Abstract

Arithmetical properties of a finite group are properties of the group which are defined by its arithmetical parameters such as the order of the group, the element orders and so on. In this paper, we discuss a number of results on arithmetical properties of finite groups and characterizations of finite groups by their arithmetical parameters obtained recently. This paper is based on the talk by the author given in frame of (WM)^2 - World Meeting for Women in Mathematics-2022.

Abstract

The commuting graph of a group $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the elements of $G$, two distinct vertices joined if they commute. Our purpose in this paper is twofold: we discuss the computational problem of deciding whether a given graph is the commuting graph of a finite group; we give a quasipolynomial algorithm, and a polynomial algorithm for the case when the group is an extra\-special p-group for p an odd prime; we give new results on the question of whether the commuting graph of a given group is a cograph or a chordal graph, two classes of graphs defined by forbidden subgraphs. The problems are not unrelated, since there are a number of cases where hard computational problems on graphs are easier when restricted to special classes of graphs; we conjecture that the recognition problem is polynomial for cographs and chordal graphs., Comment: Also replaces arXiv 2206.01059

4. On characterization by Gruenberg-Kegel graph of finite simple exceptional groups of Lie type

Abstract

The Gruenberg-Kegel graph $\Gamma(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is the graph whose vertex set is the set of prime divisors of $|G|$ and in which two distinct vertices $r$ and $s$ are adjacent if and only if there exists an element of order $rs$ in $G$. A finite group $G$ is called almost recognizable (by Gruenberg-Kegel graph) if there is only finite number of pairwise non-isomorphic finite groups having Gruenberg-Kegel graph as $G$. If $G$ is not almost recognizable, then it is called unrecognizable (by Gruenberg--Kegel graph). Recently P.J. Cameron and the first author have proved that if a finite group is almost recognizable, then the group is almost simple. Thus, the question of which almost simple groups (in particular, finite simple groups) are almost recognizable is of prime interest. We prove that every finite simple exceptional group of Lie type, which is isomorphic to neither ${^2}B_2(2^{2n+1})$ with $n\geq1$ nor $G_2(3)$ and whose Gruenberg-Kegel graph has at least three connected components, is almost recognizable. 7. Criterion of unrecognizability of a finite group by its Gruenberg-Kegel graph

Abstract

The Gruenberg-Kegel graph $\Gamma(G)$ associated with a finite group $G$ has as vertices the prime divisors of $|G|$, with an edge from $p$ to $q$ if and only if $G$ contains an element of order $pq$. This graph has been the subject of much recent interest; one of our goals here is to give a survey of some of this material, relating to groups with the same Gruenberg-Kegel graph. However, our main aim is to prove several new results. Among them are the following. - There are infinitely many finite groups with the same Gruenberg-Kegel graph as the Gruenberg-Kegel of a finite group $G$ if and only if there is a finite group $H$ with non-trivial solvable radical such that $\Gamma(G)=\Gamma(H)$. - There is a function $F$ on the natural numbers with the property that if a finite $n$-vertex graph whose vertices are labelled by pairwise distinct primes is the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of more than $F(n)$ finite groups, then it is the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of infinitely many finite groups. (The function we give satisfies $F(n)=O(n^7)$, but this is probably not best possible.) - If a finite graph $\Gamma$ whose vertices are labelled by pairwise distinct primes is the Gruenberg-Kegel graph of only finitely many finite groups, then all such groups are almost simple; moreover, $\Gamma$ has at least three pairwise non-adjacent vertices, and $2$ is non-adjacent to at least one odd vertex. - Groups whose power graphs, or commuting graphs, are isomorphic have the same Gruenberg-Kegel graph. - The groups ${^2}G_2(27)$ and $E_8(2)$ are uniquely determined by the isomorphism types of their Gruenberg-Kegel graphs. In addition, we consider groups whose Gruenberg-Kegel graph has no edges. These are the groups in which every element has prime power order, and have been studied under the name \emph{EPPO groups}; completing this line of research, we give a complete list of such groups., Comment: 32 pages

A subgroup $H$ of a group $G$ is said to be {pronormal} in $G$ if $H$ and $H^g$ are conjugate in $\langle H, H^g \rangle$ for every $g \in G$. Some problems in finite group theory, combinatorics, and permutation group theory were solved in terms of pronormality. In 2012, E. Vdovin and the third author conjectured that the subgroups of odd index are pronormal in finite simple groups. Abstract

