In recent years, the gain suppression mechanism has been studied for large localized charge deposits in Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs). LGADs are a thin silicon detector with a highly doped gain layer that provides moderate internal signal amplification. Using the CENPA Tandem accelerator at the University of Washington, the response of LGADs with different thicknesses to MeV-range energy deposits from a proton beam were studied. Three LGAD prototypes of 50~$\mu$m, 100~$\mu$m, 150~$\mu$m were characterized. The devices' gain was determined as a function of bias voltage, incidence beam angle, and proton energy. This study was conducted in the scope of the PIONEER experiment, an experiment proposed at the Paul Scherrer Institute to perform high-precision measurements of rare pion decays. Chemical reactions resulting from the ingress of carbonates into the cement matrix modify the properties of its pore solution, as well as its pore distribution and size. These changes lead to corrosion of the steel in reinforced concrete. The nature of conventional testing for the estimation of carbonation in cement-based materials is time-consuming and destructive. This paper presents a set of non-destructive ultrasound-based indexes, obtained solely from non-linear and linear analyses of ultrasonic signals, for measuring the carbonation of Portland cement pastes. Class 30RS cement pastes with three water/cement ratios by weight (0.4, 0.5, and 0.6) were considered. Carbonation was carried out for 120 days with a constant CO2 level of 4% by volume under controlled temperature and humidity, considering a unidirectional carbonation, parallel to the longitudinal axis of the samples. The level of carbonation was validated by FTIR measurements. From these analyses, different indexes with high correlation were obtained, estimated only from the ultrasonic signals and as a function of the days of exposure to carbonation, as well as of the percentage of carbonation. Further study is required for the evaluation of the reliability of these promising indexes for the determination of carbonation in cement-based materials.

Modular Arrays (MAs) are a promising architecture to enable multi-user communications in next-generation multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems based on extra-large (XL) or gigantic MIMO (gMIMO) deployments, trading off an improved spatial resolution with characteristic interference patterns associated to grating lobes. In this work, we analyze whether MAs can outperform conventional collocated deployments, in terms of achievable sum-rate and served users in a multi-user downlink set-up. First, we provide a rigorous analytical characterization of the inter-user interference for modular gMIMO systems operating in the near field. Then, we leverage these results to optimize the user selection and precoding mechanisms, designing two algorithms that largely outperform existing alternatives in the literature, with different algorithmic complexities. Results show that the proposed algorithms yield over 70% improvements in achievable sum-spectral efficiencies compared to the state of the art. We also illustrate how MAs allow to serve a larger number of users thanks to their improved spatial resolution, compared to the collocated counterpart.

Accurate channel modeling plays a pivotal role in optimizing communication systems, especially as new frequency bands come into play in next-generation networks. In this regard, fitting field measurements to stochastic models is crucial for capturing the key propagation features and to map these to achievable system performances. In this work, we shed light onto what's the most appropriate alternative for channel fitting, when the ultimate goal is performance analysis. Results show that average-error metrics should be used with caution, since they can largely fail to predict outage probability measures. We show that supremum-error fitting metrics with tail awareness are more robust to estimate both ergodic and outage performance measures, even when they yield a larger average-error fitting.

This letter considers a fluid antenna system (FAS)-aided rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) approach for downlink transmission. In particular, a base station (BS) equipped with a single traditional antenna system (TAS) uses RSMA signaling to send information to several mobile users (MUs) each equipped with FAS. To understand the achievable performance, we first present the distribution of the equivalent channel gain based on the joint multivariate t-distribution and then derive a compact analytical expression for the outage probability (OP). Moreover, we obtain the asymptotic OP in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Numerical results show that combining FAS with RSMA significantly outperforms TAS and conventional multiple access schemes, such as non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), in terms of OP. The results also indicate that FAS can be the tool that greatly improves the practicality of RSMA.

