Search

We present the PSALTer software for efficiently computing the mass and energy of the particle spectrum for any (e.g. higher-rank) tensor field theory in the Wolfram Language. The user must provide a Lagrangian density which is expanded quadratically in the fields around a Minkowski vacuum, is linear in the coupling coefficients, and otherwise built from the partial derivative and Minkowski metric. PSALTer automatically computes the spin-projection operators, saturated propagator, bare masses, residues of massive and massless poles and overall unitarity conditions in terms of the coupling coefficients. The constraints on the source currents and total number of gauge symmetries are produced as a by-product. We provide examples from scalar, vector, tensor and gauge theories of gravity. Each example, including spectra of higher-spin modified gravity theories, may be obtained on a personal computer in a matter of minutes. The software is also parallelised for use on high-performance computing resources. The initial release allows for parity-preserving operators constructed from fields of up to rank three: this functionality will be extended in future versions. The rigorous conditions to obtain sensible predictions in non (proper) renormalizable Quantum Field Theories were derived a long time ago, most notably in the works of Steven Weinberg. In this paper we explicitly illustrate the challenges met in carrying this program within the Affine Gravity framework, in particular when attempting to pinpoint viable particle propagation. We explore the one-loop structure of some ghost and tachyon-free vector theories to illustrate the role of structural constraints in their interactions, even in the absence of gauge symmetries. Despite the presence of soft-breaking terms, we show how hopes of casting a vector model within the predictive frame of effective field methods hinges on adopting a gauge-like treatment of their interactions., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures

It is tempting to interpret the minuscule scale of neutrino masses as a symptom of its radiative origin. In light of the notable leap in precision expected at the Future Circular Collider, we explore areas of the parameter space that can simultaneously support the detectable Higgs-strahlung signal with parallel ones from forthcoming measurements in low-energy observables. We pinpoint the role that the extra fermions have in shaping a signal distinct from the pure Inert Doublet one. The details of the full one-loop computation and on-shell renormalization are presented. We study the dominant non-universal contributions to muon decay for the five scalar leptoquarks (LQs) allowed by the Standard Model gauge symmetries. By using a common computational framework, we isolate the new-Physics (NP) one-loop corrections over the observable $\Delta r$ and explore the connection with the $W$ boson mass. We highlight the role of non-universal terms considering, for the $SU(2)$ doublet and triplet LQs, a completely degenerate scenario, thus cancelling/moderating the effects of the oblique parameters S,T and U . We determine simple formulas that exhibit the leading non-universal behaviour generated by the introduction of extra Yukawa terms, and confront them against a present tension in $M_W$ and the projected FCC-ee accuracy., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures . v2: added references and one figure missed in compiling v1. We report the existence of a ghost- and tachyon-free sector in metric-affine theories of gravity, that is invariant under diffeomorphism and a particular abelian symmetry. In contrast with many studied cases in the literature, the constraints for unitarity and causality are granted by non-accidental symmetries and do not ask for further tuning, whose fate under renormalization would be unclear. Unsurprisingly, the minimal model is massless. We find that a mechanism to provide mass is accommodated by a simple Stueckelberg extension of metric-affine gravity involving the non-metricity tensor. A non-trivial result is that also such an extension describes a ghost- and tachyon-free dynamic stabilized by the same abelian symmetry. The resulting spectrum of the collective rank-3, rank-2, and rank-0 Lagrangian is investigated with the operators recently computed in the literature., Comment: 22 pages, no figures