A classification of maximal subgroups of odd index in finite simple groups was given by Liebeck and Saxl and, independently, Kantor in 1980s. In the cases of alternating groups or classical groups of Lie type over fields of odd characteristics, the classification was not complete. The classification was completed by the author in 2008. In the cases of finite simple classical groups of Lie type we used results obtained in Kleidman's PhD thesis. However there is a number of flaws in this PhD thesis. The flaws were corrected by Bray, Holt, and Roney-Dougal in 2013. Given a finite group $G$, the commuting graph of $G$ is the simple graph whose vertex set is $G$, and two distinct vertices are adjacent if they commute. In this paper, we classify all finite groups whose commuting graph is split and threshold. We also investigate the structure of a group whose commuting graph is either a cograph or a chordal graph, and determine all non-abelian finite simple groups whose commuting graph is a cograph. Abstract

Extant species of Liquidambar L. exhibit a disjunct distribution between western and eastern Asia and eastern North America to Central America, with the highest species diversity being in China. In this study, two new species of Liquidambar are described from the Eocene of Hainan Island, South China: L. hainanensis on basis of the leaf fossils, and L. ovoidea based on compressions of infructescences. The co‐occurrences of L. hainanensis leaves, associated infructescences of L. ovoidea and dispersed pantoporate pollen grains have the combination of morphological features peculiar to the genera Liquidambar and former Semiliquidambar and Altingia. This is considered further palaeobotanical justification for the placement of these three genera into a single genus, Liquidambar, proposed earlier based on molecular markers. Our data provide evidence for the occurrence of an ancestral polymorphic group of Liquidambar species (L. maomingensis with associated capitate infructescences, L. bella, L. hainanensis and L. ovoidea) during the Eocene in South China, and corroborate the view that South China could have been a centre of Liquidambar speciation during the Eocene. The morphological similarity of L. hainanensis leaves to those of the extant species L. orientalis from Western Asia and the North American L. styraciflua may support the importance of both the North Atlantic Land Bridge and the Bering Land Bridge for the dispersal of Liquidambar. Analysis of fossil species of Liquidambar from eastern Asia also contributes to further understanding of patterns in the taxonomic diversity and evolutionary history of this genus. Abstract

Today, it is decisive to determine educational trends for the long-term development of both states and societies. The 21st century proposed fundamentally new approaches to setting educational goals and achieving educational results. An important step towards addressing this issue was the introduction of the “21st Century Skills” concept. One of its elements is “Cultural and civic literacy”. Thus, the international community has made an effort to conduct research in the field of citizenship education. The study aims at forming a comprehensive understanding of the content and assessing the formation of civic literacy by various subjects (in this case, participants in the educational process in the city of Moscow). The selection of research methods and the development of research tools are based on the conceptual provisions in the field of functional literacy. The research novelty is associated with the adoption of innovative international methods by Moscow educational organizations. The study results can be presented in the form of three blocks: a block that determines the level of knowledge and understanding of civic literacy; a block that describes the preconditions and current formation of civic literacy in Moscow educational institutions; a block that represents the self-assessment of civic literacy among participants in the educational process. The study results prove that the respondents demonstrate a fairly high level of proficiency in basic civic terms in the field of knowledge and understanding. This fact correlates with their level of self-esteem. According to the respondents, the necessary conditions for mastering civic literacy are systematic citizenship education at school, the formation of legal culture in families, and the availability of the Internet.

Abstract

Consideration is given to biometric indices and vitality structure of Oxytropis kungurensis Knjasev (Fabaceae), an endemic species of the South Urals and Central Cis-Ural Region, observed in 2015 and 2016 in the coenopopulation on the eastern shore of Lake Aushkul (Uchalinsky District, Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia). The paper reveals differences in plant biometrics and vitality according to the years of observation. Judging from 14 biometric indices out of 19 indices analyzed, middle-aged generative plants in 2015 surpass those in 2016. Indices that characterize the vitality structure are higher in 2015. The vitality type of the coenopopulation varies from prospering to depressive. Variations in biometric and vitality indices are associated with changing weather conditions during the vegetation period. In 2015, there were optimal conditions for plants to grow and develop.
