Introduction Vesicovaginal fistula can occur after delivery, gynaecologic or urologic surgery, irradiation therapy or as destruction caused by a tumour or trauma. The main problem after irradiation is decreased elasticity of the tissue around the fistula. We present our experience in the treatment of three patients with vesicovaginal fistula using a labia maiora skin flap. Case Outline From May 2007 to January 2008 three patients with vesicovaginal fistula were treated using labia maiora skin flap. The fistulae occurred after mean 19 months (11, 20 and 26 months) following irradiation therapy applied to treat malignant disease. The mean age of the patients was 54 years (47, 53 and 62 years). The mean diameter of the fistulae was 3.5 cm (2, 4 and 4.5 cm). Using transvaginal approch, all devitalized and fibrous tissue was removed with the closure of the bladder wall. The labia maiora skin flap with good vascularization was transposed to close the defect and anastomozed to the vagina. The mean follow-up was 16 months (13, 17 and 18 months). Labia maiora skin flap size was mean 3.7 cm (2.6, 3.7 and 4.8 cm). We achieved satisfactory outcome in all patients. There were neither postoperative complications nor fistula recurrence. Conclusion Labia maiora skin flap presents a good alternative for surgical treatment of vesicovaginal fistula. The flap is more adequate for larger defects and for the repair of fibrously changed vaginal wall which is present after irradiation therapy. .

Investigou-se especialmente o estatuto do pronome 'ele' na paranóia. O trabalho mostra que o entendimento do que ''é (são) ele(s)'' é elemento essencial para a elucidação da questão da estranheza na psicose e da construção da atividade delirante. O estudo da dimensão referencial da linguagem se revela então particularmente importante. Ao longo do texto são apontadas algumas questões e articulações entre a análise procedida, a psicanálise, a fenomenologia e a comunicação lingüística, tendo como hipótese essencial que a psicose consiste na perda e reconstrução narcísica da função referencial da linguagem.

The share of solar power in Brazil's electrical grid has rapidly increased, relieving GHG emissions and diversifying energy sources for greater energy security. Besides that, solar resource is susceptible to climate change, adding uncertainty to electrical grid resilience. This study uses satellite and reanalysis data to evaluate the performance of CMIP6 models in replicating and predicting surface solar irradiance (SSR) in Brazil. The results from the most reliable models indicate an increase in SSR by 2% to 8% in most regions, with a decrease of around 3% in the South. These findings highlight the potential for increased photovoltaic (PV) yield if backed by supportive public policies while underlining the importance of uncertainty assessment of climate models., (© 2024. Trichomes are common in plants from dry environments, and despite their recognized role in protection and defense, little is known about their role as absorptive structures and in other aspects of leaf ecophysiology. We combine anatomical and ecophysiological data to evaluate how trichomes affect leaf gas exchange and water balance during drought. We studied two congeneric species with pubescent leaves which co-occur in Brazilian Caatinga: Croton blanchetianus (dense trichomes) and Croton adenocalyx (sparse trichomes). We found a novel foliar water uptake (FWU) pathway in C. blanchetianus composed of stellate trichomes and underlying epidermal cells and sclereids that interconnect the trichomes from both leaf surfaces. The water absorbed by these trichomes is redistributed laterally by pectin protuberances on mesophyll cell walls. This mechanism enables C. blanchetianus leaves to absorb water more efficiently than C. adenocalyx. Consequently, the exposure of C. blanchetianus to dew during drought improved its leaf gas exchange and water status more than C. adenocalyx. C. blanchetianus trichomes also increase their leaf capacity to reflect light and maintain lower temperatures during drought. Objective: We aim to study association between neutrophile to lymphocyte (NLR) and platelet to lymphocyte (PLR) ratios and disease activity, and their value to predict bDMARD response. Methods: A set of spondylarthritis (SpA) patients under bDMARD registered in the Reuma.pt registry was studied. Sociodemographic, clinical and laboratorial variables were assessed on bDMARD initiation, 6, 12, 18 and 24 months (M) thereafter. Univariable and multivariable generalized estimation equations models assessed associations with disease activity. The NLR and PLR predictive value was assessed using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models. Results: A total of 170 patients were included. Most were male (54.7%), with a predominantly axial phenotype (84.7%). Significant associations were observed between NLR [B=1.55, 95% confidence interval (CI) = (1.38; 1.74)] and PLR [(B=1.16, 95% CI = (1.09; 1.24)] with ASDAS-CRP (p < 0.001). Both baseline ratios predicted ∆ ASDAS-CRP ≥ 1.1 at 6 months [OR = 2.20, 95% CI = (1.21, 4.00) for NLR; OR = 1.02, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.04) for PLR, p < 0.01)]. PLR was a significant predictor of ∆ ASDAS-CRP ≥ 1.1 in all timepoints [OR (12 M) = 1.02, 95% CI = (1.00, 1.03), p < 0.05; OR (18M) = 1.02, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.03), p < 0.001; OR (24M) = 1.01, 95% CI = (1.01, 1.02), p < 0.01]. Conclusion: NLR and PLR were associated with disease activity during the follow up of these patients. They seem to be significant predictors of therapeutic response to bDMARD in naïve SpA patients.

Plant community succession is generally approached with phytosociological methods, but field surveys are time-consuming, expensive, and limited to several of sites. Remote sensing offers an efficient and economical way to analyze vegetation on large extensions and in inaccessible areas. Most studies addressing remote sensing and tree community succession refer to forest physiognomies. We investigated whether structural changes that occur in non-forest physiognomies are identified by multispectral sensor images (OLI-Landsat). Thirteen 0.1-ha plots were set up in Caatinga fragments aging 10-15, 20-25, 30-35, 40-45 and >50 years to calculate the total density of individuals (TD), mean canopy height (H), total basal area (G) and total aboveground biomass (AGB). We performed correlation analyses between these structural descriptors and eight remote sensing variables (reflectance data and spectral indices) obtained from Landsat images at the end of the rainy season and during the dry season. Blue and short-wave infrared reflectances were negatively correlated with mean height, basal area and biomass, regardless of the analyzed scene (coefficients between -0.58 and -0.79). The litter layer (a non-photosynthetic vegetation component) and the soil exposure are important factors influencing the spectral data.

