Dugald Stewart claims that conjectural history is 'the peculiar glory of the latter half of the eighteenth century'. Yet it is hard to see why, in his view, conjectural histories are not merely confabulated just-so stories. The author explores the concept of propositional thought in the ideas of early modern philosopher John Locke. A comparison is made to the theories on traditional logic in the book "Port-Royal Logic" by philosophers Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole. Emphasis is given to the role of judgment in the formation of propositional content. Other topics include the truth and falsehood of ideas, epistemological commitments, and acts of affirmation.
