polarization, we find unconventional superfluid structures where the polarized superfluid and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov-type states emerge across the entire core region.

We study how the bosonic atoms on the excited p-band of an optical lattice are coupled to the lowest s-band and the 2nd excited d-band. We find that in some parameter regimes the atom-atom interactions can cause a dynamical instability of the p-band atoms towards decay to the s- and d-bands. We study many-body contributions to the effective interaction between fermions in a three-component Fermi mixture. We find that effective interactions induced by the third component can lead to a phase diagram different from that predicted if interactions with the third component are neglected. As a result, in a confining potential a superfluid shell structure can arise even for equal populations of the components. We also find a critical temperature for the BCS transition in a 6Li mixture which can deviate strongly from the one in a weakly interacting two-component system., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We investigate the effect of optical lattices on the BCS superfluidity by using the Gorkov--Melik-Barkhudarov (GMB) correction for a two-component Fermi gas. We find that the suppression of the order parameter is strongly enhanced by the lattice effects. The predictions made by the GMB corrections are in qualitative and, for the cases studied, quantitative agreement with previous quantum Monte Carlo results. We discuss how the GMB correction extends the validity of the mean-field theory to a wider range of tunable optical lattice systems in different dimensions., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study a gas of repulsively interacting bosons in an optical lattice and explore the physics beyond the lowest band Hubbard model. Utilizing a generalized Gutzwiller ansatz, we find how the lowest band physics is modified by the inclusion of the first excited bands. In contrast to the prediction of the lowest band Bose-Hubbard model, a reentrant behavior of superfluidity is envisaged as well as decreasing width of the Mott lobes at strong coupling.

Cooper problem for interacting fermions is solved in a lattice. It is found that the binding energy of the Cooper problem can behave qualitatively differently from the gap parameter of the BCS theory and that pairs of non-zero center of mass momentum are favored in systems with unequal Fermi energies., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We study a gas of strongly polarized cold fermions in an optical lattice when the excited p-bands are populated. We derive the relevant Hamiltonian and discuss the expected phase diagram for both repulsive and attractive interactions. In the parameter regime covered here, checkerboard anti-ferromagnetic ordering is found to be possible for repulsive interactions while for attractive interactions, transitions between different types of paired phases are predicted., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

In this paper we study the density noise correlations of the two component Fermi gas in optical lattices. Three different type of phases, the BCS-state (Bardeen, Cooper, and Schieffer), the FFLO-state (Fulde, Ferrel, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov), and BP (breach pair) state, are considered. We show how these states differ in their noise correlations. The noise correlations are calculated not only at zero temperature, but also at non-zero temperatures paying particular attention to how much the finite temperature effects might complicate the detection of different phases. Since one-dimensional systems have been shown to be very promising candidates to observe FFLO states, we apply our results also to the computation of correlation signals in a one-dimensional lattice. We study the phase diagram of an imbalanced two-component Fermi gas in optical lattices of 1-3 dimensions, considering the possibilities of the FFLO, Sarma/breached pair, BCS and normal states as well as phase separation, at finite and zero temperatures. In particular, phase diagrams with respect to average chemical potential and the chemical potential difference of the two components are considered, because this gives the essential information about the shell structures of phases that will occur in presence of an additional (harmonic) confinement. These phase diagrams in 1, 2 and 3 dimensions show in a striking way the effect of Van Hove singularities on the FFLO state. Although we focus on population imbalanced gases, the results are relevant also for the (effective) mass imbalanced case. We demonstrate by LDA calculations that various shell structures such as normal-FFLO-BCS-FFLO-normal, or FFLO-normal, are possible in presence of a background harmonic trap. The phases are reflected in noise correlations: especially in 1D the unpaired atoms leave a clear signature of the FFLO state as a zero-correlation area (``breach'') within the Fermi sea. This strong signature occurs both for a 1D lattice as well as for a 1D continuum. We present phase diagrams for a polarized Fermi gas in an optical lattice as a function of temperature, polarization, and lattice filling factor. We consider the Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO), Sarma or breached pair (BP), and BCS phases, and the normal state and phase separation. We show that the FFLO phase appears in a considerable portion of the phase diagram. The diagrams have two critical points of different nature. We study the properties of a trapped interacting three component Fermi gas. We assume that one of the components can have a different mass from the other two. We calculate the different phases of the three component mixture and find a rich variety of different phases corresponding to different pairing channels, and simple ways of tuning the system from one phase to another. In particular, we predict co-existence of several different superfluids in the trap, forming a shell structure, and phase transitions from this mixture of superfluids to a single superfluid when the system parameters or temperature is varied. Such shell structures realize superfluids with a non-trivial spatial topology and leave clear observable signatures in the density profile of the gas., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We consider pairing in a two-component atomic Fermi gas, in a three-dimensional optical lattice, when the components have unequal densities, i.e. the gas is polarized. We show that a superfluid where the translational symmetry is broken by a finite Cooper pair momentum, namely an FFLO-type state, minimizes the Helmholtz free energy of the system. We consider pairing in a three-component gas of degenerate fermions. In particular, we solve the finite temperature mean-field theory of an interacting gas for a system where both interaction strengths and fermion masses can be unequal. At zero temperature we find a a possibility of a quantum phase transition between states associated with pairing between different pairs of fermions. On the other hand, finite temperature behavior of the three-component system reveals some qualitative differences from the two-component gas: for a range of parameters it is possible to have two different critical temperatures. The lower one corresponds to a transition between different pairing channels, while the higher one corresponds to the usual superfluid-normal transition. We study the sound velocity in cubic and non-cubic three-dimensional optical lattices. We show how the van Hove singularity of the free Fermi gas is smoothened by interactions and eventually vanishes when interactions are strong enough. We study a quasi two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gas where the confinement in the third direction is due to a strong harmonic trapping. We investigate the behavior of such a system when the chemical potential is varied and find strong modifications of the superfluid properties due to the discrete harmonic oscillator states. We study the nonlinear excitations of a vortex-line in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the classical Euler dynamics of the vortex results in a description of the vortex line in terms of a (discrete) one-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which allows for both bright and gray soliton solutions. We investigate the quantum theory of a vortex line in a stack of weakly-coupled two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates, that is created by a one-dimensional optical lattice. We derive the dispersion relation of the Kelvin modes of the vortex line and also study the coupling between the Kelvin modes and the quadrupole modes. We solve the coupled dynamics of the vortex line and the quadrupole modes, both classically as well as quantum mechanically. We study the equilibrium states of a vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that quantum effects can be important and that it is even possible for the vortex to be strongly squeezed, which reflects itself in a different quantum mechanical uncertainty of the vortex position in two orthogonal directions. We examine the effect of the transverse breathing mode on the longitudinal sound propagation in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, we discuss how the coupling with the transverse breathing mode influences the sound velocity in an optical lattice. Using a variational approach we calculate the dispersion relations for the longitudinal sound mode and the transverse breathing mode analytically and find that the shift in the sound velocity from the uncoupled result can be large enough to be experimentally relevant. Using a variational ansatz for the wave function of the Bose-Einstein condensate, we develop a quantum theory of vortices and quadrupole modes in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We study the coupling between the quadrupole modes and Kelvin modes, which turns out to be formally analogous to the theory of parametric processes in quantum optics. This leads to the possibility of squeezing vortices. We solve the quantum multimode problem for the Kelvin modes and quadrupole modes numerically and find properties that cannot be explained with a simple linear-response theory., Comment: final version, minor changes

