Marine invertebrates are a group of animals characterized by the absence of a backbone, living in the oceanic zone around the world, being remarkably common associated with rhodolith/maërl beds (non-geniculated red corallinaceous algae). A total of 59 species were identified, belonging to six phyla (Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Sipuncula, Mollusca, Arthropoda, and Echinodermata), of which 52 are considered here as new records. The annelids (Class Polychaeta) were the most representative taxa in Miramar and Seixas beaches, while molluscs were mostly found in Maceió Beach.This is the first study that include an identification guide, diagnostic features and distribution patterns worldwide and local (including new records) of the marine invertebrate fauna associated with rhodolith beds in Northeast Brazil (State of Paraíba). Sampling were performed in 2018, at low tide in the intertidal to shallow subtidal zones (1.5 and 4.0m depth), in the Miramar, Seixas and Maceió beaches. Of all the identified species, 18 are new records for the Seixas, and all identified species for Miramar and Maceió beaches are new occurrences. This work proposes to contribute to the knowledge of marine invertebrates in Northeast Brazil, providing support for future environmental studies.

This study presents new and relevant data on the geomorphology, geophysics and biota of the Seixas / PB reef environment, being one of the pioneers in this reef environment with this level of detail. Geological, geophysical and geochemical studies show the existence of compartments (beach, internal platform and reef), areas (sheltered, plateau and beat) and geomorphological features (channel, reef flat, crest reef, front reef, fore reef), indicating that the depositional processes of the seabed undergo oceanographic influence. It was not possible to find the base rock of support for the construction of the reef through three drillings with a maximum depth of 250 cm, the results of the petrographic slides, the X-ray diffractogram analyzed and the material collected in the dives realized in the external wall of the reef. reefs show that the Seixas reef is a recent coral-algal carbonate biogenic formation associated with the evolution of the coastline, with high coastal sedimentation and acting in conjunction with the sea level rise (Holocene Quaternary Period), supported in the marine abrasion terrace under the coastal plain shaped by the Paraíba Sedimentary Basin, more precisely in the Alhandra Sub-basin and is approximately 30 km from the Northeastern continental slope. Currently the reef has 1.18 km2 of consolidated area with a maximum height of 6 m. From a consolidated arenite base the settlement and settlement of benthic organisms occurred, going through succession processes continuously. A sample area of 225 m², with a sampling effort of 120 hours of underwater visual surveys (transects and photochromes), it was possible to map the macroalgal, coral and fish communities and verify that the depth and granulometry variables influence the structuring of the communities. In a cover dominated by macroalgae (68.99%), corals, hydrocoral and zoanthids (7.62%), calcareous structures - rhodolites (9.73%), unbound sediment (11.89%) and consolidated sediment (277 individuals), Pomacentridae (248 individuals), Acanthuridae (108 individuals), and in a smaller number of individuals, the Epinephelidae families were represented by Haemulidae (696 individuals), Labridae-Scarinae (272 individuals) , Mullidae, Sciaenidae, Holocentridae and Gobiidae. As a general analysis, the relation between the Sheltered and Plateau areas and between the Beat and Plateau areas, points to the Plateau area as an ecotone environment. At the level of endemism, four coral families of the order Scleractinia and eight species of ichthyofauna are endemic to the South Atlantic Biogeographic Province, corroborating with the general characterization of this province (low diversity with a high degree of endemism, surviving in murky waters). Through workshops and concept maps built by local users, it was found that the group of fishermen are the ones who know the environment better, either because of the need for navigation (rock formation) and fishing (places with greater supply, being the hydrocoral "fire-coral" best known due to the associated fauna). The junction of scientific knowledge correlated