LaFollette proposed that the best way to protect children from parents’ abuse and neglect would be to implement parental licenses for prospective parents. He pointed out that the state should introduce licensing for all professions in which (1) people can harm those they serve, (2) can perform risky tasks safely only if they are competent, and (3) that the benefits of the licensing program are higher than the potential costs. This paper draws answers to challenges posed by parental licensing in a comprehensive pedagogical education of parents whose purpose is to develop good parenting to maximise the child’s welfare. Raising a child from a position where the transition to parenthood was preceded by continuous intensive pedagogical parent education aims to understand parenting as a personal maturation and growth. So, this article presents the current condition of Croatian parenting programmes.

The departure of a parent to serve a sentence of imprisonment affects the change of a family’s climate, which can be divided into three groups: (a) changes in daily life navigation and activity; (b) changes in parent-child relationships; and (c) changes in financial circumstances. The abrupt change that a child experiences can lead to the development of externalized and internalized behavioral problems, as well as changes in student academic achievement due to lack of motivation and concentration. Since the school is an educational institution that provides children with secondary socialization opportunities, it has an important role in supporting students whose parents are serving prison sentences. This paper presents research suggesting that stigmatizing students whose parents are in prison can bring shame, discomfort, and withdrawal to themselves. Considering that there are no clear suggestions on how the primary school should act when the parent goes to prison, the authors of this paper propose guidelines on minimizing the harmful consequences on socioemotional development and academic success of students whose parents go to prison.

Background/purpose – Contemporary teaching focuses on the students’ active role in the acquisition of knowledge and largely neglects the role of emotions. Given the importance of empathy when it comes to the emotional development of the individual, and the opportunities offered by history as a subject with regard to encouraging empathy, the main purpose of research is to analyze the extent to which history textbooks contribute to empathy as one of key competencies of today’s world. Materials/methods – In the research, qualitative and quantitative content analysis was used. The analysis includes only one didactic-methodical toolkit of the textbook - questions and tasks by the formulation of which it is possible to identify in which direction the teaching process “moves” and to what extent it encourages the cultivation of emotions. Results – The results suggest that high school history textbooks overemphasize the cognitive aspect of the learning process while simultaneously inadequately putting students in a position that would also allow them to be more emotionally engaged with the historical events and to thereby develop empathy. Conclusion – It is necessary to develop detailed guidelines with clear instructions on how to encourage students’ emotional engagement in individual subjects and teaching units.

- Abstract
Political knowledge and democratic attitudes are recognized in contemporary studies as important dimensions of democratic political culture. Furthermore, knowledge and attitudes can be seen as integral parts of political competence. Unlike other dimensions of political culture such as, for example, political participation, political interest, etc., research on political knowledge and democratic attitudes are more an exception than a rule. This assessment is especially true for Croatia. In this paper, we attempt to address some of these gaps by focusing on the exploration of political competences of Croatian final-year secondary school students. The paper is divided into two major sections. In the first part, we discuss the meaning and importance of political competence for the functioning of democratic political systems. The second part consists of a presentation and discussion of the research results on political knowledge and democratic attitudes of Croatian final-year secondary school students conducted in three time points - 2010, 2015 and 2021. By doing so, we want to detect the levels of political knowledge and democratic attitudes, as well as the possible changes that occurred in these levels during the research period. Finally, we are also interested in the relationship between these two dimensions of political competence.

In the past two decades, managing and raising the general level of environmental awareness on all levels of society has become one of the main social goals that has reached a level of social and political consensus unseen ever before. Considering that only things that can be measured can actually be managed, the measuring of environmental awareness based on scientific criteria is becoming increasingly interesting to scientists working in different disciplines. As these disciplines developed, numerous laws were discovered, models were developed and limitations which should be taken into consideration were defined. However, there is a lack of literary sources that could offer a review of scientific knowledge acquired so far and provide a certain “check list” for researchers. The purpose of the present research is to determine and discuss the key issues that should be considered while creating measurement instruments, conducting analysis of research results and interpreting them. Based on the analysis of relevant theoretical cognitions and empirical research results, the paper provides an overview of key issues and categorises them in three groups: issues in measuring different components of attitude, issues concerning the attitude – behaviour gap and issues concerning the influence of social desirability and research sample. By considering all of these issues it is possible to account for and minimize their negative influence and to contribute to the quality, universality and comparability of the obtained results, as well as of the developed models and the defined laws.