Background: Anakinra is a recombinant interleukin-1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist used in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA), refractory Kawasaki disease (KD) and cryopyrin-associated autoinflammatory syndrome (CAPS). Anakinra associated hepatotoxicity, while rare, has been described in several cases in daily practice. ​In this case series the authors describe three pediatric patients with this side effect in the setting of severe macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) in KD and sJIA., Case Presentation: The first patient was a 12-year-old boy who presented with fever, maculo-papular exanthema and polyarthralgia. Tonsillitis, distal limb induration and tender cervical lymph nodes were observed. Erythrocyte-sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP), ferritin (11,975 ng/mL), D-dimers (5,98 mg/L FEU) and soluble CD25 (3645 pg/mL) levels were elevated. Exclusion of sepsis / toxic shock syndrome warranted introduction of IV methylprednisolone and immunoglobulin (IG IV), with partial response. A MAS secondary to KD was assumed, and anakinra 2 mg/kg/day was introduced. Twenty days later he developed new-onset nausea and severe cyto-cholestasis, normalizing after 2 months of drug discontinuation. Posterior onset of polyarthritis and evanescent lead to a final diagnosis of sJIA. The second patient was a 2-year-old boy with a 10-day history of fevers, generalized rash, hepatosplenomegaly and strawberry tongue. Leucocytosis with neutrophilia and elevated CRP were observed. Initial treatment with IVIG in the setting of incomplete KD was ineffective. Mild anaemia, leukopenia and very high serum ferritin (maximum 26,128 ng/mL) ensued. Presumptive sJIA associated MAS was treated with IV methylprednisolone and anakinra 2 mg/kg/day, with prompt response. Four weeks later transaminitis was detected, and temporary anakinra suspension led to normalisation of laboratorial values. The third case related to a 4-year-old boy presenting with fever, maculopapular rash and cervical lymphadenopathy. CRP and ESR were elevated, and KD was diagnosed. IVIG and methylprednisolone were initiated with clinical worsening, warranting for anakinra introduction at 2 mg/kg/day. After three weeks, liver enzymes progressively elevated, resolving on 2 weeks of anakinra discontinuation., Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case series describing anakinra associated hepatotoxicity in pediatric patients with rheumatic diseases other than sJIA, bringing additional insight to therapeutic monitoring in patients undergoing this treatment., (© 2023. Introduction: Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (IMNM) is characterized by acute or subacute, severe proximal muscle weakness and myofiber necrosis with minimal inflammatory cell infiltrate observed on muscle biopsy. On the other hand, sarcoidosis is characterised by the presence of non-caseating granulomas that can develop in several organs., Case Report: We present the unique case of a 49-year-old woman, with no previous medical history, who had a rare concomitant occurrence of IMNM and pulmonary sarcoidosis. This condition was successfully treated with a combination of corticosteroids and rituximab along with rehabilitation program., Discussion: This association has been reported in only two previous case reports. This highlights the importance of further research on the connection between sarcoidosis and other forms of inflammatory myopathies.

Although a growing body of literature recognises the importance of rarity for biodiversity conservation, it is unclear how the interaction of different forms of rarity, extrinsic causes of extinction, and protection affect species' vulnerability. Here we addressed the extinction vulnerability of 2203 shrub and tree species of the South American savanna (SAS). For this, species were attributed a form of rarity, a synergistic risk index (SRI), and a protection index (PI). The SRI combines three extrinsic causes of extinction (climate hazard, fire frequency, and human footprint). The PI is the ratio between the number of a species occurrences within protected areas and the total number of occurrences in the SAS. By combining the SRI and PI, we classified common and rare species into five vulnerability classes. Some regions of the SAS show high values of climate hazard, fire frequency, human footprint, and SRI. Each extrinsic cause of extinction is differently distributed across the SAS and shows no or low spatial congruence with the SRI. Many species show a low ratio of occurrences within PAs, which in combination with high SRI results in high vulnerability to extinction. Surprisingly, the number of common species in the higher vulnerability classes is higher than of rare species. Common and rare species in different vulnerability classes occur in somewhat different locations across the SAS and mainly constitute spatially incongruent centres with high species richness. Introduction: Immune-mediated skin lesions (IMSL) can be very disabling leading to treatment discontinuation. Although these lesions have rarely been previously described, the true incidence is unknown., Objective: To explore the cumulative incidence, management and outcomes of IMSL related to bDMARD in a large cohort of patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases. To explore possible associations and risk factors for IMSL development., Methods: A retrospective single-center study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondylarthritis (SpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA) that had been treated with at least one bDMARD for at least 6 months was conducted. IMSL related to bDMARD characteristics and outcomes were collected., Results: A total of 989 patients with RA, SpA and PsA were included. Twenty-seven patients (2.7%) presented IMSL potentially related to bDMARD, being psoriasis the most common IMSL (n=12, 44.4%), followed by drug-induced lupus erythematosus (n=6), alopecia areata (n=3) and leukocytoclastic vasculitis (n=2). IMSL led to withdrawal of bDMARD in 18 of the 27 patients (66.7%). Patients with IMSL had younger age at diagnosis (p=0.038), longer disease duration (p=0.018), longer duration of bDMARD treatment (p=0.008), and higher number of previous bDMARDs (p < 0.001) than patients without IMSL. In the group of patients with IMSL there was a significantly higher percentage of patients treated with adalimumab (p < 0.001). In multivariate regression model, the number of previous bDMARDs (OR 2.13, 95%CI 1.47-3.10, p < 0.001) and treatment with adalimumab (OR 4.60, 95%CI 1.96-10.80 , p < 0.001) were statistically significant predictive factors for IMSL development., Conclusion: In our study, IMSL related to bDMARDs had an estimated cumulative incidence of 2.7%. Younger age at diagnosis, longer disease duration, longer duration of bDMARD treatment, higher number of previous bDMARDs and treatment with adalimumab were independently associated with an increased risk of IMSL development.

