O aumento significativo, nas últimas décadas, da produção de obras literárias fortemente marcadas pela inclusão de fotografias, pela apropriação e colagem de documentos, e por manipulações gráficas e tipográficas, dentre outras operações realizadas nos níveis textual, paratextual e perigráfico, tem exigido um reexame do modo como nos aproximamos analiticamente das mesmas. Se pensar na relação literatura e imagem significava, predominantemente, refletir sobre a produção de imagens poéticas por meio de tropos linguísticos, os processos crescentes de fixação de imagens e outras formas de visualidade na página impressa exigem hoje do leitor a consideração da literatura como um objeto complexo, marcado pelo trânsito de linguagens e por modos técnicos de articulação do sentido. É dentro dessa perspectiva que este artigo buscará mapear as condições de emergência desse fenômeno no âmbito da literatura contemporânea brasileira e propor algumas formas de articulação analítica entre literatura, imagem e visualidade hoje

Ants are often the most ubiquitous and ecologically influential components of terrestrial systems, exhibiting an exceptionally high level of endemic diversity. Simultaneously, exotic ants can be amongst the most environmentally and economically devastating biological invaders. Distinguishing between exotic and related natives is essential for early detection and to reduce the chance of establishment, but at the species-level there remains a great deal of uncertainty among several of the most diverse, widespread and ecologically dominant genera. This taxonomic impediment negatively impacts the use of molecular techniques relying on reference databases, due to the poor state of ant DNA sequences in publicly available repositories, with many species not represented at all and others incorrectly identified. As a result, biosecurity screening for targeted exotic ants and assigning ant species-level identifications for biodiversity remain two separate areas of focus in Australia. Here we propose a workflow for the identification of ants that enables simultaneous processing of large numbers of “bulk” ant samples each containing many individuals, increasing resolution for taxonomic assignment, and generating a curated database linked to voucher specimens. We use a non-destructive DNA extraction method and compare two high throughput sequencing (HTS) metabarcoding platforms – MiSeq (Illumina) and MinION (Oxford Nanopore Technologies) – processing up to 180 bulk mixed ant samples per run. This approach allowed for the acquisition of curated DNA sequences from voucher specimens morphologically examined by expert taxonomists. This work highlights the advantages and current limitations of DNA-based identifications, the needs for standardisation, as well as the importance of a taxonomy-based curation of DNA database for both biodiversity and biosecurity.

College students often experience sleep–wake alterations. Different factors can contribute to insomnia symptoms in this population. The present study aims at investigating pre-sleep behaviours and strategies used to aid sleep onset in young college students and their association with insomnia symptoms. A total of 548 Italian college students (mean age = 23.48 years, range = 19–30 years, 80.5% female) completed a web-based survey on pre-sleep behaviours and sleep-onset facilitators, insomnia symptoms and sleep hygiene, anxiety and depression, and coping strategies. The use of electronic devices at bedtime and as a sleep-onset facilitator was predominant. Students using specific behaviours as sleep-onset facilitators were characterised by more psychological difficulties and poorer sleep. In multivariable linear regression analysis, the frequency of using medications and melatonin, regardless of motivations, was associated with higher insomnia symptoms. The use of specific sleep-onset facilitators positively correlated with the severity of insomnia symptoms. Many students engage in behaviours that are considered sleep-interfering and that are often employed in an attempt to facilitate sleep onset without benefits. Overall, the motivational factors behind pre-sleep behaviours need to be addressed in preventive programs targeting young college students.

Jet impingement cooling enhances photovoltaic (PV) system efficiency by using high-speed fluid jets to reduce panel temperatures, improving performance and longevity. The effectiveness depends on factors like fluid flow rate, nozzle placement, and distance from the panel. While it boosts energy output, it may increase energy use for fluid circulation and add complexity to the system. This research explores a groundbreaking approach to enhancing the efficiency of bifacial photovoltaic thermal (BPVT) systems by integrating jet impingement technology. A novel design featuring a jet plate reflector is introduced, offering the dual benefit of cooling the PV panels while simultaneously reflecting light to optimize energy capture. The study comprehensively analyses the system’s performance, including energy output and a detailed techno-economic and environmental-economic evaluation. The modelling in this study was validated and reasonably consistent with experimental results. The system's output air temperature and thermal efficiency are 302.07–318.75 K and 33.83–62.28 %, respectively. The temperature and electrical efficiency range for PV systems are 304.39–339.54 K and 9.39–11.22 %. Reduced mass flow rate and increased solar irradiation are the most economically advantageous operating parameters for the proposed system, resulting in lower annual pumping costs and more significant annual energy gains for the system. CBR variations range from 0.1363 to 9.3445, with an average of 2. Additionally, by using BPVT with jet impingement to generate electricity rather than fossil fuels, it is possible to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 1.61 tons and save RM93.51 annually. In general, the proposed method should be used to minimize environmental pollution.

