This study aimed to determine the level of evidence on the association between food groups/items consumption and the risk of different cancer sites from the meta-analyses/pooled analyses of observational studies. A systematic search was executed in Scopus, PubMed/MEDLINE, and Web of Science. The criteria from the World Cancer Research Fund/American Institute for Cancer Research (WCRF/AICR) Expert Report were adopted for evidence grading. In summary, there was convincing evidence for the association between fibre intake and decreased risk of colon and breast cancer. Also, consumption of dairy products, milk, fruits, and fibre was associated with a probable decreased risk of breast cancer. Consumption of whole grains, dairy products, milk, fruits, vegetables, and fibre had a probable inverse association with the incidence risk of gastrointestinal tract cancers. More qualified studies are needed to find reliable findings on the association between various food groups/items consumption and the risk of different cancer sites.

PURPOSE: A body shape index (ABSI) and visceral; adiposity index (VAI) can reflect some cardio-metabolic risk factors in the population. To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous studies conducted on the assessment of the association between neurotrophic factors, Ghrelin and Obestatin with ABSI and VAI. We aimed to investigate this association among apparently healthy women. METHODS: Ninety apparently healthy women were recruited in the present study. All participants were in need of dietary intervention for weight loss and participated in the study before receiving any intervention. Dietary, anthropometric, physical activity, stress level and biochemical assessments, as well as blood pressure measurements were done for all participants. RESULTS: Women in the highest tertile of ABSI had significantly lower SBP compared to the lowest ABSI tertile. Women who were in the highest tertile of VAI had significantly lower serum Obestatin levels compared to the first and second tertiles in both crude and adjusted comparisons. Serum NGF, Obestatin and Ghrelin levels were significantly lower in the highest tertile of VAI compared to the lowest tertile in both crude and adjusted comparisons. HOMA-IR, serum insulin, LDL-C, TG and TC were significantly higher in the highest tertile of VAI compared to the lowest tertile. QUICKI in the highest tertiles were significantly lower than the first tertile in adjusted model. CONCLUSION: This evidence can be useful for researchers in applying appropriate anthropometric indices regarding different populations with multifactorial metabolic complications. The current findings need approving by prospective population study and also clinical trial researches.

Milk-protein-derived bioactive peptides (BPs) have been proposed as modulators of different regulatory processes involved in blood pressure regulation. Studies on the long-term effects of BPs on blood pressure have not yet been conducted. We aimed to investigate the association of dairy-originated BPs with the risk of hypertension (HTN) in the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Cohort Study (TLGS). In this cohort study, 4378 subjects with a mean follow-up period of 3.1 years were included in the final analysis. Dietary intake, physical activity, demographic, and anthropometric data and blood pressure measurements were obtained for all participants. Various types of dairy-originated BPs were determined by an in silico method. High intake of total digestion-resistant and bioactive peptides (OR: 1.31, CI 95%: 1.01-1.70), dipeptides (OR: 1.33, CI 95%: 1.03-1.73), peptides with more than seven residues (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71), glycosylated residues (OR: 1.39, CI 95%: 1.07-1.80), highly hydrophilic peptides (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71), and low hydrophobic peptides (OR: 1.32, CI 95%: 1.01-1.71) was associated with an increased risk of HTN in the adjusted model. In addition, subjects in the higher tertile of anti-HTN peptide (OR: 1.33, CI 95%: 1.02-1.72) and antidiabetic peptide (OR: 1.35, CI 95%: 1.04-1.76) intake had a higher risk of HTN than those in the lower tertile. No significant association emerged between calcium intake from dairy and incident risk of HTN. Our results showed that the intake of some forms of digestion-resistant and BPs, such as anti-HTN peptides, dipeptides, and peptides with more than seven residues, can increase the risk of HTN in the TLGS population.

Engineered probiotics (EPs) are a group of probiotics whose proteome is manipulated by biotechnological techniques. EPs have attracted a lot of attention in recent researches for preventing and treating chronic diseases. The current study has been conducted to provide an overview regarding the EPs application in the treatment of chronic disease by a comprehensive systematic review of the published articles up to January 2022. To retrieve the related publications, three databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Sciences, and Scopus) were searched systematically. Finally, all human (n = 2) and animal (n = 37) studies were included. The included articles evaluated the effects of EPs on treatment of arthritis (n = 3), cancer (n = 2), autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE; n = 6), Parkinson disease (PD; n = 1), Alzheimer diseases (AD; n = 1), colitis (n = 11), celiac disease (n = 1), diabetes (n = 8) and cardiovascular disease (CVD; n = 6). Induction of oral tolerance (OT) is the most important mechanism of EPs action in the treatment of chronic disease. Providing oral vaccine and bioactive compounds are the other mechanisms of EPs action. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The current systematic review gathered evidence about the application of EPs in the treatment of chronic diseases. Evidence suggests that EPs have very broad and potent effects in the treatment of chronic and even genetic diseases.