The climate is changing. At this stage, it is important to specify an 'extreme' climate and identify patterns that indicate its potential harm worldwide, including the coastal zones. Herein, we considered extremes based on the "Peaks Over Threshold" method from the "Extreme Value Theory". We looked after geographical patterns of surface air temperature (SAT) extremes (e.g., T max , T min , daily temperature range (DTR), and inter-daily temperature range) over the last 40 years throughout the Brazilian coast. Overall, we found a trend increase in intensity and frequency, but the duration was barely affected. The latitudinal pattern of extremes and the temperatures considered extremes followed the settled perception that areas in higher latitudes will be more affected by the extent of warming. Additionally, the seasonal pattern of DTR demonstrated to be a good approach to make inferences about air mass changes, but joint analyses on extremes with other atmospheric variables are desirable. Given the potential effects of extreme climates on society and natural systems over the world, our study highlights the urge for action to mitigate the effects of the increase in SAT in coastal zones., (© 2023. Introduction: Anti-tumor necrosis factor α (anti-TNFα) agents can potentially induce the anti-nuclear antibodies (ANA) development over time. Evidence of the real impact of these autoantibodies on clinical response to treatment in rheumatic patients is still scarce., Objectives: To explore the impact of ANA seroconversion induced by anti-TNFα therapy on clinical outcomes in biologic-naïve patients with Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), axial spondylarthritis (axSpA) and psoriatic arthritis (PsA)., Methods: An observational retrospective cohort study enrolling biologic-naïve patients with RA, axSpA and PsA who started their first anti-TNFα agent was conducted for 24 months(M). Sociodemographic data, laboratory findings, disease activity and physical function scores were collected at baseline, 12M and 24M. To examine the differences between the groups with and without ANA seroconversion, independent samples t-tests, Mann-Whitney U-tests and chi-square tests were performed. Linear and logistic regression models were used to assess the effects of ANA seroconversion on the clinical response to treatment., Results: A total of 432 patients with RA (N=185), axSpA (N=171) and PsA (N=66) were included. ANA seroconversion rate at 24M was 34.6%, 64.3% and 63.6% for RA, axSpA and PsA, respectively. Regarding sociodemographic and clinical data in RA and PsA patients, no statistically significant differences between groups with and without ANA seroconversion were found. In axSpA patients, ANA seroconversion was more frequent in patients with higher body mass index (p=0.017) and significantly less frequent in patients treated with etanercept (p=0.01). Regarding disease activity, DAS28 for RA patients and ASDAS-CRP for axSpA patients were significantly higher in ANA seroconversion group at 12M (p=0.017 and p=0.009, respectively). For PsA patients, CDAI was significantly higher in ANA seroconversion group at 24M (p=0.043). Overall switching rate of biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (bDMARD) was significantly higher in the ANA seroconversion group over time (p=0.025). For RA patients, ANA seroconversion predicted DAS28 (β=-0.21, 95%CI[-1.86;-0.18], p=0.017) at 12M., Conclusions: ANA seroconversion induced by anti-TNFα agents could interfere in clinical response of patients with rheumatic diseases. The presence of these autoantibodies can be considered as a potential predictor of poor treatment response and higher need for bDMARD switching over time.

Introduction: People with hazardous alcohol use are more susceptible to viral, bacterial, and fungal infections due to the effect of alcohol on immune system cell function. Metabolized ethanol reduces NAD + to NADH, affecting critical metabolic pathways. Here, our aim was to investigate whether alcohol is metabolized by bone marrow cells and if it impacts the metabolic pathways of leukocyte progenitor cells. This is said to lead to a qualitative and quantitative alteration of key metabolites which may be related to the immune response., Methods: We addressed this aim by using C57BL/6 mice under chronic ethanol administration and evaluating the metabolomic profile of bone marrow total cells by gas chromatography-coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS)., Results: We identified 19 metabolites. Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a rare form of systemic disease characterized by inflammation and necrotizing effects of the small and medium blood vessels. It is a vasculitis found in all age groups and both genders, although its etiology is unknown. The mean age at diagnosis is 40 years, consisting of an uncommon cause of vasculitis in people older than 65 years. It is the least common of the three antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis (EGPA, granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), and microscopic polyangiitis). The characteristic features of EGPA include extravascular eosinophilic granulomas, peripheral eosinophilia, and asthma, usually responsive to steroid treatment. In this article, we discuss a case of an 83-year-old male with a history of undetermined etiology of chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis. First hospitalized with the suspicion of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), based on worsening blood eosinophilia and unresolving respiratory symptoms, a suspicion for EGPA was raised. The development of an eosinophilic pleural effusion, later upon admission, was a predominant factor for its confirmation, as it constitutes a rare finding, only present in about 30% of patients. Laboratory tests showed elevated IgE, the presence of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies directed against myeloperoxidase with a perinuclear staining pattern (ANCA-MPO), and the absence of antiproteinase 3 (anti-PR3) ANCA, which were consistent with the diagnosis. A pleural biopsy was then made, revealing fibrosis with the presence of eosinophils, although with no evidence of granulomas. According to the most recent and accepted classification criteria, the "2022 American College of Rheumatology and European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (ACR/EULAR) for EGPA," this patient presented with a score of 13 (a score greater than or equal to 6 is needed for the classification of EGPA). Hence, a diagnosis of EGPA was assumed, and the patient was initiated on corticosteroid therapy, with a favorable response. The aim of this article is to present a rare case of EGPA diagnosis made at the age of 83 years old, although there was evidence that could point to this disease years before the diagnosis was made. Serositis is seen in approximately 12% of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), usually in the form of pleuritis or pericarditis. Peritoneal serositis with ascites is an extremely rare manifestation of SLE and ascites as initial manifestation of SLE is even rarer. Here, we describe a previously healthy 48-year-old female with periumbilical abdominal pain, constitutional symptoms, ascites, pleural effusions and raised CA-125 level as an initial manifestation of SLE, which led up to the diagnosis of pseudo-pseudo Meigs syndrome. PPMS is a rare manifestation of SLE and awareness of this entity among clinicians is crucial to ensure an early recognition and prompt treatment.

