3. High-Performance Ultrasonic Levitation with FPGA-based Phased Arrays

Abstract

We present a flexible and self-contained platform for acoustic levitation research based on the Xilinx Zynq SoC using an array of ultrasonic emitters. The platform employs an inexpensive ZedBoard and provides fast movement of the levitated objects as well as object detection based on the produced echo. Several features available in the Zynq device are of benefit for this platform: hardware acceleration for the phase calculations, large number of parallel I/Os connected through the FPGA Mezzanine connector (FMC), integrated ADC capabilities to capture echo signals and ease of programmability due to a C-based design flow for both CPU and FPGA. A planar and spherical cap phased arrays are created and we investigate the capabilities and limitations of the different designs to improve the stability of the levitation process., Comment: Presented at HIP3ES, 2019

10. Using Low-frequency Sound to Create Non-contact Sensations On and In the Body

Abstract

This paper proposes a method for generating non-contact sensations using low-frequency sound waves without requiring user instrumentation. This method leverages the fundamental acoustic response of a confined space to produce predictable pressure spatial distributions at low frequencies, called modes. These modes can be used to produce sensations either throughout the body, in localized areas of the body, or within the body. We first validate the location and strength of the modes simulated by acoustic modeling. Next, a perceptual study is conducted to show how different frequencies produce qualitatively different sensations across and within the participants' bodies. The low-frequency sound offers a new way of delivering non-contact sensations throughout the body. The results indicate a high accuracy for predicting sensations at specific body locations.

17. Personalizing Sample Databases with Facebook Information to Increase Intrinsic Motivation

Abstract

Motivation is fundamental for students to achieve successful and complete learning. Motivation can be extrinsic, i.e., driven by external rewards, or intrinsic, i.e., driven by internal factors. Intrinsic motivation is the most effective and must be inspired by the task at hand. Here, a novel strategy is presented to increase intrinsic motivation toward activities requiring the use of sample data sets, by automatically extracting the student's social data from a social media network, to create a personalized sample data set. A tool was developed to access Facebook and create a database to be used in practical assignments on database queries. A user study (N = 74) measured intrinsic motivation before and after the assignment in three different groups of first-year university students. Each group had to create a set of queries of similar difficulty, with each group using a different database. Intrinsic motivation was found to be significantly higher for the group using their own social media data than for the groups using social media data from an unknown person or a business. The approach presented here can be applied to other subjects, such as data mining, image processing, or statistics.

Abstract

A set of demonstrators of contactless haptic principles is described in this work. The technologies are based on electrostatic piloerection, chemical compounds and ultrasound. Additionally, applications related to affective touch are presented, ranging from storytelling to biosignal transfer, accompanied with a simple application to edit dynamic tactile patterns in an easy way. The demonstrators are the result of the Touchless project, which is a H2020 european collaborative project that integrates 3 universities and 3 companies. These demostrators are contactless haptic experiences and thus facilitate the come-and-interact paradigm, where users can approach the demo booth and directly experience the applications without having to wear devices, making the experience fast and hygienic.

30. UltraPower: Powering Tangible and Wearable Devices with Focused Ultrasound

Abstract

Wireless power transfer creates new opportunities for interaction with tangible and wearable devices, by freeing designers from the constraints of an integrated power source. We explore the use of focused ultrasound as a means of transferring power to a distal device, transforming passive props into dynamic active objects. We analyse the ability to transfer power from an ultrasound array commonly used for mid-air haptic feedback and investigate the practical challenges of ultrasonic power transfer (e.g., receiving and rectifying energy from sound waves). We also explore the ability to power electronic components and multimodal actuators such as lights, speakers and motors. Finally, we describe exemplar wearable and tangible device prototypes that are activated by UltraPower, illustrating the potential applications of this novel technology.

Abstract

While pressing can enable a wide variety of interesting applications, most press sensing techniques operate only at close distances and rely on fragile electronics. We present EchoTube, a robust, modular, simple, and inexpensive system for sensing low-resolution press events at a distance. EchoTube works by emitting ultrasonic pulses inside a flexible tube which acts as a waveguide and detecting reflections caused by deformations in the tube. EchoTube is deployable in a wide variety of situations: the flexibility of the tubes allows them to be wrapped around and affixed to irregular objects. Because the electronic elements are located at one end of the tube, EchoTube is robust, able to withstand crushing, impacts, water, and other adverse conditions. In this paper, we detail the design, implementation, and theory behind EchoTube; characterize its performance under different configurations; and present a variety of exemplar applications that illustrate its potential.
