27. Stability and electron affinities of negatively charged aluminium clusters: A computational study

Abstract

A computational study on the stability of neutral, singly and doubly negatively charged aluminium clusters Aln z, with n = {13, 18, 23, 39, 55}, and z = {0, -1, -2} is presented.Estimates of electron affinities (EA) were computed with(i) all-electron quantum-mechanical calculations with fullgeometry optimization on Aln z, with n = {13, 18, 23, 39,55}, and z = {0, -1, -2}, using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof(PBE) gradient-corrected functional within Density FunctionalTheory (DFT) and (ii) Charged Conducting-Sphere Model with and without Coulomb barrier and tunnelling corrections. If a positive value for the second electron affinity of the cluster is considered to be the sole criterion for the production and experimental observation of dianionic aluminium clusters, then the predicted minimum cluster size (i.e. the number of atoms) is n ∼ 23 and n ∼ 32 from the all-electron computations and the charged conducting-sphere model, respectively.

Abstract

Abstract: Size-selected monoanionic tin clusters Snn−, n = 7 − 75, are stored simultaneously with electrons in a Penning trap to produce poly-anionic clusters by electron attachment. In addition to doubly and triply charged clusters with the size of the precursors, fragments such as Sn−n−7, Sn−n−10 or Snn−15 are observed in the lower size range (n ≲ 50). The latter come along with the clusters Sn−10 and Sn−15, probably due to fission of doubly charged clusters as in the case of the group-14 neighbor-element lead [König et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 163001 (2018)]. Furthermore, prominent doubly charged products Sn2−n−15 seem to be produced by break-off of neutral decamers, a feature not yet observed for any other dianionic cluster. In addition, while almost no monomer evaporation is observed for singly charged clusters, this process does occur for doubly charged ones. Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. Atomic clusters and ion-cyclotron-resonance mass spectrometry: a fruitful combination.

Abstract

Clusters consisting of a few atoms build the bridge between individual atoms and the condensed phase of matter and they are, thus, of high general interest. Over the last two decades, considerable progress has been made in the study of their properties, and ion storage techniques, in particular the use of ion cyclotron resonance (Penning) traps, are important tools for advanced investigations. Vice versa, cluster ions can serve as probes for the evaluation of ion-trap properties. Furthermore, they are ideally suited for the calibration of mass spectrometers and for consistency checks in high-accuracy mass determinations. Examples from the research areas mentioned, i.e. the investigation of cluster properties and the application of cluster ions for Penning-trap studies and mass calibration, are reported.