Objective: To compare the effectiveness and safety of original (Enbrel®) and biosimilar (Benepali®) etanercept in Biologic Disease-modifying Antirheumatic Drug (bDMARD)-naïve patients, measured by persistence rates over 36 months of follow-up., Methods: A retrospective multicentre observational study using data collected prospectively from The Rheumatic Diseases Portuguese Registry (Reuma.pt) was performed, including patients with: age ≥ 18 years old; diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Psoriatic Arthritis (PsA) or Spondyloarthritis (SpA) (axial or peripheral) with active disease and biologic-naïve who initiated treatment with etanercept as the first line biological treatment after 2010. Kaplan-Meyer and Cox regression were used to calculate the persistence rate in treatment. Disease activity at baseline and follow-up data at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months of treatment were compared. Causes for discontinuing therapy were summarized using descriptive statistics. Statistical significance was assumed for 2-sided p-values <0.05., Results: We included 1693 patients (413 on Benepali® and 1280 on Enbrel®): 864 diagnosed with RA, 335 with PsA and 494 with SpA. The 3-year persistence rates were not significantly different between both treatment groups in RA, PsA and SpA patients. In the adjusted Cox model, hazard ratios of discontinuation were not statistically different (p>0.05). The proportion of subjects in remission or low disease activity in each disease was similar in both groups. Overall, 535 (31.6%) patients discontinued etanercept (428 patients on Enbrel® and 107 patients on Benepali®). The major cause of discontinuation was inefficacy (57.8%). No differences for the occurrence of inefficacy or adverse effects were found between treatment groups., Conclusions: Benepali® and Enbrel® demonstrated similar effectiveness and safety in RA, PsA and SpA in our cohort of patients. These data corroborate that the original and biosimilar drugs have similar quality characteristics and biological activity.

Reservoirs of hydropower plants (HPP) can amend water, energy, and food security in semi-arid regions. However, during severe droughts, the priority of energy demand leads to critical conditions of water availability. To reduce water use for energy, one possible measure is the adoption of solar power, an abundant energy source in semi-arid regions. This study assessed the influence of adding floating photovoltaic power (PV) in the large-scale reservoir of Sobradinho HPP, located in the São Francisco River (SFR), in Brazil, from 2009 to 2018. The simulated scenarios varied the installed PV power capacity from 50 to 1000 MW. For each scenario, water allocation was modified based on the solar-hydro equivalence that restrained the historical outflow of Sobradinho to maintain water in the reservoir. Besides, a diverse operation rule for the reservoirs in cascade of SFR was adopted to avoid ecological impacts of low streamflow. The scenarios were assessed in water security, solar-hydro electricity output, capacity factor of the powerplant, water and energy losses by evaporation and spilled water. Results show that a PV system starting from 250 MW was necessary to improve water security during the severe drought, reserving 0.7-2.3 of the annual water demand. In addition, the capacity factor was optimized from 29% to 34-47%. However, as the HPPs installed at SFR work as one system, the constrain of the river flow reduced the hydroelectricity by 4.4% for 750 MW. We concluded that PV significantly influenced water security and ecological conditions of SFR, with benefits in the range of 250-750 MW. The research provides assessment on substituting hydro for solar power on the operation of reservoirs in cascade and identifies the correlated benefits in social and ecological aspects. Gas inside wood plays an important role in plant functioning, but there has been no study examining the adaptive nature of gas inside wood across plants differing in biomechanical demands. Using a comparative approach, we measured gas volumetric content, xylem's anatomical traits and wood density of 15 tree and 16 liana species, to test whether gas content varies between these plant types strongly differing in their biomechanical demands. We asked (i) whether trees and lianas differ in gas content and (ii) how anatomical traits and wood density are related to gas content. Lianas had significantly less gas content in their branches compared with tree species. In tree species, gas content scaled positively with fiber, vessel and xylem cross-sectional area and fiber and vessel diameter, and negatively with dry-mass density. When pooling trees and lianas together, fiber cross-sectional area was the strongest predictor of gas content, with higher xylem cross-sectional area of fiber associated with higher gas content. In addition, we showed, through a simple analytical model, that gas inside wood increases the minimum branch diameter needed to prevent rupture, and this effect was stronger on trees compared with lianas. Our results support the view that gas inside wood plays an important role in the evolution of biomechanical functioning in different plant forms. Gas inside wood may also play an important role in physiological activities such as water transport, storage, photosynthesis and respiration, but it is still unknown whether these roles are or are not secondary to the mechanical support., (© The Author(s) 2020. The relative importance of different community assembly mechanisms varies depending on the environment. According to the stress-dominance hypothesis (SDH), assembly mechanisms range from strong abiotic filtering to competition as the environment becomes more favourable. Most evidence for the SDH comes from studies in gradients of conditions (i.e. abiotic environmental factors that influence the functioning of organisms but are not consumed by them). However, we hypothesized that in resource gradients, competition increases as abiotic filtering becomes stronger. To test our hypothesis, we set up eight plots at different sites along an abiotic severity gradient in the Brazilian semi-arid region (BSAR). In each plot, we identified and measured each woody plant species found, and we recorded 11 functional traits of the main species, dividing the traits into alpha (competition effects) and beta (abiotic filtering effects). We investigated the presence of phylogenetic signal in the traits, the community phylogenetic and phenotypic patterns, and associated the variation in these patterns with the availability of water and soil nutrients. We found phylogenetic signal for most (91%) of the traits analysed. The phylogenetic patterns varied from clustered in stressful sites to random or overdispersed in favourable sites, and we concluded that these phylogenetic patterns were the result of historical processes influencing community assembly in different environments in the BSAR. In general, the phenotypic patterns varied from clustered at the most stressful end to random at less stressful sites. Our results show that in resource gradients, any restriction of the resource (hydric or edaphic) intensifies abiotic filtering and, at the same time, increases the competitive hierarchy among species. On the other hand, stochastic processes seem to have a stronger influence under more favourable abiotic conditions, where abiotic filtering and competition are weaker. Foliar uptake of dew is likely an important mechanism of water acquisition for plants from tropical dry environments. However, there is still limited experimental evidence describing the anatomical pathways involved in this process and the effects of this water subsidy on the maintenance of gas exchange and leaf lifespan of species from seasonally dry tropical vegetation such as the Brazilian caatinga. We performed scanning electron, bright-field and confocal microscopic analyses and used apoplastic tracers to examine the foliar water uptake (FWU) routes in four woody species with different foliar phenology and widely distributed in the caatinga. Leaves of plants subjected to water stress were exposed to dew simulation to evaluate the effects of the FWU on leaf water potentials, gas exchange and leaf lifespan. All species absorbed water through their leaf cuticles and/or peltate trichomes but FWU capacity differed among species. Leaf wetting by dew increased leaf lifespan duration up to 36 days compared to plants in the drought treatment. A positive effect on leaf gas exchange and new leaf production was only observed in the anisohydric and evergreen species. The solar radiation is the primary energy resource for several human activities. Nowadays, the environmental issues and climate concerning are boosting the substitution of fossil fuel resources by renewable energy resources, including the adoption of solar energy for power generation. Although the solar power stands for 0.2% of the Brazilian electricity mix, the solar energy resource in the Northeastern Brazilian region (NEB) is higher than in countries where the solar energy market is already consolidated. Nowadays, it is crucial to deepen the comprehension of solar resource time and spatial variability in NEB to support and promote the solar energy market and save water to other purposes than power generation. Wood properties influence the leaf life span (LL) of tree crowns. As lignin is an important component of wood and the water transport system, we investigated its relationship with embolism resistance and the LL of several tree species in a seasonally dry tropical ecosystem. We determined total lignin and the monomer contents of guaiacyl (G) and syringyl (S) and related them to wood traits and xylem vulnerability to embolism (Ψ 50 ) for the most common species of the Brazilian semiarid, locally known as Caatinga. Leaf life span was negatively related to Ψ 50 and positively related to S : G, which was negatively related to Ψ 50 . This means that greater S : G increases LL by reducing Ψ 50 . Lignin content was not correlated with any variable. We found two apparently unrelated axes of drought resistance. One axis, associated with lignin monomeric composition, increases LL in the dry season as a result of lower xylem embolism vulnerability. The other, associated with wood density and stem water content, helps leafless trees to withstand drought and allows them to resprout at the end of the dry season. Type B hemophilia usually affects patients with a family history of this disease and has a typical clinical picture. However, in the present case it appeared in a patient outside the typical age with no family history of hematologic malignancies and with an unusual clinical picture.

