Context: In the context of Galactic archaeology, the outer halo remains relatively unexplored with respect to its metallicity distribution, merger debris, and the abundance of known very/extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]<-2.5) stars. Aim: We utilize the Pristine survey's publicly available, Pristine data release 1 (PDR1) and Pristine-Gaia synthetic (PGS) catalogues of photometric metallicities, to select Red Giant Branch (RGB) stars in the outer halo. Methods: The RGB selection pipeline selects giants based on the absence of a well-measured parallax in the brightness range where dwarfs have reasonable parallax estimate from Gaia DR3 data. The photometric distances are calculated using a BaSTI-isochrone fitting code and the photometric metallicities. Results: Photometric distances derived from PDR1- and PGS-giants show typical uncertainties of 12% and a scatter of up to 20% and 40% respectively, when validated against inverted-parallax and Starhorse-code distances. The PDR1-giants catalogue provides a low-to-no bias view of the metallicity structure versus distance compared to the PGS-giants catalogue (with a distance-metallicity selection bias), while the PGS-giants catalogue provides an all-sky view of the outer halo, especially in the VMP end. The PDR1-giants catalogue is used to study the metallicity distribution function of the halo out to ~100 kpc, using Gaussian Mixture Model decomposition. Additionally, we use the PDR1-giants with radial velocities from spectroscopic surveys to map the metallicity view of the integrals-of-motion space where accreted dwarf galaxy debris conserve their orbital parameters for a long time. Using the PGS-giants catalogue, we associate 41 stars tentatively to the stellar counterpart of the Magellanic stream in the VMP end, out to 70 kpc. Chord diagrams are used by guitar players to show where and how to play a chord on the fretboard. They are useful to beginners learning chords or for sharing the hand positions required to play a song.However, the diagrams presented on guitar learning toolsare usually selected from an existing databaseand rarely represent the actual positions used by performers.In this paper, we propose a tool which suggests a chord diagram for achord label,taking into account the diagram of the previous chord.Based on statistical analysis of the DadaGP and mySongBook datasets, we show that some chord diagrams are over-represented in western popular musicand that some chords can be played in more than 20 different ways.We argue that taking context into account can improve the variety and the quality of chord diagram suggestion, and compare this approach with a model taking only the current chord label into account.We show that adding previous context improves the F1-score on this task by up to 27% and reduces the propensity of the model to suggest standard open chords.We also define the notion of texture in the context of chord diagrams andshow through a variety of metrics that our model improves textureconsistencywith the previous diagram.

It underscores the need for concerted efforts to address shared challenges such as complexity management, scalability, evolvability, interdisciplinary collaboration, and ethical and environmental considerations. The framework defined by classifying materials based on their level of animacy can guide this emerging field encouraging cooperation and responsible development. By unravelling the mysteries of living matter and leveraging its principles, we can design materials and systems that will transform our world in a more sustainable manner.

We present $\sim300$ stellar metallicity measurements in two faint M31 dwarf galaxies, Andromeda XVI ($M_V = -7.5$) and Andromeda XXVIII ($M_V = -8.8$) derived using metallicity-sensitive Calcium H & K narrow-band Hubble Space Telescope imaging. These are the first individual stellar metallicities in And~XVI (95 stars). Our And~XXVIII sample (191 stars) is a factor of $\sim15$ increase over literature metallicities. For And~XVI, we measure $\langle \mbox{[Fe/H]}\rangle = -2.17^{+0.05}_{-0.05}$, $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}=0.33^{+0.07}_{-0.07}$, and $\nabla_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}} = -0.23\pm0.15$ dex $R_e^{-1}$. We find that And XVI is more metal-rich than MW UFDs of similar luminosity, which may be a result of its unusually extended star formation history. For And XXVIII, we measure $\langle \mbox{[Fe/H]}\rangle = -1.95^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$, $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}=0.34^{+0.07}_{-0.07}$, and $\nabla_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}} = -0.46 \pm 0.10$~dex~$R_e^{-1}$, placing it on the dwarf galaxy mass-metallicity relation. Neither galaxy has a metallicity distribution function with an abrupt metal-rich truncation, suggesting that star formation fell off gradually. The stellar metallicity gradient measurements are among the first for faint ($L \lesssim 10^6~L_{\odot}$) galaxies outside the Milky Way halo. Both galaxies' gradients are consistent with predictions from the FIRE simulations, where an age-gradient strength relationship is the observational consequence of stellar feedback that produces dark matter cores. Carbon abundances, especially at low metallicity, reveal the early chemical evolution of a system, tracing the supernovae (SNe) that contributed and how much of their ejecta made it into the next stellar generation. Our sample from the \textit{Pristine} Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) includes $\sim 350$ metal-poor ([Fe/H]~$<-1.5$) stars in the main body of Sgr with good quality spectroscopic observations. Our metal-poor Sgr population has a larger velocity dispersion than metal-rich Sgr from the literature, which could be explained by outside-in star formation, extreme Galactic tidal perturbations and/or the presence of a metal-rich disc/bar $+$ a metal-poor halo. The average carbon abundance in Sgr is similar to that of other classical dwarf galaxies (DGs) and consistently lower than in the Milky Way by $\sim0.2-0.3$~dex at low metallicity. The interstellar medium in DGs, including Sgr, may have retained yields from more energetic Pop III and II SNe, thereby reducing the average [C/Fe]. Additionally, SNe~Ia, producing more Fe than C, would start to contribute at lower metallicity in DGs/Sgr than in the Galaxy. The presence of a [C/Fe] gradient for Sgr stars with [Fe/H]~$\gtrsim-2.0$ ($\sim 6.8\times 10^{-4}$ dex arcmin$^{-1}$) suggests that SNe~Ia contributed in the system at those metallicities, especially in its inner regions. There is a low frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in our Sgr sample. At higher metallicity/carbon abundance (mostly CEMP-s) this may be due to photometric selection