We focus on the algebraic area probability distribution of planar random walks on a square lattice with $m_1$, $m_2$, $l_1$ and $l_2$ steps right, left, up and down. We aim, in particular, at the algebraic area generating function $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(Q)$ evaluated at $Q=e^{2\i\pi\over q}$, a root of unity, when both $m_1-m_2$ and $l_1-l_2$ are multiples of $q$. In the simple case of staircase walks, a geometrical interpretation of $Z_{m,0,l,0}(e^\frac{2i\pi}{q})$ in terms of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is illustrated. Then, an expression for $Z_{m_1,m_2,l_1,l_2}(-1)$, which is relevant to the Stembridge's case, is proposed. A system of N interacting bosons or fermions in a two-dimensional harmonic potential (or, equivalently, magnetic field) whose states are projected onto the lowest Landau level is considered. Generic expressions are derived for matrix elements of any interaction, in the basis of angular momentum eigenstates. For the fermion "ground state" (N=1 Laughlin state), this makes it possible to exactly calculate its energy all the way up to the mesoscopic regime N ~ 1000. The algebraic area probability distribution of closed planar random walks of length N on a square lattice is considered. The generating function for the distribution satisfies a recurrence relation in which the combinatorics is encoded. A particular case generalizes the q-binomial theorem to the case of three addends. At 6th order in perturbation theory, the random magnetic impurity problem at second order in impurity density narrows down to the evaluation of a single Feynman diagram with maximal impurity line crossing. This diagram can be rewritten as a sum of ordinary integrals and nested double integrals of products of the modified Bessel functions $K_{\nu}$ and $I_{\nu}$, with $\nu=0,1$. That sum, in turn, is shown to be a linear combination with rational coefficients of $(2^5-1)\zeta(5)$, $\int_0^{\infty} u K_0(u)^6 du$ and $\int_0^{\infty} u^3 K_0(u)^6 du$. Unlike what happens at lower orders, these two integrals are not linear combinations with rational coefficients of Euler sums, even though they appear in combination with $\zeta(5)$. On the other hand, any integral $\int_0^{\infty} u^{n+1} K_0(u)^p (uK_1(u))^q du$ with weight $p+q=6$ and an even $n$ is shown to be a linear combination with rational coefficients of the above two integrals and 1, a result that can be easily generalized to any weight $p+q=k$. The lowest-Landau-level anyon model becomes nonperiodic in the statistics parameter when the finite size of the attached flux tubes is taken into account. The finite-size effects cause the inverse proportional relation between the critical filling factor and the statistics parameter to be nonperiodically continued in the screening regime, where the fluxes are anti-parallel to the external magnetic field -- at critical filling, the external magnetic field is entirely screened by the mean magnetic field associated with the flux tubes. A clustering argument is proposed to select particular values of the statistics parameter. In this way, IQHE and FQHE fillings are obtained in terms of gapped nondegenerate LLL-anyonic wave functions. Jain's series are reproduced without the need to populate higher Landau levels. New FQHE series are proposed, like, in particular, the particle-hole complementary series of the Laughlin one. An N-body bosonic model with delta-contact interactions projected on the lowest Landau level is considered. For a given number of particles in a given angular momentum sector, any energy level can be obtained exactly by means of diagonalizing a finite matrix: they are roots of algebraic equations. A complete solution of the three-body problem is presented, some general properties of the N-body spectrum are pointed out, and a number of novel exact analytic eigenstates are obtained. The FQHE N-fermion model with Laplacian-delta interactions is also considered along the same lines of analysis. A two-dimensional quantum mechanical system consisting of a particle coupled to two magnetic impurities of different strengths, in a harmonic potential, is considered. Topological boundary conditions at impurity locations imply that the wave functions are linear combinations of two-dimensional harmonics. The thermodynamics of the anyon model projected on the lowest Landau level (LLL) of an external magnetic field is addressed in the anti-screening regime, where the flux tubes carried by the anyons are parallel to the magnetic field. It is claimed that the LLL-anyon equation of state, which is known in the screening regime, can be analytically continued in the statistical parameter across the Fermi point to the antiscreening regime up to the vicinity (whose width tends to zero when the magnetic field becomes infinite) of the Bose point. There, an unphysical discontinuity arises due to the dropping of the non-LLL eigenstates which join the LLL, making the LLL approximation no longer valid. However, taking into account the effect of the non-LLL states at the Bose point would only smoothen the discontinuity and not alter the physics which is captured by the LLL projection: Close to the Bose point, the critical filling factor either goes to infinity (usual bosons) in the screening situation, or to 1/2 in the anti-screening situation, the difference between the flux tubes orientation being relevant even when they carry an infinitesimal fraction of the flux quantum. An exclusion statistics interpretation is adduced, which explains this situation in semiclassical terms. It is further shown how the exact solutions of the 3-anyon problem support this scenario as far as the third cluster coefficient is concerned., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures, LaTex 2e

