Abstract

An Optical Transition Radiation monitor has been developed for the proton beam-line of the T2K long base-line neutrino oscillation experiment. The monitor operates in the highly radioactive environment in proximity to the T2K target. It uses optical transition radiation, the light emitted from a thin metallic foil when the charged beam passes through it, to form a 2D image of a 30 GeV proton beam. One of its key features is an optical system capable of transporting the light over a large distance out of the harsh environment near the target to a lower radiation area where it is possible to operate a camera to capture this light. The monitor measures the proton beam position and width with a precision of better than 500 {\mu}m, meeting the physics requirements of the T2K experiment., Comment: 17 pages, 21 figures, Submitted to NIM A

6. Exploring Service Learning Outcomes in Students: A Mixed Methods Study for Nursing

Abstract

This mixed methods study exploring student outcomes of service learning experiences is inter-disciplinary, near the intersection of higher education research, moral development, and nursing. The specific problem examined in this study is that service learning among university students is utilized by educators, but largely without a full understanding of its effect upon students. The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore the change in affective rather than cognitive personal development characteristics pertaining to moral orientation and caring within nursing students following a service learning experience. The study consisted of a mixed methods approach, using a pre-test/post-test design for the quantitative portion of the study and interviews with students after they experience their service learning assignment in nursing within the qualitative part of the study. The research encompassed pre-post survey responses of nursing students from multiple campuses, before and after a clinical nursing service learning experience. In addition to survey responses, the data collected included focused interviews with students following their service learning experiences. The study drew theoretical foundations from two theories in the fields of nursing and moral development. The statistical analysis of survey findings, along with the qualitative analysis of rich and thick data emerging from the student interviews, revealed that when students have clinical experiences in the context of community service or public health, with an opportunity for reflection, they feel a growing sense of competency in nursing and confidence in finding their professional voice. Recommendations were made for sharpening the practice of service learning. More extensive and robust quantitative studies, some requiring funding, are needed to exceed purely isolated case studies and to ascertain outcomes across a more generalized population. 20. A theory of rapid evolutionary change explaining the de novo appearance of megakaryocytes and platelets in mammals

Abstract

Platelets are found only in mammals. Uniquely, they have a log Gaussian volume distribution and are produced from megakaryocytes, large cells that have polyploid nuclei. In this Hypothesis, we propose that a possible explanation for the origin of megakaryocytes and platelets is that, ∼220 million years ago, an inheritable change occurred in a mammalian ancestor that caused the haemostatic cell line of the animal to become polyploid. This inheritable change occurred specifically in the genetic programme of the cell lineage from which the haemostatic cell originated and led, because of increase in cell size, to its fragmentation into cytoplasmic particles (platelets) in the pulmonary circulatory system, as found in modern mammals. We hypothesize that these fragments originating from the new large haemostatic polyploid cells proved to be more efficient at stopping bleeding, and, therefore, the progeny of this ancestor prospered through natural selection. We also propose experimental strategies that could provide evidence to support this hypothesis.

In today's world, this mastery is truly a questionable goal. But understanding the conceptual infrastructure of the algorithm will add to students technological proficiency. The purpose of this article is to help readers reflect on the conceptual meaning buried within the division algorithm and to see how this understanding connects to students' prior knowledge. Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, 92, 205-216, The shift to total war, when mobilisation for the war effort became the overwhelming policy objective, imposed unprecedented levels of deprivation on the civilian population. Rather surprisingly, Britain, in general, and Hinckley in particular, did not suffer the social unrest which undermined the commitment to the war efforts in other countries. This article investigates why Hinckley, a market town in Leicestershire, continued to prosper during the war, and also the crucially important role played by the town's leaders in enabling its inhabitants to avoid the deprivation and social unrest which became increasingly evident during the latter stages of the First World War.

28. The Emergence and Functioning of District Relief Committees during the First World War: A Case Study of Hinckley, Leicestershire

Abstract

Transactions of the Leicestershire Archaeological and Historical Society, 90, 215-244, Very little is known about the operation of the District Relief Committee (DRC) and the role it played during the First World War. This article undertakes a pioneering investigation into its significance by means of a case study of the DRC as it operated in the town of Hinckley, Leicestershire, and which demonstrated the unsung role that the organisation played in mobilising and coordinating the war effort at a local level. An important discovery was that over time the committee evolved from a charitable organisation, run by local dignitaries and personalities, from the onset of the war to, by 1916, a professionally operated de facto local government department. The effect of this largely unknown network, which has merited scant attention from historians, was to enable the government both rapidly to acquire and disseminate local information vital to the war effort, with the provision of aniline dyes being one such example.

41. Female genital cutting and mother's age at birth are associated with the sex of offspring in Africa

Abstract

Female genital cutting (FGC) is widespread in Africa. Its short and long term medical consequences are widely reported. Here we report that FGC is associated with and may contribute to increases in the sex ratio at birth (Odds Ratio = 1.019; 95% C.I. = 1.007, 1.032) while mother's age at birth is inversely associated with probability of male birth (Odds Ratio = 0.998; 95% C.I. = 0.997, 0.999) in a generalized linear, logistic model with the probability of a male birth the dependent variable and eight potential explanatory variables applied to 413,384 births in 22 African countries. While these two associations are statistically significant, their odds ratios are close to 1.0 and they only slightly decrease the null deviance of the model. Therefore sex determination in these data is still a mostly stochastic process determined by the random variation in X or Y sperm production, transport, and conception.

Reperfusion injury is largely attributed to excess mitochondrial production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Sulfide inhibits mitochondria and reduces ROS production. Ammonium tetrathiomolybdate (ATTM), a copper chelator, releases sulfide in a controlled and novel manner, and may offer potential therapeutic utility. Methods and findings In vitro, ATTM releases sulfide in a time-, pH-, temperature-, and thiol-dependent manner. Controlled sulfide release from ATTM reduces metabolism (measured as oxygen consumption) both in vivo in awake rats and ex vivo in skeletal muscle tissue, with a superior safety profile compared to standard sulfide generators. Given intravenously at reperfusion/resuscitation to rats, ATTM significantly reduced infarct size following either myocardial or cerebral ischemia, and conferred survival benefit following severe hemorrhage. Mechanistic studies (in vitro anoxia/reoxygenation) demonstrated a mitochondrial site of action (decreased MitoSOX fluorescence), where the majority of damaging ROS is produced. Conclusions The inorganic thiometallate ATTM represents a new class of sulfide-releasing drugs. Our findings provide impetus for further investigation of this compound as a novel adjunct therapy for reperfusion injury.