Purpose: This paper unfolds the ways in which Croatia, as a young post-communist democracy, has aligned its transition and consolidation with the development of education programs that would support the protection of human rights and the creation of a democratic political culture. Design/methodology/approach: By combining the existing studies with the authors’ own analyses of documents and internet sources, as well as interviews with teachers, this paper reveals that by adopting vague and non-binding policies, the Croatian political elite has demonstrated a lack of political will and courage over the past twenty-five years to develop a systematic and quality-based citizenship education. Findings: After long-term negligence, in the most recent five-year period, the need to change the educational path has gained prominence on the policy and political agenda. However, the reform process did not result in bridging, but in the deepening of ideological divides within the Croatian society. With the officially adopted interdisciplinary and cross-curricular approach, the responsibility for carrying out citizenship education was placed in the hands of teachers, with civil society organizations taking a compensating role. Whilst the former lack practical education, as well as guidelines and resources to incorporate citizenship education into the subjects they teach, the latter are incapable of reaching out to a sufficient share of the youth population. The outcome is that the youth continuously displays inadequate levels of citizenship competences.

The paper presents concurrent predictive relations of personality traits with social behaviour of children at the transition from early to middle childhood. Personality ratings of firstgraders (N = 316) were collected using the Inventory of Child and Adolescent Individual Differences (Zupančič & Kavčič, 2009) and the Social Competence and Behaviour Evaluation Scale (La Freniere et al., 2001) was employed to obtain assessments on the children's social competence, internalizing behaviour, and externalizing behaviour. To account for the same rater bias, the children's personality and social behaviour were rated by both teachers and assisstent teachers in the first grade of a nine-year compulsory school; the predictions were based on two sets of their cross-ratings. The firstgraders' social competentnce was consistently (over the cross-ratings) predicted by high conscientiousness, mainly due to ratings of child compliance, whereas low conscientiousness was predictive of internalizing behaviour, especially due to low ratings of subjectively perceived child intelligence. Disagreeableness (both antagonism and strong will) and low neuroticism contributed to assessments of the observed children's externalizing behaviour. In regard to neuroticism, ratings of child fear/insecurity were positively related to externalizing and ratings of child shyness were negatively associated with the observed incidence of externalizing behaviour.

This study investigated perceptions of achieved criteria for adulthood (ACA) among emerging adult student samples from Austria ( n = 210), Slovenia ( n = 201), and the United States ( n = 225). Controlling for parental education, students’ age (18-27 years), and gender, we aimed to explain between- and within-sample differences in the ACA by taking the students’ living situation, intimate relationship status, and expectations about their future perspectives into account. The participants indicated the ACA on the questionnaire based on criteria for reaching adulthood used in studies of adulthood conceptions. The students also provided information about when they think they will start the first full-time career, get married, gain financial independence, and become a parent. The Europeans indicated less ACA than the Americans; 20% of the variance in the ACA was, along with the country effect, explained by the intimate relationship status and future perspectives.

Poznavanje značilnosti psihološkega delovanja starejših je prvi pogoj za razvijanje načinov ohranjanja in izboljšanja njihove kompetentnosti, blagostanja in vključevanja v družbo. V prispevku predstavljamo ugotovitve slovenske raziskave o poznavanju dejstev o staranju in značilnostih starejših oseb pri velikem vzorcu različno starih in različno izobraženih odraslih. Večina odraslih pozna dejstva o telesnem stanju, zdravju in nekaterih posebnostih psihološkega delovanja starejših.