We complete the set of spin-projector operators for fields up to rank-3 by providing all operators connecting sectors with same spin and parity. In this way we can broaden the search for unitary and non-tachyonic particle propagation in quadratic lagrangian with inter-field mixing. We use the properties of projector algebra to reanalyze known theories and shed light towards new healthy ones. Extensions to the Standard Model that use strictly off-shell degrees of freedom - the fakeons - allow for new measurable interactions at energy scales usually precluded by the constraints that target the on-shell propagation of new particles. Here we employ the interactions between a new fake scalar doublet and the muon to explain the recent Fermilab measurement of its anomalous magnetic moment. Remarkably, unlike in the case of usual particles, the experimental result can be matched for fakeon masses below the electroweak scale without contradicting the stringent precision data and collider bounds on new light degrees of freedom. We introduce a new way of modeling the physics beyond the Standard Model by considering fake, strictly off-shell degrees of freedom: the fakeons. To demonstrate the approach and exemplify its reach, we re-analyze the phenomenology of the Inert Doublet Model under the assumption that the second doublet is a fakeon. Remarkably, the fake doublet avoids the most stringent $Z$-pole constraints regardless of the chosen mass scale, thereby allowing for the presence of new effects well below the electroweak scale. Furthermore, the absence of on-shell propagation prevents fakeons from inducing missing energy signatures in collider experiments. The distinguishing features of the model appear at the loop level, where fakeons modify the Higgs boson $h\to\gamma\gamma$ decay width and the Higgs trilinear coupling. The running of Standard Model parameters proceeds as in the usual Inert Doublet Model case. Therefore, the fake doublet can also ensure the stability of the Standard Model vacuum. Our work shows that fakeons are a valid alternative to the usual tools of particle physics model building, with the potential to shape a new paradigm, where the significance of the existing experimental constraints towards new physics must necessarily be reconsidered., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, version accepted by JHEP

We consider the boosted dark matter solution of the XENON1T excess to constrain the framework through loop-generated processes. The interaction of the boosted dark matter component, which sources the signal, effectively couples the cold dark matter background to the electrons, making it potentially visible in the electron recoil searches. Similarly, once the radiative corrections due to the Standard Model are taken into account, dark matter also scatters on quarks and becomes observable in nuclear recoil measurements. By analysing these processes, we find that the current direct detection constraints exclude the upper mass range selected by the anomaly if the boosted component is generated through dark matter annihilation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We put forward the framework of simplified leptoquark models: simple extensions of the Standard Model that serve as benchmarks to test the interactions of leptons with new colored degrees of freedom considered, for instance, in leptoquark or grand unification models. As a first application of the scheme, we analyze the power of precision lepton observables by computing gauge invariant two-loop radiative corrections to the lepton-photon vertex, generated here by Yukawa interactions between the lepton and new colored degrees of freedom. The result, detailed in explicit expressions for the involved form factors, improves on the literature for the higher loop order considered and highlights the existence of regions in the parameter space of the model where two-loop corrections cannot be neglected., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures. We provide a dynamical mechanism for the generation of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix in the context of a recently proposed model of flavor. The framework, based on the paradigm that Yukawa couplings are effective low energy couplings generated radiatively by dark sector interactions, is here extended to include a new scalar field which plays the role of a {\it dark flavon}. Being singlet under the Standard Model gauge group but charged under the $U(1)$ symmetry of the dark sector, this particle sources new two- and three-loop diagrams that result in off-diagonal Yukawa interactions, thereby providing a simple explanation for the observed structure of the CKM matrix. By using an effective parametrization of these new loop contributions, we show that the CKM matrix elements can be correctly reproduced for perturbative values of the involved couplings. We outline the rich phenomenology predicted by the scenario and detail its implications for the LHC and future collider experiments.

We propose a new framework for the observed flavor hierarchy and mixing based on left-right supersymmetry. The model contains the most minimal Higgs sector consisting only of gauge doublets which forbid the standard model Yukawa couplings. New mediator fields then connect the left- and right-chiral fermion sectors and result in effective tree level Yukawa couplings for the third generation charged fermions. The remaining fermions, including all neutrinos, acquire effective Yukawa couplings sourced by the supersymmetry breaking sector at loop level. We predict new TeV range scalars, as well as heavier fermions and vector bosons, that can be discovered at the LHC and future colliders., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