with the biogeographic context and acquired local knowledge resulted in the application of three environmental practices (unraveling the marine creatures, ecological trail and underwater route) involving the local community according to the premises of citizen science. The marine biogeographic context attributed to the practices for the Seixas microcosm reef was based on the historical and ecological processes of how this geological environment arose and where the biological communities came from, demonstrating the connectivities in a local to global present day vision. Fundação de Apoio à Pesquisa do Estado da Paraíba - FAPESQ Este estudo apresentou dados novos e relevantes sobre a geomorfologia, geofísica e biota do ambiente recifal do Seixas/PB, sendo um dos pioneiros nesse ambiente recifal com esse nível de detalhamento. Os estudos geológicos, geofísicos e geoquímicos evidenciaram a existência de compartimentos (praia, plataforma interna e recife), áreas (abrigada, platô recifal e batida) e feições geomorfológicas (canal, planície recifal, crista, frente recifal, pós-recife), indicando que os processos deposicionais do fundo marinho sofreram influência oceanográfica. Não foi possível encontrar a rocha-base de sustentação para a edificação do recife através de três perfurações com profundidade máxima de 250 cm, os resultados das lâminas petrográficas, do difratograma de raios-X analisados e do material coletado nos mergulhos realizados na parede externa do recife demonstraram que o recife do Seixas é uma formação biogênica carbonática coral-algal recente - associada com a evolução da linha de costa, com a elevada sedimentação costeira e agindo em conjunto com a elevação do nível do mar (Período Quaternário Holocênico) -, apoiada no terraço marinho de abrasão sob a planície costeira moldada pela Bacia Sedimentar Paraíba, mais precisamente na Sub-bacia Alhandra e dista aproximadamente 30 km do talude continental nordestino. Atualmente, o recife possui 1,18 km2 de área consolidada com altura máxima de 6 m. A partir de uma base consolidada arenítica ocorreu o assentamento e povoamento de organismos bentônicos, passando por processos de sucessões continuamente. Perfazendo uma área amostral de 225 m², com esforço amostral de 120 h de pesquisas visuais subaquáticas (uso de transectos e fotoquadrados) foi possível mapear as comunidades macroalgais, coralíneas e íctica e verificar que as variáveis ambientais profundidade e granulometria exercem influência na estruturação das comunidades. Em uma cobertura dominada por macroalgas (68,99%), corais, hidrocorais e zoantídeos (7,62%), estruturas calcárias - rodolitos (9,73%), sedimento não-consolidado (11,89%) e sedimento consolidado (1,77%), foram identificados 1435 peixes recifais, representados pelas famílias Haemulidae (696 indivíduos), Labridae-Scarinae (272 indivíduos), Pomacentridae (248 indivíduos), Acanthuridae (108 indivíduos) e em menor número de indivíduos, as famílias Epinephelidae, Mullidae, Sciaenidae, Holocentridae e Gobiidae. Como análise geral, a relação entre as áreas Abrigada e Platô e entre as áreas Batida e Platô, aponta a área Platô como um ambiente de ecótono. A nível de endemismo, quatro famílias coralíneas da ordem Escleractinia e oito espécies da ictiofauna são endêmicas da Província Biogeográfica Atlântico Sul, corroborando com a caracterização geral desta província (baixa diversidade com alto grau de endemismo, sobrevivendo em águas turvas). Através de oficinas e mapas conceituais construídos pelos usuários locais, constatou-se que o grupo dos pescadores é o que mais conhece o ambiente, seja pela necessidade da navegação (formação rochosa) e da pesca (locais de maior oferta, maior número de indivíduos, sendo o hidrocoral “coral-de-fogo” o mais conhecido devido à fauna associada). A junção do conhecimento científico correlacionado com o contexto biogeográfico e saber local adquirido resultaram na aplicação de três práticas ambientais (desvendando as criaturas marinhas, trilha ecológica e rota subaquática) envolvendo a comunidade local conforme premissas da ciência cidadã. O contexto biogeográfico marinho atribuído às práticas para o microcosmo recifal do Seixas foi fundamentado pelos processos históricos e ecológicos de como surgiu este ambiente geológico e de onde vieram as comunidades biológicas, demonstrando as conectividades numa visão local até global dos dias atuais.