Summary Objectives Few epidemiological data are available regarding the associations of dietary intakes of polyphenols with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We sought to examine the associations of dietary intake of polyphenols with the prevalence of NAFLD. Methods We analyzed data from a case-control study of 225 patients with NAFLD cases and 450 controls. All participants completed a validated 168-item food frequency questionnaire, the results of which were subsequently used to calculate dietary polyphenol. Results Based on multivariate logistic regression analysis, after adjustment for age and sex, it was shown that participants who were in the highest tertile of total flavonoids (OR = 0.65, 95% CI = 0.44–0.98) and total phenolic acids (OR = 0.63, 95% CI = 0.42–0.94) were associated with a lower odds of NAFLD compared with the lowest tertile. Although the association of total flavonoids and the odds of NAFLD disappeared after additional adjustment for BMI, physical activity, smoking, SES, dietary fat, and energy intake (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.38–1.19). The odds of NAFLD was 66% lower (OR = 0.44, CI = 0.24–0.78, p for trend = 0.006) among participants who were in the highest tertile of lignans intake compared with the lowest tertile. Conclusion Our study showed that a high intake of lignans lowers the odds of NAFLD. We strongly recommend that the concepts proposed in this study must be tested in future longitudinal researches, to determine the association of total and subgroup of polyphenol intake with different stages of fatty liver diseases.

The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased worldwide and various environmental factors have accelerated this trend. Several reports have suggested that food advertising causes childhood obesity. We proposed a review study to evaluate the relationship between TV food advertisements and obesity in children. By searching over electronic databases (including PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar), the reference lists of original studies, and reviews using key search terms, 1181 articles were identified. Out of these, only 9 articles met the inclusion and quality criteria. Most of the longitudinal study carried out at the national level have reported a significant association between commercial viewing and BMI in children. The duration of these studies varied between 7 months and 5 years. The children’s TV viewing time was between 1.5 and 3.5 hours per day. Results of the reviewed studies have revealed a controversial attitude about the influence of TV food advertisements on obesity. However, three of four modeling studies indicated an increment in the prevalence of overweight and obesity following exposure to food advertisements. Further interventional and longitude studies are needed to achieve more precise results.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) both are chronic diseases affecting joints. Immune response against collagen in both diseases may have a role in the initiation and progression of the disease. There is a hypothesis that suppression of immune response vs collagen could be a therapeutic approach in RA and OA. Exposure of gut immune system to collagen is a way to suppress immune response against collagen in the joints. So, the current systematic review is aimed to evaluate the effects of collagen supplementation in OA and RA patients. In the current systematic review, online electronic databases including PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Sciences and Scopus were searched and finally 19 articles were included. The enrolled articles evaluated the effects of collagen supplementation on treatment of OA (n = 9) and RA (n = 10). Intact (n = 4) and hydrolyzed (n = 5) collagen were used to treat OA. All of the studies on RA used intact and type II collagen in their intervention. The last trials on collagen supplementation in RA and OA patients were performed in 2011 and 2016, respectively. High adverse effects of collagen supplementation and its low efficiency compared to routine treatments were reported by several included studies. Also, risk of bias assessment showed that most of the studies had poor quality. Therefore, it is not possible to definitely decide on the beneficial or detrimental effects of collagen supplementation on OA and RA patients. Further studies are needed to reach a final decision.

We aimed to evaluate the anti-cancer and immune system enhancing properties of Vitamin E succinate (VES) and methylselenic acid (MSA) administration on 4T1 breast tumor model under high-dose methotrexate (HDMTX) therapy and folinic acid (FA) rescue.Thirty six 4T1 mammary carcinoma bearing mice were randomly divided into six groups: control (untreated; n = 6), treatment-1 (T1 group; HDMTX; n = 6), T2 (T1 + FA; n = 6), T3 (T2 + MSA; n = 6), T4 (T2 + VES; n = 6) and T5 (T3 + VES; n = 6). On day 21 of the study, all surviving mice were sacrificed and primary tumors and peripheral tissues were examined for histological and gene expression assays. The expression of GATA Binding Protein-3 (GATA3), forkhead box-P3 (FOXP3), T-bet and Retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor γt (RORγt) were evaluated in tumors and spleens. Also, vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) and UL16-Binding Protein 1 (ULBP-1) expression were evaluated in tumors.The control, T4 and T5 groups were able to complete the entire 21-day study period. Also, significant tumor shrinkage was occurred in T4 group (P 0.05). Suppression of splenic FOXP3 and GATA3 were observed in the mice receiving T4 and T5 regimens. Also, induction of tumoral FOXP3 and GATA3 were achieved in the T4 and T5 groups, respectively (P 0.05). No metastasis occurred in T4 receiving group; while, lung and liver metastasis were observed in T5 group.In this study, high and fixed dose of MTX was used. Further studies are needed to optimize MTX dose along with FA, VES and MSA.

