Most problems in Earth sciences aim to do inferences about the system, where accurate predictions are just a tiny part of the whole problem. Inferences mean understanding variables relations, deriving models that are physically interpretable, that are simple parsimonious, and mathematically tractable. Machine learning models alone are excellent approximators, but very often do not respect the most elementary laws of physics, like mass or energy conservation, so consistency and confidence are compromised. In this paper, we describe the main challenges ahead in the field, and introduce several ways to live in the Physics and machine learning interplay: to encode differential equations from data, constrain data-driven models with physics-priors and dependence constraints, improve parameterizations, emulate physical models, and blend data-driven and process-based models. The percentage of hypervirulent M1UK lineage isolates increased significantly, from 22.1% in 2018 to 60.2% in 2023. We report a group A streptococcal outbreak in a geriatric mental health inpatient unit. Communication with cognitively impaired patients, limitations in adherence to hygiene practices, and communal dining may have facilitated transmission. Settle plates aided in identifying a colonized patient. Rapid access to whole-genome sequencing facilitated assessment and management. • GAS outbreaks may occur in any congregate setting housing frail older adults. • Whole genome sequencing could facilitate assessment and management. • Settles plates may help identify colonized patients when routine swabs cannot be obtained. Background Lower respiratory infections and invasive disease caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 3 remain major clinical challenges around the world, despite widespread availability of updated vaccines. Methods As part of CANWARD, antimicrobial susceptibility testing and serotyping were performed on all S. pneumoniae isolates from 2007 to 2021. A subset of 226/264 (85.6%) serotype 3 isolates were selected for WGS to determine sequence type (ST)/clonal cluster (CC) and correspondence of antimicrobial resistance determinants (erm , mefAE , tetM , cat , folA , folP) with resistance phenotype. Results Of the 3,039 S. pneumoniae isolates obtained from 2007 to 2021, 8.7% (n = 264) were serotype 3, with 64.0% of respiratory origin and 36.0% from blood. Of 226 sequenced serotype 3 isolates, 184 (81.4%) were ST180 (GPSC12). The proportion of ST8561 (single locus variant of ST180) increased from 7.2% to 16.6% during the study period. An increasing proportion of serotype 3 isolates had phenotypic resistance (P = 0.0007) and genetic resistance determinants (P = 0.004), comparing 2017–21 to 2007–11, largely due to a recently expanded ST180 clade with cat , tetM and mef determinants. Conclusions S. pneumoniae serotype 3 from GPSC12 continues to dominate throughout Canada, with an increase in the proportion of ST8561. The proportion of serotype 3 isolates that are phenotypically resistant and with genetic resistance determinants is increasing over time, reflecting a global increase in GPSC12 genotypes with known resistance determinants. Phylogenomic characterization of isolates collected over time and from around the world may facilitate improved treatment and enhanced prevention strategies, including new vaccines with activity against S. pneumoniae serotype 3. AbstractWe analyzed invasive group A streptococcal puerperal sepsis cases in a large health zone in Alberta, Canada between 2013 and 2022. Of the 21 cases, 85.7% were adjudicated as hospital/delivery-acquired, with 2 clusters having identical isolates found through whole genome sequencing. We implemented policy interventions across Alberta aimed at preventing future infections.

- Abstract
The WHO research agenda for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in human health has identified 40 research priorities to be addressed by the year 2030. These priorities focus on bacterial and fungal pathogens of crucial importance in addressing AMR, including drug-resistant pathogens causing tuberculosis. These research priorities encompass the entire people-centred journey, covering prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of antimicrobial-resistant infections, in addition to addressing the overarching knowledge gaps in AMR epidemiology, burden and drivers, policies and regulations, and awareness and education. The research priorities were identified through a multistage process, starting with a comprehensive scoping review of knowledge gaps, with expert inputs gathered through a survey and open call. The priority setting involved a rigorous modified Child Health and Nutrition Research Initiative approach, ensuring global representation and applicability of the findings. The ultimate goal of this research agenda is to encourage research and investment in the generation of evidence to better understand AMR dynamics and facilitate policy translation for reducing the burden and consequences of AMR.

Europe in general continues to have difficulty in absorbing the ongoing influx of economic migrants from less advanced Continents. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether welfare traditions in Spain and Norway can explain differences between them regarding social housing policies for refugees at the local community level. Alicante in Spain and Moss in Norway are our cases, and we have used both documents and interviews throughout the study. We have found that local Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) in Alicante play the dominant role, whereas it is the municipality in this respect in Moss. These different roles fit perfectly into the welfare programs operated in both countries, while similarities that we have found have its roots in Spain's and Norway's obligations according to United Nations conventions. We argue that certain housing challenges for refugees do not relate to welfare traditions, but to some refugees hope to return to their home country (both cases), while others wish to travel to another European country (in the case of Spain). Background: Invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS, Streptococcus pyogenes) disease has been a nationally notifiable disease in Canada since 2000. This report summarizes the demographics, emm types, and antimicrobial resistance of iGAS isolates collected in Canada in 2021 and 2022. Methods: The Public Health Agency of Canada’s National Microbiology Laboratory collaborates with provincial and territorial public health laboratories to conduct national surveillance of invasive S. pyogenes. Emm typing was performed using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention emm sequencing protocol or extracted from whole-genome sequencing data. Antimicrobial susceptibilities were determined using Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion according to Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines or predicted from whole-genome sequencing data based on the presence of resistance determinants. Results: Overall, the incidence of iGAS disease in Canada was 5.56 cases per 100,000 population in 2021, decreasing from the peak of 8.6 cases per 100,000 population in 2018. A total of 2,630 iGAS isolates were collected during 2022, representing an increase from 2021 (n=2,179). In particular, there was a large increase in isolates collected from October to December 2022. The most predominant emm type overall in 2021 and 2022 was emm49, at 21.5% (n=468) and 16.9% (n=444), respectively, representing a significant increase in prevalence since 2018 (p<0.0001). The former most prevalent type, emm1, increased from 0.5% (n=10) in 2021 to 4.8% (n=125) in 2022; similarly, emm12 increased from 1.0% (n=22) in 2021 to 5.8% (n=151) in 2022. These two types together accounted for almost 25% of isolates collected in late 2022 (October to December). Antimicrobial resistance rates in 2021 and 2022 included: 14.9%/14.1% erythromycin resistance, 4.8%/3.0% clindamycin resistance, and <1% chloramphenicol resistance. Conclusion: The increase of iGAS isolates collected in Canada is an important public health concern. Continued surveillance of iGAS is critical to monitor expanding emm types and antimicrobial resistance patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
