In recent years several commentators have observed the trend of mainstream media ignoring and distorting women's perspectives and experiences in armed conflicts. Both in the reporting and the wider discourse about conflicts, women tend to be cast less as political actors and more as helpless victims, often paired with children in accounts of war incidents. Carolina Marques de Mesquita (2016), in her study of media coverage of recent wars and conflicts, observed that while major media outlets tend to represent the scale of violence in a conflict through the harm and death inflicted on women, they are otherwise often neglected. This contention sets the backdrop for our study that aims to explore the Russian-Ukraine War from a gendered lens. We examine the coverage of the ongoing conflict in four news outlets to see whether or not they reflect the established pattern of gendered representations of war. Our analysis reveals, by and large, persistence in the pattern of coverage of the war that corroborates the charge that media reportage of conflict tends to underrepresent women and distort their involvement in wars through narrow role characterizations. In Papua New Guinea (PNG), news media frequently report on events in which groups exchange gifts as compensation for alleged harms. In news narratives of this type, compensation is a metaphor for the contact between liberal and relational social orders. In this way, news media in PNG produce knowledge of what it means to be a citizen in a society defined by vast and profound diversity. Different versions of the basic formula for compensation stories offer different models for how liberal and relational orders should interact, one stressing the logic of reciprocal debt and interdependence and the other emphasizing the gift as a dematerialized symbol of commitment to civic order. Yet each variant implicates the other, and hence the status of the Indigenous subject as a citizen of a postcolonial nation remains fundamentally ambiguous. Stories of a new type of compensation in national newspapers reveal that PNG society and its media continue to work through the dilemmas of ethnographic citizenship in ever newer ways. The contemporary mediascape is populated as never before by scores of female athletes and women's sports teams. Because the mainstream media are notorious for their perpetuation of traditional gender roles, this raises interesting questions regarding how these women are represented in the media. Research employing Functional Theory has generated considerable data on the nature of political, and primarily presidential, campaign discourse. This study investigates the relationship of the topic of presidential campaign discourse--the proportion of utterances focusing on policy and character--and election outcome. Employing a large sample of multiple presidential message forms (television spots, debates, speeches) from presidential campaigns spanning 1948-2000, the study presents evidence that presidential candidates who discuss policy more frequently (and character less) than their opponents are more likely to win elections. It appears that many citizens primarily view the presidency as an institution that implements policy and vote accordingly. This finding, that discussion of policy issues is important to election outcome, has implications for candidates, scholars, and those who cover political campaigns.
