3. Social media recruitment for mental health research: A systematic review.

Abstract

BackgroundSocial media holds exciting promise for advancing mental health research recruitment, however, the extent and efficacy to which these platforms are currently in use are underexplored.ObjectiveA systematic review was conducted to characterize the current use and efficacy of social media in recruiting participants for mental health research.MethodA literature review was performed using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsychINFO. Only non-duplicative manuscripts written in the English language and published between 1/1/2004-3/31/2019 were selected for further screening. Data extracted included study type and design, participant inclusion criteria, social media platform, advertising strategy, final recruited sample size, recruitment location, year, monetary incentives, comparison to other recruitment methods if performed, and final cost per participant.ResultsA total of 176 unique studies that used social media for mental health research recruitment were reviewed. The majority of studies were cross-sectional (62.5%) in design and recruited adults. Facebook was overwhelmingly the recruitment platform of choice (92.6%), with the use of paid advertisements being the predominant strategy (60.8%). Of the reviewed studies, substance abuse (43.8%) and mood disorders (15.3%) were the primary subjects of investigation. In 68.3% of studies, social media recruitment performed as well as or better than traditional recruitment methods in the number and cost of final enrolled participants. The majority of studies used Facebook for recruitment at a median cost per final recruited study participant of $19.47. In 55.6% of the studies, social media recruitment was the more cost-effective recruitment method when compared to traditional methods (e.g., referrals, mailing).ConclusionSocial media appears to be an effective and economical recruitment tool for mental health research. The platform raises methodological and privacy concerns not covered in current research regulations that warrant additional consideration.

7. College Students and the Rhetorical Dissent Goal: Associations between Dissent Goal, Dissent Target, and Perceptions of Instructor Power

Abstract

Some college students who experience discontent with the instructional experience engage in a complaining and problem-solving behavior called "instructional dissent." Three types of dissent have been identified: rhetorical, expressive, and vengeful. Student perceptions of "instructor power" influence if and how students dissent. This study explored the relationship between instructor power and rhetorical dissent. Previous studies measured rhetorical dissent as a single variable incorporating the goal for dissenting and the target for dissent expression, using the instructor in the class as the only target. This study measured dissent goal and dissent target as separate variables and included the instructor in the class and other targets for dissent expression. University undergraduates ( N = 713) completing an online survey were asked to recall a very disappointing instructional experience and then asked questions that measured their perceptions of instructor power, their goal(s) for pursuing dissent, and the individuals they targeted with their expressions of dissent. French and Raven's (1959) five bases of social power were used to measure instructor power. Reward and legitimate power were negatively associated with the rhetorical dissent goal while coercive power was positively associated with this goal. The rhetorical dissent goal was positively associated with the dissent targets "this professor," "administration," and "another professor." 10. The Influence of Standards on K-12 Teaching and Student Learning: A Research Synthesis

Abstract

This report is the fourth research synthesis that Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), the Regional Educational Laboratory for the Central Region states, has conducted in its laboratory leadership area of standards-based educational practice. The goals for the current research synthesis are: (1) To identify a comprehensive collection of studies on standards-based education, gathered through a structured search process and screened for relevance and research quality; (2) To describe and analyze these studies through a systematic review that examines teacher and student outcomes in relation to the variables of standards-based curriculum, standards-based instructional guidelines, and standards-based assessment; and (3) To describe the implications of study findings for researchers, education administrators, and policymakers. This synthesis is organized into six chapters. Chapter 1 describes the research problem and conceptual framework, provides background information on standards-based education, and discusses prior research. Chapter 2 describes the methods used to search the literature, code the studies, and synthesize results. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 review research on the influences of standards-based curriculum, standards-based instructional guidelines, and standards-based assessment, respectively. Chapter 6 summarizes the findings across the studies of the three variables and provides general conclusions. Appendices include additional details on the literature searches, the instrument used to code the studies, and tables of the reviewed studies. The tables describe in detail the characteristics, methods, and findings of the studies and serve as an annotated bibliography. 24. Student Perceptions of School Climate: A Validity and Data Use Study of a District-Developed Survey

Abstract

Over the past 25 years, researchers have consistently reported that students' perceptions of their school's climate can have a measurable impact on their level of engagement in school, motivation to learn, social development, and, ultimately, their academic achievement. In light of the continued emphasis on education reform and school accountability, the ability to accurately measure the learning environment, interpret the results from that measure, and then determine the appropriate course of action in addressing areas of concern has become increasingly important for school leaders. This dissertation used an embedded mixed methods design to examine one district's self-developed measure of their students' perceptions of school climate in order to determine if there was sufficient validity and reliability evidence for results to be used by school leadership (i.e., principals) to make data-driven decisions regarding implementing initiatives and interventions for improving or enhancing the school climate. Additionally, the measure was examined for variations in results for specific groups of students based on their grade level, gender, and ethnicity. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted, along with reliability analysis and invariance testing. Because the purpose of the survey was to obtain data on school climate that could then be examined and used to make decisions, interviews with school leadership team members were conducted to provide insight into how they had used previous data reports and how a new reporting structure (i.e., by factor) would impact their use of the data. Overall, results from the quantitative analyses found the EFA results indicated over half of the survey items were not functioning the way in which they were intended. With these items removed, a three factor CFA model was conducted to determine if there was appropriate model fit as well as invariance across gender, grade level, and ethnicity. The CFA model fit statistics were acceptable and the invariance tests held across each group however, further revisions of the instrument are recommended in order to develop a measure that will address the needs expressed during the school leadership interviews and will also accurately reflect students' experiences in their school. Interviews revealed limited use of the data reports from the survey due to lack of time, length of the reports, and absence of district guidance on how to use student results to make program decisions.