Purpose Studies conducted on association between diet and cataract, found conflicting results. This paper aims to investigate the association between healthy eating index (HEI) and serum antioxidant and oxidant indices in patients with different degrees of cataract compared to the healthy subjects. Design/methodology/approach Ninety volunteers (aged > 50 years) were divided into the cataract (n = 45) and healthy control (n = 45) groups in this case-control study. Anthropometric variables, HEI score, serum total oxidant capacity (TOC) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), blood pressure, physical activity and stress measurements were done for all participants. Findings There was a significant difference in stress level between subgroup of first-degree cataract and healthy controls (16.6 ± 2.3 vs 42.5 ± 29.0, p < 0.001) as well as third-degree cataract (16.6 ± 2.3 vs 75.2 ± 22.6, p < 0.001). Serum TAC was significantly higher in healthy people compared to the first-degree (1.2 ± 0.2 vs 1 ± 0.2, p = 0.002) and third-degree cataract patients (1.2 ± 0.2 vs 1.0 ± 0.2, p = 0.013). Also, serum TOC was significantly lower in healthy controls compared to the first-degree (8.2 ± 1.1 vs 9.2 ± 1.0, p = 0.006) and third-degree cataract patients (8.2 ± 1.1 vs 9.1 ± 1.2, p = 0.015). There was a significant direct correlation between moderation (r = 0.61, p = 0.019) and total score of HEI (r = 0.57, p = 0.031) with serum TAC only in the first-degree cataract patients. Also there was a significant negative correlation between moderation score of HEI with serum TOC in the first-degree cataract patients (r = −0.60, p = 0.025), and there was a significant negative correlation between moderation (r = −0.36, p = 0.017) and total score (r=−0.35, p = 0.021) of HEI and TOC in the total cataract patients. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study on the assessment of the relationship between components of HEI and serum antioxidant indicators in different types of cataract compared to healthy individuals. It could be a start point for more detailed and large-scaled studies, even intervention studies, in this field.

Food insecurity is a major and multidimensional global problem, particularly in rural and vulnerable areas. In this cross-sectional study, we aimed to identify the relationship between social support and food insecurity in 404 Iranian rural households. We selected the sample by cluster random sampling and collected data using three questionnaires [demographic, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale (MSPSS), and United States Department of Agriculture food security questionnaires] and analyzed data using chi-square tests and logistic regression (using SPSS version 19.0). Of the 404 Iranian households, 168 (41.6%) were classified as food secure. The logistic regression analysis revealed that education and job status of the household heads and household income were significantly associated with food security status. Additionally, perceived social support was protective against food insecurity after adjusting for confounding factors [compared with the first quartile, second quartile odds ratio (OR)=1.76, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.94∼3.3 and fourth quartile OR=2.21, 95% CI: 1.13∼4.33]. This study indicated that social support contributes to a reduced chance of food insecurity in rural households. These results suggest that policy makers should focus on strengthening social support in vulnerable communities to help protect against hunger and poverty.

Due to the digestible refractory and absorbable structures of bioactive peptides (BPs), they could induce notable biological impacts on the living organism. In this regard, the current study was devoted to providing an overview regarding the available methods for BPs generation by the aid of a systematic review conducted on the published articles up to April 2019. In this context, the PubMed and Scopus databases were screened to retrieve the related publications. According to the results, although the characterization of BPs mainly has been performed using enzymatic and microbial in-vitro methods, they cannot be considered as suitable techniques for further stimulation of digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, new approaches for both in-vivo and in-silico methods for BPs identification should be developed to overcome the obstacles that belonged to the current methods. The purpose of this review was to compile the recent analytical methods applied for studying various aspects of food-derived biopeptides, and emphasizing generation at in vitro, in vivo, and in silico.

Background Over the last decade, many researchers tried to evaluate the effects of collagen supplements on skin aging and surprisingly revealed that the interventions improved skin aging parameters without any inconsistency. Aim This systematic review assesses the literature regarding the effects of collagen supplements on skin health parameters in healthy and patient subjects, focusing on mechanisms of action. Methods At the first step of search in the databases, 9057 items were obtained. After removal of duplicate items, 6531 publications remained. Further screening by title and/or abstract resulted in removal of 6500 items. Finally, full texts of the 31 remained items were assessed for eligibility and 10 publications were included in this review. Results The evidences obtained from these systematic reviews indicated that oral administration of intact or hydrolyzed collagen improves clinical manifestation of skin health. Almost all of the included studies reported the beneficial effects of collagen supplementation, and no inconsistencies have been seen in this regard between studies. Conclusions In this systematic review, three different mechanisms of action were clarified for the intervention. Direct effects of collagen peptides on fibroblasts, M2-like macrophages, and oral tolerance-related mechanisms are the possible mechanisms for the beneficial effects of collagen supplementation.

