Abstract

This work is devoted to the algebraic and arithmetic properties of Rankin–Cohen brackets allowing to define and study them in several natural situations of number theory. It focuses on the property of these brackets to be formal deformations of the algebras on which they are defined, with related questions on restriction-extension methods. The general algebraic results developed here are applied to the study of formal deformations of the algebra of weak Jacobi forms and their relation with the Rankin–Cohen brackets on modular and quasimodular forms.

Quelle méthode permet de limiter l’abondance des renouées sur une surface, et en combien de temps? Cet article de synthèse propose de dresser le portrait des processus et des facteurs qui sous-tendent les invasions des renouées de l’échelle de l’établissement des jeunes plantes à l’échelle régionale.

9. The role of hen's weight and recent experience on dyadic conflict outcome

Abstract

This study simultaneously varied experiences of recent victory or defeat, 2-hour familiarity with the meeting place, and hen weight in order to understand their combined effects on the establishment of dyadic dominance relationships between hens not previously acquainted with each other. Three kinds of encounters were arranged: (i) a previous winner unfamiliar with the meeting place met a previous loser familiar with the meeting place (n =28 dyads); (ii) a previous winner met a previous loser, both unfamiliar with the meeting place (n=27); (iii) a previous winner familiar with the meeting place encountered a previous loser unfamiliar with the meeting place (n=28). The weight asymmetry was combined with these three types of encounters by selecting hens showing various weight differences, in favour of the recent loser in 54 dyads and of the recent winner in 29 dyads. Results indicate that recent victory or defeat experience significantly affected the outcome. Even an important weight asymmetry, or familiarity with the meeting place were not sufficient for a hen recently defeated to overcome an opponent that was previously victorious. A 2-hour period of familiarization with the meeting place did not provide any significant advantage over unfamiliarity. Although a significant relationship was found to exist between comb and wattles areas and the initial and final statuses, examination of partial correlations indicates that the influence was from initial status to final status, rather than from comb and wattles to final status. These results suggest that more importance should be attributed to recent social experience in comparison to intrinsic factors in determining dyadic dominance in the hen.

10. The role of recent experience and weight on hen's agonistic behaviour during dyadic conflict resolution.

Recent victory or defeat experiences and 2-hour familiarity with the meeting place were combined with size differences in order to better understand their effects on the behaviour leading to the establishment of dyadic dominance relationships between hens not previously acquainted with each other. Three kinds of encounters were videotaped: (i) a previous winner unfamiliar with the meeting place met a previous loser familiar for 2 hours with the meeting place (n = 12 dyads); (ii) as in (i) but both were unfamiliar with the meeting place (n=12); (iii) as in (i) but the previous winner was familiar with the meeting place while the previous loser was unfamiliar (n=13). The weight asymmetry was combined with these three types of encounters by selecting hens of various weight differences: in 29 dyads the recent loser was heavier than the recent winner and in 8 dyads it was the reverse. Recent experience had a major influence upon both agonistic behaviour and dominance outcome. Hens that were familiar with the meeting site initiated attacks more frequently than their unfamiliar opponent but did not win significantly more often. Recent experience and site familiarity could be used to identify 80% of future initiators. Once the first aggressive behaviour had been initiated, it led to victory of its initiator in 92% of cases. Weight was not found to influence agonistic behaviour nor dominance outcome. However, hens with superior comb and wattles areas won significantly more initial meetings than opponents with smaller ones. In the final encounters, victory also went more frequently to the bird showing larger comb and wattles, which happened also to be the previous dominant in a majority of cases. The use of higher-order partial correlations as an ex post facto control for comb and wattles indicates that they were not influential upon agonistic behaviour nor on dominance outcome, but were simply co-selected with the selection of victorious and defeated birds in the first phase of the experiment designed to let hens acquire recent victory/defeat experience.