Snoring, an acoustic biomarker commonly observed in individuals with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS), holds significant potential for diagnosing and monitoring this recognized clinical disorder. Irrespective of snoring types, most snoring instances exhibit identifiable harmonic patterns manifested through distinctive energy distributions over time. In this work, we propose a novel method to differentiate monaural snoring from non-snoring sounds by analyzing the harmonic content of the input sound using harmonic/percussive sound source separation (HPSS). The resulting feature, based on the harmonic spectrogram from HPSS, is employed as input data for conventional neural network architectures, aiming to enhance snoring detection performance even under a limited data learning framework. To evaluate the performance of our proposal, we studied two different scenarios: 1) using a large dataset of snoring and interfering sounds, and 2) using a reduced training set composed of around 1% of the data material. In the former scenario, the proposed HPSS-based feature provides competitive results compared to other input features from the literature. However, the key advantage of the proposed method lies in the superior performance of the harmonic spectrogram derived from HPSS in a limited data learning context. In this particular scenario, using the proposed harmonic feature significantly enhances the performance of all the studied architectures in comparison to the classical input features documented in the existing literature. This finding clearly demonstrates that incorporating harmonic content enables more reliable learning of the essential time-frequency characteristics that are prevalent in most snoring sounds, even in scenarios where the amount of training data is limited.

Fluid antenna system (FAS) is gaining attention as an innovative technology for boosting diversity and multiplexing gains. As a key innovation, it presents the possibility to overcome interference by position reconfigurability on one radio frequency (RF) chain, giving rise to the concept of fluid antenna multiple access (FAMA). While FAMA is originally designed to deal with interference mainly by position change and treat interference as noise, this is not rate optimal, especially when suffering from a strong interference channel (IC) where all positions have strong interference. To tackle this, this paper considers a two-user strong IC where FAMA is used in conjunction with simultaneous nonunique decoding (SND). Specifically, we analyze the key statistics for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and interference-to-noise ratio (INR) for a canonical two-user IC setup, and subsequently derive the delay outage rate (DOR), outage probability (OP) and ergodic capacity (EC) of the FAMA-IC. Our numerical results illustrate huge benefits of FAMA with SND over traditional fixed-position antenna systems (TAS) with SND in the fading IC.

Compact Ultramassive Antenna Array (CUMA) is a pioneering paradigm that leverages the flexibility of the Fluid Antenna System (FAS) to enable a simple multiple access scheme for massive connectivity without the need for precoding, power control at the base station or interference mitigation in each user's equipment. In order to overcome the mathematical intricacy required to analyze their performance, we use an asymptotic matching approach to relax such complexity with a remarkable accuracy. First, we analyze the performance of the CUMA network in terms of the outage probability (OP) and the ergodic rate (ER), deriving simple and highly accurate closed-form approximations to the channel statistics. Then, we evaluate the potential of the CUMA scheme to provide secure multi-user communications from a physical layer security perspective. Leveraging a tight approximation to the signal-to-interference-ratio (SIR) distribution, we derive closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP). We observe that the baseline CUMA (without side information processing) exhibits limited performance when eavesdroppers are equipped with a CUMA of the same type. To improve their secure performance, we suggest that a simple imperfect interference cancellation mechanism at the legitimate receiver may substantially increase the secrecy performance. Monte Carlo simulations validate our approximations and demonstrate their accuracy under different CUMA-based scenarios.

This paper examines the impact of emerging fluid antenna systems (FAS) on reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided secure communications. Specifically, we consider a classic wiretap channel, where a fixed-antenna transmitter sends confidential information to an FAS-equipped legitimate user with the help of an RIS, while an FAS-equipped eavesdropper attempts to decode the message. To evaluate the proposed wireless scenario, we first introduce the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at each node, using the central limit theorem and the Gaussian copula function. We then derive a compact analytical expression for the secrecy outage probability (SOP). Our numerical results reveal how the incorporation of FAS and RIS can significantly enhance the performance of secure communications.