Nel mettere a disposizione oggetti, servizi, app e piattaforme, la trasformazione digitale dà forma a nuovi ambienti di vita, dimensioni al contempo analogiche e digitali in cui i soggetti (utenti e cittadini) agiscono, entrano in relazione e da cui sono interpellati, in un continuo rapporto di circolarità fra azioni e retroazioni. Si tratta di un contesto caratterizzato da una nuova forma di agire sociale e giuridico, rispetto al quale la piena autonomia dei soggetti agenti è di fatto ostacolata da limiti cognitivi, incompetenze e in molti casi anche da design ingannevoli. Obiettivo di questo contributo è esplorare la ricerca già in corso per individuare le variabili che impediscono la partecipazione pienamente consapevole al nuovo habitat digitale, evidenziando al contempo i limiti dell’attuale regolamentazione giuridica, idealmente orientata all’adozione di un modello di autonomia effettiva, che stenta però a trovare una concreta realizzazione. Il fine è cominciare a delineare alcune ipotesi di lavoro per orientare la discussione anche su possibili profili di intervento di carattere applicativo.

RESUMO A obra de Giorgio Agamben é marcada por constantes referências aos trabalhos de Michel Foucault, de modo que esse figura como um importante marco teórico para aquele. Entretanto, um esforço de aproximação dos dois autores se mostra deveras problemático à medida que se percebe que o filósofo italiano opera certas categorias metodológicas e conceituais fundamentais ao pensamento foucaultiano de maneira radicalmente distinta do filósofo francês. Tal incompatibilidade se apresenta com maior clareza quando nos propomos a explorar o tema do ‘destituinte’ na obra agambeniana, a partir do qual ontologia, política e ética se entrecruzam desvelando as diferenças entre os dois filósofos. Assim, para expor os limites dessa aproximação, primeiramente serão exploradas as distinções metodológicas entre os dois autores na abordagem do problema do ‘poder’, bem como a maneira como o conceito se formula na obra de cada um deles. Na sequência, serão apresentadas as linhas gerais da ‘ontologia modal’ e da ‘ética da inoperosidade’ agambenianas com o fim de explicitar ao final, à guisa de conclusão, a divergência entre as saídas éticas propostas por Foucault e Agamben em seus trabalhos tardios.

Abstract Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, also known as the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), can vector the bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), agent of Huanglongbing (HLB): an incurable disease affecting citrus trees worldwide. In citrus growing regions where ACP and HLB are absent, such as Australia, the risk of an incursion and consequent economic damage to citrus industries make this psyllid one of the top-priority pests. Due to ACP’s small dimensions and the generally poorly studied native psylloid fauna worldwide, morphological identification of this insect to distinguish it from harmless species is challenging, especially in the field, and with immature, partial or damaged specimens. To allow rapid and efficient detection of ACP in the field, we designed and optimised a new Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for the detection of D. citri based on the mitochondrial 16S locus. The optimised ACP 16S LAMP assay produced amplification from D. citri samples within 13.3 ± 3.6 min, with an anneal derivative of ~ 78.5 °C. A synthetic gBlock gene fragment was also developed to be used as positive control for the new LAMP assay with a different anneal derivative of ~ 83 °C. An existing commercially available LAMP assay for detection of the bacterium CLas was also tested in this study on ACP DNA. The ACP 16S LAMP assay we developed and tested here provides a valuable new in-field compatible tool that can allow early detections of ACP, enabling a quick biosecurity response, and could potentially be adopted by a wide range of users, from farmers to agronomists and from researchers to industry.