effects, but those are less likely to affect CEMP-no stars. We propose that, given the lower average [C/Fe] in DGs, using the same CEMP definition ([C/Fe]~$>+0.7$) as in the Galaxy under-predicts the number of CEMP stars in DGs, and for Sgr a cut at [C/Fe]$~\sim +0.35$ may be more appropriate, which brings the frequency of CEMP stars in agreement with that in the Galaxy., Comment: Submitted to A&A. 8 Figures. Through the chemodynamical characterisation of metal-poor stars, one can efficiently probe the early history of the Milky Way. We aim at decontaminating a sample of $\sim$ 3M giant stars with Gaia DR3 XP-based \textit{Pristine-Gaia} metallicities, to investigate a subset of very metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -1.7) with disc-like orbits. We construct a statistically robust sample of $\sim$ 36 000 very metal-poor giants, using APOGEE and LAMOST to estimate and remove contamination from high $V_\phi$ stars. We investigate the spatial and kinematic properties of the decontaminated sample, using $V_\phi$ and the action space, both powerful to disentangle stellar populations. As in previous works, we find a pronounced asymmetry in $L_z$ and $V_\phi$ in favour of prograde stars. This excess is mostly made of prograde-planar stars (10% of the very metal-poor population), and contains stars with $V_\phi$ > 180 km s$^{-1}$ and $Z_{\text{max}}$ < 1.5 kpc, down to [Fe/H] = -2.9 at a 2$\sigma$ confidence level. While the overall orbital distributions of our sample match that of a halo, the highly prograde and planar subset (2% of the very metal-poor population) also bears characteristics classically associated with a thick disc, i.e., a spatial distribution compatible with a short-scaled thick disc, and a thick disc-like $Z_{\text{max}}$ - $R_{\text{max}}$ distribution. Additionally, assuming a stationary or prograde halo with $\overline{V_\phi}$ $\sim$ 30-40 km.s$^{-1}$ is not sufficient to suppress the kinematic signature of the highly prograde and planar subset. The Pristine-\textit{Gaia} synthetic catalogue provides reliable photometric metallicities for $\sim$30 million FGK stars using the Pristine survey model and Gaia XP spectra. We perform the first low-to-medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up of bright (G<15) and distant (up to 35 kpc) very and extremely metal-poor (V/EMP, [Fe/H]<-2.5) red giant branch stars from this. We use Isaac Newton Telescope/Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph (INT/IDS) observations centred around the calcium triplet region ideal for V/EMP stars. We find that 76\% of our stars indeed have [Fe/H]<-2.5 with these inferred spectroscopic metallicities and only 3\% are outliers with [Fe/H] > -2.0. We report a success rate of 77\% and 38\% in finding stars with [Fe/H]<-2.5 and -3.0 respectively. This will allow for 10,000-20,000 homogeneously analysed EMP stars using the WEAVE survey follow-up of Pristine EMP candidates. We associate 20\%, 46\%, and 34\% of the stars to be confined to the disc plane, or to have inner and outer halo orbits, respectively. We also associate these V/EMP stars to known accretion events such as Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage (GES), LMS-1/Wukong, Thamnos, Helmi streams, Sagittarius, Sequoia, etc. For the stars that orbit close to the disc plane, we find that the prograde region with low vertical action is overdense with a significance of 4$\sigma$ as compared to its retrograde counterpart. We also find three new (brightest) members of the most metal-poor stellar stream, C-19, one of which is 50$^\circ$ away from the main body of the stream. Our measured mean metallicity, velocity dispersion, and stream width are consistent with the literature, but our results favour a higher distance ($\sim$21.5 kpc) for the stream. The most metal-poor stars provide valuable insights into the early chemical enrichment history of a system, carrying the chemical imprints of the first generations of supernovae. The most metal-poor region of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy remains inadequately observed and characterised. To date, only $\sim4$ stars with [Fe/H]~$<-2.0$ have been chemically analysed with high-resolution spectroscopy. In this study, we present the most extensive chemical abundance analysis of 12 low-metallicity stars with metallicities down to [Fe/H]~$=-3.26$ and located in the main body of Sagittarius. These targets, selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey, were observed using the MIKE high-resolution spectrograph at the {\it Magellan-Clay} telescope, which allowed us to measure up to 17 chemical species. The chemical composition of these stars reflects the imprint of a variety of type~II supernovae (SNe~II). A combination of low- to intermediate-mass high-energy SNe and hypernovae ($\sim10-70\msun$) is required to account for the abundance patterns of the lighter elements up to the Fe-peak. The trend of the heavy elements suggests the involvement of compact binary merger events and fast-rotating (up to $\sim300\kms$) intermediate-mass to massive metal-poor stars ($\sim25-120\msun$) that are the sources of rapid and slow processes, respectively. Additionally, asymptotic giant branch stars contribute to a wide dispersion of [Ba/Mg] and [Ba/Eu]. The absence of an $\alpha-$knee in our data indicates that type Ia supernovae did not contribute in the very metal-poor region ([Fe/H]~$\leq-2.0$). The Wide-field Spectroscopic Telescope (WST) is proposed as a new facility dedicated to the efficient delivery of spectroscopic surveys. This white paper summarises the initial concept as well as the corresponding science cases. WST will feature simultaneous operation of a large field-of-view (3 sq. degree), a high multiplex (20,000) multi-object spectrograph (MOS) and a giant 3x3 sq. arcmin integral field spectrograph (IFS). In scientific capability these requirements place WST far ahead of existing and planned facilities. Given the current investment in deep imaging surveys and noting the diagnostic power of spectroscopy, WST will fill a crucial gap in astronomical capability and work synergistically with future ground and space-based facilities. This white paper shows that WST can address outstanding scientific questions in the areas of cosmology; galaxy assembly, evolution, and enrichment, including our own Milky Way; origin of stars and planets; time domain and multi-messenger astrophysics. WST's uniquely rich dataset will deliver unforeseen discoveries in many of these areas. The emergence of the disc in our Galaxy and the relation of the thick and thin disc formation and evolution is still a matter of debate. The chemo-dynamical characterization of disc stars is key to resolve this question, in particular at parameter regimes where both disc components overlap, such as the