15. Invariants of formal pseudodifferential operator algebras and algebraic modular forms

Abstract

We study from an algebraic point of view the question of extending an action of a group \(\Gamma\) on a commutative domain \(R\) to a formal pseudodifferential operator ring \(B=R(\!(x\,;\,d)\!)\) with coefficients in \(R\), as well as to some canonical quadratic extension \(C=R(\!(x^{1/2}\,;\,\frac 12 d)\!)_2\) of \(B\). We give a necessary and sufficient condition of compatibility between the action and the derivation $d$ of $R$ for such an extension to exist, and we determine all possible extensions of the action to \(B\) and \(C\). We describe under suitable assumptions the invariant subalgebras \(B^\Gamma\) and \(C^\Gamma\) as Laurent series rings with coefficients in \(R^\Gamma\). The main results of this general study are applied in a numbertheoretical context to the case where \(\Gamma\) is a subgroup of \({\rm SL}(2,\C)\) acting by homographies on an algebra \(R\) of functions in one complex variable. Denoting by \(M_j\) the vector space of algebraic modular forms in $R$ of weight \(j\) (even or odd), we build for any nonnegative integer \(k\) a linear isomorphism between the subspace \(C_k^\Gamma\) of invariant operators of order \(\geq k\) in \(C^\Gamma\) and the product space \(\mathcal{M}_k=\prod_{j\geq k}M_j\), which can be identified with a space of algebraic Jacobi forms of weight \(k\). It results in particular a structure of noncommutative algebra on \(\mathcal M_0\) and an algebra isomorphism \(\Psi:\mathcal M_0\to C_0^\Gamma\), whose restriction to the particular case of even weights was previously known in the litterature. We study properties of this correspondence combining arithmetical arguments and the use of the algebraic results of the first part of the article.

Abstract

Invasive alien species are a growing threat for environment and health. They also have a major economic impact, as they can damage many infrastructures. The Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica), present in North America, Northern and Central Europe as well as in Australia and New Zealand, is listed by the World Conservation Union as one of the world's worst invasive species. So far, most models have dealt with how the invasion spreads without management. This paper aims at providing a model able to study and predict the dynamics of a stand of Japanese knotweed taking into account mowing as a management technique. The model we propose is stochastic and individual-based, which allows us taking into account the behaviour of individuals depending on their size and location, as well as individual stochasticity. We set plant dynamics parameters thanks to a calibration with field data, and study the influence of the initial population size, the mean number of mowing events a year and the management project duration on mean area and mean number of crowns of stands. In particular, our results provide the sets of parameters for which it is possible to obtain the stand eradication, and the minimal duration of the management project necessary to achieve this latter.

22. Enhancing CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation in mixed matrix membrane: A comprehensive study on Pebax®1657 with SSMMP/IL for improved efficiency.

Abstract

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been proposed as a solution to surmount Robeson's trade‐off curves and have demonstrated efficacy in gas separation processes, particularly for CO2 capture. In this study, MMMs based on Pebax®1657 were obtained utilizing synthetic silico‐metallic mineral particles (SSMMP) functionalized with ionic liquids (ILs). The objective was to attain enhanced CO2 separation performance, thereby showcasing the potential to mitigate the environmental repercussions of industrial processes that entail greenhouse gas emissions. For membrane production, an ethanol/water mixture was used as solvent, with the SSMMP/IL content varying from 0.5 to 20% by weight of the polymer. The primary aim of this study was to assess the effect of filler addition on permeability and selectivity for CO2, CH4, and N2. Comprehensive analyses, including SEM, FTIR, TGA, DSC, and DMA were conducted to evaluate the properties of the produced membranes. Gas permeability and ideal selectivity were measured at 25°C and different pressures, ranging from 1 to 7 bar. Characterization results demonstrate that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of MMMs increased compared to pure Pebax®1657, indicating that the addition of SSMMP/IL reduces the flexibility of the PEO chains, forming a rigid interface at the polymer/filler, which may enhance selectivity. This effect, corroborated by gas permeation, was observed for both CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4. For CO2/N2, the highest selectivity was achieved at lower filler concentrations, gradually decreasing as the filler load increased. MMM‐0.5 wt% achieved the highest selectivity of 91.96. The membrane CO2 permeability rose with an elevated filler content, rising from 84.21 for pure Pebax®1657 to 192.17 Barrer for MMM‐20 wt% at 4 bar. The permeability results were influenced by the gas diffusion coefficients of the MMMs, which increased with increasing SSMMP/IL content. The effect of feed pressure on MMM‐5 wt% was also assessed, revealing that CO2 permeability increased with increasing pressure, from 126.72 Barrer at 1 bar to 165.56 Barrer at 7 bar. This work showcased the viability of MMMs incorporating SSMMP/IL for industrial use, as they displayed separation capabilities that exceeded the 2008 Robeson upper bound. Highlights: Mixed matrix membranes based on Pebax®1657 and SSMMP‐20%‐[bmim][Tf2N] were prepared.CO2 permeability of the MMMs was increased by 128% and CO2/N2 selectivity by 83%.Higher CO2 pressures increase MMMs permeability.The obtained MMMs have separation performances above the Robeson upper Bound. 30. Determination of energy requirements after minor burns using indirect calorimetry: A descriptive cohort study.

