5. The Impact of Academic Aspirations and Career Uncertainty on Students' College Outcomes

Abstract

Between the fall of 2009 and 2019, total postsecondary instituion enrollment in the United States decreased by 5%, and for those students who do enroll in college, many who lack clear career objectives drop out, making the U.S. the nation with the highest college dropout rate in the industrialized world. Students' academic aspiratoins and career certainty have been shown to impact college outcomes. However, the impact of career uncertainty and academic aspirations on students' college outcomes has not been studied nationally. Using binomial regression analyses and a nationally representative sample (N = 23,503) of high school students, we investigated the impact of high school students' career uncertainty and academic aspirations on their college outcomes. Findings indicate that academic aspirations were a significant predictor of students' college application, enrollment, attendance, and major decision status. Career uncertainty was a significant predictor of students' college enrollment status. We discuss implications for practice and future research.

15. Existing, experienced and informed realities of sport coaching through transformational leadership

Abstract

This study explores the applied practice setting of sport coaching through the theoretical lens of transformational leadership (TFL), examining the impact of this leadership approach specifically related to tennis coaches. Through embedding a novel, multistage, exploratory, sequential mixed methods design, conducted across three studies, the implementation of an iterative, reflexive research process was enabled supporting an integrative, abductive analysis of the theoretical and empirical data from across the studies. First, existing research from across TFL in sport coaching was systematically reviewed, identifying behavioural, relational, contextual and empirical themes. Specifically concerning integration of the differentiated constructs of TFL theory, the relational permutations of TFL behaviours across appropriately targeted sample populations, additionally the impactful differences evident across contexts varying sports are coached, and equally the opportunity for developing research designs that incorporate experimental, longitudinal, qualitative and mixed methods process, and evidenced outcomes. This highlighted current positioning of the research field through indicative trends, whilst also identifying opportunities for further enquiry, subsequently informing the implementation of an experiential narrative study conducted through use of semi-structured interviews (n=18) with experienced tennis coaches (M=18 years' experience). Employing reflexive thematic analysis of the tennis coaches' experiences as leadership figures enabled examination of the patterns identified, as well as the connections between the role of the coach and the specific constructs of TFL, alongside theoretical links to satisfaction of basic needs and mindfulness, culminating in three overarching themes: coaching context, satisfaction, and focus. The subsequent empirical data study utilised three measures (DTLI, BNSSS, MAAS) to further investigate TFL through the associations between tennis coaches and their athletes (n=422), informing a deeper understanding of behavioural, relational, and contextual impacts. The findings from the three studies highlight the current field of TFL in sport coaching research is limited in methodological scope and depth of evidence, which is problematic when attempting to demonstrate authentic transferability and generalisability across TFL in sport coaching research and applied practice contexts more broadly. Equally, awareness of the existing praxis of the differentiated constructs that form the conceptualisation of TFL within sport was limited, leading to the uncovering of complexities concerning enacting theoretical concepts across applied practice settings within tennis. Additionally, both the qualitative and empirical data suggest that satisfaction of basic needs, and the integral facets of mindfulness (awareness and acceptance), were apparent across coach experiences, and positively related to TFL approaches in tennis coaches, as perceived by their athletes. The convergence of these studies provides important insights into the challenges associated with activating TFL in sport coaching, whilst indicating a need for development of a broader range of research designs to support the further evidencing and application of this highly relevant theoretical concept, through authentic engagement and connection with both coaches and their athletes in specifically targeted applied practice settings.

Abstract

Lipid membranes, the barrier defining living cells and many of their sub-compartments, bind to a wide variety of nano- and micro-meter sized objects. In the presence of strong adhesive forces, membranes can strongly deform and wrap the particles, an essential step in crossing the membrane for a variety of health and disease-related processes. A large body of theoretical and numerical work has focused on identifying the physical properties that underly wrapping. Using a model system of micron-sized colloidal particles and giant unilamellar lipid vesicles with tunable adhesive forces, we measure a wrapping phase diagram and make quantitative comparisons to theoretical models. Our data is consistent with a model of membrane-particle interactions accounting for the adhesive energy per unit area, membrane bending rigidity, particle size, and vesicle radius.