Public Health, Environmental and Occupational Health - Abstract
Issue/problem Due to the population aging, injuries in relation to falls are a public health problem in Slovenia as well. They are expensive for the health care system, usually have serious consequences and lead to irreversible impairment of function, institutionalization and death. Description of the problem During 2019, registered nurses in community health nursing from 25 Primary Healthcare Centres participated in the MoST pilot project. They conducted a fall risk assessment of 64 years and older patients at their homes, using a Slovenian adaptation of the STEADI (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) questionnaire. At the same time, they also performed an assessment of muscle strength, gait and balance with a timed framed Stand up and go test. Afterwards patients were classified into 3 groups (low, medium, and high risk of falls) and were treated according to the Algorithm for the assessment of the risk of falls for the elderly and prevention measures. Results (effects/changes) 6815 fall risk assessments were conducted (results are preliminary). More details will be presented at the HEPA conference as the data is still being processed. Based on the expected population distribution, mobility and nutrition treatment, home safety counselling and a multifactorial risk assessment during the development phase of the project were planned. The interventions were performed at integrated Health Promotion Centres in Primary Healthcare Centres and at the homes of the elderly. Lessons The risk assessment method described earlier should be carried out at the home of an elderly person. The most effective interventions were multicomponent measures or prevention programs with ever-present physical exercise program. Focused physical activity aiming at improving strength and balance not only reduces the frequency of falls, but also the frequency and severity of injuries in the event of a fall. Main messages A fall risk assessment is an economically viable fall prevention intervention in the elderly. Time invested in preventing falls is reflected in a more active elderly population.

Contemporary teaching focuses on the students' active role in the acquisition of knowledge. Specifically, it concentrates on the cognitive aspect of knowledge and neglects the role of emotions, whose role and significance in the learning process should be recognized as extremely viable not only for the learning process but also for the students’ personal development and their interaction with peers. In this paper, the authors perceive empathy as the acceptance, understanding, and appreciation of others' emotions, opinions, and social position while highlighting its significance in the students’ learning process and their interaction with peers. Since textbooks are the primary medium via which the transfer of knowledge occurs, in the second part of the paper, we analysed high school history textbooks' content. The results show that questions and tasks as textbook tools are not neglected in history textbooks. Moreover, the textbooks contain a considerable number of questions and tasks aimed at encouraging students' active role in the process of teaching and learning, which is evident from the way they are formulated. The results also suggest that high school history textbooks overemphasize the cognitive aspect of the learning process while simultaneously inadequately put students in a position which would also allow them to be more emotionally engaged with the historical events. The authors of the research conclude that there is not enough emphasis in high school history textbooks on encouraging students to understand and acquire a complete historical picture, which is why the article highlights guidelines for encouraging empathy in history teaching.

Objectives In 2019 The Croatian Working Group for Laboratory Hematology, on behalf of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, wanted to explore the background in field of laboratory hematology routine practice among Croatian laboratories in order to develop future strategies for producing national recommendations, if needed. Methods During April and May 2019, a comprehensive survey covering all main parts of the total testing process within the field of laboratory hematology among Croatian medical laboratories was conducted. The survey comprised 49 inquiries. Data was collected using Survey Monkey (Palo Alto, CA, USA). All collected data was anonymized. Results The response rate was 72%. There is still a substantial number of laboratories that have only three-part differential hematology analyzers (9%). Furthermore, a very high number of laboratories did not perform analyzer verification prior to implementation into routine work (31%). Out of those who have verified their analyzers, a diversity of guidelines and recommendations were used. Nearly 10% of the laboratories do not have a defined policy regarding specimen rejection. The majority of the participants perform internal quality control daily (83%), however, only 51% of respondents evaluate the agreement between different hematology analyzers on daily basis. Although more than 90% of Croatian laboratories have a defined policy regarding specimen rejection, only 61% of respondents continuously monitor quality indicators in routine practice. Conclusions The survey revealed substantial differences in all aspects of laboratory hematology practices among Croatian medical laboratories, indicating the need for universal recommendations at the national level.