Numa boa prática de manutenção de mamíferos marinhos em condições artificiais é importante acompanhar cuidadosamente a alimentação e os seus efeitos na evolução do peso dos animais, em articulação com outras variáveis ambientais. Este trabalho consiste num estudo de alimentação com dez leões marinhos da espécie Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus (5 machos adultos, 2 fêmeas adultas e 3 machos juvenis) no parque oceanográfico Zoomarine (Albufeira, Portugal). Os objectivos foram a determinação dos valores calóricos das espécies de produtos da pesca usadas na alimentação destes animais e os seus efeitos na evolução do peso corporal em função da idade, peso e história comportamental. O estudo estendeu-se ao longo de quatro anos e tendo sido dividido em três fases. Na primeira, foi quantificado o valor calórico do alimento efectivamente tomado por cada indivíduo. Na segunda fase não houve controlo calórico, tendo apenas sido registado a quantidade total em quilos de alimento. Na terceira e última fases, fez-se um planeamento da alimentação dos animais baseado em valores calóricos. Além da alimentação tomada por cada sujeito foram registados diariamente as temperaturas do ar e da água e eventos comportamentais relevantes (tais como incidentes de agressão). Foram igualmente testados alguns métodos de medição dos tempos de passagem dos diferentes tipos de alimento no tubo digestivo de três machos adultos com a utilização de esferas radiopacas para visualização radiográfica. Em termos gerais, verificou-se que as espécies Scombrus japonicus, Trachurus trachurus e Sprattus sprattus apresentaram valores calóricos mais elevados, embora muito variáveis, enquanto as espécies Loligo vulgaris e Trisopterus minutus mostraram valores mais baixos mas mais estáveis. As espécies de maior valor calórico mostraram tempo de passagem mais elevado pelo tubo digestivo, com o máximo de 33 horas para a espécie Sprattus sprattus. As temperaturas da água e do ar mostraram uma relação previsível com as oscilações no peso dos animais, que mostraram uma relação inversa com às oscilações anuais da temperatura. O presente trabalho contribuiu para um melhor conhecimento do valor do conteúdo calórico dos diferentes produtos da pesca fornecidos aos leões-marinhos, conhecimento esse hoje utilizado pelo parque na planificação da alimentação dos seus mamíferos marinhos em geral. Fica igualmente demonstrada a relevância da planificação alimentar de acordo com os valores calóricos no que concerne aos cuidados e bem-estar dos animais exibidos. In a good practical maintenance of marine mammals in artificial conditions it is important to carefully control the feeding of the animals and its effects on the evolution of their weight, combined to other environmental variables. This research consists on the feeding study of ten fur seals (five adult males; two adult females and three juvenile males) of the species Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus at the oceanographic park Zoomarine (Albufeira - Portugal). The goals were to measure the values in calories of each fish species used for the feeding of those animals and their effects on body weight and behavior, in relation to their ages, weights and historical behavior. The study lasted four years and was divided in three periods. During the first period the caloric values of the food, effectively ingested by each animal were measured after the ingestion. During the second period there was no control of caloric values, only the total amount in kilogram of food intake has been registered. During the third and last period, the food intake of the animals was established based on a pre-determined caloric value. Besides the food taken by each animal, the air and water temperatures and relevant animal’s behaviors (such as aggressive incidents) were registered daily. A few measure methods - of the period of time each type of food had taken to go along the digestive tube - were also tested in three adult males. This has been done by using radioactive spheres for radiographic visualization. In general the species Scombrus japonicus, Trachurus trachurus and Sprattus sprattus presented higher caloric values even if very variable, while the species Loligo vulgaris and Trisopterus minutus showed lower and more stable values. The species of higher caloric values had the longest time of digestion with a maximum of thirty-three hours for the specie Sprattus sprattus. Water and air temperatures seemed to have an effect on the animal’s weight variation, which showed an inverse relation to the annual temperature varieties. However this variation could also be related to their own species seasonal physiological adaptation. This study allowed a better understanding of the importance of the different caloric values in the various species given to the fur seals. This knowledge is applied today at the park on food planning for its marine mammals in general. It has also shown the relevance of food planning according to the caloric values in relation with the husbandry and well-being of the exhibited animals.