This paper investigates a two-user downlink system for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in which the two users deploy a fluid antenna system (FAS) and adopt the nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) strategy. Specifically, the integrated sensing and backscatter communication (ISABC) model is considered, where a dual-functional base station (BS) serves to communicate the two users and sense a tag's surrounding. In contrast to conventional ISAC, the backscattering tag reflects the signals transmitted by the BS to the NOMA users and enhances their communication performance. Furthermore, the BS extracts environmental information from the same backscatter signal in the sensing stage. Firstly, we derive closed-form expressions for both the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of the equivalent channel at the users utilizing the moment matching method and the Gaussian copula. Then in the communication stage, we obtain closed-form expressions for both the outage probability and for the corresponding asymptotic expressions in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime. Moreover, using numerical integration techniques such as the Gauss-Laguerre quadrature (GLQ), we have series-form expressions for the user ergodic communication rates (ECRs). In addition, we get a closed-form expression for the ergodic sensing rate (ESR) using the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB). Finally, the accuracy of our analytical results is validated numerically, and we confirm the superiority of employing FAS over traditional fixed-position antenna systems in both ISAC and ISABC.

We introduce a formula for determining the number of codewords of weight 2 in cyclic codes and provide results related to the count of codewords with weight 3. Additionally, we establish a recursive relationship for binary cyclic codes that connects their weight distribution to the number of solutions of associated systems of polynomial equations. This relationship allows for the computation of weight distributions from known solutions of systems of diagonal equations and vice versa, offering a new insight into the structure and properties of binary cyclic codes.

Interpretation of the ongoing efforts to simulate the atmospheres of potentially-habitable terrestrial exoplanets requires that we understand the underlying dynamics and chemistry of such objects to a much greater degree than 1D or even simple 3D models enable. Here, for the tidally-locked habitable-zone planet TRAPPIST-1e, we explore one effect which can shape the dynamics and chemistry of terrestrial planets: the inclusion of an Earth-like land-ocean distribution with orography. To do this we use the Earth-system model WACCM6/CESM2 to run a pair of TRAPPIST-1e models with N$_2$-O$_2$ atmospheres and with the sub-stellar point fixed over either land or ocean. The presence of orography shapes atmospheric transport, and in the case of Earth-like orography, breaks the symmetry between the northern and southern hemispheres which was previously found in slab ocean models. For example, peak zonal jet speeds in the southern hemisphere are $50\rightarrow100\%$ faster than similar jets in the northern hemisphere. This also affects the meridional circulation, transporting equatorial material towards the south-pole. As a result we also find significant changes in the atmospheric chemistry, including the accumulation of potentially lethal quantities of ozone at both the south pole and the surface. Future studies which investigate the effects of land-mass distribution on the dynamics of exoplanetary atmospheres should pay close attention to both the day-side land-fraction as well as the orography of the land. Ozone ($\textrm{O}_3$) is important for the survival of life on Earth because it shields the surface from ionising ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, the existence of $\textrm{O}_3$ in Earth's atmosphere is not always beneficial. Resulting from anthropogenic activity, $\textrm{O}_3$ exists as a biologically harmful pollutant at the surface when it forms in the presence of sunlight and other pollutants. As a strong oxidiser, $\textrm{O}_3$ can be lethal to several different organisms; thus, when assessing the potential habitability of an exoplanet, a key part is determining whether toxic gases could be present at its surface. Using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model version 6 (WACCM6; a three-dimensional chemistry-climate model), twelve atmospheric simulations of the terrestrial exoplanet TRAPPIST-1 e are performed with a variety of $\textrm{O}_2$ concentrations and assuming two different stellar spectra proposed in the literature. Four atmospheric simulations of the exoplanet Proxima Centauri b are also included. Some scenarios for both exoplanets exhibit time-averaged surface $\textrm{O}_3$ mixing ratios exceeding harmful levels of 40 ppbv, with 2200 ppbv the maximum concentration found in the cases simulated. These concentrations are toxic and can be fatal to most life on Earth. In other scenarios $\textrm{O}_3$ remains under harmful limits over a significant fraction of the surface, despite there being present regions which may prove inhospitable. In the case that $\textrm{O}_3$ is detected in a terrestrial exoplanet's atmosphere, determining the surface concentration is an important step when evaluating a planet's habitability., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures. We introduce and characterize the operational diversity order (ODO) in fading channels, as a proxy to the classical notion of diversity order at any arbitrary operational signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Thanks to this definition, relevant insights are brought up in a number of cases: (i) We quantify that in dominant line-of-sight scenarios an increased diversity order is attainable compared to that achieved asymptotically, even in the single-antenna case; (ii) this effect is attenuated, but still visible, in the presence of an additional dominant specular component; (iii) the decay slope in Rayleigh product channels increases very slowly, never fully achieving unitary slope for a finite SNR.