Bioactive peptides (BPs) content of dairy products is suggested to be a significant ingredient for reducing breast cancer (BC) risk. There is no observational study regarding the correlation between BPs and the risk of chronic disease because BPs' content of food items has not been evaluated in any study. This study assessed the bioactive peptides content of milk from different species, including humans, camel, bovine, buffalo, donkey, sheep, goat, and horse. The highest and lowest concentrations of total digestion-resistant peptides were estimated in sheep and human milk. Donkey milk casein contains a higher angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory, dipeptidyl peptidase III (DPP-III) inhibitory, DPP-IV inhibitory, and antioxidant peptides. On the other hand, camel whey protein contains the highest ACE-inhibitory peptides. To discover BPs with immunomodulatory and cholesterol-lowering functions, goat milk casein and sheep milk whey protein can be considered, respectively.

Bioactive peptides are digestion-resistant and absorbable peptides released from dietary parent proteins. Dietary epitopes exert their effects on the body without absorption and release from parent protein. In this study, the epitope content of milk proteins was discovered, and a new definition for BPs is provided alongside the classic definition. In this study, LBtope, ABCpred, and SVMTriP servers were used to find Linear B cell epitopes. Besides, to predict T cell epitopes, the major histocompatibility complex I (MHC-I) and MHC-II alleles that were more abundant among Iranian people were first found from the Allele Frequency Net Database (AFND). Consequently, the IEDB, RANKPEP, SYFPEITHI, EpiJen, and EpiTOP3 servers were used for MHC binding epitopes. In the current study, MHC-II, MHC-I, and B-cell epitopes of milk proteins were discovered. The most important B-cell epitopes discovered by LBtope, ABCpred, and SVMtrip databases for αS1-casein included APSFSDIPNPIGSEN (176-190), AESISSSEEIVPNSVE (62-77), and VFGKEKVNELSKDIGS (31-46). The high rank of αS1-casein derived from MHC-II epitopes and discovered from the SYFPEITHI database included KEKVNELSKDIGSES (34-48), RFFVAPFPEVFGKEK (22-36), and PELFRQFYQLDAYPS (147-161). The epitopes of dietary proteins and endogenous proteins could be considered as BPs. Epitopes exert their biological effects without absorption and release from parent proteins.

Introduction Although the relationship between personality traits and sexual self‐efficacy has received theoretical and empirical support, there is little information on how personality affects the sexual self‐efficacy of diabetic women. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of marital satisfaction and sexual function in the relationship between personality traits and sexual self‐efficacy in diabetic women. Methods Using a two‐stage sampling method, 410 reproductive‐aged Iranian women with type 2 diabetes were recruited in this descriptive‐analytical study. The participants completed self‐administered questionnaires, including the Vaziri Sexual Self‐Efficacy Questionnaire, the Female Sexual Function Index, ENRICH Marital Satisfaction Scale, and the Goldberg's Big Five Questionnaire. To analyze the data, structural equation modeling was employed in Amos software version 24. Results Results indicated an acceptable fit of the model to the data. Personality trait of openness to experience was associated with sexual self‐efficacy directly (β = .02, p = .030) and indirectly through the mediators of marital satisfaction (β = .06, p = .009) and sexual function (β = .18, p = .014). Furthermore, sexual function was associated with sexual self‐efficacy directly (β = .50, p = .025) and indirectly through the mediator of marital satisfaction (β = .36, p = .012). Conclusion Due to the mediating role of marital satisfaction and sexual function, this study has some practical implications for improving the sexual self‐efficacy of diabetic women with different personality traits., The relationship between personality traits and sexual self‐efficacy has received theoretical and empirical support, although there is little information on how personality affects the sexual self‐efficacy of diabetic women.