Nowadays, women want a more intimate and familiar atmosphere during labour, which results in increased planned home birth rates. Every woman has the autonomy to decide where she will give birth; however, it is important that she is informed of risks and advantages beforehand. Home births can be distinguished between planned and unplanned home births. Planned home births can be conducted by professional birth attendants (licensed midwives) or birth assistants (doulas, etc). The rates of Slovenian women who decided to deliver at home are increasing year by year. Researches on home births still present discordant data about home birth safety. Their findings have shown that the main advantage of home birth is a spontaneous birth without medical interventions, especially in multiparous low-risk women. The main disadvantage, however, is a higher risk for neonatal death, in particular on occurrence of complications requiring a transfer to hospital and surgical intervention. Global guidelines emphasize careful selection of candidates suitable for home birth, well-informed pregnant women, education of birth attendants, and strict formation of transfer indications.

- Abstract
Introduction: First impression on potential readers is created by the title; therefore, authors should give importance to the title structure. The aim of this study was to establish whether articles created by a smaller number of authors and with shorter, descriptive or declarative titles gain more citations and whether article title length and number of authors correlate to the number of citations. Material and methods: A cross-sectional study on article citation data for 30 scientific journals published in 2016 in Medical Laboratory Technology field according to Web of Science database was conducted. The type of article, type of title, as well as number of words in the title and number of authors was recorded. Results: In the group of original articles (N = 2623), articles with declarative titles (N = 336, 13%) showed statistically higher number of citations in multiple comparison analysis when compared to descriptive titles (P < 0.001). No correlation was found between number of citations and title word count (r = 0.07, P < 0.001) nor between number of citations and number of authors in group of original articles (r = 0.09, P < 0.001). Original articles with descriptive titles longer than 15 words or with more than six authors are cited more (P = 0.005 and P < 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Based on results of our study, titles do matter. Therefore, authors of original articles might want to consider including their findings in the title and having longer titles.

Isti nastaje kad normalne žljezdane stanice dojke promjene patofiziološka svojstva, te nekontrolirano počinje rasti broj, veličina i endokrina funkcija, i uništavaju okolno zdravo tkivo.

- Abstract
Informed consent is a process in which a human subject who is to participate in research needs to give his or her consent after being properly informed of the expected benefits as well as the potential harm of the research that will be performed. The function and purpose of the research ethics committee is to ensure that the research that will take place is in accordance with the relevant ethical standards. This means that the committee must assess the appropriateness of the design of the study reviewed. Research in the field of laboratory medicine has specific features, i.e. the use of samples that remain after routine analysis, data collection from databases containing patient information, data mining, collection of laboratory management data, method/instrument comparisons and validation, etc. As most of such research is either retrospective or not directly associated with patients, the question arises as to whether all types of research require informed consent and ethics committee approval. This article aims to clarify what is specific about obtaining informed consent and ethical approval in laboratory medicine, to provide general guidance on informed consent and ethical approval requirements based on the type of study, and what information should be included in applications for ethical approval and informed consent. This could also provide some guidance for future contributors to the Biochemia Medica.

Rezultati se uspoređuju s osobitostima sufiksalne tvorbe u hrvatskome standardnom jeziku., The paper analyses nominal derivatives formed through suffixation in the Dictionary of the Croatian Kajkavian Literary Language. Suffixation is the most productive form of noun formation, a fact that has also been confirmed by corpus research. These new derivatives will be analyzed in this paper. The paper also considers the basic types of word formation. Attention will also be drawn to derivatives formed through the adaptation of foreign models.