Abstract

Background: Minor burns could be associated with moderate hypermetabolism. In this study, the primary outcome was measured energy expenditure (mEE) determined by indirect calorimetry in patients with minor burns. We also compared mEE with predictive values and actual energy intakes. Methods: Adults with minor burns exclusively treated on an outpatient basis were included. During the week following injury, a dietitian performed indirect calorimetry (Q‐NRG in canopy mode), calculated the estimated energy expenditure (eEE) based on the Harris‐Benedict (HB) and Henry formulas, and evaluated daily energy intakes using a food anamnesis. Results: Forty‐nine patients (59.2% male; median age: 35 [interquartile range: 29–46.5] years; body mass index [BMI]: 26.2 [22.3–29.6] kg/m2; burn surface area [BSA]: 1.5% [1%–2%]) were included 4 (2–6) days after injury. The mEE was 1863 (1568–2199) kcal or 25 (22.4–28.5) kcal/kg and 1838 (1686–2026) kcal or 26.1 (23.7–27.7) kcal/kg in patients who were respectively fasting for >10 h or not (P = 0.991 or P = 0.805). The total mEE was 104% (95%–116%) and 108% (99%–122%) of the total eEE using the HB and Henry formulas, respectively, with diet‐induced thermogenesis and physical activity level. Hypermetabolism (ie, oxygen consumption at rest ≥3.5 ml/kg/min) was observed in 21/49 (42.9%) patients. Energy intakes corresponded to 71% (60%–86%) of the total mEE. Conclusion: Performing indirect calorimetry in adults with minor burns revealed that ≥40% of the tested adults presented a hypermetabolism and that their mEE was not covered by their energy intakes. Abstract

We report the imaging of tendon, a connective tissue rich in collagen type I proteins, with Interferometric Second Harmonic Generation (I-SHG) microscopy. We observed that the noncentrosymmetric structural organization can be maintained along the fibrillar axis over more than 150 {\mu}m, while in the transverse direction it is ~1-15 {\mu}m. Those results are explained by modeling tendon as a heterogeneous distribution of noncentrosymmetric nanocylinders (collagen fibrils) oriented along the fibrillar axis. The preservation of the noncentrosymmetric structural organization over multiple tens of microns reveals that tendon is made of domains in which the fraction occupied by fibrils oriented in one direction is larger than in the other.

Abstract

We report site testing results obtained in night-time during the polar autumn and winter at Dome C. These results were collected during the first Concordia winterover by A. Agabi. They are based upon seeing and isoplanatic angle monitoring, as well as in-situ balloon measurements 2 of the refractive index structure constant profiles Cn (h). Atmosphere is divided into two regions: (i) a 36 m high surface layer responsible of 87% of the turbulence and (ii) a very stable free atmosphere above with a median seeing of 0.36+-0.19 arcsec at an elevation of h = 30 m. The median seeing measured with a DIMM placed on top of a 8.5 m high tower is 1.3+-0.8 arcsec., Comment: accepted for publication in PASP (oct 2005)