We have computed by a Monte Carlo method the fourth virial coefficient of free anyons, as a function of the statistics angle theta. It can be fitted by a four term Fourier series, in which two coefficients are fixed by the known perturbative results at the boson and fermion points. We compute partition functions by means of path integrals, which we represent diagrammatically in such a way that the connected diagrams give the cluster coefficients. This provides a general proof that all cluster and virial coefficients are finite. We give explicit polynomial approximations for all path integral contributions to all cluster coefficients, implying that only the second virial coefficient is statistics dependent, as is the case for two-dimensional exclusion statistics. It is well known that charges coupled to a pure Chern-Simons gauge field in (2+1) dimensions undergo an effective change of statistics, i.e., become anyons. We will consider several generalizations thereof, arising when the gauge field is more general. The first one is ``multispecies anyons''---charged particles of several species coupled to one, or possibly several, Chern-Simons fields. The second one is finite-size anyons, which are charged particles coupled to a gauge field described by the Chern-Simons term plus some other term. In fact, rigorously speaking, quasielectrons and quasiholes in the fractional quantum Hall effect are multispecies finite-size anyons. The third one is an analog of finite-size anyons which arises in a model with a mixed Chern-Simons term; notably, this model is P,T-invariant, which opens the way for practical applications even when there is no parity-breaking magnetic field., Comment: 6 pages, LATEX. Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics for ideal fractional exclusion statistics with mutual statistical interactions is studied systematically. We discuss properties of the single-state partition functions and derive the general form of the cluster expansion. Assuming a certain scaling of the single-particle partition functions, relevant to systems of noninteracting particles with various dispersion laws, both in a box and in an external harmonic potential, we derive a unified form of the virial expansion. For the case of a symmetric statistics matrix at a constant density of states, the thermodynamics is analyzed completely. We solve the microscopic problem of multispecies anyons in the lowest Landau level for arbitrary values of particle charges and masses (but the same sign of charges). Based on this, we derive the equation of state which has the form implied by exclusion statistics, with the statistics matrix coinciding with the exchange statistics matrix of anyons. It is shown how to construct many-particle quantum-mechanical spectra of particles obeying multispecies exclusion statistics, both in one and in two dimensions. We use the method of solving the three-anyon problem developed in our earlier publication to evaluate numerically the third virial coefficient of free anyons. In order to improve precision, we explicitly correct for truncation effects. We address the problem of finite-size anyons, i.e., composites of charges and finite radius magnetic flux tubes. Making perturbative calculations in this problem meets certain difficulties reminiscent of those in the problem of pointlike anyons. We show how to circumvent these difficulties for anyons of arbitrary spin. The case of spin 1/2 is special because it allows for a direct application of perturbation theory, while for any other spin, a redefinition of the wave function is necessary. Quantum decoherence is of primary importance for relaxation to an equilibrium distribution and, accordingly, for equilibrium processes. We demonstrate how coherence breaking implies evolution to a microcanonical distribution (``microcanonical postulate'') and, on that ground, consider an adiabatic process, in which there is no thermostat. We stress its difference from a zero-polytropic process, i.e., a process with zero heat capacity but involving a thermostat. We find the distribution for the adiabatic process and show that (i) in the classical limit this distribution is canonical, (ii) for macroscopic systems, the mean values of energy for adiabatic and zero-polytropic processes are the same, but its fluctuations are different, and (iii) in general, adiabatic and zero-polytropic processes are different, which is particularly essential for mesoscopic systems; for those latter, an adiabatic process is in general irreversible., Comment: 4 pages, LATEX, Elsevier style espcrc1.sty, to appear in Proceedings of ISQM-Tokyo '95

We develop the concept of trajectories in anyon spectra, i.e., the continuous dependence of energy levels on the kinetic angular momentum. It provides a more economical and unified description, since each trajectory contains an infinite number of points corresponding to the same statistics. For a system of non-interacting anyons in a harmonic potential, each trajectory consists of two infinite straight line segments, in general connected by a nonlinear piece. We give the systematics of the three-anyon trajectories. The trajectories in general cross each other at the bosonic/fermionic points. We address the problem of multispecies anyons, i.e. particles of different species whose wave function is subject to anyonlike conditions. The cluster and virial coefficients are considered. We consider particles in three-dimensional space, which have a certain probability to find themselves in a thin layer (``plane''), where they are assumed to be well described by a planar Hamiltonian and are subject to Aharonov-Bohm-type interaction. We demonstrate that their planar motion is then anyonlike, with the ``effective statistical parameter'' proportional essentially to the square of the probability. The spectrum of a charged particle coupled to Aharonov-Bohm/anyon gauge fields displays a nonanalytic behavior in the coupling constant. Within perturbation theory, this gives rise to certain singularities which can be handled by adding a repulsive contact term to the Hamiltonian. We discuss the case of smeared flux tubes with an arbitrary profile and show that the contact term can be interpreted as the coupling of a magnetic moment spinlike degree of freedom to the magnetic field inside the flux tube. We solve, by separation of variables, the problem of three anyons with a harmonic oscillator potential. The anyonic symmetry conditions from cyclic permutations are separable in our coordinates. The conditions from two-particle transpositions are not separable, but can be expressed as reflection symmetry conditions on the wave function and its normal derivative on the boundary of a circle. Thus the problem becomes one-dimensional. We solve this problem numerically by discretization. $N$-point discretization with very small $N$ is often a good first approximation, on the other hand convergence as $N\to\infty$ is sometimes very slow., Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX2.09