Scalar theories can account for the current $R_{D^{(*)}}$ measurements through a vector operator $\bar{c}_L \gamma_{\mu} b_L\,\bar{\tau}_L \gamma^{\mu}\nu_L$ induced at the loop level. Once the vector contribution is considered on top of a subdominant tree-level scalar component, the predicted value of $R_{D^{(*)}}$ falls within the $1\sigma$ region indicated by the experiments. We explicitly demonstrate this claim in the framework of a three Higgs doublet model extended with GeV scale right-handed neutrinos, by matching the anomalous signal for perturbative values of the involved couplings and respecting the bounds from complementary flavour physics measurements. Remarkably, we furthermore show that the proposed framework can be employed to simultaneously explain also the present $R_{K^{(*)}}$ measurement, as well as the deviation in $\epsilon'/\epsilon$ currently being debated in the literature. These results are obtained by considering the contribution of relatively light right-handed neutrinos which are fundamental in mediating the processes behind the anomalous signals. In this way our findings reveal a new possible connection that links the flavour anomalies to the phenomenology of extended Higgs sector and neutrino physics., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures

Within classically conformal models, the spontaneous breaking of scale invariance is usually associated to a strong first order phase transition that results in a gravitational wave background within the reach of future space-based interferometers. In this paper we study the case of the classically conformal gauged B-L model, analysing the impact of this minimal extension of the Standard Model on the dynamics of the electroweak symmetry breaking and derive its gravitational wave signature. Particular attention is paid to the problem of vacuum stability and to the role of the QCD phase transition, which we prove responsible for concluding the symmetry breaking transition in part of the considered parameter space. Finally, we calculate the gravitational wave signal emitted in the process, finding that a large part of the parameter space of the model can be probed by LISA., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures. Recent measurements of semileptonic B-meson decays seemingly imply violations of lepton flavor universality beyond the Standard Model predictions. With three-level explanations based on extended Higgs sectors being strongly challenged by the measurements of the $B_c^-$ lifetime, new theories invoking leptoquark or vector fields appear as the only feasible answer. However, in this work we show that simple scalar extensions of the Standard Model still offer a possible solution to the $B$ physics puzzle, owing to sizeable loop-level corrections which mimic the effects of new vector contributions. Considering a simplified model characterised by a charged and a neutral scalar particle, we verify the compatibility of the observed $R_{D^{(*)}}$ signal with the relevant collider bounds. The recently claimed anomaly in the measurement of the 21 cm hydrogen absorption signal by EDGES at $z\sim 17$, if cosmological, requires the existence of new physics. The possible attempts to resolve the anomaly rely on either (i) cooling the hydrogen gas via new dark matter-hydrogen interactions or (ii) modifying the soft photon background beyond the standard CMB one, as possibly suggested also by the ARCADE~2 excess. We argue that solutions belonging to the first class are generally in tension with cosmological dark matter probes once simple dark sector models are considered. Therefore, we propose soft photon emission by light dark matter as a natural solution to the 21 cm anomaly, studying a few realizations of this scenario. In the framework of the $(B-L)$ Supersymmetric Standard Model (BLSSM), we assess the ability of ground and space based experiments to establish the nature of its prevalent Dark Matter (DM) candidate, the sneutrino, which could either be CP-even or -odd. Firstly, by benchmarking this theory construct against the results obtained by the Planck spacecraft, we extract the portions of the BLSSM parameter space compliant with relic density data. Secondly, we show that, based on current sensitivities of the Fermi Large Area Telescope (FermiLAT) and their future projections, the study of high-energy $\gamma$-ray spectra will eventually enable us to extract evidence of this DM candidate through its annihilations into $W^+W^-$ pairs (in turn emitting photons), in the form of both an integrated flux and a differential energy spectrum which cannot be reconciled with the assumption of DM being fermionic (like, e.g., a neutralino), although it should not be possible to distinguish between the scalar and pseudoscalar hypotheses. Thirdly, we show that, while underground direct detection experiments will have little scope in testing sneutrino DM, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) may be able to do so in a variety of multi-lepton signatures, with and without accompanying jets (plus missing transverse energy), following data collection during Run 2 and 3., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

