Abstract

We present an extension of the well-known micromagnetic package Mumax3 to simulate magnon-polaritons in realistic magnetic materials and nanostructures. Mumax3-cQED leverages the full GPU-accelerated capabilities of Mumax3 to model standard spin-spin interactions and the coupling of magnetic moments to external space- and time-dependent magnetic fields, with the additional unique feature of including the coupling to a cavity. We validate the code against results obtained from the Dicke model in both the paramagnetic and the superradiant phases. We show that hybrid magnon-light states can be calculated, as well as the non-equilibrium dynamics and their approach to equilibrium. In addition, we demonstrate the potential of Mumax3-cQED to reproduce experimental results and design magnon-cavity experiments, including three-dimensional and coplanar waveguide resonators. The code is fully available and will be useful for designing experiments involving microscopic saturated ferromagnets as well as systems featuring spin textures such as domain walls, vortices, or skyrmions., Comment: 34 pages, 6 figures

2. Horizons Architecture with Virtual Reality for Complexity Environments: Mixed Methods

Abstract

In the field of complexity, new methodologies emerge, such as horizon architecture, which help to focus solutions that can be integrated to foster innovation in university education. Technologies are also opening up opportunities for training, such as virtual and augmented reality. This article aims to answer the question: What innovations do postgraduate students perceive in environments using horizons architecture to integrate virtual reality? In this project's training experience for students, the horizons architecture strategy was implemented with virtual reality resources and emerging technologies. The present research was conducted with a mixed methodology, using a concurrent triangulation design. The participants were chosen from a sample for non-probability convenience. Three instruments were administered to 99 graduate students in Humanities and Education: i) a semi-structured questionnaire with demographic data and interests in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ii) a semi-structured questionnaire on students' perceptions of learning and innovative projects, and iii) a validated Likert-scale questionnaire on elements and types of educational innovation. Virtual and augmented reality supported the distance education modalities and project presentations. The results show that: (a) open and systemic innovation, (b) creation of new products and services, (c) the potential of horizons architecture strategy, (d) motivation boosted by virtual and augmented reality, and (e) critical aspects of integrating virtual and augmented reality (technical and academic). It is concluded that horizons architecture with virtual reality in university education encourages complex reasoning and invites the search for new solutions. The challenge is to train citizens with critical, scientific, systemic, innovative and entrepreneurial thinking, who are also empathetic, cooperative and committed to sustainable development. This study may be valuable to teachers, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers interested in innovative educational environments and technologies, especially those in graduate education.

3. Generalization of Cycle Decompositions of Even Dimensional Hypercubes on $d$-Dimensional Toruses

Abstract

We consider cycle decompositions of even, $2an$-dimensional hypercubes $Q_{2an},$ where $a \geq 3$ is odd and $n \geq 1.$ Prior work done by Axenovich, Offner, and Tompkins focused on obtaining the existence of cycle decompositions for even-dimensional hypercubes using long cycles of a given form, leaving out cycles of shorter lengths and, in fact, cycles of even longer lengths than those obtained there, such as $C_{7 \cdot 2^{11}}$ in the case of $Q_{14}.$ In this paper, we provide two novel methods for explicitly constructing cycle decompositions of virtually all possible cycle lengths, using cycles of a given form, on Cartesian products of cycles up to those known by the work of Axenovich, Offner, and Tompkins. In particular, we show that we can explicitly obtain cycle decompositions of even dimensional hypercubes $Q_{2an}$ for all lengths mentioned above while on the same Cartesian product of cycles. With this, the current understanding of cycle decompositions of even dimensional hypercubes is furthered constructively and is featured with some interesting consequences for when $a$ is a positive, even integer. Additionally, progress is made towards obtaining cycle decompositions using the longest admissible cycle lengths with the incorporation of a more explicit starting point from which such decompositions of $Q_{2an}$ can be studied further., Comment: 146 pages, 38 figures, submitted to Discrete Mathematics journal