Objectives: Parkinson’s disease is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. Tremor is one of the motor symptoms that can affect manual skills and have an impact on daily activities. The aim of the current study is to investigate the effect of upper limb training provided by a specific vibratory device (Armshake®, Move It GmbH - Bochum, Germany) on tremor and motor functionality in patients with Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore, the training effect on global cognitive functioning is assessed. Design: An uncontrolled before-after clinical trial. Patients: Individuals with diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, motor upper limbs deficits, and absence of dementia. Methods: Participants underwent a 3-week programme (3 times a week) and was evaluated before, after, and at 1 month follow-up by motor (Fahn Tolosa Marin Tremor Rating Scale, Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale – part III, Purdue Pegboard Test, Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire) and cognitive (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) scales. Results: Twenty subjects are included. After treatment a statistically significant improvement in tremor, manual dexterity and activities of daily living was found. The data indicated no effects on global cognitive functioning. Conclusion: These findings suggest positive effects of vibratory stimulation training on upper limb motor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease.

Heart failure (HF) is a growing issue in developed countries; it is often the result of underlying processes such as ischemia, hypertension, infiltrative diseases or even genetic abnormalities. The great majority of the affected patients present a reduced ejection fraction (≤40%), thereby falling under the name of “heart failure with reduced ejection fraction” (HFrEF). This condition represents a major threat for patients: it significantly affects life quality and carries an enormous burden on the whole healthcare system due to its high management costs. In the last decade, new medical treatments and devices have been developed in order to reduce HF hospitalizations and improve prognosis while reducing the overall mortality rate. Pharmacological therapy has significantly changed our perspective of this disease thanks to its ability of restoring ventricular function and reducing symptom severity, even in some dramatic contexts with an extensively diseased myocardium. Notably, medical therapy can sometimes be ineffective, and a tailored integration with device technologies is of pivotal importance. Not by chance, in recent years, cardiac implantable devices witnessed a significant improvement, thereby providing an irreplaceable resource for the management of HF. Some devices have the ability of assessing (CardioMEMS) or treating (ultrafiltration) fluid retention, while others recognize and treat life-threatening arrhythmias, even for a limited time frame (wearable cardioverter defibrillator). The present review article gives a comprehensive overview of the most recent and important findings that need to be considered in patients affected by HFrEF. Both novel medical treatments and devices are presented and discussed.

O estudo contempla a corporação Airbnb – plataforma de locação de imóveis para curtas temporadas –, tanto em sua atuação na cidade colonial mineira de Ouro Preto, quanto em escala mundial. Tal abordagem faz parte de uma reflexão acerca de processos mais amplificados, os quais dizem respeito à lógica produtiva e reprodutiva no tempo- histórico da acumulação flexível (Harvey, 1992), levada a cabo, cada vez mais, por meios tecnocientíficos e informacionais. Dois foram os objetivos traçados: desenvolver um instrumental/software para o levantamento de dados empíricos (sendo este utilizado de forma experimental na referida localidade); e teorizar os processos de produção de mais- valor no contexto do “capitalismo de plataforma” (Srnicek, 2016), contemplando os novos formatos da subsunção do trabalho ao capital. As técnicas para a obtenção de dados e informações adotadas foram as pesquisas documental e bibliográfica, além do software para o levantamento do quantitativo real de imóveis cadastrados em Ouro Preto. A partir da averiguação foi possível expor algumas das mediações da plataforma no âmbito da produção e do consumo, bem como tecer considerações acerca de desdobramentos socioespaciais contraditórios por ela alavancados.

Surveillance and long-term monitoring of insect pest populations are of paramount importance to limit dispersal and inform pest management. Molecular methods have been employed in diagnostics, surveillance and monitoring for the past few decades, often paired with more traditional techniques relying on morphological examinations. Within this context, the ‘iMapPESTS: Sentinel Surveillance for Agriculture’ project was conceptualised to enhance on-farm pest management decision-making via development and deployment of smart traps, able to collect insects, as well as recording associated environmental data. Here, we compared an iMapPESTS ‘Sentinel’ smart trap to an alternative suction trap over a 10-week period. We used a non-destructive insect metabarcoding approach complemented by insect morphological diagnostics to assess and compare aphid species presence and diversity across trap samples and time. Furthermore, we paired this with environmental data recorded throughout the sampling period. This methodology recorded a total of 497 different taxa from 70 traps over a 10-week period in the grain-growing region in western Victoria. This included not only the 14 aphid target species, but an additional 12 aphid species, including a new record for Victoria. Ultimately, with more than 450 bycatch species detected, this highlighted the value of insect metabarcoding, not only for pest surveillance, but also at a broader ecosystem level, with potential applications in integrated pest management and biocontrol.