Low-Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGADs) are a type of thin silicon detector with a highly doped gain layer that provides moderate internal signal amplification. One recent challenge in the use of LGADs, studied by several research groups, is the gain suppression mechanism for large localized charge deposits. Using the CENPA Tandem accelerator at the University of Washington, the response of the LGADs to MeV-range energy deposits from a proton beam was studied. Two LGAD prototypes and a PIN diode were characterized, and the gain of the devices was determined as a function of bias voltage, incidence beam angle and proton energy. This study was conducted in the scope of the PIONEER experiment, an experiment proposed at the Paul Scherrer Institute to perform high-precision measurements of rare pion decays. %At the center of the experiment, a high-granularity active target (ATAR) will stop the pion and characterize its decay. A range of deposited charge from Minimum Ionizing Particle (MIP, few 10s of KeV) from positrons to several MeV from the stopping pions/muons is expected in PIONEER; the detection and separation of close-by hits in such a wide dynamic range will be a main challenge of the experiment. To achieve this goal, the gain suppression mechanism has to be understood fully.

In the contemporary era of high-precision spectroscopic surveys, led by projects like DESI, there is an increasing demand for optimizing the extraction of cosmological information from clustering data. This work conducts a thorough comparison of various methodologies for modeling the full shape of the two-point statistics in configuration space. We investigate the performance of both direct fits (Full-Modeling) and the parameter compression approaches (ShapeFit and Standard). We utilize the ABACUS-SUMMIT simulations, tailored to exceed DESI's precision requirements. Particularly, we fit the two-point statistics of three distinct tracers (LRG, ELG, and QSO), by employing a Gaussian Streaming Model in tandem with Convolution Lagrangian Perturbation Theory and Effective Field Theory. We explore methodological setup variations, including the range of scales, the set of galaxy bias parameters, the inclusion of the hexadecapole, as well as model extensions encompassing varying $n_s$ and allowing for $w_0w_a$CDM dark energy model. Throughout these varied explorations, while precision levels fluctuate and certain configurations exhibit tighter parameter constraints, our pipeline consistently recovers the parameter values of the mocks within $1\sigma$ in all cases for a 1-year DESI volume. Additionally, we compare the performance of configuration space analysis with its Fourier space counterpart using three models: PyBird, FOLPS and velocileptors, presented in companion papers. This paper investigates the performance of physical layer security (PLS) in fluid antenna-aided communication systems under arbitrary correlated fading channels. In particular, it is considered that a single fixed-antenna transmitter aims to send confidential information to a legitimate receiver equipped with a planar fluid antenna system (FAS), while an eavesdropper, also taking advantage of a planar FAS, attempts to decode the desired message. For this scenario, we first present analytical expressions of the equivalent channel distributions at the legitimate user and eavesdropper by using copula, so that the obtained analytical results are valid for any arbitrarily correlated fading distributions. Then, with the help of Gauss-Laguerre quadrature, we derive compact analytical expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC), the secrecy outage probability (SOP), and the secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) for the FAS wiretap channel. Moreover, for exemplary purposes, we also obtain the compact expression of ASC, SOP, and SEE by utilizing the Gaussian copula under correlated Rayleigh fading channels as a special case. Eventually, numerical results indicate that applying the fluid antenna with only one activated port to PLS can guarantee more secure and reliable transmission, when compared to traditional antenna systems (TAS) exploiting maximal ratio combining (MRC) and antenna selection (AS) under selection combining (SC).

