1. Effects of different assay configurations on pharmacological profiling of GPCR targets

Abstract

The effect of assay type and assay configuration on the pharmacological profile of a range of ligands acting at the D2 dopamine receptor was investigated in this thesis. The ligands explored have previously been shown to display a spectrum of efficacy at the D2 dopamine receptor. In competition ligand binding studies versus [³H]spiperone in HEK-293CREβlacD₂ˡ cell membranes, receptor-G protein coupling was increased in the absence of Na⁺, however the pK/ values for some agonists were higher in the presence of Na⁺, which suggested that different ligands are able to induce different receptor conformations.

Abstract

Developing primary care interprofessional (IP) experiences requires vision supported by a significant commitment of time and resources. Through concerted efforts, clinical departments can creatively partner to offer quality IP experiences. From a research perspective, we investigated whether students' perceptions changed after a combination of IP education and IP practice experience. Texas Woman's University School of Occupational Therapy students developed an oral hygiene program and presented it to TWU Dental Hygiene faculty. The Dental Hygiene students developed targeted complimentary components resulting in a comprehensive, multi-faceted IP program. Faculty and students collaborated closely, piloting the program with six 2-hour sessions, over a 3-month period at two locations for clients of a community-based organization. The pilot proved rewarding, yet challenging. Clients benefited. Students were engaged. All parties were vested in the process. However, the practical considerations (coordination of schedules and syllabi across courses, semesters and departments, IP education, advance planning to structure each agenda efficiently with a backup plan, interrater reliability, expectations, and student assessment) proved extremely complex. Based on the successful experience, faculty developed a checklist to streamline the ongoing collaboration. Data from the pre/post Interdisciplinary Education Perception Scale (IEPS) administered to students will be presented along with the checklist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase I clinical trial results for VB-111 (VBL Therapeutics) are also presented.