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been introduced as a major public health problem. It has been suggested that disruption in function or some adipokines and serum proteins' signaling could play crucial roles in lung diseases. This study's purpose was to investigate the association between serum levels of S100A1, ZAG, and adiponectin with FEV1 in COPD patients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 90 clinically stable outpatient males with age ranging from 40 to 70 years with COPD diagnosis - FEV1/FVC Results In the present study, lower FEV1 was significantly associated with increased risk of cachexia (OR = 5.76, 95% CI: 2.28-14.54). The serum level of ZAG was significantly higher in the mild-moderate COPD patients in comparison with the severe-very severe COPD patients (p 0.800, p Conclusion In the present study, we found that low FEV1 was associated with increased risk of cachexia in COPD patients. Additionally, lower serum level of ZAG and higher RMR were observed in patients with severe-very severe COPD as compared to mild-moderate COPD. Therefore, it could be claimed that there is a mechanistic chain of causality between FEV1, serum ZAG, RMR, and cachexia.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the hepatic manifestation of insulin resistance, is the most common cause of chronic liver. The present study aimed to investigate the roles of vaspin and omentin-1 in the NAFLD-related pathology including IR, inflammation and elevated blood pressure.This cross-sectional study was conducted among 83 NAFLD patients in Jahrom, Iran. Plasma levels of omentin-1, vaspin, hs-CRP and IL-6 were measured. Anthropometric indices, lipid profiles, liver enzymes as well as abdominal ultrasonography were assessed.Partial correlations controlling for age and sex showed significant positive correlation between vaspin and fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, HOMA-IR, and hs-CRP. It has been observed that omentin negatively correlated with glucose levels. Moreover, a marginally significant association has been found between omentin levels and systolic blood pressure (SBP).This study shows that vaspin and omentin-1 are associated with inflammation, insulin resistance and serum glucose levels in patients with NAFLD.Oboljenje ne-alkoholna masna jetra (NAFLD) je posledica promene na jetri usled insulinske rezistencije je najčešći uzrok hroničnog oboljenja jetre. Ovaj rad ima za cilj ispitivanje uloge vaspina i ometina-1 u NAFLD-patologiji, inflamaciji i povećanom krvnom pritisku.Ispitivanja su izvedena na 83 NAFLD pacijenta u Jahrom-u, Iran. Mereni su nivoi ometina-1, vaspina, hs-CRP i IL-6. Ispitivani su antropometrijski parametri, profil lipida, jetreni enzimi i abdominalna ultrasonografija.Delimičnom korelacijom između pola i starosti ukazala su na pozitivnu korelaciju između vaspina i nivoa glukoze u krvi (FBS), insulina, HOMA-IR i hs-CRP. Nađeno je da je ometin u negativnoj korelaciji sa nivoima glukoze. Međutim, marginalno značajna veza je nađena između nivoa ometina i sistolnog krvnog pritiska (SBP).Rezultati su pokazali da vaspin i ometion-1 su praćeni inflamacijom, insulinskom rezistencijom u nivoima glukoze u serumu kod pacijenata sa NAFLD.

We aimed to investigate the association between polymorphism of DRD2/ANKK1 gene with MetS and its components. Women (n = 531, aged 19–50 years) from the North-west of Iran were included by cluster sampling method. Polymorphisms of ANKK1 and DRD2 genes were defined in the study population. D/D (OR: 3.16; 95%CI: 1.31−7.60) and I/D (OR: 1.76; 95%CI: 1.12−2.78) genotypes of DRD2 (rs1799732) increased risk of MetS compared to I/I genotype. The D/D genotype of DRD2 (rs1799732) increased odds of hypertriglyceridemia in the study population. T/T (OR: 6.72; 95%CI: 1.99−22.71) and C/T (OR: 4.42; 95%CI: 2.79−7.01) genotypes of ANKK1 (rs1800497) increased risk of MetS compared to C/C genotype. Also, C/T genotype increased the odds of HTN, high FBS, high TG and low HDL-C levels compared to C/C genotype. These polymorphisms can affect the MetS components via their relation to the signaling of dopaminergic pathways and eating behaviors.

Objectives. Although several clinical trials have revealed the beneficial effects of honey on metabolic profiles, the results are conflicting. The aim of this study was to systematically summarize the effects of oral consumption of honey on key metabolic profiles in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and nondiabetic individuals. Methods. In total, four electronic databases, including PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane library, were searched from 2000 to 31 July 2019 to identify all English language studies that would meet the eligibility criteria. Clinical trials which have examined the effects of oral consumption of any types of honey on anthropometric indices, glycemic status, lipid profiles, and blood pressure in both diabetic and nondiabetic adult subjects were included in the study. Results. Of the 7769 possible relevant studies (including 3547 duplicates) identified in the initial search, finally, 13 clinical trials were included in the systematic review. All studies except three had a parallel design. Of 13 studies, 8 trials did not have placebo/control groups. The included studies examined the impact of oral consumption of honey on glycemic status (n = 12), anthropometric indices (n = 6), lipid profiles (n = 10), and blood pressure (n = 3). Based on the Jadad scale, 5 studies had acceptable methodological quality, and the remaining (n = 8) had low methodological quality. Conclusion. The current systematic review showed that oral consumption of honey might have no significant effects on the modulation of metabolic profiles in nondiabetic subjects. In addition, a high intake of honey might increase glucose levels and worsen other metabolic parameters in patients with T2DM. Due to substantial heterogeneity in study design and limited clinical trials, results, however, should be interpreted with great caution.