The reactive-oxygen-species-(ROS)-generating-enzyme Nox2 is essential for leukocyte anti-microbial activity. However its role in cellular redox homeostasis and, consequently, in modulating intracellular signaling pathways remains unclear. Herein, we show Nox2 activation favors thioredoxin-1 (TRX-1)/p40phox interaction, which leads to exclusion of TRX-1 from the nucleus. In contrast, the genetic deficiency of Nox2 or its pharmacological inhibition with apocynin (APO) results in reductive stress after lipopolysaccharide-(LPS)-cell stimulation, which causes nuclear accumulation of TRX-1 and enhanced transcription of inflammatory mediators through nuclear-factor-(NF)-κB. The NF-κB overactivation is prevented by TRX-1 oxidation using inhibitors of thioredoxin reductase-1 (TrxR-1). The Nox2/TRX-1/NF-κB intracellular signaling pathway is involved in the pathophysiology of chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) and sepsis. In fact, TrxR-1 inhibition prevents nuclear accumulation of TRX-1 and LPS-stimulated hyperproduction of tumor-necrosis-factor-(TNF)-α by monocytes and neutrophils purified from blood of CGD patients, who have deficient Nox2 activity. TrxR-1 inhibitors, either lanthanum chloride (LaCl 3 ) or auranofin (AUR), also increase survival rates of mice undergoing cecal-ligation-and-puncture-(CLP). Therefore, our results identify a hitherto unrecognized Nox2-mediated intracellular signaling pathway that contributes to hyperinflammation in CGD and in septic patients. Additionally, we suggest that TrxR-1 inhibitors could be potential drugs to treat patients with sepsis, particularly in those with CGD.

Dew formation is common in several regions of the world, but in arid and semiarid regions dew may represent an important water source for plants. In this study, we tested whether the leaves of a common shrub in the semiarid region of Brazil, Combretum leprosum Mart. (Combretaceae) absorb dew. We also identified the leaf anatomical structures that are involved in this process and tested whether dew absorption favours hydration of leaf tissues in both field and greenhouse experiments. The translucent and shiny leaf trichomes of C. leprosum absorbed dew. Leaf water absorption through hydrophilic trichomes and the presence of hydrophilic polysaccharides in C. leprosum increased its leaf water status. The presence of paraveinal mesophyll and the role of this tissue in the redistribution of water in the leaf are shown for the first time in Combretaceae.

Early-life environmental insults have been shown to promote long-term development of chronic non-communicable diseases, including metabolic disturbances and mental illnesses. As such, premature consumption of high-sugar foods has been associated to early onset of detrimental outcomes, whereas underlying mechanisms are still poorly understood. In the present study, we sought to investigate whether early and sustained exposure to high-sucrose diet promotes metabolic disturbances that ultimately might anticipate neurological injuries. At postnatal day 21, weaned male rats started to be fed a standard chow (10 % sucrose, CTR) or a high-sucrose diet (25 % sucrose, HSD) for 9 weeks prior to euthanasia at postnatal day 90. HSD did not alter weight gain and feed efficiency between groups, but increased visceral, non-visceral and brown adipose tissue accumulation. HSD rats demonstrated elevated blood glucose levels in both fasting and fed states, which were associated to impaired glucose tolerance. Peripheral insulin sensitivity did not change, whereas hepatic insulin resistance was supported by increased serum triglyceride levels, as well as higher TyG index values. Assessment of hippocampal gene expression showed endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress pathways were activated in HSD rats, as compared to CTR. HSD rats had overexpression of unfolded protein response sensors, PERK and ATF6; ER chaperone, PDIA2 and apoptosis-related genes, CHOP and Caspase 3; but decreased expression of chaperone GRP78. Finally, HSD rats demonstrated impaired neuromuscular function and anxious behavior, but preserved cognitive parameters. In conclusion, our data indicate that early exposure to HSD promote metabolic disturbances, which disrupt hippocampus homeostasis and might precociously affect its neurobehavioral functions.