region around [Fe/H] $\sim$ $-0.7$ corresponding to the thin disc metal-poor end. In this paper we re-assess the recent detection of a metal-poor extension of stars moving with thin-disc-like rotational velocities between -2 < [Fe/H] < -0.7 that was made based on metallicity estimates obtained from photometric data and their rotational velocity distribution. We explore the chemo-dynamical properties of metal-poor stars within the recent Gaia third data release (DR3), which includes the first catalogue of metallicity estimates from the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) experiment. We complement them with the two largest high-resolution ($\lambda/d\lambda$ > 20,000) spectroscopic surveys available, the GALAH DR3 and the APOGEE DR17. We confirm that there are high angular-momentum stars moving in thin-disc-like orbits, i.e., with high angular momentum $\rm L_{z}/J_{tot}$ > 0.95, and close to the Galactic plane, $\rm |Z_{max}|$ < 750 pc, reaching metallicity values down to [Fe/H] $\sim-1.5$. We also find tentative evidence of stars moving on such orbits at lower metallicities, down to [Fe/H] $\sim -2.5$, although in smaller numbers. Based on their chemical trends the fast rotators with [Fe/H] < -1 would have formed in a medium less chemically evolved than the bulk of the thick disc. We measure the metallicities of 374 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the isolated, quenched dwarf galaxy Tucana using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) narrow-band (F395N) Calcium H & K (CaHK) imaging. Our sample is a factor of $\sim7$ larger than what is published. Our main findings are: (i) A global metallicity distribution function (MDF) with $\langle \mbox{[Fe/H]} \rangle = -1.55 \pm 0.04$ and $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}=0.54\pm0.03$; (ii) A metallicity gradient of $-0.54 \pm 0.07$ dex $R_e^{-1}$ ($-2.1 \pm 0.3$ dex kpc$^{-1}$) over the extent of our imaging ($\sim 2.5 R_e$), which is steeper than literature measurements. Our finding is consistent with predicted gradients from the publicly-available FIRE-2 simulations, in which bursty star formation creates stellar population gradients and dark matter cores; (iii) Tucana's bifurcated RGB has distinct metallicities: a blue RGB with $\langle \mbox{[Fe/H]} \rangle = -1.78 \pm 0.06$ and $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}=0.44^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$, and a red RGB with $\langle \mbox{[Fe/H]} \rangle = -1.08 \pm 0.07$ and $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}=0.42 \pm 0.06$; (iv) At fixed stellar mass, Tucana is more MR than MW satellites by $\sim 0.4$ dex, but its blue RGB is chemically comparable to the satellites. Tucana's MDF appears consistent with star-forming isolated dwarfs, though MDFs of the latter are not as well-populated; (v) $\sim2$% of Tucana's stars have $\mbox{[Fe/H]} < -3$ and 20% $\mbox{[Fe/H]} > -1$. The oldest stars in the Milky Way (born in the first few billion years) are expected to have a high density in the inner few kpc, spatially overlapping with the Galactic bulge. We use spectroscopic data from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS) to study the dynamical properties of ancient, metal-poor inner Galaxy stars. We compute distances using StarHorse, and orbital properties in a barred Galactic potential. With this paper, we release the spectroscopic AAT/PIGS catalogue (13 235 stars). We find that most PIGS stars have orbits typical for a pressure-supported population. The fraction of stars confined to the inner Galaxy decreases with decreasing metallicity, but many very metal-poor stars (VMP, [Fe/H] < -2.0) stay confined (~ 60% stay within 5 kpc). The azimuthal velocity v$_\phi$ also decreases between [Fe/H] = -1.0 and -2.0, but is constant for VMP stars (at ~ 40 km/s). The carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars in PIGS appear to have similar orbital properties compared to normal VMP stars. Our results suggest a possible transition between two spheroidal components - a more metal-rich, more concentrated, faster rotating component, and a more metal-poor, more extended and slower/non-rotating component. We propose that the former may be connected to pre-disc in-situ stars (or those born in large building blocks), whereas the latter may be dominated by contributions from smaller galaxies. The most metal-poor tail of the Milky Way ([Fe/H] $\leq$ $-$2.5) contains a population of stars with very prograde planar orbits, which is puzzling in both their origin and evolution. A possible scenario is that they are shepherded by the bar from the inner Galaxy, where many of the old and low-metallicity stars in the Galaxy are located. To investigate this scenario, we use test-particle simulations with an axisymmetric background potential plus a central bar model. The test particles are generated by an extended distribution function (EDF) model based on the observational constraints of bulge stars. According to the simulation results, a bar with constant pattern speed cannot help bring stars from the bulge to the solar vicinity. In contrast, when the model includes a rapidly decelerating bar, some bulge stars can gain rotation and move outwards as they are trapped in the co-rotation regions of the bar. The resulting distribution of shepherded stars heavily depends on the present-day azimuthal angle between the bar and the Sun. The majority of the low-metallicity bulge stars driven outwards are distributed in the fourth quadrant of the Galaxy with respect to the Sun, and about 10$\%$ of them are within 6 kpc from us. Our experiments indicate that the decelerating bar perturbation can be a contributing process to explain part of the most metal-poor stars with prograde planar orbits seen in the Solar neighborhood but is unlikely to be the dominant one., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to A&A