The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data. This is a collection of papers presented by the JEM-EUSO Collaboration at the 38th International Cosmic Ray Conference (Nagoya, Japan, July 26-August 3, 2023)

JEM--EUSO is an international program for the development of space-based Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray observatories. The program consists of a series of missions which are either under development or in the data analysis phase. All instruments are based on a wide-field-of-view telescope, which operates in the near-UV range, designed to detect the fluorescence light emitted by extensive air showers in the atmosphere. We describe the simulation software ESAFin the framework of the JEM--EUSO program and explain the physical assumptions used. We present here the implementation of the JEM--EUSO, POEMMA, K--EUSO, TUS, Mini--EUSO, EUSO--SPB1 and EUSO--TA configurations in ESAF. For the first time ESAF simulation outputs are compared with experimental data.

In-order to understand the results of recent observations of exoplanets, models have become increasingly complex. Unfortunately this increases both the computational cost and output size of said models. We intend to explore if AI-image-recognition can alleviate this burden. We used DYNAMICO to run a series of HD209458-like models with different orbital-radii. Training data for a number of features of interest was selected from the initial outputs of these models. This was used to train a pair of multi-categorisation convolutional-neural-networks (CNN), which we applied to our outer-atmosphere-equilibrated models. The features detected by our CNNs revealed that our models fall into two regimes: models with a shorter orbital-radii exhibit significant global mixing which shapes the entire atmospheres dynamics. Whereas, models with longer orbital-radii exhibit negligible mixing except at mid-pressures. Here, the initial non-detection of any trained features revealed a surprise: a night-side hot-spot. Analysis suggests that this occurs when rotational influence is sufficiently weak that divergent flows from the day-side to the night-side dominate over rotational-driven transport, such as the equatorial jet. We suggest that image-classification may play an important role in future, computational, atmospheric studies. However special care must be paid to the data feed into the model, from the colourmap, to training the CNN on features with enough breadth and complexity that the CNN can learn to detect them. This letter investigates the application of the emerging fluid antenna (FA) technology in multiuser communication systems when side information (SI) is available at the transmitters. In particular, we consider a K-user dirty multiple access channel (DMAC) with non-causally known SI at the transmitters, where K users send independent messages to a common receiver with a FA capable of changing its location depending on the channel condition. By connecting Jakes' model to copula theory through Spearman's {\rho} rank correlation coefficient, we accurately describe the spatial correlation between the FA channels, and derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP) under Fisher-Snedecor F fading. Numerical results illustrate how considering FA can improve the performance of multiuser communication systems in terms of the OP and also support a large number of users using only one FA at the common receiver in a few wavelengths of space.

This paper investigates the performance of a single-user fluid antenna system (FAS), by exploiting a class of elliptical copulas to describe the dependence structure amongst the fluid antenna positions (ports). By expressing the well-known Jakes' model in terms of the Gaussian copula, we consider two cases: (i) the general case, i.e., any arbitrary correlated fading distribution; and (ii) the specific case, i.e., correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading. For both scenarios, we first derive analytical expressions for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of the equivalent channel in terms of multivariate normal distribution. Then we obtain the outage probability (OP) and the delay outage rate (DOR) to analyze the performance of FAS. By employing the popular rank correlation coefficients such as Spearman's $\rho$ and Kendall's $\tau$ , we measure the degree of dependency in correlated arbitrary fading channels and illustrate how the Gaussian copula can be accurately connected to Jakes' model in FAS. Our numerical results demonstrate that increasing the size of FAS provides lower OP and DOR, but the system performance saturates as the number of antenna ports increases. In addition, our results indicate that FAS provides better performance compared to conventional single-fixed antenna systems even when the size of fluid antenna is small.

In this work, we analyze how the use of companding techniques, together with digital predistortion (DPD), can be leveraged to improve system efficiency and performance in simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems based on power splitting. By taking advantage of the benefits of each of these well-known techniques to mitigate non-linear effects due to power amplifier (PA) and energy harvesting (EH) operation, we illustrate how DPD and companding can be effectively combined to improve the EH efficiency while keeping unalterable the information transfer performance. We establish design criteria that allow the PA to operate in a higher efficiency region so that the reduction in peak-to-average power ratio over the transmitted signal is translated into an increase in the average radiated power and EH efficiency. The performance of DPD and companding techniques is evaluated in a number of scenarios, showing that a combination of both techniques allows to significantly increase the power transfer efficiency in SWIPT systems., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication

As new wireless standards are developed, the use of higher operation frequencies comes in hand with new use cases and propagation effects that differ from the well-established state of the art. Numerous stochastic fading models have recently emerged under the umbrella of generalized fading conditions to provide a fine-grain characterization of propagation channels in the mmWave and sub-THz bands. For the first time in literature, this work carries out an experimental validation of a class of such ray-based models in a wide range of propagation conditions (anechoic, reverberation and indoor scenarios) at mmWave bands. These models allow to characterize the communication channel with a reduced number of physically interpretable parameters. In specific, we show that the independent fluctuating two-ray (IFTR) model has good capabilities to recreate rather dissimilar environments with high accuracy and only four parameters. The response of Low Gain Avalanche Diodes (LGADs), which are a type of thin silicon detector with internal gain, to X-rays of energies between 6-70 keV was characterized at the SLAC light source (SSRL). The utilized beamline at SSRL was 11-2, with a nominal beam size of 3 cm x 0.5 cm, a repetition rate of 500 MHz, and very monochromatic. LGADs of different thicknesses and gain layer configurations were read out using fast amplification boards and digitized with a fast oscilloscope. Standard PiN devices were characterized as well. The devices' energy resolution and time resolution as a function of X-ray energy were measured. The charge collection and multiplication mechanism were simulated using TCAD Sentaurus, and the results were compared with the collected data., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures

We provide an analytical characterization of the coverage region of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-aided two-user downlink communication systems. The cases of orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are considered, under the energy-splitting (ES) protocol. Results confirm that the use of STAR-RISs is beneficial to extend the coverage region, and that the use of NOMA provides a better performance compared to the OMA counterpart.

In this letter, we study the performance of a single-user fluid antenna system (FAS) under arbitrary fading distributions, in which the fading channel coefficients over the ports are correlated. We adopt copula theory to model the structure of dependency between fading coefficients. Specifically, we first derive an exact closed-from expression for the outage probability in the most general case, i.e., for any arbitrary choice of fading distribution and copula. Afterwards, for an important specific case, we analyze the performance of the outage probability under correlated Nakagami-$m$ fading channels by exploiting popular Archimedean copulas, namely, Frank, Clayton, and Gumbel. The results demonstrate that FAS outperforms the conventional single fixed-antenna system in terms of the outage probability. We also see that the spatial correlation dependency structure for the FAS is a key factor to determine its performance, which is natively captured through the choice of copula.