- Abstract
Studies with positive results are greatly more represented in literature than studies with negative results, producing so-called publication bias. This review aims to discuss occurring problems around negative results and to emphasize the importance of reporting negative results. Underreporting of negative results introduces bias into meta-analysis, which consequently misinforms researchers, doctors and policymakers. More resources are potentially wasted on already disputed research that remains unpublished and therefore unavailable to the scientific community. Ethical obligations need to be considered when reporting results of studies on human subjects as people have exposed themselves to risk with the assurance that the study is performed to benefit others. Some studies disprove the common conception that journal editors preferably publish positive findings, which are considered as more citable. Therefore, all stakeholders, but especially researchers, need to be conscious of disseminating negative and positive findings alike.

This article explores the historical development of youth work in Croatia, over the course of a two-decades civil society development process in a post-conflict country. The focus of this paper is on identifying foundations as well as trends and patterns relevant for an historical analysis of Croatian youth work. We seek to offer a historical and path-dependent scenario for describing targeted aspects of the ‘evolution’ of Croatian youth work. By drawing from available data from non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and from personal experience, we describe three key phases of youth work development: (I) the period of early 1990s, we recognize as a ‘direct peace building’ youth work as it was characterized with bottom-up peace building and non-violent civic action of thousands of young people ; (II) the rise and diffusion of non- formal education youth work during the mid and late 1990s ; (III) the growth of a networked youth sector and a focus on youth policy advocacy starting in 2000, with strong and fruitful cooperation among various actors on the national NGO scene. Such categorization highlights various practices what we consider to represent youth work in a specific (and contested) national framework – (I) young people being engaged in direct peace building and non-violent civic actions during the war and post-war transition ; (II) young people being engaged in various non- formal educational programs provided by the youth NGOs, created for young people but also in a cooperation with young people ; (III) youth initiatives and NGOs networking and young people being engaged in a long-term advocacy process. We argue that by becoming a member of European Union, Croatia has to articulate what youth work represents within their national framework, as various practices that we find quite important and influential are neglected within the EU youth policy. Work with young people with fewer opportunities is being presented as a case study, building up on our observation that contemporary youth work continues to be embedded in civil society development and non-formal education.

The article focuses on street harassment which authors define as harassment of women in public places such as streets, parks or public transport. Current researches in Croatia and in the world show that it is a widespread phenomenon and a large number of women have experienced some kind of harassment in public places. Both scientists and community activists show growing interest in this phenomenon, but it has not yet been sufficiently and adequately explored. The first objective of this paper is to define and describe the phenomenon of street harassment, as well as etiology, phenomenology and consequences of harassment. The second objective is to provide a review of the existing researches on the prevalence of street harassment in Croatia and other countries. The authors summarize researches on the incidence of street harassment, explain basic terms connected to harassment, the connection of street harassment to other forms of gender - based violence and discrimination of women and describe the individual and social consequences of street harassment. Street harassment is part of a continuum of violence against women with consequences on the individual woman’s well-being and on the whole society that needs to be recognized as a social problem and a form of discrimination.

This paper focuses on the presentation of prevention in educational institutions that is based on research. It shows the process of research for the creation of new school prevention program in Elementary School in Zagreb. The focus is on presentation of research on violence, substance abuse and other risks as well as on highlighting the importance of organizing prevention in the school environment. The importance of the research is that empirical data on existing problems and risks was important in creation of preventive measures and activities. To gain a better knowledge about the risks faced by students who attend this Elementary School in town Zagreb district Pešćenica - Ferenščica three focus groups with students and their parents were held. After that quantitative research on the problem of violence among students (169 students) was conducted. Research has been the starting point for further preventative work. Objectives of this study were to establish the impact of initial F. graminearum contamination level of wheat on deoxynivalenol (DON) content in beer and its byproducts and the influence of applied unit operations during wheat beer production process on DON concentration. Malt samples contaminated with different initial F. graminearum contamination levels (0.5 – 12%) were subjected to mashing procedure followed by fermentation procedure of wort samples. Wheat samples, dry malt (stabilized), wort, beer and byproducts (spent grain and yeast) underwent microbiological and toxicological analyses which determined the share of F. graminearum contaminated grain and DON concentrationResults of toxicological analyses show that DON was stable during beer production and that the toxin was transferred from malt to wort as well as the byproducts such as spent grain and yeast. Results also indicate that wheat with higher initial F. graminearum contamination level gives malt with higher DON concentration.