We investigate how the Fine-Tuning (FT) in the B-L Supersymmetric Standard Model (BLSSM) compares to the Minimally Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), where both models have universality. This is done for two scales: both low (i.e. collider) and high (i.e. Grand Unified Theory (GUT)) scales. We see this is similar for both models and the two scale regimes. We also study the possible Dark Matter (DM) candidates each model offers in a realistic scenario satisfying relic density constraints. In this report, we compare the naturalness and Dark Matter (DM) properties of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) and the $B-L$ Supersymmetric Standard Model (BLSSM), with universality in both cases. We do this by adopting standard measures for the quantitative analysis of the Fine-Tuning (FT), at both low (i.e. supersymmetric (SUSY)) and high (i.e. unification) scales. We will see a similar level of FT for both models in these scenarios, with a slightly better FT for the BLSSM at SUSY scales and MSSM at Grand Unification Theory (GUT) scales. There has been a steady interest in flavor anomalies and their global fits as ideal probes of new physics. If the anomalies are real, one promising explanation is a new $Z'$ gauge boson with flavor-changing coupling to bottom and strange quarks and a flavor-conserving coupling to muons and, possibly, electrons. We point out that direct production of such a $Z'$, emerging from the collision of $b$ and $s$ quarks, may offer a complementary window into these phenomena because collider searches already provide competitive constraints. On top of that, we analyse the same $Z'$ scenario in relation to another long-standing discrepancy between theory and experiment that concerns the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon. By scanning the allowed $Z'$ coupling strengths in the low-mass region, we assess the compatibility of the signals from LHCb with the $Z'$ searches in the high energy LHC data and the measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the involved leptons. We also argue that observations of the latter can break the degeneracy pattern in the Wilson coefficients $C_9$ and $C_{10}$ presented by LHCb data. The $Z'$ model we consider is compatible with the new measurement of $R_{K^*}$, therefore it can potentially account for the long-standing deviations observed in $B$-physics., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. We study the naturalness properties of the $B-L$ Supersymmetric Standard Model (BLSSM) and compare them to those of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) at both low (i.e., Large Hadron Collider) energies and high (i.e., unification) scales. By adopting standard measures of naturalness, we assess that, in presence of full unification of the additional gauge couplings and scalar/fermionic masses of the BLSSM, such a scenario reveals a somewhat higher degree of Fine-Tuning (FT) than the MSSM, when the latter is computed at the unification scale and all available theoretical and experimental constraints, but the Dark Matter (DM) ones, are taken into account. Yet, such a difference, driven primarily by the collider limits requiring a high mass for the gauge boson associated to the breaking of the additional $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge group of the BLSSM in addition to the $SU(3)_C\times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ of the MSSM, should be regarded as a modest price to pay for the former in relation to the latter, if one notices that the non-minimal scenario offers a significant volume of parameter space where numerous DM solutions of different compositions can be found to the relic density constraints, unlike the case of the minimal structure, wherein only one type of solution is accessible over an ever diminishing parameter space. In fact, this different level of tension within the two SUSY models in complying with current data is well revealed when the FT measure is recomputed in terms of the low energy spectra of the two models, over their allowed regions of parameter space now in presence of all DM bounds, as it is shown that the tendency is now opposite, the BLSSM appearing more natural than the MSSM., Comment: 28 pages, 18 figures