Seasonally dry tropical plant formations (SDTF) are likely to exhibit phylogenetic clustering owing to niche conservatism driven by a strong environmental filter (water stress), but heterogeneous edaphic environments and life histories may result in heterogeneity in degree of phylogenetic clustering. We investigated phylogenetic patterns across ecological gradients related to water availability (edaphic environment and climate) in the Caatinga, a SDTF in Brazil. Caatinga is characterized by semiarid climate and three distinct edaphic environments - sedimentary, crystalline, and inselberg -representing a decreasing gradient in soil water availability. We used two measures of phylogenetic diversity: Net Relatedness Index based on the entire phylogeny among species present in a site, reflecting long-term diversification; and Nearest Taxon Index based on the tips of the phylogeny, reflecting more recent diversification. We also evaluated woody species in contrast to herbaceous species. The main climatic variable influencing phylogenetic pattern was precipitation in the driest quarter, particularly for herbaceous species, suggesting that environmental filtering related to minimal periods of precipitation is an important driver of Caatinga biodiversity, as one might expect for a SDTF. Woody species tended to show phylogenetic clustering whereas herbaceous species tended towards phylogenetic overdispersion. We also found phylogenetic clustering in two edaphic environments (sedimentary and crystalline) in contrast to phylogenetic overdispersion in the third (inselberg). We conclude that while niche conservatism is evident in phylogenetic clustering in the Caatinga, this is not a universal pattern likely due to heterogeneity in the degree of realized environmental filtering across edaphic environments. Thus, SDTF, in spite of a strong shared environmental filter, are potentially heterogeneous in phylogenetic structuring. Our results support the need for scientifically informed conservation strategies in the Caatinga and other SDTF regions that have not previously been prioritized for conservation in order to take into account this heterogeneity.

This study aimed at investigating the acute effects of aerobic exercise on endothelium-dependent vasomotor function of rat aorta, as well as mechanisms involved in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) bioactivity. Wistar rats were assigned to either a resting control (C, n = 21) or acutely exercised (E, n = 21) groups (60 min, 55-60% of maximum speed). After exercise, thoracic aorta was excised and cut into rings. Two rings were promptly applied to evaluate vasomotor function and the rest of aorta was used for additional measurements. Acute exercise significantly improved maximum ACh-induced relaxation (C, 91.6 ± 1.2 vs. E, 102.4 ± 1.7%, p < 0.001) and sensitivity to ACh (C, -7.3 ± 0.06 vs. E, -7.3 ± 0.02 log M, p < 0.01), and was accompanied by significantly increases on serine1177 eNOS phosphorylation, reflecting its enhanced activation. However, acute exercise also enhanced both superoxide and hydrogen peroxide production, as assayed by dihydroethidium oxidation, lucigenin chemiluminescence and Amplex Red assays. We also provided evidence for Nox2 NADPH oxidase (Nox) activation through gp91dstat-mediated inhibition of superoxide signals. Enhanced arterial relaxations associated with acute exercise were nearly-completely prevented by catalase, suggesting a role for paracrine hydrogen peroxide. Despite increased detectable oxidant generation, cellular oxidative stress was not evident, as suggested by unaltered GSH:GSSG ratio and lipid hydroperoxides. Collectively, these results demonstrate that one bout of moderate aerobic exercise improves endothelial function by increasing NO bioavailability, while superoxide and hydrogen peroxide are generated in a controlled fashion., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Inc. Background: Bioabsorbable polymer stents with drug elution only on the abluminal surface may be safer than durable polymer drug-eluting stents., Objective: To report the experimental findings with the Inspiron™ stent - a bioabsorbable polymer-coated stent with sirolimus release from the abluminal surface only, recently approved for clinical use., Methods: 45 stents were implanted in the coronary arteries of 15 pigs. On day 28 after implantation, angiographic, intracoronary ultrasonographic and histomorphological data were collected. Five groups were analyzed: Group I (nine bare-metal stents); Group II (nine coated with bioabsorbable polymer on the luminal and abluminal surfaces); Group III (eight stents coated with bioabsorbable polymer on the abluminal surface); Group IV (nine stents with bioabsorbable polymer and sirolimus on the luminal and abluminal surfaces); and Group V (ten stents with bioabsorbable polymer and sirolimus only on the abluminal surface)., Results: The following results were observed for Groups I, II, III, IV and V, respectively: percentage stenosis of 29 ± 20; 36 ± 14; 33 ± 19; 22 ± 13 and 26 ± 15 (p = 0.443); late lumen loss (in mm) of 1.02 ± 0.60; 1.24 ± 0.48; 1.11 ± 0.54; 0.72 ± 0.44 and 0.78 ± 0.39 (p = 0.253); neointimal area (in mm(2)) of 2.60 ± 1.99; 2.74 ± 1.51; 2.74 ± 1.30; 1.30 ± 1.14 and 0.97 ± 0.84 (p = 0.001; Groups IV and V versus Groups I, II and III); and percentage neointimal area of 35 ± 25; 38 ± 18; 39 ± 19; 19 ± 18 and 15 ± 12 (p = 0.001; Groups IV and V versus Groups I, II and III). Injury and inflammation scores were low and with no differences between the groups., Conclusion: The Inspiron™ stent proved to be safe and was able to significantly inhibit the neointimal hyperplasia observed on day 28 after implantation in porcine coronary arteries.

The influence of ecological traits to the distribution and abundance of species is a prevalent issue in biodiversity science. Most studies of plant community assembly have focused on traits related to abiotic aspects or direct interactions among plants, with less attention paid to ignore indirect interactions, as those mediated by pollinators. Here, we assessed the influence of phylogeny, habitat, and floral morphology on ecological community structure in a clade of Neotropical lianas (tribe Bignonieae, Bignoniaceae). Our investigation was guided by the long-standing hypothesis that habitat specialization has promoted speciation in Bignonieae, while competition for shared pollinators influences species co-occurrence within communities. We analyzed a geo-referenced database for 94 local communities occurring across the Neotropics. The effect of floral morphological traits and abiotic variables on species co-occurrence was investigated, taking into account phylogenetic relationships. Habitat filtering seems to be the main process driving community assembly in Bignonieae, with environmental conditions limiting species distributions. Differing specialization to abiotic conditions might have evolved recently, in contrast to the general pattern of phylogenetic clustering found in communities of other diverse regions. We find no evidence that competition for pollinators affects species co-occurrence; instead, pollinator occurrence seems to have acted as an "environmental filter" in some habitats.