Zaključuje se kako bi bolje razumijevanje povezanosti između nasilja nad životinjama i nasilja među ljudima moglo dovesti do razvijanja učinkovitijih preventivnih strategija i tretmanskih intervencija protiv svih oblika nasilja., The article analyzes animal torture and other crimes and misdemeanors that sanction animal cruelty and torture. It displays the prevalence of violations of the provisions of Article 260 of the Croatian Penal Code. In addition it shows the current world researches that indicate a relationship between animal cruelty and violence among people in order to emphasize the connection between these seemingly different forms of violence and to explain the social danger of animal cruelty. Separately it analyzes the animal cruelty in childhood as a symptom of behavioral disorders or inadequate environment in which the child lives. Then it analyzes the relationship between animal torture especially cruelty to pets, and domestic violence as well as the prevalence of animal torture among the offenders, especially those who have committed violent crimes. In conclusion it stresses the importance of treatment and preventive measures against torture of animals and some recommendations for preventive activities and treatment. It is concluded that a better understanding of the relationship between animal torture and violence between people could lead to development of more effective preventive strategies and treatment interventions against all forms of violence.

Subjective age – defined as age felt – was measured in a sample of 782 respondents, aged between 18 and 89 years. Adults younger than 20 years had on average somewhat older subjective ages and those older than 20 reported younger subjective ages relative to their chronological age. The discrepancy between subjective age and actual age in years increased over adulthood. Differences for chronological age but not for gender and education were found in respondents reporting positive, negative and no subjective-actual age discrepancy. When the age discrepancy between subjective and actual age was considered as a proportion of chronological age, no increase was noted after the fourth decade of life; the respondents over 37 years felt about 15% younger than their actual age. Gender and education did not account for differences in the proportional age discrepancy with the full sample, whereas with the elderly subsample (N = 106) neither demographic variables (marital status, living arrangement and place of residence) nor five robust personality dimensions were linked to the discrepancy significantly. At the facet level, dominance and kindness were related to the proportional age discrepancy but a negligible portion of variance was explained., Subjektivna dob – definirana kao osjećaj dobi – mjerenja je na uzorku od 782 ispitanika u dobi od 18 do 89 godina.

- Abstract
Introduction: Our aim was to investigate if: (a) authors of Biochemia Medica meet authorship criteria given by International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), (b) authorship violations are more frequent in submissions containing some type of scientific misconduct. Materials and methods: Self-reported authorship contributions regarding the three ICMJE criteria were analysed for all submissions to Biochemia Medica (February 2013-April 2015) which were forwarded to peer-review. To test the differences in frequencies we used Chi-squared test. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 186 manuscripts were authored by 804 authors. All ICMJE criteria were met by 487/804 (61%) authors. The first and the last author met all the criteria more frequently than those authors in between (P < 0.001). The degree to which ICMJE criteria was met for the first author did not differ between manuscripts authored by only one author and those authored by >1 author (P = 0.859). In 9% of the manuscripts ICMJE criteria were not met by a single author. Authors of the 171/186 manuscripts declared that all persons qualify for authorship but only 49% of them satisfied all ICMJE criteria. Authors have failed to acknowledge contributors in 88/186 (47%) manuscripts; instead these contributors have been listed as authors without fulfilling ICMJE criteria. Authorship violation was not more common in 42 manuscripts with some type of scientific misconduct (P = 0.135). Conclusion: Large proportion of authors of the manuscripts submitted to Biochemia Medica do not fulfil ICMJE criteria. Violation of authorship criteria is not more common for manuscripts with some type of scientific misconduct.