Medical education is highly demanding and evidence shows that medical students are three times more susceptible to deteriorating physical and mental health than the average college student. While trait anxiety may further increase such risk, little is known about the role of trait mindfulness in mitigating these effects. Here we examine the protective role of specific mindfulness facets as mediators in pathways from trait anxiety to perceived stress, psychosomatic burden and sleep-wake quality in medical students, across repeated measurements throughout the first trimester of the school year. Preclinical medical students enrolled in the second year of the Medical School of University of Bologna completed self-report questionnaires examining personality traits as well as physical and psychological wellbeing. Data were collected at the beginning (Time 1: N = 349) and the end of the first trimester (Time 2: N = 305). As students approached the end of the trimester and upcoming exams, reported levels of perceived stress, psychosomatic problems and difficulties in wakefulness increased significantly compared to the beginning of the trimester. Mediation results showed that trait anxiety predicted such outcomes whereas the protective role of mindfulness facets in mitigating these effects was significant only at Time 2. Specific facets of Nonjudging of inner experience and Acting with awareness proved to be the most effective mediators. Findings highlight that the beneficial role of mindfulness facets in mitigating negative consequences of trait anxiety on medical student wellbeing is revealed in high-pressure periods and when self-regulation is needed the most. Cultivating awareness and nonjudgmental acceptance of one's inner experiences is a crucial self-regulation resource that can help medical students sustain their wellbeing as they learn and throughout their high-pressure education and professional careers.

Background The Australian citrus industry remains one of the few in the world to be unaffected by the African and the Asian citrus psyllids, Trioza erytreae Del Guercio and Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, respectively, and the diseases their vectored bacteria can cause. Surveillance, early detection, and strict quarantine measures are therefore fundamental to safeguard Australian citrus. However, long-term targeted surveillance for exotic citrus pests can be a time-consuming and expensive activity, often relying on manually screening large numbers of trap samples and morphological identification of specimens, which requires a high level of taxonomic knowledge. Methods Here we evaluated the use of non-destructive insect metabarcoding for exotic pest surveillance in citrus orchards. We conducted an 11-week field trial, between the months of December and February, at a horticultural research farm (SuniTAFE Smart Farm) in the Northwest of Victoria, Australia, and processed more than 250 samples collected from three types of invertebrate traps across four sites. Results The whole-community metabarcoding data enabled comparisons between different trapping methods, demonstrated the spatial variation of insect diversity across the same orchard, and highlighted how comprehensive assessment of insect biodiversity requires use of multiple complimentary trapping methods. In addition to revealing the diversity of native psyllid species in citrus orchards, the non-targeted metabarcoding approach identified a diversity of other pest and beneficial insects and arachnids within the trap bycatch, and recorded the presence of the triozid Casuarinicola cf warrigalensis for the first time in Victoria. Ultimately, this work highlights how a non-targeted surveillance approach for insect monitoring coupled with non-destructive DNA metabarcoding can provide accurate and high-throughput species identification for biosecurity and biodiversity monitoring.

Os artigos reunidos neste volume oferecem ao leitor uma perspectivação das formas como o horizonte tecnocultural contemporâneo vinca profundamente as práticas de criação literária. Nesse sentido, um problema recorrente consiste na busca de modos de apreensão conceitual de fenômenos que esgarçam as linhas imaginárias que até então circunscreviam as formas literárias.

A pesquisa contempla os atributos patrimoniais de Itatiaia, Ouro Branco, Minas Gerais. Considerando que cada sítio possui particularidades que o caracterizam no tempo e no espaço, parte-se do pressuposto de que é crucial levantar e compreender os bens patrimoniais de forma contextualizada para fomentar a sua valorização. A partir de averiguações in loco, de análise documental e bibliográfica e de entrevistas, o objetivo é evidenciar os principais referenciais desse vilarejo estabelecido em fins do século XVII para fornecer subsídios à população local nas necessárias (e urgentes) reivindicações ao Estado para fins de levantamento e salvaguarda. A perspectiva, nesta etapa inicial, é abordar as dimensões cultural, histórica e arquitetônica do valor patrimonial de forma objetiva e subjetiva. Os resultados preliminares apontam que na memória de habitantes locais há um expressivo valor patrimonial, envolvendo tanto os bens que não resistiram à passagem do tempo, quanto os que permanecem.

