Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND: In node-negative breast cancer (NNBC), a high risk of recurrence is determined by clinico-pathological or tumor-biological assessment. Taxanes may improve adjuvant chemotherapy. METHODS: NNBC 3-Europe, the first randomized phase-3 trial in node-negative breast cancer (BC) with tumor-biological risk assessment, recruited 4146 node-negative breast cancer patients from 2002 to 2009 in 153 centers. Risk assessment was performed by clinico-pathological factors (43%) or biomarkers (uPA/PAI-1, urokinase-type plasminogen activator/its inhibitor PAI-1). High-risk patients received six courses 5-fluorouracil (500 mg/m(2)), epirubicin (100 mg/m(2)), cyclophosphamide (500 mg/m(2)) (FEC), or three courses FEC followed by three courses docetaxel 100 mg/m(2) (FEC-Doc). Primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS). RESULTS: In the intent-to-treat population, 1286 patients had received FEC-Doc, and 1255 received FEC. Median follow-up was 45 months. Tumor characteristics were equally distributed; 90.6% of tested tumors had high uPA/PAI-1-concentrations. Planned courses were given in 84.4% (FEC-Doc) and 91.5% (FEC). Five-year-DFS was 93.2% (95% C.I. 91.1-94.8) with FEC-Doc and 93.7% (91.7-95.3) with FEC. Five-year-overall survival was 97.0% (95.4-98.0) for FEC-Doc and 96.6% % (94.9-97.8) for FEC. CONCLUSIONS: With adequate adjuvant chemotherapy, even high-risk node-negative breast cancer patients have an excellent prognosis. Docetaxel did not further reduce the rate of early recurrences and led to significantly more treatment discontinuations.

International audience; La France a opté pour une fermeture du cycle du combustible afin de recycler les matières valorisables et limiter la quantité et la nocivité des déchets radioactifs. Sa mise en oeuvre industrielle est réalisée selon le procédé PUREX (Plutonium, Uranium, Reduction, EXtraction). Cet article présente quelques travaux de recherche récents, dans le but d'améliorer l'état des connaissances de la chimie des actinides en solution d'un point de vue fondamental et en soutien au développement de procédés industriels. Après un rappel des connaissances de base concernant la spéciation des actinides en solution aqueuse, les principales étapes du procédé industriel de traitement/ recyclage du plutonium sont présentées, suivies de quelques exemples récents illustrant l'intérêt de la spéciation pour la compréhension des phénomènes chimiques dans quelques opérations du cycle du combustible nucléaire.

Abstract

An electron beam that allows continuous deposit of epitaxial CeO2 and other oxide buffer layers on biaxially textured Ni tapes has been developed including two interconnected electron beam evaporation chambers. The tape's motion is controlled by an integral reel-to-reel system in which deformation is also avoided. The crystallographic consistency of the epitaxial CeO2 is determined by X-ray phi-scans which were performed as a function of length.

Abstract

Ex-situ approaches were used to optimize the buffer layer architecture with the sequence, CeO2/YSZ/CeO2/Ni, for growing high current yttrium barium copper oxides (YBCO) and Tl,Bi-1223 conductors on Rolling-Assisted Biaxially Textured Substrates. It was noted that the e-beam/sputtered buffer layer combinations produce high transport current critical density YBCO films. In addition, it was observed that the microstructure of the thin e-beam CeO2 films and sputtered YSZ films was dense, crack-free and columnar.

Abstract

Teylers Museum was founded in 1784 and soon thereafter became one of the most important centres of Dutch science. The Museum’s first director, Martinus van Marum, famously had the world’s largest electrostatic generator built and set up in Haarlem. This subsequently became the most prominent item in the Museum’s world-class, publicly accessible, and constantly growing collections. These comprised scientific instruments, mineralogical and palaeontological specimens, prints, drawings, paintings, and coins. Van Marum’s successors continued to uphold the institution’s prestige and use the collections for research purposes, while it was increasingly perceived as an art museum by the public. In the early twentieth century, the Nobel Prize laureate Hendrik Antoon Lorentz was appointed head of the scientific instrument collection and conducted experiments on the Museum’s premises. Showcasing Science: A History of Teylers Museum in the Nineteenth Century charts the history of Teylers Museum from its inception until Lorentz’ tenure. From the vantage point of the Museum’s scientific instrument collection, this book gives an analysis of the changing public role of Teylers Museum over the course of the nineteenth century.

Southwire Co is using novel high-temperature superconductors to develop superconducting underground transmission cables. It has succeeded in designing, fabricating and testing two 500 A and one 2000 A prototypes with the assistance of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The prototype cables were wound with Intermagnetics General Corp's Bi-2223/AG tapes and subjected to both AC and DC currents in liquid nitrogen.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has tested two 500-A class prototype high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables fabricated by Southwire Co. Insulation was not applied in separating individual HTS tapes in the first cable, while the second was insulated with Kapton tape for alternating current loss and current distribution studies. Alternating and direct current tests were conducted in liquid nitrogen from 77 to 69 K.

Contains fulltext : 218289.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access), MN1 encodes a transcriptional co-regulator without homology to other proteins, previously implicated in acute myeloid leukaemia and development of the palate. Large deletions encompassing MN1 have been reported in individuals with variable neurodevelopmental anomalies and non-specific facial features. We identified a cluster of de novo truncating mutations in MN1 in a cohort of 23 individuals with strikingly similar dysmorphic facial features, especially midface hypoplasia, and intellectual disability with severe expressive language delay. Imaging revealed an atypical form of rhombencephalosynapsis, a distinctive brain malformation characterized by partial or complete loss of the cerebellar vermis with fusion of the cerebellar hemispheres, in 8/10 individuals. Rhombencephalosynapsis has no previously known definitive genetic or environmental causes. Other frequent features included perisylvian polymicrogyria, abnormal posterior clinoid processes and persistent trigeminal artery. MN1 is encoded by only two exons. All mutations, including the recurrent variant p.Arg1295* observed in 8/21 probands, fall in the terminal exon or the extreme 3' region of exon 1, and are therefore predicted to result in escape from nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. This was confirmed in fibroblasts from three individuals. We propose that the condition described here, MN1 C-terminal truncation (MCTT) syndrome, is not due to MN1 haploinsufficiency but rather is the result of dominantly acting C-terminally truncated MN1 protein. Our data show that MN1 plays a critical role in human craniofacial and brain development, and opens the door to understanding the biological mechanisms underlying rhombencephalosynapsis.

Abstract

Aligned-MgO whiskers are embedded in monofilamentary BSCCO 2223 tapes to improve their strain tolerance. The MgO whiskers, which were fabricated by means of the molten synthesis method, mixed with the tapes so that they account for 15% of the materials' volume. Resistivity, current density and temperature measurements show that the resulting BSCCO 2223 tapes have excellent resistance against bend strain.

Investigation of synthesis routes helps develop stability information for YBa2Cu4O8, Y2Ba4Cu7O(15-x) and YBa2Cu3O(7-x). Oxygen pressures range from 10 to 145 atmospheres, and the stability information for a temperature range of 900 to 1,040 degrees Celsius is obtained. Oxygen partial pressure and temperature ranges for the stability of the three phases overlap.
