1. Well-posedness and long-term behaviour of buffered flows in infinite networks

Abstract

We consider a transport problem on an infinite metric graph and discuss its well-posedness and long-term behaviour under the condition that the mass flow is buffered in at least one of the vertices. In order to show the well-posedness of the problem, we employ the theory of $C_0$-semigroups and prove a Desch--Schappacher type perturbation theorem for dispersive semigroups. Investigating the long-term behaviour of the system, we prove irreducibility of the semigroup under the assumption that the underlying graph is strongly connected and an additional spectral condition on its adjacency matrix. Moreover, we employ recent results about the convergence of stochastic semigroups that dominate a kernel operator to prove that the solutions converge strongly to equilibrium. Finally, we prove that the solutions converge uniformly under more restrictive assumptions.

Abstract

We introduce trimmed NURBS surfaces with accurate boundary control, briefly called ABC-surfaces, as a solution to the notorious problem of constructing watertight or smooth ($G^1$ and $G^2)$ multi-patch surfaces within the function range of standard CAD/CAM systems and the associated file exchange formats. Our construction is based on the appropriate blend of a base surface, which traces out the intended global shape, and a series of reparametrized ribbons, which dominate the shape near the boundary.

8. Uniform convergence of stochastic semigroups

Abstract

For stochastic $C_0$-semigroups on $L^1$-spaces there is wealth of results that show strong convergence to an equilibrium as $t \to \infty$, given that the semigroup contains a partial integral operator. This has plenty of applications to transport equations and in mathematical biology. However, up to now partial integral operators do not play a prominent role in theorems which yield uniform convergence of the semigroup rather than only strong convergence. In this article we prove that, for irreducible stochastic semigroups, uniform convergence to an equilibrium is actually equivalent to being partially integral and uniformly mean ergodic. In addition to this Tauberian theorem, we also show that our semigroup is uniformly convergent if and only if it is partially integral and the dual semigroup satisfies a certain irreducibility condition. Our proof is based on a uniform version of a lower bound theorem of Lasota and Yorke, which we combine with various techniques from Banach lattice theory., Comment: 12 pages

Abstract

Dog breeds are grouped based on scientific agreement, whether for traditional reasons or specific tasks during their domestication. Discrepancies may occur between public views of breed behaviour and actual evidence. This research aims to investigate differences in five behavioural traits (aggression towards people, aggression towards animals, fearfulness, responsiveness to training, and activity/excitability) by using the Dog Personality Questionnaire (DPQ) across six conventional groups/clusters of dog breeds (herding, hunting, guarding, companion dogs, potentially aggressive breeds, and mixed-breed dogs) and to assess hypotheses derived from common public presumptions. A cohort of 1309 dog owners sourced through diverse online platforms took part in the study. Contrary to stereotypes, the findings indicate that breeds labelled as “potentially aggressive” display lower levels of aggression compared to guarding breeds (χ2 (5) = 3.657, p = 0.041) and mixed-breeds (χ2 (5) = 3.870, p = 0.002). Additionally, mixed-breed dogs exhibited the highest levels of fearfulness among the six conventional clusters. In terms of aggression and gender, males demonstrated higher aggression levels towards both humans and animals compared to females (p = 0.001). These results challenge established assumptions and emphasise the necessity of evidence-based methodologies in the assessment of canine behaviour.

19. Development and evaluation of Dona, a privacy-preserving donation platform for messaging data from WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram.

Abstract

Social interactions are a fundamental aspect of human life, yet, their objective and naturalistic measurement remains challenging for scientific research. This challenge can be addressed using digital communication data. To this end, we have developed Dona, an open-source platform for donating messaging data from WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram. Given the highly sensitive nature of messaging data, we ensure participant privacy through rigorous data minimization. Dona removes all sensitive information on the user side prior to donation, retaining only de-identified meta-data such as message length and timestamps. This paper presents an overview of the platform, a deployment guide, and example use cases. In addition, we evaluate the informativeness of minimized messaging data for studying social interactions with two approaches. First, we conducted a user study in which 85 participants donated their data, received visualizations of their messaging behavior and evaluated the informativeness of this visual feedback. Second, we performed a quantitative analysis using over 1500 donated chats to confirm whether minimized messaging data captures known aspects of human interactions, such as interaction balance, heterogeneity, and burstiness. The results demonstrate that minimized, de-identified messaging data reflects informative interaction features as assessed by both self-reports and objective metrics. In conclusion, Dona is a donation platform well suited for sensitive contexts in which researchers aim to balance participant privacy with the acquisition of objective and informative data on social interactions. Abstract

This research paper presents a data-based energy management method for a vessel that predicts the upcoming load demands based on data from weather information and its automated tracking system. The vessel is powered by a hybrid propulsion system consisting of a high-temperature fuel cell system to cover the base load and a battery system to compensate for the fuel cell’s limited dynamic response capability to load fluctuations. The developed energy management method predicts the load demand of the next time steps by analyzing physical relationships utilizing operational and positional data of a real vessel. This allows a steadier operation of the fuel cell and reduces stress factors leading to accelerated aging and increasing the resource efficiency of the propulsion system. Since large ships record tracking data of their cruise and no a priori training is required to adjust the energy management, the proposed method can be implemented with small additional computational effort. The functionality of the energy management method was verified using data from a real ship and records of the water currents in the North Sea. The accuracy of the load prediction is 2.7% and the attenuation of the fuel cell’s power output could be increased by approximately 32%.

Abstract

Conditional mutual information is important in the selection and interpretation of graphical models. Its empirical version is well known as a generalised likelihood ratio test and that it may be represented as a difference in entropy. We consider the forward difference expansion of the entropy function defined on all subsets of the variables under study. The elements of this expansion are invariant to permutation of their suffices and relate higher order mutual informations to lower order ones. The third order difference is expressible as an, apparently assymmetric, difference between a marginal and a conditional mutual information. Its role in the decomposition for explained information provides a technical definition for synergy between three random variables. Positive values occur when two variables provide alternative explanations for a third; negative values, termed synergies, occur when the sum of explained information is greater than the sum of its parts. Synergies tend to be infrequent; they connect the seemingly unrelated concepts of suppressor variables in regression, on the one hand, and unshielded colliders in Bayes networks (immoralities), on the other. We give novel characterizations of these phenomena that generalise to categorical variables and to higher dimensions. We propose an algorithm for systematically computing low order differences from a given graph. Examples from small scale real-life studies indicate the potential of these techniques for empirical statistical analysis.