4. Scanning spin probe based on magnonic vortex quantum cavities

Abstract

Performing nanoscale scanning electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) requires three essential ingredients. First, a static magnetic field together to field gradients to Zeeman split the electronic energy levels with spatial resolution. Second, a radiofrequency (rf) magnetic field capable of inducing spin transitions. Finally, a sensitive detection method to quantify the energy absorbed by spins. This is usually achieved by combining externally applied magnetic fields with inductive coils or cavities, fluorescent defects or scanning probes. Here, we theoretically propose the realization of a EPR scanning sensor merging all three characteristics into a single device: the vortex core stabilized in ferromagnetic thin-film discs. On one hand, the vortex ground state generates a significant static magnetic field and field gradients. On the other hand, the precessional motion of the vortex core around its equilibrium position produces a circularly polarized oscillating magnetic field, which is enough to produce spin transitions. Finally, the spin-magnon coupling broadens the vortex gyrotropic frequency, suggesting a direct measure of the presence of unpaired electrons. Moreover, the vortex core can be displaced by simply using external magnetic fields of a few mT, enabling EPR scanning microscopy with large spatial resolution. Our numerical simulations show that, by using low damping magnets, it is theoretically possible to detect single spins located on the disc's surface. Vortex nanocavities could also attain strong coupling to individual spin molecular qubits, with potential applications to mediate qubit-qubit interactions or to implement qubit readout protocols.

Abstract

Abstract Emergency general surgeons often provide care to severely ill patients requiring surgical interventions and intensive support. One of the primary drivers of morbidity and mortality is perioperative bleeding. In general, when addressing life threatening haemorrhage, blood transfusion can become an essential part of overall resuscitation. However, under all circumstances, indications for blood transfusion must be accurately evaluated. When patients decline blood transfusions, regardless of the reason, surgeons should aim to provide optimal care and respect and accommodate each patient’s values and target the best outcome possible given the patient’s desires and his/her clinical condition. The aim of this position paper was to perform a review of the existing literature and to provide comprehensive recommendations on organizational, surgical, anaesthetic, and haemostatic strategies that can be used to provide optimal peri-operative blood management, reduce, or avoid blood transfusions and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Abstract

The genetic basis of severe COVID-19 has been thoroughly studied, and many genetic risk factors shared between populations have been identified. However, reduced sample sizes from non-European groups have limited the discovery of population-specific common risk loci. In this second study nested in the SCOURGE consortium, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Americans, comprising a total of 4702 hospitalized cases recruited by SCOURGE and seven other participating studies in the COVID-19 Host Genetic Initiative. We identified four genome-wide significant associations, two of which constitute novel loci and were first discovered in Latin American populations (BAZ2B and DDIAS). A trans-ethnic meta-analysis revealed another novel cross-population risk locus in CREBBP. Finally, we assessed the performance of a cross-ancestry polygenic risk score in the SCOURGE admixed American cohort. This study constitutes the largest GWAS for COVID-19 hospitalization in admixed Latin Americans conducted to date. This allowed to reveal novel risk loci and emphasize the need of considering the diversity of populations in genomic research.

Abstract

Nowadays, due to the increase in traffic accidents, research has emphasized the importance of vision in driving. This research aims to study the relationships between publications and their corresponding authors and identify the different research areas on vision and safe driving that have awakened interest in researchers. Web of Science was the database utilized for searching publications from the first paper published (1957) to December 2021, selecting the keywords: driv*, safety, and vision. The publications’ analysis was made using the CitNetExplorer, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace software. A total of 3,777 publications and 3,887 citation networks were found. In 2019, there was a total of 391 publications and 15 citation networks. The most cited publication was “Older Drivers and Cataract: Driving Habits and Crash Risk” published by Owsley et al. in 1999, with 76 as citation index. By the clustering function, five groups were found that cover the main research areas in this field: ocular movements, detection systems, road safety, and age. The citation network offers both, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the main articles. Being a multidisciplinary field of study, current research emphasizes the importance of eye movements while driving, the visual impairment in elderly drivers, and the new video-based detection systems.

