We evaluated highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) use and risk behaviors among 177 inmates who were HIV infected and were re leased and reincarcerated in San Francisco, Calif, jails over a 12-month period. During the month preceding reincarceration, HIV transmission risk behaviors were common among respondents, and 59% of those with a history of antiretroviral use were not taking HAART. HAART discontinuation was independently associated with homelessness, marijuana use, injection drug use, and not receiving community medical care. To determine the independent predictors of attempted suicide among transgender persons we interviewed 392 male-to-female (MTF) and 123 female-to-male (FTM) individuals. The HIV Education and Prevention (E&P) program promotes primary prevention for HIV high-risk populations, educates the public, and trains healthcare workers. A survey was conducted concerning the clients served by the program, the interventions performed, and the planning done. Specific needs for improving the process of HIV E&P activities in California were identified through this study.

Although great advances have been made in the clinical understanding of trachoma, the disease remains endemic in many parts of the world. Economic, environmental, cultural and behavioral factors continue to play an important role in trachoma transmission and progression. The trachoma literature however, contains relatively few studies which rigorously assess the importance of social factors. A critical review of the trachoma literature implicates individual and community hygiene as important risk factors for disease. Specific risk behaviors remain to be identified and validated as independent predictors of infection in different settings. Collaboration between biomedical and social science professionals is needed to design and carry out further research.