We present the discovery of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1, the least luminous known satellite of the Milky Way, which is estimated to have an absolute V-band magnitude of $+2.2^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$ mag, equivalent to a total stellar mass of 16$^{+6}_{-5}$ M$_{\odot}$. Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 was uncovered in the deep, wide-field Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) and is consistent with an old ($\tau > 11$ Gyr), metal-poor ([Fe/H] $\sim -2.2$) stellar population at a heliocentric distance of $\sim$ 10 kpc. Despite being compact ($r_{\text{h}} = 3\pm1$ pc) and composed of so few stars, we confirm the reality of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 with Keck II/DEIMOS follow-up spectroscopy and identify 11 radial velocity members, 8 of which have full astrometric data from $Gaia$ and are co-moving based on their proper motions. Based on these 11 radial velocity members, we derive an intrinsic velocity dispersion of $3.7^{+1.4}_{-1.0}$ km s$^{-1}$ but some caveats preclude this value from being interpreted as a direct indicator of the underlying gravitational potential at this time. Primarily, the exclusion of the largest velocity outlier from the member list drops the velocity dispersion to $1.9^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ km s$^{-1}$, and the subsequent removal of an additional outlier star produces an unresolved velocity dispersion. While the presence of binary stars may be inflating the measurement, the possibility of a significant velocity dispersion makes Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 a high priority candidate for multi-epoch spectroscopic follow-ups to deduce to true nature of this incredibly faint satellite., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

The most metal-poor stars (e.g. [Fe/H] $\leq-2.5$) are the ancient fossils from the early assembly epoch of our Galaxy, very likely before the formation of the thick disc. Recent studies have shown that a non-negligible fraction of them have prograde planar orbits, which makes their origin a puzzle. It has been suggested that a later-formed rotating bar could have driven these old stars from the inner Galaxy outward, and transformed their orbits to be more rotation-dominated. However, it is not clear if this mechanism can explain these stars as observed in the solar neighborhood. In this paper, we explore the possibility of this scenario by tracing these stars backwards in an axisymmetric Milky Way potential with a bar perturber. We integrate their orbits backward for 6 Gyr under two bar models: one with a constant pattern speed and another one with a decelerating speed. Our experiments show that, under the constantly-rotating bar model, the stars of interest are little affected by the bar and cannot have been shepherded from a spheroidal inner Milky Way to their current orbits. In the extreme case of a rapidly decelerating bar, some of the very metal-poor stars on planar and prograde orbits can be brought from the inner Milky Way, but $\sim90\%$ of them were nevertheless already rotation-dominated ($J_{\phi}$ $\geq$ 1000 km s$^{-1}$ kpc) 6 Gyr ago. The chance of these stars having started with spheroid-like orbits with small rotation ($J_{\phi}$ $\lesssim$ 600 km s$^{-1}$ kpc) is very low ($<$ 3$\%$). We therefore conclude that, within the solar neighborhood, the bar is unlikely to have shepherded a significant fraction of inner Galaxy spheroid stars to produce the overdensity of stars on prograde, planar orbits that is observed today., Comment: submitted to A&A, comments are welcome

Chirality is inherent to a broad range of systems, including in solid-state and wave physics. The precession (chiral motion) of electron spins in magnetic materials, forming spin waves, has various properties and many applications in magnetism and spintronics. We show that an optical analog of spin waves can be generated in arrays of plasmonic nanohelices. Such optical waves arise from the interaction between chiral helix eigenmodes carrying spin angular momentum. We demonstrate that these optical spin waves are reflected at the interface between successive domains of enantiomeric nanohelices, forming a heterochiral lattice, regardless of the wave propagation direction within the lattice. Optical spin waves may be applied in techniques involving photon spin, ranging from data processing and storage to quantum optics.

Pristine_183.6849+04.8619 (P1836849) is an extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H]$=-3.3\pm0.1$) star on a prograde orbit confined to the Galactic disk. Such stars are rare and may have their origins in protogalactic fragments that formed the early Milky Way, in low mass satellites accreted later, or forming in situ in the Galactic plane. Here we present a chemo-dynamical analysis of the spectral features between $3700-11000$\r{A} from a high-resolution spectrum taken during Science Verification of the new Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST). Spectral features for many chemical elements are analysed (Mg, Al, Si, Ca, Sc, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni), and valuable upper limits are determined for others (C, Na, Sr, Ba). This main sequence star exhibits several rare chemical signatures, including (i) extremely low metallicity for a star in the Galactic disk, (ii) very low abundances of the light $\alpha$-elements (Na, Mg, Si) compared to other metal-poor stars, and (iii) unusually large abundances of Cr and Mn, where [Cr, Mn/Fe]$_{\rm NLTE}>+0.5$. A comparison to theoretical yields from supernova models suggests that two low mass Population III objects (one 10 M$_\odot$ supernova and one 17 M$_\odot$ hypernova) can reproduce the abundance pattern well (reduced $\chi^2<1$). When this star is compared to other extremely metal-poor stars on quasi-circular, prograde planar orbits, differences in both chemistry and kinematics imply there is little evidence for a common origin. There is a bias in the inference pipeline of most diffusion models. This bias arises from a signal leak whose distribution deviates from the noise distribution, creating a discrepancy between training and inference processes. We demonstrate that this signal-leak bias is particularly significant when models are tuned to a specific style, causing sub-optimal style matching. Recent research tries to avoid the signal leakage during training. We instead show how we can exploit this signal-leak bias in existing diffusion models to allow more control over the generated images. This enables us to generate images with more varied brightness, and images that better match a desired style or color. By modeling the distribution of the signal leak in the spatial frequency and pixel domains, and including a signal leak in the initial latent, we generate images that better match expected results without any additional training., Comment: corrected the author names in reference [24]