Previous studies from our group have demonstrated the protective effect of S-nitroso-N-acetylcysteine (SNAC) on the cardiovascular system in dyslipidemic LDLr-/- mice that develop atheroma and left ventricular hypertrophy after 15 days on a high fat diet. We have shown that SNAC treatment attenuates plaque development via the suppression of vascular oxidative stress and protects the heart from structural and functional myocardial alterations, such as heart arrhythmia, by reducing cardiomyocyte sensitivity to catecholamines. Here we investigate the ability of SNAC to modulate oxidative stress and cell survival in cardiomyocytes during remodeling and correlation with β₂-AR signaling in mediating this protection. Ventricular superoxide (O₂⁻) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) generation was measured by HPLC methods to allow quantification of dihydroethidium (DHE) products. Ventricular histological sections were stained using terminal dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) to identify nuclei with DNA degradation (apoptosis) and this was confirmed by Western blot for cleaved caspase-3 and caspase-7 protein expression. The findings show that O₂⁻ and H₂O₂ production and also cell apoptosis were increased during left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). SNAC treatment reduced oxidative stress during on cardiac remodeling, measured by decreased H₂O₂ and O₂⁻ production (65% and 52%, respectively), and a decrease in the ratio of p-Ser1177 eNOS/total eNOS. Left ventricle (LV) from SNAC-treated mice revealed a 4-fold increase in β₂-AR expression associated with coupling change to Gi; β₂-ARs-S-nitrosation (β₂-AR-SNO) increased 61%, while apoptosis decreased by 70%. These results suggest that the cardio-protective effect of SNAC treatment is primarily through its anti-oxidant role and is associated with β₂-ARs overexpression and β₂-AR-SNO via an anti-apoptotic pathway., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is intimately associated with insulin resistance and hypertriglyceridemia, whereas many of the mechanisms underlying this association are still poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) and markers of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in the liver of rats subjected to neonatal monosodium L-glutamate (MSG)-induced obesity. At age 120 days old, the MSG-obese animals exhibited hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, insulin resistance, and liver steatosis, while the control (CTR) group did not. Analysis using fast protein liquid chromatography of the serum lipoproteins revealed that the triacylglycerol content of the very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) particles was twice as high in the MSG animals compared with the CTR animals. The expression of ER stress markers, GRP76 and GRP94, was increased in the MSG rats, promoting a higher expression of X-box binding protein 1 (XBP-1), protein disulfide isomerase (PDI), and MTP. As the XBP-1/PDI/MTP axis has been suggested to represent a significant lipogenic mechanism in the liver response to ER stress, our data indicate that hypertriglyceridemia and liver steatosis occurring in the MSG rats are associated with increased MTP expression., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Background: Fast post-implantation stent endothelialization is desirable for theoretically reducing the possibility of stent thrombosis., Objective: To evaluate the extent of sirolimus-eluting stent strut endothelialization (delivered from the luminal and abluminal aspects or abluminal aspect only) in the iliac arteries of rabbits., Methods: The iliac arteries of 10 rabbits were implanted with four sirolimus-eluting stents in the luminal and abluminal aspects, three sirolimus-eluting stents in the abluminal aspect, six polymer-coated stents, and four uncoated stents. After four weeks, the rabbits were euthanized and scanning electron microscopy was performed to quantify the area of exposed stent strut as well as the percentage of endothelialization., Results: The area (mean ± SD) (mm(2)) of exposed uncoated stent struts, polymer-coated stents, sirulimus-eluting stent in the abluminal and luminal aspects and sirolimus-eluting stent in the abluminal aspect was 0.12 ± 0.08, 0.09 ± 0.12, 0.60 ± 0.67 and 0.05 ± 0.04, respectively (p = 0.120). The percentage of endothelialization (mean ± SD) (%) of uncoated stents, polymer-coated stents, sirolimus-eluting stents in the luminal and abluminal aspects and sirolimus-eluting stents in the abluminal aspect was 99 ± 01, 99 ± 0. 97 ± 03 and 99 ± 0, respectively (p = 0.133)., Conclusion: After four weeks of implantation in the iliac arteries of rabbits, both the sirolimus-eluting stents in the luminal plus abluminal aspects and those in the abluminal aspect only showed stent strut endothelialization rates similar to those of the other types of non-drug eluting stents.

It has been speculated that the homeopathic treatment of sperm cells in order to improve semen quality could be promising. However, few data is available and its use in spermatozoa requires investigation. It is well established that mitochondrial membrane potential is an important viability parameter of spermatozoa and it is intimately related to reproductive efficiency. In this manner, new technologies in order to improve the activity of sperm cells and, finally, the fecundity of swine herds are of extremely importance. Due to the lack of knowledge of homeopathic treatment effect on spermatozoa, the aim of the present study was to verify the effect of three different homeopathic treatments on viability of boar sperm cells. Three homeopathic treatments composed by Pulsatila CH6, Pulsatila and Avena CH6, Avena CH6 and one control treatment (sucrose) were added to diluted boar semen, which were cooled for 24 or 48 h. Interestingly, no positive effect of homeopathic treatments was observed over semen viability. However, it was demonstrated that the 24 h of cooling storage provided more viable sperm cells when compared to the 48-h period. This effect of storage period on sperm viability was assessed by intact plasmatic membrane, intact acrosome and mitochondrial membrane potential evaluation.

Objective: Low molecular weight protein tyrosine phosphatases (LMW-PTPs) are a family of enzymes strongly involved in the regulation of cell growth and differentiation. Since there is no information concerning the relationship between osteoblastic differentiation and LMW-PTP expression/activity, we investigated its involvement during human osteoblast-like cells (hFOB 1.19) differentiation. It is known that LMW-PTP is regulated by an elegant redox mechanism, so we also observed how the osteoblastic differentiation affected the reduced glutathione levels., Design: hFOB 1.19 cells were cultured in DMEM/F12 up to 35 days. The osteoblast phenotype acquisition was monitored by measuring alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralized nodule formation by Von Kossa staining. LMW-PTP activity and expression were measured using the p-nitrophenylphosphate as substrate and Western blotting respectively. Crystal violet assay determined the cell number in each experimental point. Glutathione level was determined by both HPLC and DNTB assays., Results: LMW-PTP modulation was coincident with the osteoblastic differentiation biomarkers, such as alkaline phosphatase activity and presence of nodules of mineralization in vitro. Likewise LMW-PTP, the reduced glutathione-dependent microenvironment was modulated during osteoblastic differentiation. During this process, LMW-PTP expression/activity, as well as alkaline phosphatase and glutathione increased progressively up to the 21st day (p < 0.001) of culturing, decreasing thereafter., Conclusions: Our results clearly suggest that LMW-PTP expression/activity was rigorously modulated during osteoblastic differentiation, possibly in response to the redox status of the cells, since it seems to depend on suitable levels of reduced glutathione. In this way, we pointed out LMW-PTP as an important signaling molecule in osteoblast biology and bone formation.

Tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) is a well-known marker of osteoclasts and bone resorption. Here we have investigated whether osteoblast-like cells (hFOB 1.19) present TRAP activity and how would be its pattern of expression during osteoblastic differentiation. We also observed how the osteoblastic differentiation affected the reduced glutathione levels. TRAP activity was measured using the p-nitrophenylphosphate substrate. The osteogenic potential of hFOB 1.19 cells was studied by measuring alkaline phosphatase activity and mineralized nodule formation. Oxidative stress was determined by HPLC and DNTB assays. TRAP activity and the reduced glutathione-dependent microenvironment were modulated during osteoblastic differentiation. During this phase, TRAP activity, as well as alkaline phosphatase and glutathione increased progressively up to the 21st day, decreasing thereafter. We demonstrate that TRAP activity is modulated during osteoblastic differentiation, possibly in response to the redox state of the cell, since it seemed to depend on suitable levels of reduced glutathione.

It was performed the comparison of the intensity and duration of agglutinating and neutralizing antibodies to serovar Hardjo in swines vaccinated with two commercial anti-leptospira bacterins. Sows no reactive to 24 Leptospira sp serovars in the microscopic agglutination test (MAT) were divided in three groups: Group A (n=08): received two vaccine A doses with 30 days interval, Group B (n=08) two vaccine B doses with 30 days interval and Group C (n=08): control no vaccinated against leptospirosis.Blood samples were collected each 30 days during six months following the first vaccination. The sera were tested by MAT and growth inhibition test (GIT) to serovar Hardjo in order to evaluate respectively agglutinating and neutralizing antibodies. It was found that neutralizing antibodies persisted for a longer time than the agglutinating ones and that the absence of agglutinating antibodies does not means in the absence of the neutralizing. The peaks of agglutinating antibodies was obtained at least 30 days earlier than that produced by neutralizing. The duration of both kinds of antibodies measured differed between the two bacterines tested. The period for inducing neutralizing antibodies against serovar Hardjo indicated that gilts must be immunized with two doses of whole culture anti-leptospira bacterines applied 30 days each other at least 90 days before the first mating. For the maintenance of hight levels of neutralizing antibodies the revaccinations must be performed every six months after the first vaccination.

Introduction: Mechanisms underlying inotropic failure in septic shock are incompletely understood. We previously identified the presence of exosomes in the plasma of septic shock patients. These exosomes are released mainly by platelets, produce superoxide, and induce apoptosis in vascular cells by a redox-dependent pathway. We hypothesized that circulating platelet-derived exosomes could contribute to inotropic dysfunction of sepsis., Methods: We collected blood samples from 55 patients with septic shock and 12 healthy volunteers for exosome separation. Exosomes from septic patients and healthy individuals were investigated concerning their myocardial depressant effect in isolated heart and papillary muscle preparations., Results: Exosomes from the plasma of septic patients significantly decreased positive and negative derivatives of left ventricular pressure in isolated rabbit hearts or developed tension and its first positive derivative in papillary muscles. Exosomes from healthy individuals decreased these variables non-significantly. In hearts from rabbits previously exposed to endotoxin, septic exosomes decreased positive and negative derivatives of ventricular pressure. This negative inotropic effect was fully reversible upon withdrawal of exosomes. Nitric oxide (NO) production from exosomes derived from septic shock patients was demonstrated by fluorescence. Also, there was an increase in myocardial nitrate content after exposure to septic exosomes., Conclusion: Circulating platelet-derived exosomes from septic patients induced myocardial dysfunction in isolated heart and papillary muscle preparations, a phenomenon enhanced by previous in vivo exposure to lipopolysaccharide. The generation of NO by septic exosomes and the increased myocardial nitrate content after incubation with exosomes from septic patients suggest an NO-dependent mechanism that may contribute to myocardial dysfunction of sepsis.

Background/aims: To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) prevention by S-nitroso-N-acetylcysteine (SNAC), an NO donor that inhibits lipid peroxidation, we examined hepatic differentially expressed genes between ob/ob mice receiving or not SNAC treatment concomitantly with a methionine-choline deficient (MCD) diet., Methods: Ob/ob mice were assigned to receive oral SNAC fed solution (MCD+SNAC group) or vehicle (MCD group) by gavage. After four weeks, histopathological analysis and microarray hybridizations were conducted in liver tissues from groups. GeneSifter system was used to identify differentially expressed genes and pathways according to Gene Ontology., Results: NASH was absent in the MCD+SNAC group and no significant changes in food intake or body weight were observed in comparison to MCD group. After SNAC treatment, several genes belonging to oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid biosynthesis, fatty acid metabolism and glutathione metabolism pathways were down-regulated in comparison to the MCD group., Conclusions: SNAC treatment promotes down regulation of several genes from fatty acid (FA) metabolism related pathways, possibly through abrogation of the cytotoxic effects of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxides with consequent prevention of mitochondrial overload. Further studies are required to investigate the clinical implications of these findings, in attempt to develop novel therapeutic strategies for NAFLD treatment.

The anti-inflammatory activity of Lantana trifolia (Verbenaceae) was determined by carrageenan, serotonin and histamine-induced rat paw edema and the analgesic activity of this plant was studied by acetic acid-induced writhings and tail flick tests in mice. Lantana trifolia extracts (at 30 mg/kg) inhibited carrageenan and histamine-induced rat paw edema. Although the extracts did not produce any effect on acetic acid-induced writhings, they all develop a significant increase on tail flick antinociceptive index (doses varying between 1 and 30 mg/kg), indicating a spinal antinociceptive effect. These results provide support for the use of Lantana trifolia in relieving inflammatory pain.
