This paper describes a novel Electrical Machine and Power Electronic Training Tool (EM&PE[subscript TT]), a methodology for using it, and associated experimental educational activities. The training tool is implemented by recreating a whole power electronics system, divided into modular blocks. This process is similar to that applied when analyzing a piece of industrial equipment by the functions of its various parts. The EM&PE[subscript TT] is divided into five areas: the power block, the electronic switch command, instrumentation, the control system, and the application environment. The training tool lets a user analyze each functional block and the relationships between functional blocks; it can be used either in local or remote mode, thus ensuring optimal effectiveness of the proposed learning methodology. The students can redesign the hardware and software blocks before reassembling them; this allows various different experimental projects to be run concurrently in the same training tool. The results presented here show that EM&PE[subscript TT] improves engineering students' technical skills and their motivation in experimental work. (Contains 14 figures and 1 table.)

A novel sensorless integral sliding-mode control for induction motors is discussed. Besides, the control scheme provides global asymptotic speed tracking in the presence of unknown parameters and load torque. For this purpose, the control scheme makes use of an improved method of speed estimation operating on the principle of a speed adaptive flux and current observer. As it is known, an observer is basically an estimator that uses a plant model and a feedback loop. In particular, an observer is constructed, which provides a speed estimation on the basis of the measured stator voltages and currents. Then a sliding-mode controller with an integral switching surface is considered. The closed-loop stability of the proposed controller is proved under parameter uncertainties and load disturbances, using the Lyapunov stability theory. Simulated results show that the proposed controller, jointly with the proposed observer, provide high-performance dynamic characteristics and that this scheme is robust with respect to plant parameter variations and external load disturbances. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed control scheme is proved by means of experimental results over a real induction motor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data provides unprecedented information on cell fate decisions; however, the spatial arrangement of cells is often lost. Several recent computational methods have been developed to impute spatial information onto a scRNA-seq dataset through analyzing known spatial expression patterns of a small subset of genes known as a reference atlas. However, there is a lack of comprehensive analysis of the accuracy, precision, and robustness of the mappings, along with the generalizability of these methods, which are often designed for specific systems. We present a system-adaptive deep learning-based method (DEEPsc) to impute spatial information onto a scRNA-seq dataset from a given spatial reference atlas. By introducing a comprehensive set of metrics that evaluate the spatial mapping methods, we compare DEEPsc with four existing methods on four biological systems. We find that while DEEPsc has comparable accuracy to other methods, an improved balance between precision and robustness is achieved. DEEPsc provides a data-adaptive tool to connect scRNA-seq datasets and spatial imaging datasets to analyze cell fate decisions. Our implementation with a uniform API can serve as a portal with access to all the methods investigated in this work for spatial exploration of cell fate decisions in scRNA-seq data. This study was aimed at determining if a GnRH analogue, buserelin, could be used for ovulation induction in rabbit does submitted to artificial insemination (AI) by intravaginal administration, by adding the hormone to the seminal dose. In a first experiment, 39 secondiparous experimental does (Hyplus strain PS19, Grimaud Frères, France, of about 30 weeks of age) were divided into 3 groups of 13 does each, which at the moment of AI received the following treatments, respectively: (1) control: an intramuscular injection of buserelin (0.8 microg/doe), (2) 8 microg/doe of buserelin added to the insemination dose, and (3) 16 microg/doe of buserelin added to the insemination dose. The experiment was done using 3 consecutive cycles at 42 day-intervals (n = 39). Four does from each of the 3 groups had blood taken at the fourth cycle for LH determination at 0, 60, 90, 120 and 150 min relative to AI. Kindling rates were 82% (28/34), 56% (29/36) and 85% (33/39), respectively for treatments 1, 2 and 3. In the does of groups 2 and 3, LH peaks were detected 60 min after AI, whereas in the does from group 1, the LH peak was detected 90 min after AI. Prolificacy was not different for the 3 treatments (average litter sizes ranged from 10.4 to 10.8). In a second experiment, 3 buserelin concentrations (8, 12 and 16 microg/doe) were used intravaginally and compared with the control treatment (0.8 microg/doe, via intramuscular). This experiment was done using 100 nulliparous rabbit does (Hyplus strain PS19, Grimaud Frères, France, of about 19 weeks of age) (4 groups of 25 does each) located on a commercial farm, to test if the previous results would be confirmed under field conditions. Kindling rates were no different (P < 0.05) for the 4 treatment groups [91.7% (22/24), 79.2% (19/24), 87.0% (20/23) and 87.5% (21/24) respectively for the control, 8, 12 and 16 microg of intravaginal buserelin], however, prolificacy was higher when using the maximal dose of intravaginal buserelin (11.7 vs. 9.4 for the control group). It was concluded that buserelin can be used for ovulation induction in rabbit does when included in the seminal dose, with similar AI results as those obtained when the hormone is administered intramuscularly.

This study aims to determine if Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotrophin (PMSG), used for oestrous synchronization in multiparous lactating does, could be replaced by one of the following lighting schedules without impairing reproductive performance: (a) 12-h L (light)/12-h D (dark) or (b) 8-h L/16-h D, until day 6 before artificial insemination (AI), when in both cases photoperiod was changed to 16-h L/8-h D and maintained until the day of AI, and in the following 4 days post Al the light hours were progressively reduced to the initial schedules. Two groups of 20 does each were respectively submitted to one of the lighting schedules specified above. All does were artificially inseminated in 6 consecutive cycles at 42 days intervals. In the first, third and fifth AIs, PMSG (20 IU/doe via sc 48 h before AI) was used in the two groups of does, whereas in the second, fourth and sixth Als no hormonal treatment was used. Degree of oestrous synchronization (also referred in text as sexual receptivity) was estimated by the colour of the vulva at AI. Reproductive performance of does was evaluated based on fertility (kindling rates), prolificity, mortality at birth, mortality at 21 days post birth, weight of the litter at 21 days post birth and number of weaned rabbits. Oestrous was better synchronized when PMSG was used with any of the two lighting programs. Without using PMSG, a photoperiod of 12-h L/12-h D until 6 days before AI resulted in a better sexual receptivity of does than 8-h L/16-h D. Fertility, prolificity, mortality of young rabbits at 21 days, the weight of the litters at 21 days and the number of weaned rabbits did not vary with the lighting program and were not affected by the PMSG treatment. Mortality at birth, however, was higher (+1 dead kit per litter) in litters housed under a light program of 12-h L/12-h D. Global productivity (number of weaned rabbits per 100 inseminated does) was better when using PMSG, for both lighting schedules. When using a photoperiod of 12-h L/12-h D until 6 days before AI, and omitting the PMSG treatment, global productivity was scarcely reduced, however, it was considerably impaired when using a photoperiod of 8-h L/16-h D until 6 days before AI and no PMSG treatment.