Context. Gaia DR3 has offered the scientific community a remarkable dataset of approximately one million spectra acquired with the Radial Velocity Spectrometer (RVS) in the Calcium II triplet region, that is well-suited to identify very metal-poor (VMP) stars. However, over 40% of these spectra have no released parameters by Gaia's GSP Spec pipeline in the domain of VMP stars, whereas VMP stars are key tracers of early Galactic evolution. Aims. We aim to provide spectroscopic metallicities for VMP stars using Gaia RVS spectra, thereby producing a catalogue of bright VMP stars distributed over the full sky that can serve as the basis to study early chemical evolution throughout the Galaxy. Methods. We select VMP stars using photometric metallicities from the literature and analyse the Gaia RVS spectra to infer spectroscopic metallicities for these stars. Results. The inferred metallicities agree very well with literature high-resolution metallicities with a median systematic offset of 0.1 dex and standard deviation of $\sim$0.15 dex. The purity of this sample in the VMP regime is $\sim$80% with outliers representing a mere $\sim$3%. Conclusions. We make available an all-sky catalogue of $\sim$1500 stars with reliable spectroscopic metallicities down to [Fe/H]$\sim$-4.0, of which $\sim$1000 are VMP stars. More than 75% of these stars have either no metallicity value in the literature to date or are flagged to be unreliable in their literature metallicity estimates. This study focuses on Pristine$\_180956.78$$-$$294759.8$ (hereafter P180956, $[Fe/H] =-1.95\pm0.02$), a star selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey (PIGS), and followed-up with the recently commissioned Gemini High-resolution Optical SpecTrograph (GHOST) at the Gemini South telescope. The GHOST spectrograph's high efficiency in the blue spectral region ($3700-4800$~\AA) enables the detection of elemental tracers of early supernovae (\eg Al, Mn, Sr, Eu). The star exhibits chemical signatures resembling those found in ultra-faint dwarf systems, characterised by very low abundances of neutron-capture elements (Sr, Ba, Eu), which are uncommon among stars in the Milky Way halo. Our analysis suggests that P180956 bears the chemical imprints of a small number (2 or 4) of low-mass hypernovae ($\sim10-15 M_{\odot}$), which are needed to mostly reproduce the abundance pattern of the light-elements (\eg [Si, Ti/Mg, Ca] $\sim0.6$), and one fast-rotating intermediate-mass supernova ($\sim300\kms$, $\sim80-120 M_{\odot}$), which is the main channel contributing to the high [Sr/Ba] ($\sim +1.2$). The small pericentric ($\sim0.7$ kpc) and apocentric ($\sim13$ kpc) distances and its orbit confined to the plane ($\lesssim 2$ kpc), indicate that this star was likely accreted during the early Galactic assembly phase. Its chemo-dynamical properties suggest that P180956 formed in a system similar to an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy accreted either alone, as one of the low-mass building blocks of the proto-Galaxy, or as a satellite of Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus. We use the spectro-photometric information of ~219 million stars from Gaia's DR3 to calculate synthetic, narrow-band, metallicity-sensitive CaHK magnitudes that mimic the observations of the Pristine survey, a survey of photometric metallicities of Milky Way stars that has been mapping more than 6,500 deg^2 of the northern sky with the CFHT since 2015. These synthetic magnitudes are used for an absolute re-calibration of the deeper Pristine photometry and, combined with broadband Gaia information, synthetic and Pristine CaHK magnitudes are used to estimate photometric metallicities over the whole sky. The resulting metallicity catalogue is accurate down to [Fe/H]~-3.5 and is particularly suited for the exploration of the metal-poor Milky Way ([Fe/H]<-1.0). We make available here the catalogue of synthetic CaHK_syn magnitudes for all stars with BP/RP information in Gaia DR3, as well as an associated catalogue of more than ~30 million photometric metallicities for high S/N FGK stars. This paper further provides the first public DR of the Pristine catalogue in the form of higher quality recalibrated Pristine CaHK magnitudes and photometric metallicities for all stars in common with the BP/RP information in Gaia DR3. We demonstrate that, when available, the much deeper Pristine data greatly enhances the quality of the derived metallicities, in particular at the faint end of the catalogue (G_BP>16). Combined, both catalogues include more than 2 million metal-poor star candidates as well as more than 200,000 and ~8,000 very and extremely metal-poor candidates. Finally, we show that these metallicity catalogues can be used efficiently, among other applications, for Galactic archaeology, to hunt for the most metal-poor stars, and to study how the structure of the Milky Way varies with metallicity, from the flat distribution of disk stars to the spheroid-shaped metal-poor halo. We present uniformly measured stellar metallicities for 463 stars in 13 Milky Way (MW) ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs; $M_V = -7.1$ to $-0.8$) using narrowband CaHK (F395N) imaging taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This represents the largest homogeneous set of stellar metallicities in UFDs, increasing the number of metallicities in these 13 galaxies by a factor of 5 and doubling the number of metallicities in all known MW UFDs. We provide the first well-populated MDFs for all galaxies in this sample, with [Fe/H] ranging from -3.0 dex to -2.0 dex, and $\sigma_{\mbox{[Fe/H]}}$ ranging from 0.3 dex to 0.7 dex. We find a nearly constant [Fe/H] ~ -2.6 over 3 decades in luminosity (~$10^2 - 10^5 L_{\odot}$), suggesting that the mass-metallicity relationship does not hold for such faint systems. We find a larger fraction (24%) of EMP ([Fe/H]<-3.0) stars across our sample compared to the literature (14%), but note that uncertainties in our most metal-poor measurements make this an upper limit. We find 19% of stars in our UFD sample to be metal-rich ([Fe/H]>-2.0), consistent with the sum of literature spectroscopic studies. MW UFDs are known to be predominantly >13 Gyr old, meaning that all stars in our sample are truly ancient, unlike metal-poor stars in the MW, which have a range of possible ages. Our UFD metallicities are not well-matched to known streams in the MW, providing further evidence that known MW substructures are not related to UFDs. We present a new spectroscopic study of the dwarf galaxy Hercules (d ~ 132 kpc) with data from the Anglo-Australian Telescope and its AAOmega spectrograph together with the Two Degree Field multi-object system to solve the conundrum that whether Hercules is tidally disrupting. We combine broadband photometry, proper motions from Gaia, and our Pristine narrow-band and metallicity-sensitive photometry to efficiently weed out the Milky Way contamination. Such cleaning is particularly critical in this kinematic regime, as both the transverse and heliocentric velocities of Milky Way populations overlap with Hercules. Thanks to this method, three new member stars are identified, including one at almost 10rh of the satellite. All three have velocities and metallicities consistent with that of the main body. Combining this new dataset with the entire literature cleaned out from contamination shows that Hercules does not exhibit a velocity gradient (d/dX = 0.1+0.4/-0.2 km s-1 arcmin-1) and, as such, does not show evidence to undergo tidal disruption.