The time course of motor activity sleep inertia (maSI) dissipation was recently investigated through actigraphy in an everyday life condition from middle childhood to late adulthood. Motor activity sleep inertia was dissipated in 70 min, and the sleep inertia phenomenon was more evident in younger participants than in older participants. The aim of the current secondary analysis of previously published data was to examine, within the same sample, the time course of motor activity wake inertia (maWI) dissipation, i.e., the motor pattern in the transition phase from wakefulness to sleep, according to age. To this end, an overall sample of 374 participants (215 females), ranging in age between 9 and 70 years old, was examined. Each participant was asked to wear an actigraph around their non-dominant wrist for one week. The variation in the motor activity pattern of the wake–sleep transition according to age was examined through functional linear modeling (FLM). FLM showed that motor activity wake inertia dissipated around 20 min after bedtime. Moreover, a lower age was significantly associated with greater motor activity within the last two hours of wakefulness and the first twenty minutes after bedtime. Overall, this pattern of results seems to suggest that maWI dissipation is comparable to that of maSI.

Post-border surveillance for forestry’s high priority pests and pathogens is conducted routinely through established programs focused on the main points-of-entry and across the major plantation growing regions. Currently, most diagnostic protocols used to identify fungal phytopathogens sampled during these surveys rely on traditional methods, such as morphological examination and DNA barcoding techniques. This stepwise process from isolation to species identification is often regarded as slow, expensive, and limited due to the need for disease manifestation and/or comprehensive expertise for rapid and accurate detection. In this study, we applied a recently validated high-throughput, dual-marker amplicon sequencing approach on insect surveillance traps from across Australia to assess its performance for the targeted surveillance of the Ophiostomatales, an order of fungi comprising notable phytopathogens which are vectored by bark beetles. By using a recently validated assay we were able to confidently characterize a range of Ophiostomatalean taxa known to be present in Australia, while reporting eight first detections from environmental DNA. Our study demonstrates the value of targeted multi-barcode amplicon sequencing for high-throughput screening of fungi caught in post-border surveillance traps, in addition to emphasizing research priorities that require further investigation before such methods can be implemented routinely for biosecurity.

Spittlebugs and froghoppers (Hemiptera: Cercopoidea) are insects feeding on xylem, which potentially can cause significant economic damage worldwide by transmitting plant pathogenic bacteria such as Xylella fastidiosa. Australia and New Zealand are currently free from X. fastidiosa, but they are home to at least 45 native spittlebug species. Among these, the Australian natives Bathyllus albicinctus (Erichson, 1842) and Philagra parva (Donovan, 1805) are particularly widespread and can be found across southern and eastern Australia, with B. albicinctus also in New Zealand. The potential that both species might be capable of vectoring Xylella fastidiosa poses a substantial biosecurity risk if the bacterium were to invade these regions. In this study, we examined 87 spittlebug nymphs collected across 12 different host plant species, in five locations in Victoria, Australia. Our objective was to explore the factors influencing bacterial communities within and between these widespread spittlebug species, considering geographic location, insect phylogenetics, and host plant associations. We employed COI barcoding to assess insect genetic variation and 16S high throughput sequencing (HTS) metabarcoding to analyse bacterial microbiome diversity across various host plants. Our findings revealed minimal genetic divergence among spittlebug individuals in the same species, highlighting conspecificity despite conspicuous morphological divergences. On the other hand, we recorded significant variation in bacterial communities harboured by Bathyllus albicinctus nymphs feeding on different plants, even when these were collected within close proximity to each other. Therefore, host plant association appeared to shape the bacterial communities of spittlebugs more than insect genetic divergence or geographical location. These diverse bacterial communities could potentially facilitate transmission of plant pathogenic bacteria, underscoring the risk of widespread transmission among numerous plant hosts through insect-plant interactions. Research on joint action has demonstrated that individuals are sensitive to a coactor’s attentional relation to jointly attend stimuli. It has also been suggested that some features are necessary to resolve the discrimination problem (i.e., self-own and other-own actions). In the present study, we aimed to test whether the gender composition of interacting pairs modulated the joint action effect. Same- (female-female or male-male) and mixed- (female-male) gender pairs performed a joint version of flanker tasks in Experiment 1 (90 participants, 50% males), while in Experiment 2 (154 participants, 50% males) Navon tasks were performed. In Experiment 1, a higher joint flanker effect in same-gender pairs than in mixed-gender pairs, and this joint effect was similar to the classical flanker effect reported by males and females in a classical procedure of the task (70 participants, 50% males). In Experiment 2, the same-gender pairs reported a joint Navon effect, which was reversed in mixed-gender pairs. In conclusion, our findings support how the gender composition of interacting pairs plays a role in joint attentional tasks.