We investigate the low-lying excitations of a stack of weakly-coupled two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates that is formed by a one-dimensional optical lattice. In particular, we calculate the dispersion relations of the monopole and quadrupole modes, both for the ground state as well as for the case in which the system contains a vortex along the direction of the lasers creating the optical lattice. Our variational approach enables us to determine analytically the dispersion relations for an arbitrary number of atoms in every two-dimensional condensate and for an arbitrary momentum. Vortex nucleation in a Bose-Einstein condensate subject to a stirring potential is studied numerically using the zero-temperature, two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is found that this theory is able to describe the creation of vortices, but not the crystallization of a vortex lattice. In the case of a rotating, slightly anisotropic harmonic potential, the numerical results reproduce experimental findings, thereby showing that finite temperatures are not necessary for vortex excitation below the quadrupole frequency. In the case of a condensate subject to stirring by a narrow rotating potential, the process of vortex excitation is described by a classical model that treats the multitude of vortices created by the stirrer as a continuously distributed vorticity at the center of the cloud, but retains a potential flow pattern at large distances from the center., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures. We study the ground state of the rotating spinor condensate and show that for slow rotation the ground state of the ferromagnetic spinor condensate is a coreless vortex. While coreless vortex is not topologically stable, we show that there is an energetic threshold for the creation of a coreless vortex. This threshold corresponds to a critical rotation frequency that vanishes as the system size increases. Also, we demonstrate the dramatically different behavior of the spinor condensate with anti-ferromagnetic interactions. For anti-ferromagnetic spinor condensate the angular momentum as a function of rotation frequency exhibits the familiar staircase behavior, but in contrast to an ordinary condensate the first step is to the state with angular momentum 1/2 per particle., Comment: v2: Numerical parameters for trapping frequency in z-direction and for the particle number changed. The ground state solutions of a dilute Bose condensate with contact and magnetic dipole-dipole interactions are examined. By lowering the value of the scattering length, Goral et al. [cond-mat/9907308 and Phys. Rev. A {\bf 61}, 051601 (2000)] numerically predict a region of unstable solutions, accompanied by a neighborhood where the ground-state wave functions have internal structure. On the contrary, we find that the dipolar condensate has an intuitively-located stability region, and ground-state solutions near the instability threshold which are absent any unusual structure., Comment: 2 pages,1 figure

We calculate the collective excitations in a homogeneous F=2 spinor condensate in the absence of the magnetic field and also in a strong magnetic field. Almost all the excitations for a zero magnetic field are found to have either the Bogoliubov form or the free-particle form. We relate our results for a strong magnetic field to the concept of fragmented condensates and note that some observable quantities such as the speed of sound for the cyclic state depend on the relative phase between the spinor amplitudes for the $M=\pm 2, 0$ atoms., Comment: 6 pages 2 figures

In this paper we study the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in shallow traps. We discuss the case of a Gaussian potential, but many of our results apply also to the traps having a small quadratic anharmonicity. We show the errors introduced when a Gaussian potential is approximated with a parabolic potential, these errors can be quite large for realistic optical trap parameter values. We study the behavior of the condensate fraction as a function of trap depth and temperature and calculate the chemical potential of the condensate in a Gaussian trap. We propose a method for generating and controlling a spatially separated vortex--antivortex pair in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a toroidal potential. Our simulations of the time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation show that in toroidal condensates vortex dynamics are different from the dynamics in the homogeneous case. Our numerical results agree well with analytical calculations using the image method.