We study the high-energy behaviour of a class of anomaly-free abelian extensions of the Standard Model. We focus on the interplay among the phenomenological characterisation of the model and the use of precise renormalisation group methods. Using as boundary conditions regions of the parameter space at the verge of current LHC probe, interesting unification patterns emerge linked to thresholds belonging to a SO(10) grand unification theory (GUT). We stress how the evolution of the mixing between the two abelian factors may provide a valuable tool to address the candidate high-energy embedding. We consider a class of minimal abelian extensions of the Standard Model with an extra neutral gauge boson $Z'$ at the TeV scale. In these scenarios an extended scalar sector and heavy right-handed neutrinos are naturally envisaged. We present some of their striking signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, the most interesting arising from a $Z'$ decaying to heavy neutrino pairs as well as a heavy scalar decaying to two Standard Model Higgses. We study a class of non-exotic minimal $U(1) '$ extensions of the Standard Model, which includes all scenarios that are anomaly-free with the ordinary fermion content augmented by one Right-Handed neutrino per generation, wherein the new Abelian gauge group is spontaneously broken by the non-zero Vacuum Expectation Value of an additional Higgs singlet field, in turn providing mass to a $Z'$ state. By adopting the $B-L$ example, whose results can be recast into those pertaining to the whole aforementioned class, and allowing for both scalar and gauge mixing, we first extract the surviving parameter space in presence of up-to-date theoretical and experimental constraints. Over the corresponding parameter configurations, we then delineate the high energy behaviour of such constructs in terms of their stability and perturbativity. Finally, we highlight key production and decay channels of the new states entering the spectra of this class of models, i.e., heavy neutrinos, a second Higgs state and the $Z'$, which are amenable to experimental investigation at the Large Hadron Collider. We therefore set the stage to establish a direct link between measurements obtainable at the Electro-Weak scale and the dynamics of the underlying model up to those where a Grand Unification Theory embedding a $U(1)'$ can be realised., Comment: 32 pages, 59 figures, journal version

We present a renormalization group study of the scalar potential in a minimal $U(1)_{B-L}$ extension of the Standard Model involving one extra heavier Higgs and three heavy right-handed neutrinos with family universal B-L charge assignments. We implement a type-I seesaw for the masses of the light neutrinos of the Standard Model. In particular, compared to a previous study, we perform a two-loop extension of the evolution, showing that two-loop effects are essential for the study of the stability of the scalar potential up to the Planck scale. The analysis includes the contribution of the kinetic mixing between the two abelian gauge groups, which is radiatively generated by the evolution, and the one-loop matching conditions at the electroweak scale. By requiring the stability of the potential up to the Planck mass, significant constraints on the masses of the heavy neutrinos, on the gauge couplings and the mixing in the Higgs sector are identified., Comment: Version to be published in JHEP

In this paper we revisit and update the computation of thermal corrections to the stability of the electroweak vacuum in the Standard Model. At zero temperature, we make use of the full two-loop effective potential, improved by three-loop beta functions with two-loop matching conditions. At finite temperature, we include one-loop thermal corrections together with resummation of daisy diagrams. We solve numerically---both at zero and finite temperature---the bounce equation, thus providing an accurate description of the thermal tunneling. Assuming a maximum temperature in the early Universe of the order of $10^{18}$ GeV, we find that at finite temperature the instability bound excludes values of the top mass $M_t \gtrsim 173.6$ GeV, with $M_h \simeq 125$ GeV and including uncertainties on the strong coupling. We discuss the validity and temperature-dependence of this bound in the early Universe, with a special focus on the reheating phase after inflation., Comment: 13 pages (two-column format), 13 figures