We build a statistical framework to infer the global properties of the satellite system of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) from the properties of individual dwarf galaxies located in the Pan-Andromeda Archaelogical Survey (PAndAS) and the previously determined completeness of the survey. Using forward modeling, we infer the slope of the luminosity function of the satellite system, the slope of its spatial density distribution, and the size-luminosity relation followed by the dwarf galaxies. We find that the slope of the luminosity function is $\beta=-1.5\pm0.1$. Combined with the spatial density profile, it implies that, when accounting for survey incompleteness, M31 hosts $92_{-26}^{+19}$ dwarf galaxies with $M_\textrm{V}<-5.5$ and a sky-projected distance from M31 between 30 and 300kpc. We conclude that many faint or distant dwarf galaxies remain to be discovered around Andromeda, especially outside the PAndAS footprint. Finally, we use our model to test if the higher number of satellites situated in the hemisphere facing the Milky Way could be explained simply by the detection limits of dwarf galaxy searches. We rule this out at $>99.9\%$ confidence and conclude that this anisotropy is an intrinsic feature of the M31 satellite system. One of the primary goals when studying galaxy formation is to understand how the luminous component of the Universe, galaxies, relates to the growth of structure which is dominated by the gravitational collapse of dark matter haloes. The stellar-to-halo mass relation probes how galaxies occupy dark matter haloes and what that entails for their star formation history. We deliver the first self-consistent empirical model that can place constraints on the stellar-to-halo mass relation down to log stellar mass $\log_{10}(m^*/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) \leq 5.0$ by fitting our model directly to Local Group dwarf data. This is accomplished by penalising galaxy growth in late-forming, low-mass haloes by mimicking the effects of reionization. This process serves to regulate the number density of galaxies by altering the scatter in halo peak mass $M^{\mathrm{peak}}_{h}$ at fixed stellar mass, creating a tighter scatter than would otherwise exist without a high-$z$ quenching mechanism. Our results indicate that the previously established double-power law stellar-to-halo mass relation can be extended to include galaxies with $\log_{10}(M^{\mathrm{peak}}_{\mathrm{h}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})\gtrsim 10.0$. Furthermore, we show that haloes with $\log_{10}(M^{\mathrm{peak}}_{\mathrm{h}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot})\lesssim 9.3$ by $z=4$ are unlikely to host a galaxy with $\log_{10}(m^*/\mathrm{M}_{\odot}) > 5.0$., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultra metal-poor stars ([Fe/H] < -4.0) are very rare, and finding them is a challenging task. Both narrow-band photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy have been useful tools for identifying candidates, and in this work we combine both approaches. We cross-matched metallicity-sensitive photometry from the Pristine survey with the low-resolution spectroscopic LAMOST database, and re-analysed all LAMOST spectra with [Fe/H]_Pristine < -2.5. We find that ~1/3rd of this sample (selected without [Fe/H]_Pristine quality cuts) also have spectroscopic [Fe/H] < -2.5. From this sample, containing many low signal-to-noise (S/N) spectra, we selected eleven stars potentially having [Fe/H] < -4.0 or [Fe/H] < -3.0 with very high carbon abundances, and we performed higher S/N medium-resolution spectroscopic follow-up with OSIRIS on the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We confirm their extremely low metallicities, with a mean of [Fe/H] = -3.4 and the most metal-poor star having [Fe/H]= -3.8. Three of these are clearly carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with +1.65 < [C/Fe] < +2.45. The two most carbon-rich stars are either among the most metal-poor CEMP-s stars or the most carbon-rich CEMP-no stars known, the third is likely a CEMP-no star. We derived orbital properties for the OSIRIS sample and find that only one of our targets can be confidently associated with known substructures/accretion events, and that three out of four inner halo stars have prograde orbits. Large spectroscopic surveys may contain many hidden extremely and ultra metal-poor stars, and adding additional information from e.g. photometry as in this work can uncover them more efficiently and confidently., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We predict the dwarf galaxy detection limits for the upcoming Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST) survey that will cover 17,500 deg$^{2}$ of the sky with a wide field of view of 1.1 deg$^2$. The point-source depth reaches 26.3 mag in the $g$ band and 25.9 mag in the $i$ band. Constructing mock survey data based on the designed photometric bands, we estimate the recovery rate of artificial dwarf galaxies from mock point-source photometric catalogues. The detection of these artificial dwarf galaxies is strongly dependent on their distance, magnitude and size, in agreement with searches in current surveys. We expect CSST to enable the detection of dwarf galaxies with $M_V = -3.0$ and $\mu_{250} = 32.0$ mag/arcsec$^2$ (surface-brightness limit for a system of half-light radius $r_{\rm h}$ = 250 pc at 400 kpc, and $M_V = -4.9$ and $\mu_{250} = 30.5$ mag/arcsec$^2$ around the Andromeda galaxy. Beyond the Local Group, the CSST survey will achieve $M_V = -5.8$, and $\mu_{250}$ = 29.7 mag/arcsec$^2$ in the distance range of 1--2 Mpc, opening up an exciting discovery space for faint field dwarf galaxies. With its optical bands, wide survey footprint, and space resolution, CSST will undoubtedly expand our knowledge of low-mass dwarf galaxies to an unprecedented volume., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures. WEAVE, the new wide-field, massively multiplexed spectroscopic survey facility for the William Herschel Telescope, will see first light in late 2022. WEAVE comprises a new 2-degree field-of-view prime-focus corrector system, a nearly 1000-multiplex fibre positioner, 20 individually deployable 'mini' integral field units (IFUs), and a single large IFU. These fibre systems feed a dual-beam spectrograph covering the wavelength range 366$-$959\,nm at $R\sim5000$, or two shorter ranges at $R\sim20\,000$. After summarising the design and implementation of WEAVE and its data systems, we present the organisation, science drivers and design of a five- to seven-year programme of eight individual surveys to: (i) study our Galaxy's origins by completing Gaia's phase-space information, providing metallicities to its limiting magnitude for $\sim$3 million stars and detailed abundances for $\sim1.5$ million brighter field and open-cluster stars; (ii) survey $\sim0.4$ million Galactic-plane OBA stars, young stellar objects and nearby gas to understand the evolution of young stars and their environments; (iii) perform an extensive spectral survey of white dwarfs; (iv) survey $\sim400$ neutral-hydrogen-selected galaxies with the IFUs; (v) study properties and kinematics of stellar populations and ionised gas in $z<0.5$ cluster galaxies; (vi) survey stellar populations and kinematics in $\sim25\,000$ field galaxies at $0.3\lesssim z \lesssim 0.7$; (vii) study the cosmic evolution of accretion and star formation using $>1$ million spectra of LOFAR-selected radio sources; (viii) trace structures using intergalactic/circumgalactic gas at $z>2$. We present a new suite of cosmological zoom-in hydrodynamical ($\approx 20\, \mathrm{pc}$ spatial resolution) simulations of Milky-Way mass galaxies to study how a varying mass ratio for a Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) progenitor impacts the $z=0$ chemodynamics of halo stars. Using the genetic modification approach, we create five cosmological histories for a Milky-Way-mass dark matter halo ($M_{200} \approx 10^{12} \, M_\mathrm{\odot}$), incrementally increasing the stellar mass ratio of a $z\approx2$ merger from 1:25 to 1:2, while fixing the galaxy's final dynamical, stellar mass and large-scale environment. We find markedly different morphologies at $z=0$ following this change in early history, with a growing merger resulting in increasingly compact and bulge-dominated galaxies. Despite this structural diversity, all galaxies show a radially-biased population of inner halo stars like the Milky-Way's GSE which, surprisingly, has a similar magnitude, age, $\rm [Fe/H]$ and $\rm [\alpha/Fe]$ distribution whether the $z\approx2$ merger is more minor or major. This arises because a smaller ex-situ population at $z\approx2$ is compensated by a larger population formed in an earlier merger-driven starburst whose contribution to the GES can grow dynamically over time, with both populations strongly overlapping in the $\rm [Fe/H]-\rm [\alpha/Fe]$ plane. Our study demonstrates that multiple high-redshift histories can lead to similar $z=0$ chemodynamical features in the halo, highlighting the need for additional constraints to distinguish them, and the importance of considering the full spectrum of progenitors when interpreting $z=0$ data to reconstruct our Galaxy's past., Comment: Matching accepted version after minor changes