Genetički modificirana pšenica pokazala je veliku tolerantnost na sušu u poljskim pokusima., Drought tolerance is a complex trait of some plant species and genotypes determined by different morphological and/or physiological traits. Tolerant genotypes can circumvent drought in different ways: (1) by early maturity (mechanism of drought escape), (2) by closing stomata that prevents excessive transpiration, but also reduces photosynthesis (mechanism of drought avoidance), or (3) by enhanced accumulation of different osmolites that maintain plant turgor and enable normal metabolism in water stress conditions (mechanism of drought tolerance). The very important is also the ability of tolerant plants to defend against oxidative stress as part of water stress. Most of the genes responsible for tolerance to drought have inducible promotors, and abscisic acid (ABA) is a signal that induces many of them. Many loci for quantitative traits (QTL-s) that control drought tolerance in wheat have been identified and mapped on different chromosomes. Apart from conventional selection for drought tolerance, great efforts have been made to produce genetically modified plants tolerant to drought. Genetically modified wheat showed high drought tolerance in field conditions.

pšenica, indukcija kalusa, regeneracija, nezreli cvatovi - Abstract

The ionizing radiation belongs to the basic physical factors that can be measured. We forget often about its risks and the possible damage to our health. The imaging methods which use the ionizing radiation increase the diagnostics quality and they have become a certainty for many medical workers. Therefore, they are being used without rational thinking many times. With this is related to increasing the cumulative dose of patients. Next problem can be radiation safety knowledge of medical workers. The enormous increase in the use of sources ionizing radiation in medicine and rapid development, there may be a disproportionate acquisition of radiation safety knowledge of healthcare workers. At the same time, constant attention must be paid to the biological effects of radiation and realize epidemiology studies. In all the areas mentioned the public health has space. However, it is sad that presently, the radiation safety is not considered important enough in Public Health. Based on many sources, it is safe to say that this is a major problem, because the public health itself can play an important role in radiation safety. It is important to point out, that safety and effectivity of using the source of ionizing radiation is one of the main components of Good Medical Practice.

This study was designed to investigate whether oxidative stress, nitric oxide (NO) deficiency and/or endothelial dysfunction (ED) are present in young borderline hypertensive rats (BHR) and whether these pathologies can be causally involved in the initiation of blood pressure (BP) increases. Additionally, we tested the hypothesis that crowding stress, experienced during the peripubertal period, may produce persistent or delayed disorders in corticosterone release, NO synthesis, oxidative status and/or endothelial function that could accelerate BP increases. To test these hypotheses, 5-week-old male BHR and normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) were either kept in control conditions (for 2 and 4 weeks, respectively) or exposed to social stress produced by crowding for 2 weeks (stress). After cessation of crowding, a group of rats of each phenotype was kept in control conditions for the next 2 weeks (post-stress). Systolic BP of 5-week-old BHR was significantly increased vs. age-matched WKY (127 ± 3 vs. 104 ± 3 mmHg, p < 0.01) and remained significantly higher throughout the course of the experiment. Despite elevated BP, no signs of oxidative damage to plasma lipids, NO deficiency or ED were observed in control BHR vs. age-matched WKY. Crowding stress elevated plasma corticosterone and accelerated BP increases only in BHR; these effects persisted 2 weeks post-stress. Crowding failed to induce oxidative damage to plasma lipids in either phenotype, but it produced persistent decreases in NO production in the hypothalamus and brainstem of both strains of rats, as well as in the hearts of BHR. In contrast, crowding failed to reduce NO production in the aortae or acetylcholine-induced relaxations of the femoral arteries in both strains investigated. However, significantly reduced aortic NO production was observed in BHR 2 weeks post-stress vs. age-matched controls, which was in agreement with reduced NO-dependent components of vasorelaxation. In conclusion, this study’s data showed that oxidative stress, NO deficiency and ED are not causally involved in initiation of blood pressure increase in BHR. However, exposure to stressful environments produced persistent increases in plasma corticosterone and reductions of brain and cardiac NO production followed by a delayed decrease in the NO-dependent component of endothelium-dependent relaxation—changes that collectively accelerated BP increases only in BHR.