We introduce and characterize the Multi-cluster Two-Wave (MTW) fading model, which generalizes \textit{both} the Durgin's Two-Wave with Diffuse Power (TWDP) and the $\kappa$-$\mu$ models under a common umbrella. The MTW model consists of an arbitrary number of clusters of waves each of which may include one or two dominant (specular) components. The chief probability functions of the MTW fading model are obtained, including the probability density function, the cumulative distribution function and the generalized moment-generating function. \textcolor{black}{The proposed model is empirically validated using channel measurements in the sub-THz band and} a number of applications are exemplified, including the outage probability in noise-limited and interference-limited scenarios and the energy detection probability. %Exact expressions for the outage capacity are also obtained. We present a generalization of the notoriously unwieldy second-order scattering fading model, which is helpful to alleviate its mathematical complexity while providing an additional degree of freedom. This is accomplished by allowing its dominant specular component associated to line-of-sight propagation to randomly fluctuate. The statistical characterization of the newly proposed model is carried out, providing closed-form expressions for its probability and cumulative distribution functions, as well as for its generalized Laplace-domain statistics and raw moments. We propose an algorithm for joint precoding and user selection in multiple-input multiple-output systems with extremely-large aperture arrays, assuming realistic channel conditions and imperfect channel estimates. The use of long-term channel state information (CSI) for user scheduling, and a proper selection of the set of users for which CSI is updated allow for obtaining an improved achievable sum spectral efficiency. We introduce a new class of fading channels, built as the superposition of two fluctuating specular components with random phases, plus a clustering of scattered waves: the Multi-cluster Fluctuating Two-Ray (MFTR) fading channel. The MFTR model emerges as a natural generalization of both the fluctuating two-ray (FTR) and the $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed fading models through a more general yet equally mathematically tractable model. This generalization enables the presence of additional multipath clusters in the purely ray-based FTR model, and the convenience of the new underlying fading channel model is discussed in depth. Then, we derive all the chief probability functions of the MFTR model (e.g., probability density function (PDF), cumulative density function (CDF), and moment generation function) in closed-form, having {a mathematical complexity similar to} other fading models in the state-of-the-art. We also provide two additional analytical formulations for the PDF and the CDF: (i) in terms of a continuous mixture of $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed distributions, and (ii) as an infinite discrete mixture of Gamma distributions. Such expressions enable to conduct performance analysis under MFTR fading by directly leveraging readily available results for the $\kappa$-$\mu$ shadowed or Nakagami-$m$ cases, respectively. The Observatorio Astrof\'isico de Javalambre (OAJ{\dag}1) in Spain is a young astronomical facility, conceived and developed from the beginning as a fully automated observatory with the main goal of optimizing the processes in the scientific and general operation of the Observatory. The OAJ has been particularly conceived for carrying out large sky surveys with two unprecedented telescopes of unusually large fields of view (FoV): the JST/T250, a 2.55m telescope of 3deg field of view, and the JAST/T80, an 83cm telescope of 2deg field of view. The most immediate objective of the two telescopes for the next years is carrying out two unique photometric surveys of several thousands square degrees, J-PAS{\dag}2 and J-PLUS{\dag}3, each of them with a wide range of scientific applications, like e.g. large structure cosmology and Dark Energy, galaxy evolution, supernovae, Milky Way structure, exoplanets, among many others. To do that, JST and JAST are equipped with panoramic cameras under development within the J-PAS collaboration, JPCam and T80Cam respectively, which make use of large format (~ 10k x 10k) CCDs covering the entire focal plane. This paper describes in detail, from operations point of view, a comparison between the detailed cost of the global automation of the Observatory and the standard automation cost for astronomical facilities, in reference to the total investment and highlighting all benefits obtained from this approach and difficulties encountered. The paper also describes the engineering development of the overall facilities and infrastructures for the fully automated observatory and a global overview of current status, pinpointing lessons learned in order to boost observatory operations performance, achieving scientific targets, maintaining quality requirements, but also minimizing operation cost and human resources., Comment: Global Observatory Control System GOCS

In this paper, we study the number of $\mathbb F_{q^n}$-rational points on the affine curve $\mathcal{X}_{d,a,b}$ given by the equation $$ y^d=ax\text{Tr}(x)+b,$$ where $\text{Tr}$ denote the trace function from $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ to $\mathbb F_{q}$ and $d$ is a positive integer. In particular, we present bounds for the number of $\mathbb F_{q}$-rational points on $\mathcal{X}_{d,a,b}$ and, for the cases where $d$ satisfies a natural condition, explicit formulas for the number of rational points are obtained. Particularly, a complete characterization is given for the case $d=2$. As a consequence of our results, we compute the number of elements $\alpha$ in $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ such that $\alpha$ and $\text{Tr}(\alpha)$ are quadratic residues in $\mathbb F_{q^n}$.

We characterize the capacity region of a two-user multiple access channel (MAC) in a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication system with side information (SI) at the transmitters. We consider two uplink communication scenarios: (i) a double dirty MAC where the interferences are known non-causally to both users; and (ii) a single dirty MAC model where only one of the users knows the interference and the other one is not aware of the interference. Considering that each of the users is assisted by a different RIS with Mi elements, we derive closed-form expressions for the capacity region and the outage probability (OP) for both system models. Results show that the use of RISs is beneficial to extend the capacity region and improve the OP in both scenarios.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of fading channel correlation on the performance of dual-hop decode-and-forward (DF) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) relay networks. More specifically, by considering the power splitting-based relaying (PSR) protocol for the energy harvesting (EH) process, we quantify the effect of positive and negative dependency between the source-to-relay (SR) and relay-to-destination (RD) links on key performance metrics such as ergodic capacity and outage probability. To this end, we first represent general formulations for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the product of two arbitrary random variables, exploiting copula theory. This is used to derive the closed-form expressions of the ergodic capacity and outage probability in a SWIPT relay network under correlated Nakagami-m fading channels. Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation results are provided throughout to validate the correctness of the developed analytical results, showing that the system performance significantly improves under positive dependence in the SR-RD links, compared to the case of negative dependence and independent links. Results further demonstrate that the efficiency of the ergodic capacity and outage probability ameliorates as the fading severity reduces for the PSR protocol.