Among the gastrointestinal tract cancers, the risk of colon cancer is strongly dependent on dietary factors. For the first time in the current review, all the original case-control studies, associated with the correlation between total dietary diversity score and colon cancer risk, were evaluated. In this regard, three databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Sciences, were investigated to retrieve the related citations from 1990 until 2019. Among the included citations, three studies were finally included. In these included studies, the dietary diversity score was evaluated with 129-item and 800-item FFQs. Findings reveal that total dietary diversity can increase the risk of colon cancer in men, but not women; while, one study using 57-item FFQ reported the beneficial association of total dietary diversity with colon cancer among men. Significant demand for conducting more research to investigate the real mechanistic effects of dietary diversity on the risk of colon cancer development was demonstrated due to the inconsistent, questionable, and incomplete findings associated with the included studies.

This systematic review assesses the literature regarding beneficial and potential detrimental effects of bioactive peptides (BPs), focusing on evidence of regulatory T cells (T-regs) mediated oral tolerance (OT), collagen hydrolysate (CH) supplementation in osteoarthritis (OA) and the association of T-regs with chronic disease. The systematic search was done for articles published from inception to April 2019 using the PubMed and Scopus databases. About 3081 papers were identified by three different search strategies and screened against inclusion criteria which resulted in the inclusion of 22 articles. From the included articles, 12 papers were related to treatment of different disease in vivo by oral administration of BPs, six articles evaluated the effects of CH supplementation, as a rich source of BPs, on OA pain-relief and four observational studies assessed the association of circulating T-regs and risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The evidence obtained from first search strategy, indicated that oral administration of BPs improve clinical manifestations of animal models of allergy, arthritis, atherosclerosis, ulcerative colitis and allograft rejection by T-regs expansion; while, observational studies showed that although higher levels of circulating T-regs reduced risk of CVD and allergy, but, increased risk of solid cancers.

We aimed to evaluate the effect of dried Ziziphus vulgaris [Z. vulgaris] consumption on liver enzymes, blood pressure, inflammatory status, glycemic control, and lipid concentrations in type 2 diabetes patients. Seventy-six diabetic participants (aged 20-65 years) randomly assigned to intervention (n = 38) and placebo (n = 38) groups. The intervention group received 30 g/day dried Z. vulgaris for 12 weeks. At the end of the study, there was a significant reduction in the percentage change of weight, body mass index [BMI], insulin, homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance [HOMA-IR], Apoprotein B100 [ApoB100], and high-sensitive c-reactive protein [hs-CRP] in the intervention group compared to the controls. Also, increased values of quantitative insulin check index [QUICKI] and Apoprotein A-I [ApoA-I] in Z. vulgaris group compared to the controls were observed. In conclusion, consumption of dried Z. vulgaris fruit could have beneficial effects on improving the glycemic control and reducing the cardiovascular risk factors in the diabetic patients. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: In the present study we found that consumption of 30 g/day dried Z. vulgaris fruit in patients with type 2 diabetes for 12 weeks has beneficial anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperglycemic, and anti-hyperlipidemic effects on type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM] patients compared to the control group. Thus, it seems reasonable to design a large-scale clinical trial to determine the potential adverse effects of higher doses of this fruit and identify the therapeutic doses for the complementary treatment in T2DM medication. The medication with this popular fruit as an ingredient could be easily accepted by diabetic patients and may reduce the dependency and dosage of some of the routine diabetes medications which often have some adverse side effects.

Objective We aimed to investigate the association between serum levels of ghrelin and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) with MetS and its components in premenopausal women. Methods 43 patients with MetS and 43 healthy controls participated in this study. Participants' body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) were measured. Serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C and HDL-C), fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, BDNF and ghrelin determined. Homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance index (HOMA-IR) was also calculated. Results Participants in MetS group had higher waist-to-hip ratios, elevated SBP and DBP, and higher serum levels of TG, FBS and insulin when compared with the control group. Serum ghrelin and BDNF levels were significantly lower in participants with MetS than in the healthier control subjects. There was a strong, positive correlation between serum ghrelin and BDNF levels. Both proteins negatively correlated with TG, FBS, HOMA-IR and positively with HDL-C. Furthermore, serum BDNF levels negatively associated with insulin levels. Conclusions The findings indicate that variations occur in the circulating level of ghrelin and BDNF proteins in MetS patients. A strong correlation between serum ghrelin and BDNF suggests that production, release or practice of these 2 proteins might be related mechanically.