The scale of neutrino masses and the Planck scale are separated by more than twenty-seven order of magnitudes. However, they can be linked by imposing the stability of the electroweak (EW) vacuum. The crucial ingredient is provided by the generation of neutrino masses via a seesaw mechanism triggered by Yukawa interactions between the standard model (SM) Higgs and lepton doublets and additional heavy right-handed neutrinos. These neutrinos participate to the renormalization group (RG) running of the dimensionless SM couplings, affecting their high-energy behavior. The Higgs quartic coupling is dragged towards negative values, thus altering the stability of the EW vacuum. In the usual type-I seesaw model, this effect is too small to be a threat since, in order to comply with low-energy neutrino data, one is forced to consider either too small Yukawa couplings or too heavy right-handed neutrinos. In this paper we explore this general idea in the context of low-scale seesaw models. These models are characterized by sizable Yukawa couplings and right-handed neutrinos with mass of the order of the EW scale, thus maximizing their impact on the RG flow. As a general result, we find that Yukawa couplings such that ${\rm Tr}(Y_{\nu}^{\dag}Y_{\nu}) \gtrsim 0.4$ are excluded. We discuss the impact of this bound on several observables, with a special focus on the lepton flavor violating process $\mu\to e\gamma$ and the neutrino-less double beta decay., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures. We investigate the stability of the scalar potential in a minimal $U(1)'$ extension of the Standard Model augmented by an extra complex scalar and three right handed neutrinos. We consider a type-I seesaw scenario for the generation of the small neutrino masses. Moreover, we focus our analysis on a class of models potentially accessible at the LHC experiment, in which the vacuum expectation value of the extra scalar is chosen in the TeV range. We discuss, in conformally invariant field theories such as QCD with massless fermions, a possible link between the perturbative signature of the conformal anomaly, in the form of anomaly poles of the 1-particle irreducible effective action, and its description in terms of Wess-Zumino actions with a dilaton. The two descriptions are expected to capture the UV and IR behaviour of the conformal anomaly, in terms of fundamental and effective degrees of freedom respectively, with the dilaton effective state appearing in a nonlinear realization. As in the chiral case, conformal anomalies seem to be related to the appearance of these effective interactions in the 1PI action in all the gauge-invariant sectors of the Standard Model. We show that, as a consequence of the underlying anomalous symmetry, the infinite hierarchy of recurrence relations involving self-interactions of the dilaton is entirely determined only by the first four of them. We investigate a minimal $U(1)'$ extension of the Standard Model with one extra complex scalar and generic gauge charge assignments. We use a type-I seesaw mechanism with three heavy right handed neutrinos to illustrate the constraints on the charges, on their mass and on the mixing angle of the two scalars, derived by requiring the vacuum stability of the scalar potential. We focus our study on a scenario which could be accessible at the LHC, by selecting a vacuum expectation value of the extra Higgs in the TeV range and determining the constraints that emerge in the parameter space. To illustrate the generality of the approach, specific gauge choices corresponding to $U(1)_{B-L}, U(1)_R$ and $U(1)_\chi$ are separately analyzed. Our results are based on a modified expression of one of the $\beta$ functions of the quartic couplings of the scalar potential compared to the previous literature. This is due to a change in the coefficient of the Yukawa term of the right handed neutrinos. We extend a previous analysis on the derivation of the dilaton Wess-Zumino (WZ) action in $d=4$, based on the method of Weyl gauging, to $6$ dimensions. As in the previous case, we discuss the structure of the same action in dimensional regularization using 6-dimensional Weyl invariants, extracting the dilaton interactions in the most general scheme, with the inclusion of the local anomaly terms. As an application, we present the WZ action for the (2,0) tensor multiplet, which has been investigated in the past in the context of the $AdS_7/CFT_6$ holographic anomaly matching. We then extend to $d=6$ the investigation of fully traced correlation functions of EMT's, formerly presented in $d=4$, showing that their hierarchy is functionally related only to the first 6 correlators. We use the method of Weyl-gauging in the determination of the Wess-Zumino conformal anomaly action, to show that in any even ($d = 2 k$) dimensions all the hierarchy of correlation functions involving traces of the energy-momentum tensor is determined in terms of those of lower orders, up to $2 k$. We work out explicitly the case $d=4$, and show that in this case in any conformal field theory only the first 4 traced correlators are independent. All the remaining correlators are recursively generated by the first 4. The result is a consequence of the cocycle condition which defines the Wess-Zumino action and of the finite order of its dilaton interactions., Comment: 18 pages

We investigate the Standard Model in the nearly conformal limit, in which conformal symmetry is broken only by the dilatation anomaly, through a hierarchy of anomalous Ward identities for the divergence of its dilatation current. In this approximation, the identities allow to extract the coupling of the dilaton to the trace anomaly, which we compute up to the quartic order in the conformal breaking scale. Our approach can be easily extended to discuss the anomaly contributions to the dilaton effective action to an arbitrarily high order.