We consider the effective evolution of a phenomenological model from FLRW supersymmetric quantum cosmology with a scalar field. The scalar field acts as a clock and inflaton. Abstract

Cavity photons and ferromagnetic spins excitations can exchange information coherently in hybrid architectures, at speeds set by their mutual coupling strength. Speed enhancement is usually achieved by optimizing the geometry of the electromagnetic cavity. Here we show that the geometry of the ferromagnet plays also an important role, by setting the fundamental frequency of the magnonic resonator. Using focused ion beam patterning, we vary the aspect ratio of different Permalloy samples reaching operation frequencies above 10 GHz while working at low external magnetic fields. Additionally, we perform broad band ferromagnetic resonance measurements and cavity experiments that demonstrate that the magnon-photon coupling strength can be estimated using either open transmission lines or resonant cavities, yielding very good agreement. Finally, we describe a simple theoretical framework based on electromagnetic and micromagnetic simulations that successfully accounts for the experimental results. This approach can be used to design hybrid quantum systems exploiting whatsoever magnetostatic mode excited in ferromagnets of arbitrary size and shape and to tune their operation conditions.

Abstract

IntroductionDry eye disease (DED) is a prevalent condition causing ocular discomfort and visual disturbances, often managed with artificial tears. This study aimed to assess and compare the efficacy of eye drops containing Crosslinked Hyaluronic Acid (CHA) with liposomes and crocin and standard Hyaluronic Acid (HA) for DED management.MethodsA single-blind, longitudinal study was conducted on 24 participants (48 eyes), randomized to receive one of the two treatments. Ocular health measures, including the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and the standard patient evaluation of eye dryness (SPEED) scores, were assessed at baseline and 6 weeks post-treatment using the Ocular Surface Analyzer.ResultsCHA achieved a lipid layer thickness increase of 1.29 ± 1.08 Guillon pattern degree (p < 0.01), FNIBUT increase 0.64 ± 0.77 s (p < 0.01), MNIBUT increase1.28 ± 4.74 s (p = 0.19), OSDI decrease 11.72 ± 6.73 score points (p < 0.01) and SPEED decrease 1.16 ± 5.05 score points (p = 0.27). Significant reductions in the OSDI and SPEED scores post-treatment were observed with both treatments, indicating their effectiveness.ConclusionCHA with liposomes exhibits superior efficacy compared to standard HA eye drops in the management of DED. These findings highlight the potential for personalized treatment strategies incorporating CHA, indicating a more effective approach to DED management. However, further research is required to validate these results and investigate the long-term effects, which may pave the way for a data-driven and optimized approach to managing DED.

Abstract

In the field of complexity, new methodologies emerge, such as horizon architecture, which help to focus solutions that can be integrated to foster innovation in university education. Technologies are also opening up opportunities for training, such as virtual and augmented reality. This article aims to answer the question: What innovations do postgraduate students perceive in environments using horizons architecture to integrate virtual reality? In this project's training experience for students, the horizons architecture strategy was implemented with virtual reality resources and emerging technologies. Mixed method with three instruments (two semi-structured questionnaires and one Likert scale) were applied to 99 postgraduate students in Humanities and Education. Virtual and augmented reality supported the distance education modalities and project presentations. The findings account for: (a) open and systemic innovation, (b) creation of new products and services, (c) the potential of horizons architecture strategy, (d) motivation boosted by virtual and augmented reality, and (e) critical aspects of integrating virtual and augmented reality (technical and academic). This study may be valuable to teachers, entrepreneurs, and decision-makers interested in innovative educational environments and technologies, especially those in graduate education.

