Abstract

The modified Rodrigues parameters (MRP) consist of two numerically different triplets that, by switching between them, yield a minimal globally non-singular attitude description with advantageous properties. The MRP space results from the Alexandroff compactification of the three-dimensional Euclidean space and is a double cover of $\mathrm{SO(3)}$. By capitalizing on instrumental properties of the covering map, this paper proposes a novel hybrid dynamic path-lifting mechanism to unambiguously and robustly extract the MRP from the attitude space. This hybrid solution allows applying an MRP-based feedback controller to the attitude dynamics in the base space while preserving its asymptotic and exponential stability properties. Furthermore, by profiting from the distinct characteristics of the MRP, the resulting interconnection is impervious to the unwinding phenomenon. The design and validation of an MRP-based controller exemplify the application of the proposed algorithm alongside the novel results for equivalence of stability between spaces. The solution renders the attitude space tracking dynamics robustly globally exponentially stable, demonstrating the potential of this novel methodology.

Abstract

We revisit the classical problem of electromagnetic wave refraction from a lossless dielectric to a lossy conductor, where both media are considered to be non-magnetic, linear, isotropic and homogeneous. We derive the Fresnel coefficients of the system and the Poynting vectors at the interface, in order to compute the reflectance and transmittance of the system. We use a particular parametrisation of the referred Fresnel coefficients so as to make a connection with the ones obtained for refraction by an interface between two lossless media. This analysis allows the discussion of an actual application, namely the Fresnel polarisation of infra-red radiation by elemental bismuth, based on the concept of pseudo Brewster's angle., Comment: Version accepted by The European Physical Journal B

Abstract

This study evaluates the economic, social, environmental, and institutional impacts of the Geographical Indication (GI) of the Indication of Origin (IO) type in the Abaíra Microregion, Bahia, Brazil, and its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDGs 2, 4, 8, 12, and 16. The research focuses on assessing the long-term sustainability effects of the Abaíra GI on local communities and territories after its recognition in 2014. Using an exploratory, qualitative approach, this study applies the Economic, Social, and Environmental Impact Assessment Methodology for GIs developed by EMBRAPA, along with semi-structured interviews and field visits with local producers and cooperative members. The analysis highlights the importance of post-GI sustainability assessment and identifies significant impacts on local economic development, cultural preservation, and environmental management. The research reveals improvements in product visibility and commercial value, as well as the adoption of sustainable and innovative practices by local cooperatives and producers. Among the key findings are the strengthening of local traditions, enhanced product quality, and increased market access despite challenges such as rural exodus. When compared with Embrapa Grape and Wine's methodology, this study proposes a comprehensive framework for evaluating other GIs. Additionally, the results show that support from SEBRAE and educational institutions through training and technical assistance has positively impacted territorial conditions, contributing to the broader goals of sustainable development.