We investigate the achievable secrecy sum-rate in a multi-user XL-MIMO system, on which user distances to the base station become comparable to the antenna array dimensions. We show that the consideration of spherical-wavefront propagation inherent to these set-ups is beneficial for physical-layer security, as it provides immunity against eavesdroppers located in similar angular directions that would otherwise prevent secure communication under classical planar-wavefront propagation. A leakage subspace precoding strategy is also proposed for joint secure precoding and user scheduling, which allows to improve the secrecy sum-rate compared to conventional zero-forcing based strategies, under different eavesdropper collusion strategies., Comment: 5 pages and 4 figures. We introduce and characterize the independent fluctuating two-ray (IFTR) fading model, a class of fading models consisting of two specular components which fluctuate independently, plus a diffuse component modeled as a complex Gaussian random variable. The IFTR model complements the popular fluctuating two-ray (FTR) model, on which the specular components are fully correlated and fluctuate jointly. The chief probability functions of the received SNR in IFTR fading, including the PDF, CDF and MGF, are expressed in closed-form, having a functional form similar to other state-of-the-art fading models. Then, the IFTR model is empirically validated using multiple channels measured in rather diverse scenarios, including line of sight (LOS) millimeter-wave, land mobile satellite (LMS) and underwater acoustic communication (UAC), showing a better fit than the original FTR model and other models previously used in these environments. We present a composite wireless fading model encompassing multipath fading and shadowing based on fluctuating two-ray (FTR) fading and inverse gamma (IG) shadowing. We first determine an alternative framework for the statistical characterization and performance evaluation of the FTR fading model, which is based on the fact that the FTR fading distribution can be described as an underlying Rician Shadowed (RS) distribution with continuously varying parameter Kr (ratio of specular to diffuse components). We demonstrate that this new formulation permits to obtain a closed-form expression of the generalized moment generating function (GMGF) of the FTR model, from which the PDF and CDF of the composite IG/FTR model can be obtained in closed-form. Directional beamforming will play a paramount role in 5G and beyond networks in order to combat the higher path losses incurred at millimeter wave bands. Appropriate modeling and analysis of the angles and distances between transmitters and receivers in these networks are thus essential to understand performance and limiting factors. Most existing literature considers either infinite and uniform networks, where nodes are drawn according to a Poisson point process, or finite networks with the reference receiver placed at the origin of a disk. Under either of these assumptions, the distance and azimuth angle between transmitter and receiver are independent, and the angle follows a uniform distribution between $0$ and $2\pi$. Here, we consider a more realistic case of finite networks where the reference node is placed at any arbitrary location. We obtain the joint distribution between the distance and azimuth angle and demonstrate that these random variables do exhibit certain correlation, which depends on the shape of the region and the location of the reference node. To conduct the analysis, we present a general mathematical framework which is specialized to exemplify the case of a rectangular region. We then also derive the statistics for the 3D case where, considering antenna heights, the joint distribution of distance, azimuth and zenith angles is obtained. Finally, we describe some immediate applications of the present work, including the analysis of directional beamforming, the design of analog codebooks and wireless routing algorithms., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures

This work investigates the impact of the ever-present electromagnetic interference (EMI) on the achievable secrecy performance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided communication systems. We characterize the end-to-end RIS channel by considering key practical aspects such as spatial correlation, transmit beamforming vector, phase-shift noise, the coexistence of direct and indirect channels, and the presence of strong/mild EMI on the receiver sides. We show that the effect of EMI on secrecy performance strongly depends on the ability of the eavesdropper to cancel such interference; this puts forth the potential of EMI-based attacks to degrade physical layer security in RIS-aided communications.