Abstract

The global consumption of highly (ultra) processed foods (HPFs) is increasing, and it is associated with non-communicable diseases. This study aimed to assess the validity and reliability of the Screening Questionnaire of Highly Processed Food Consumption (sQ-HPF). This study included 94 adults. Sociodemographic data were collected, and anthropometric and blood pressure measurements were performed. The sQ-HPF was translated into Turkish and culturally adapted. Dietary intake was assessed using three-day dietary records. Factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha were used to evaluate the validity and consistency of the sQ-HPF. Test–retest reliability was assessed with the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Three items from the original sQ-HPF were excluded due to low factor loadings. The Kaiser–Meyer Olkin (KMO) coefficient for the measure of sample adequacy was found to be 0.642 and Bartlett’s test of sphericity was found to be significant (p < 0.001). A significant correlation was found between the sQ-HPF score and HPF consumption derived from the 3-day dietary records (p < 0.05). Cronbach’s alpha was found to be 0.65. Individuals with higher sQ-HPF scores consumed a significantly greater percentage of energy from HPFs (kcal/day) (p < 0.001). The sQ-HPF demonstrated good test–retest reliability (ICC = 0.76). The Turkish version of the sQ-HPF is a valid and reliable tool for assessing HPF consumption patterns and can be used in epidemiological and clinical studies.

Abstract

Background The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the SARS-CoV-2, can be effectively managed with diagnostic tools such as RT-qPCR. However, it can produce false-negative results due to viral mutations and RNA secondary structures from the target gene sequence. Methods With High Performance Computing, the complete SARS-CoV-2 genome was obtained from the GenBank/GISAID to generate consensus sequences to design primers/probes for RT-qPCR. ORF8 gene was selected, meanwhile, E and N and RNAse P were according to CDC protocol. Nasopharyngeal swab samples were collected from patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. Total RNA was purified according MagMAX kit, it was used in single, and multiplex RT-qPCR. To avoid templated secondary structures, compensate nucleotide proportions and improve Ct values, a solution composed of tetraethylammonium chloride and dimethyl sulfoxide and other with corresponding to dNTPs proportions in accordance SARS-CoV-2 genome were included. Sensitivity and specificity according to Ct values were determined with the Caret package in R software. Results 126,576 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from January to December 2020 comprised a database. From this, a region near of 5′ ORF8 gene showed three stem-loops was used for primers/FAM-probe. 49 samples were obtained, from them, 22 were positive to gene selected regions. Interestingly, samples from October to November 2020 were positive for all regions, however, in January 2021 different results were observed in ORF8. An improvement in Ct with the adjuvant solutions was determined in all samples with others SARS-CoV-2 primers/probes, for both single and multiplex RT-qPCR. The inclusion of the denaturing solution in single RT-qPCR increased its sensitivity with respect to the commercial method, while in multiplex the opposite was generated. Conclusions Including adjuvant solutions to prevent the formation of RNA secondary structures and the adjustment of the nucleotide ratios of SARS-CoV-2 improved single and multiplex RT-qPCR for viral identification, demonstrating its potential application in health public.

Abstract

We study two homogeneous supersymmetric extensions for the $f(R)$ modified gravity model of Starobinsky with the FLRW metric. The actions are defined in terms of a superfield $\mathcal{R}$ that contains the FLRW scalar curvature. One model has N=1 local supersymmetry, and its bosonic sector is the Starobinsky action; the other action has N=2, its bosonic sector contains, in additional to Starobinsky, a massive scalar field without self-interaction. As expected, the bosonic sectors of these models are consistent with cosmic inflation, as we show by solving numerically the classical dynamics. Inflation is driven by the $R^2$ term during the large curvature regime. In the N=2 case, the additional scalar field remains in a low energy state during inflation. Further, by means of an additional superfield, we write equivalent tensor-scalar-like actions from which we can give the Hamiltonian formulation., Comment: 17 pages, 2 figures