PURPOSE: Childhood overweight/ obesity is one of critical public health concern. It has been suggested that there is a link between breakfast skipping and obesity. However, results are conflicting. The aim of the present study was to summarize the association between breakfast skipping and overweight/obesity in children and adolescent. METHODS: We performed a literature search using Pubmed/Medline, Scopus, Web of Science and EMBASE electronic databases from 2000 through 28 February 2018 without language limitation. Observational studies in which risk measures were reported regarding the link between breakfast skipping and obesity in children and adolescent were included. Studies with at least the score of 5 from Newcastle-Ottawa Scale were considered as low risk of bias. Random effect model was used for data synthesis. RESULTS: Of 3276 publications, finally 16 studies (14 cross-sectional studies, 2 cohort studies) were included for meta-analysis. Based on cross-sectional studies, we found a positive association between breakfast skipping and obesity (Odd ratio (OR) (trim & fill): 1.43; 95%CI: 1.32, 1.54), while cohort studies showed no significant link (OR:1.01, 95%CI: 0.93, 1.11; I2: 48%, p = 0.14). Subgroup analysis in cross-sectional studies showed that the association between breakfast skipping and the risk of obesity in boys was OR: 1.64; 95% CI: 1.38, 1.95; I(2): 38.3%, p = 0.18, while it was 1.56 (95% CI: 1.38, 1.77, I(2): 0.0%, p = 0.49) in girls. CONCLUSION: The risk of obesity in children and adolescents who skipped breakfast was 43% greater than those who ate breakfast regularly in cross-sectional studies, while no significant link was found in cohort studies. However, due to high heterogeneity and limited cohort studies, findings should be interpreted by caution.

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been introduced as a major public health problem. It has been suggested that disruption in function or some adipokines and serum proteins' signaling could play crucial roles in lung diseases. This study's purpose was to investigate the association between serum levels of S100A1, ZAG, and adiponectin with FEV1 in COPD patients. Methods In this cross-sectional study, 90 clinically stable outpatient males with age ranging from 40 to 70 years with COPD diagnosis – FEV1/FVC < 70% – were divided into two groups: mild–moderate COPD patients; FEV1 ≥ 50 (n=52) VS severe and very severe COPD patients; FEV1 < 50 (n=38). The serum levels of ZAG, S100A1, and adiponectin were measured by the use of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results In the present study, lower FEV1 was significantly associated with increased risk of cachexia (OR = 5.76, 95% CI: 2.28–14.54). Background: Cataract is a chronic disorder that is related to antioxidant–oxidant imbalance situation. We aimed to investigate the association between food diversity and serum antioxidant and oxidant indices in cataract patients compared to healthy subjects. Materials and Methods: In this case–control study, ninety volunteers (aged > 50 years) were divided into the cataract (n = 45) and healthy control (n = 45) groups. Anthropometric variables, physical activity and stress levels, food diversity score, serum total oxidant capacity (TOC), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) measurements were done for all participants. Results: Serum TAC, even after adjustment for stress level, was significantly higher in healthy people compared to cataract patients (P < 0.001). In addition, serum TOC was significantly lower in healthy controls compared to cataract patients (P < 0.002). In healthy group, there was a weak significant positive association between serum TAC and meats group diversity (r = 0.149, P = 0.047). In addition, there was a moderate negative association between meats group diversity and TOC in the healthy controls (r = −0.712, P = 0.041). In the cataract group, there was a significant negative association between serum TOC and diversity score of fruits (r = −0.811, P = 0.017) and meats group (r = −0.926, P = 0.046) as well as total score of food diversity (r = −0.466, P = 0.003). Conclusion: It seems that increase in total dietary diversity and food groups' diversity can have a beneficial effect on oxidant situation among cataract patients.

The purpose of this study is to estimate the concentration of digestion-resistant and bioactive peptides in dairy products using an in silico method. The major contributors of milk protein sequences including αs1-casein, αs2-casein, β-casein, k-casein, β-lactoglobulin, and α-lactalbumin were obtained from UniProt Knowledgebase (UniProtKB). In silico digestion and bioactive fragment, findings were analyzed using the BIOPEP tool. Bioactive peptide content of the dairy products was estimated based on molecular weight, percent of major proteins existing in the food items, and the number of peptides obtained after in silico digestion from each protein. The results showed that 100 g milk contains 6700.241 μmol digestion-resistant peptides; in which 1880.434 μmol out of total peptides have anti-diabetic properties. Of all digestion-resistant peptides, 1978.24, 1955.024, 1700.907, and 1066.07 μmol belong to very low, low, medium, and high bioactivity sub-groups, respectively. Using the data introduced here, risk assessment could be done for dairy originated bioactive peptides and chronic disease.