The bacterial microbiome of psyllids has been studied for decades, with a strong focus on the primary and secondary endosymbionts capable of providing essential amino acids for the insects' diet and therefore playing a key role in the insects' ability to radiate on novel plant hosts. Here, we combine metabarcoding analysis of the bacterial communities hosted by psyllids with a multi-gene phylogenetic analysis of the insect hosts to determine what factors influence the bacterial diversity of the psyllids' microbiomes, especially in the context of the dispersal and evolutionary radiation of these insects in Aotearoa New Zealand. Using multi-gene phylogenetics with COI, 18S and EF-1α sequences from 102 psyllid species, we confirmed for the first time monophyly for all the six genera of native/endemic Aotearoa New Zealand psyllids, with indications that they derive from at least six dispersal events to the country. This also revealed that, after its ancestral arrival, the genus Powellia has radiated onto a larger and more diverse range of plants than either Psylla or Ctenarytaina, which is uncommon amongst monophyletic psyllids globally. DNA metabarcoding of the bacterial 16S gene here represents the largest dataset analysed to date from psyllids, including 246 individuals from 73 species. This provides novel evidence that bacterial diversity across psyllid species is strongly associated with psyllid phylogenetic structure, and to a lesser degree to their host plant association and geographic distribution. Furthermore, while the strongest co-phylogenetic signals were derived from the primary and secondary symbionts, a signal of phylosymbiosis was still retained among the remaining taxa of the bacterial microbiome, suggesting potential vertical transmission of bacterial lineages previously unknown to have symbiotic roles.

High-throughput sequencing (HTS) technologies have the potential to become one of the most significant advances in molecular diagnostics. Their use by researchers to detect and characterize plant pathogens and pests has been growing steadily for more than a decade and they are now envisioned as a routine diagnostic test to be deployed by plant pest diagnostics laboratories. Nevertheless, HTS technologies and downstream bioinformatics analysis of the generated datasets represent a complex process including many steps whose reliability must be ensured. The aim of the present guidelines is to provide recommendations for researchers and diagnosticians aiming to reliably use HTS technologies to detect plant pathogens and pests. These guidelines are generic and do not depend on the sequencing technology or platform. They cover all the adoption processes of HTS technologies from test selection to test validation as well as their routine implementation. A special emphasis is given to key elements to be considered: undertaking a risk analysis, designing sample panels for validation, using proper controls, evaluating performance criteria, confirming and interpreting results. These guidelines cover any HTS test used for the detection and identification of any plant pest (viroid, virus, bacteria, phytoplasma, fungi and fungus-like protists, nematodes, arthropods, plants) from any type of matrix. Overall, their adoption by diagnosticians and researchers should greatly improve the reliability of pathogens and pest diagnostics and foster the use of HTS technologies in plant health.

Constipation is a common and typically multifactorial childhood complaint, and the clinical management of childhood functional constipation (FC) is challenging. A randomized, single-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center clinical trial was conducted in 92 children (47 from Beijing, China and 45 from Shanghai, China) aged 4–12 with FC according to Rome III criteria. Children were assigned to receive a probiotic chewable tablet (5 × 109 CFU/day, n = 47), consisting of Lactobacillus acidophilus DDS-1® and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis UABla-12™ or placebo (n = 45), twice daily for 4 weeks, followed by a week follow-up period. Results suggested that the probiotic group showed a faster and more pronounced normalization of stool frequency over the intervention period (3.15 vs. 1.83) when compared to placebo group (2.51 vs. 1.87). Meanwhile, the percentage of subjects with hard defecation decreased from 43 to 14% in the probiotic group, while the percentage of subjects with normal defecation increased from 56 to 80% in the probiotic group, further confirming the normalization of stools habits. This randomized controlled trial demonstrated the potential of a probiotic chewable tablet containing L. acidophilus DDS-1® and B. Lactis UABla-12™ as a daily probiotic dosage form for children with FC.