Although diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) were discovered over 100 years ago, for most of them, their origins are still unknown. Investigation on the correlations between different DIBs is an important way to study the behavior and distributions of their carriers. Based on stacking thousands of spectra from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey, we study the correlations between two DIBs at 442.8 nm ($\lambda$442.8) and 862.1 nm ($\lambda$862.1), as well as the dust grains, in a range of latitude spanning ${\sim}22^{\circ}$ ($4^{\circ}\,{<}\,|b|\,{<}\,15^{\circ}$) toward the Galactic center ($|\ell|\,{<}\,11^{\circ}$). Tight linear intensity correlations can be found between $\lambda$442.8, $\lambda$862.1, and dust grains for $|b|\,{<}\,12^{\circ}$ or $E(B-V)\,{>}\,0.3$ mag. For $|b|\,{>}\,12^{\circ}$, $\lambda$442.8 and $\lambda$862.1 present larger relative strength with respect to the dust grains. A systematic variation of the relative strength between $\lambda$442.8 and $\lambda$862.1 with $|b|$ and $E(B-V)$ concludes that the two DIBs do not share a common carrier. Furthermore, the carrier of $\lambda$862.1 is more abundant at high latitudes than that of $\lambda$442.8. Andromeda (And) XXV has previously been reported as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) with little-to-no dark matter. However, the uncertainties on this result were significant. In this study, we double the number of member stars and re-derive the kinematics and mass of And XXV. We find that And XXV has a systemic velocity of $\nu_\mathrm{r}=-107.7\pm1.0 \mathrm{~km s}^{-1}$ and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_\nu=4.5\pm1.0\mathrm{~km s}^{-1}$. With this better constrained velocity dispersion, we derive a mass contained within the half-light radius of $M(r< r_\mathrm{h})=6.9^{+3.2}_{-2.8}\times10^6\mathrm{~M}_\odot$. This mass corresponds to a mass-to-light ratio of $\mathrm{[M/L]}_\mathrm{r_\mathrm{h}}=37^{+17}_{-15}\mathrm{~M}_\odot/\mathrm{L}_\odot$, demonstrating, for the first time, that And XXV has an unambiguous dark matter component. We also measure the metallicity of And XXV to be $\mathrm{[Fe/H]}=-1.9\pm0.1$$\mathrm{~}$dex, which is in agreement with previous results. Finally, we extend the analysis of And XXV to include mass modelling using GravSphere. We find that And XXV has a low central dark matter density, $\rho_\mathrm{DM}(150\mathrm{pc})= 2.7^{+1.8}_{-1.6}\times10^7\mathrm{~M}_\odot\mathrm{kpc}^{-3}$, making And XXV a clear outlier when compared to other Local Group (LG) dSphs of the similar stellar mass. Crop management, including nitrogen (N) fertilization and irrigation management, has a significant impact on the crop yield, economic profit, and the environment. Although management guidelines exist, it is challenging to find the optimal management practices given a specific planting environment and a crop. Previous work used reinforcement learning (RL) and crop simulators to solve the problem, but the trained policies either have limited performance or are not deployable in the real world. In this paper, we present an intelligent crop management system which optimizes the N fertilization and irrigation simultaneously via RL, imitation learning (IL), and crop simulations using the Decision Support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT). We first use deep RL, in particular, deep Q-network, to train management policies that require all state information from the simulator as observations (denoted as full observation). We then invoke IL to train management policies that only need a limited amount of state information that can be readily obtained in the real world (denoted as partial observation) by mimicking the actions of the previously RL-trained policies under full observation. We conduct experiments on a case study using maize in Florida and compare trained policies with a maize management guideline in simulations. Our trained policies under both full and partial observations achieve better outcomes, resulting in a higher profit or a similar profit with a smaller environmental impact. Moreover, the partial-observation management policies are directly deployable in the real world as they use readily available information.

We present the discovery of Bo\"otes V, a new ultra-faint dwarf galaxy candidate. This satellite is detected as a resolved overdensity of stars during an ongoing search for new Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates in the UNIONS photometric dataset. It has a physical half-light radius of 26.9$^{+7.5}_{-5.4}$ pc, a $V$-band magnitude of $-$4.5 $\pm$ 0.4 mag, and resides at a heliocentric distance of approximately 100 kpc. We use Gaia DR3 astrometry to identify member stars, characterize the systemic proper motion, and confirm the reality of this faint stellar system. The brightest star in this system was followed up using Gemini GMOS-N long-slit spectroscopy and is measured to have a metallicity of [Fe/H] $=$ $-$2.85 $\pm$ 0.10 dex and a heliocentric radial velocity of $v_r$ = 5.1 $\pm$ 13.4 km s$^{-1}$. Bo\"otes V is larger (in terms of scale radius), more distant, and more metal-poor than the vast majority of globular clusters. It is likely that Bo\"otes V is an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy, though future spectroscopic studies will be necessary to definitively classify this object., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. The investigation of the metal-poor tail in the Galactic bulge provides unique information on the early Milky Way assembly and evolution. A chemo-dynamical analysis of 17 very metal-poor stars (VMP, [Fe/H] $<-2.0$) selected from the Pristine Inner Galaxy Survey was carried out based on Gemini/GRACES spectra. The chemistry suggests that the majority of our stars are very similar to metal-poor stars in the Galactic halo. Orbits calculated from {\it Gaia} EDR3 imply these stars are brought into the bulge during the earliest Galactic assembly. Most of our stars have large [Na,Ca/Mg] abundances, and thus show little evidence of enrichment by pair-instability supernovae. Two of our stars (P171457, P184700) have chemical abundances compatible with second-generation globular cluster stars, suggestive of the presence of ancient and now dissolved globular clusters in the inner Galaxy. One of them (P171457) is extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] $<-3.0$) and well below the metallicity floor of globular clusters, which supports the growing evidence for the existence of lower-metallicity globular clusters in the early Universe. A third star (P180956, [Fe/H] $\sim-2$) has low [Na,Ca/Mg] and very low [Ba/Fe] for its metallicity, which are consistent with formation in a system polluted by only one or a few low-mass supernovae. By reinforcing the interaction energy of the liquid with respect to the surface using total wetting boundary conditions, the response of liquids to mechanical shear stress is stronger and exhibits at sub-millimeter scale elastic properties. This study extends here to liquids with strong electrostatic interactions such as ionic liquids and paramagnetic liquids. We show that it is also possible to identify and measure a non-zero low-frequency shear elasticity at sub-millimeter scale. The observation of mesoscopic elastic properties in liquids generally considered as viscous away from any phase transition and the absence of extended structuring confirm the relevance of considering elastic interactions as contributing to collective effects under external electric or magnetic field.