Abstract

Children who experience trauma may experience negative health and educational outcomes. Teachers are critical stakeholders in trauma-informed schools and are tasked with recognizing and responding to the needs of students who experience trauma. However, teachers face barriers to implementing trauma-informed practices, including high levels of stress and lack of preparation. This article describes training embedded in an urban teacher preparation program aimed at increasing the trauma knowledge and skills confidence of teacher candidates. Findings suggest the training helped teacher candidates increase knowledge and skills and met stated needs. Recommendations for future research and implications for teachers and teacher educators are discussed.

Abstract

Energy-dense food alters dopaminergic (DA) transmission in the mesocorticolimbic (MCL) system and can promote reward dysfunctions, compulsive feeding, and weight gain. Yet the mechanisms by which nutrients influence the MCL circuitry remain elusive. Here, we show that nutritional triglycerides (TGs), a conserved post-prandial metabolic signature among mammals, can be metabolized within the MCL system and modulate DA-associated behaviors by gating the activity of dopamine receptor subtype 2 (DRD2)-expressing neurons through a mechanism that involves the action of the lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Further, we show that in humans, post-prandial TG excursions modulate brain responses to food cues in individuals carrying a genetic risk for reduced DRD2 signaling. Collectively, these findings unveil a novel mechanism by which dietary TGs directly alter signaling in the reward circuit to regulate behavior, thereby providing a new mechanistic basis by which energy-rich diets may lead to (mal)adaptations in DA signaling that underlie reward deficit and compulsive behavior.

33. Using Animations to Support Student Learning in Undergraduate Physiology

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate if videos created by teaching staff had a positive impact on student learning of integrative physiological concepts. Eighteen undergraduate students enrolled on a sport and exercise science degree attended an introduction to immunology short course. All students were taught together and then split into two groups stratified by performance on a recent summative assessment. One group used the taught materials to prepare for a test, and the other group was provided with three animations alongside the taught materials. All students sat matching tests on the day of the course and repeated the test 1 week later. The intervention group scored on average 22% (95% CI 11, 33) higher than the control group on test one. The scores from both groups reduced by approximately 10% on test two. Results on the multiple-choice questions were comparable between groups, with the main difference observed in short answer questions. Students in the intervention group identified that the animations helped to simplify processes by providing a more visual way of learning. This may suggest that the videos are most efficacious for helping the understanding of biological processes rather than the recollection of facts or information.

34. Benefits and Motives for Peer Mentoring in Higher Education: An Exploration through the Lens of Cultural Capital

Abstract

Despite the large and diverse cohorts recruited annually across the globe to university sport programmes, few studies have assessed the value of peer support within sports education settings. Even more surprising is the lack of research to have explored the encounters of peer mentors who help deliver these schemes and the impact it had on their professional development. Conducted at a post-92 English university, this study explored the benefits and motives of students volunteering to become peer mentors in their second year of university. Drawing on Bourdieu's key concepts as the guiding theoretical framework, the study suggests that participants, who were predominantly first generation to attend university, engaged in peer mentoring to develop cultural capital for their chosen professional field, but also to give back and support the development of social and cultural capital for mentees. Practical implications for developing future peer support programmes are presented, as are future research avenues and limitations.

Abstract

Plasma membrane proteins play pivotal roles in receiving and transducing signals from other cells and from the environment and are vital for cellular functionality. Enzyme-based, proximity-dependent approaches, such as biotin identification (BioID), combined with mass spectrometry have begun to illuminate the landscape of proximal protein interactions within intracellular compartments. To extend the potential of these approaches to study the extracellular environment, we developed extracellular TurboID (ecTurboID), a method designed to profile the interactions between proteins on the surfaces of living cells over short timescales using the fast-acting biotin ligase TurboID. After optimizing our experimental and data analysis strategies to capture extracellular proximity interactions, we used ecTurboID to reveal the proximal interactomes of several plasma membrane proteins, including the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). We found that EGF stimulation induced an association between EGFR and the low-density lipoprotein receptor (LDLR) and changed the interactome of LDLR by increasing its proximity with proteins that regulate EGFR signaling. The identification of this interaction between two well-studied and clinically relevant receptors illustrates the utility of our modified proximity labeling methodology for identifying dynamic extracellular associations between plasma membrane proteins.