Background: Dietary total antioxidant capacity (DTAC) has been proposed as a tool for assessing the intake of antioxidants. This study aimed to assess whether a relationship exists between dietary total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the odds of NAFLD. Study design: A case-control study. Methods: In this age‐and sex‐matched case‐control study in 2019, patients with NAFLD and healthy controls were recruited from a hospital clinic. All participants completed a validated 168‐ item food frequency questionnaire, the results of which were subsequently used to generate dietary TAC. Due to the high rate of drug resistance among malignant melanoma cases, it seems necessary to introduce an efficient pharmaceutical approach to melanoma treatment. For this purpose, Curcumin (Cur) and Chrysin (Chr), two natural anti-cancers, were co-encapsulated in PLGA-PEG nanoparticles (NPs), characterized by DLS, FTIR and FE-SEM and investigated for their effects on MMPs, TIMPs and TERT genes expression in C57B16 mice bearing B16F10 melanoma tumours. The results showed that the expression of MMP-9, MMP-2 and TERT genes were significantly decreased in all treated groups compared to the control. This reduction had the highest amount in CurChr NPs group and then CurChr group for each three genes. Likewise, the expression of TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 genes was significantly increased in all treated groups, compared to the control. Combination groups showed the highest rise in expression of these two genes and the observed increase was greater in nano groups. Moreover, the highest melanoma tumour growth inhibition was detected for CurChr NPs, followed by CurChr = Cur NPs Cur Chr NP Chr. Overall, it is speculated that the nano-combination of Cur and Chr into polymeric NPs with a one-step fabricated co-delivery system may be a promising and convenient approach to improve their efficiency in melanoma cancer therapy.

Background: Oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of diabetes is of great prominence and that Carnosine is a natural antioxidant. Objectives: This study was aimed to investigate the effect of Carnosine supplementation on different oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Methods: In this randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, 54 patients with T2DM were employed from Tabriz Sheikhorraees polyclinic and Imam-Reza Hospital endocrine center, and assigned to either the intervention group (n = 27) to receive two capsules of Carnosine 500 mg each or the control group (n = 27) to take two capsules of crystalline microcellulose for 12 weeks. Serum levels of fasting blood sugar (FBS), malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC) and erythrocytes content of catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were assessed before and after the supplementation. Results: A total of 44 patients completed the study. Anthropometric indices and energy intake did not show a significant change in both studied groups. Improved catalase level and decreased serum levels of fasting blood sugar, malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl occurred in the carnosine group compared to the placebo group after adjusting for baseline values and confounders (P < 0.05). Between-group differences were not significant for other variables at the end of the research. In the placebo group, none of the studied biomarkers were altered significantly. Conclusions: Our findings divulge the beneficial effects of carnosine supplementation in improving the antioxidant status and attenuating some of the oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with T2DM making it a useful adjunct therapy.

Objective/background Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a major public health problem worldwide. This is especially true in Northern Iran, which has high TB prevalence. The chronic nature of this disease is further exacerbated if it is accompanied by fungal infection, which usually remains undiagnosed and thus untreated. Thus, mycotic infections add fatal dimensions to pulmonary TB. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of invasive forms of fungal elements in sputum samples collected from patients with pulmonary TB at a reference laboratory in Ghaemshahr, Northern Iran, during the past 10 years. Methods In this retrospective study, sputum samples collected from 430 patients were examined. Pulmonary TB in patients was confirmed in our laboratory, and samples obtained during the period from March 2006 to February 2016 were analyzed. The sputum samples were subjected to biological (bacterial) staining (Ziehl–Neelsen and fluorochrome) and mycological investigation using KOH+ Calcofluor White (Sigma-Aldrich, India) by fluorescent microscopy and fungal culture on Sabouraud dextrose agar (Sigma-Aldrich, India) and CHROMagar (Paris, France). Results Invasive forms of fungal pathogens were observed as co-infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in 28/430 cases (6.51%). The frequency of Aspergillus, both branching and dichotomous infection, accounted for 3.72% (16/430): Aspergillus flavus, 1.63%; Aspergillus fumigatus, 1.16%; Aspergillus niger, 0.69%; and Aspergillus oryzae, 0.23%, respectively. Blastoconidia and pseudohyphae forms of yeast were observed as co-infection with M. tuberculosis in 2.79% (12/430) of the cases: Candida albicans, 1.86%; Candida krusei, 0.46%; and other Candida species, 0.46%, respectively. Conclusion Northern Iran is a critical region in the TB world and multidrug-resistant TB is a serious problem in this region. Although it is believed that there exists a commensal relationship between fungus and TB infections, the invasive forms of fungal pathogens and their co-infection can be caused by increasing disability and failure of treatment. Diagnosis of secondary or co-existing fungal infections in TB is most important for reducing the mortality and morbidity of these patients.