We report on the discovery in the Gaia DR3 astrometric and spectroscopic catalog of a new polar stream that is found as an over-density in action space. This structure is unique as it has an extremely large apocenter distance, reaching beyond 100 kpc, and yet is detected as a coherent moving structure in the Solar neighborhood with a width of $\sim 4$ kpc. A sub-sample of these stars that was fortuitously observed by LAMOST has a mean spectroscopic metallicity of $\langle {\rm [Fe/H]}\rangle = -1.60^{+0.15}_{-0.16}$ dex and possesses a resolved metallicity dispersion of $\sigma({\rm [Fe/H]}) = 0.32^{+0.17}_{-0.06}$ dex. The physical width of the stream, the metallicity dispersion and the vertical action spread indicate that the progenitor was a dwarf galaxy. The existence of such a coherent and highly radial structure at their pericenters in the vicinity of the Sun suggests that many other dwarf galaxy fragments may be lurking in the outer halo., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. We present the discovery of a wide retrograde moving group in the disk plane of the Milky Way using action-angle coordinates derived from the \textit{Gaia} DR3 catalog. The structure is identified from a sample of its members that are currently almost at the pericenter of their orbit and are passing through the Solar neighborhood. The motions of the stars in this group are highly correlated, indicating that the system is probably not phase mixed. With a width of at least 1.5 kpc and with a probable intrinsic spread in metallicity, this structure is most likely the wide remnant of a tidal stream of a disrupted ancient dwarf galaxy (age $\sim 12$ Gyr, $\langle {\rm [Fe/H]} \rangle \sim -1.74$). The structure presents many similarities (e.g. in energy, angular momentum, metallicity, and eccentricity) with the Sequoia merging event. However, it possesses extremely low vertical action $J_z$ which makes it unique even amongst Sequoia dynamical groups. As the low $J_z$ may be attributable to dynamical friction, we speculate that the these stars may be the remnants of the dense core of the Sequoia progenitor., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table. Carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars are a unique resource for Galactic archaeology because they probe the properties of the First Stars, early chemical evolution and binary interactions at very low metallicity. Comparing the fractions and properties of CEMP stars in different Galactic environments can provide us with unique insights into the formation and evolution of the Milky Way halo and its building blocks. In this work, we investigate whether directly comparing fractions of CEMP stars from different literature samples of very metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -2.0) stars is valid. We compiled published CEMP fractions and samples of Galactic halo stars from the past 25 years, and find that they are not all consistent with each other. Focusing on giant stars, we find significant differences between various surveys when comparing their trends of [Fe/H] versus [C/Fe] and their distributions of CEMP stars. To test the role of the analysis pipelines for low-resolution spectroscopic samples, we re-analysed giant stars from various surveys with the SSPP and FERRE pipelines. We found systematic differences in [C/Fe] of ~0.1-0.4 dex, partly independent of degeneracies with the stellar atmospheric parameters. These systematics are likely due to the different pipeline approaches, different assumptions in the employed synthetic grids, and/or the comparison of different evolutionary phases. We conclude that current biases in (the analysis of) very metal-poor samples limit the conclusions one can draw from comparing different surveys. We measure homogeneous distances to M31 and 38 associated stellar systems ($-$16.8$\le M_V \le$ $-$6.0), using time-series observations of RR Lyrae stars taken as part of the Hubble Space Telescope Treasury Survey of M31 Satellites. From $>700$ orbits of new/archival ACS imaging, we identify $>4700$ RR Lyrae stars and determine their periods and mean magnitudes to a typical precision of 0.01 days and 0.04 mag. Based on Period-Wesenheit-Metallicity relationships consistent with the Gaia eDR3 distance scale, we uniformly measure heliocentric and M31-centric distances to a typical precision of $\sim20$ kpc (3%) and $\sim10$ kpc (8%), respectively. We revise the 3D structure of the M31 galactic ecosystem and: (i) confirm a highly anisotropic spatial distribution such that $\sim80$% of M31's satellites reside on the near side of M31; this feature is not easily explained by observational effects; (ii) affirm the thin (rms $7-23$ kpc) planar "arc" of satellites that comprises roughly half (15) of the galaxies within 300 kpc from M31; (iii) reassess physical proximity of notable associations such as the NGC 147/185 pair and M33/AND XXII; and (iv) illustrate challenges in tip-of-the-red-giant branch distances for galaxies with $M_V > -9.5$, which can be biased by up to 35%. We emphasize the importance of RR Lyrae for accurate distances to faint galaxies that should be discovered by upcoming facilities (e.g., Rubin Observatory). We provide updated luminosities and sizes for our sample. We determine the detection limits of the search for dwarf galaxies in the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) using the algorithm developed by the PAndAS team. The recovery fractions of artificial dwarf galaxies are, as expected, a strong function of physical size and luminosity and, to a lesser extent, distance. We show that these recovery fractions vary strongly with location in the surveyed area because of varying levels of contamination from both the Milky Way foreground stars and the stellar halo of Andromeda. We therefore provide recovery fractions that are a function of size, luminosity, and location within the survey on a scale of 1 square degree. Overall, the effective surface brightness for a 50-percent detection rate range between 28 and 30 mag per square arcsecond. This is in line with expectations for a search that relies on photometric data that are as deep as the PAndAS survey. The derived detection limits are an essential ingredient on the path to constraining the global properties of Andromeda's system of satellite dwarf galaxies and, more broadly, to provide constraints on dwarf galaxy formation and evolution in a cosmological context., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, accepted in ApJ
