Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the differences in chewing efficiency among patients with different vertical skeletal types of Angle Class I and Angle Class II malocclusions, to provide reference for orthodontic clinical practice. Method and materials: Sample size estimation revealed a minimum of 53 for each class. Thus, a total of 108 patients with Angle Class I and Angle Class II malocclusions were selected. Lateral skull radiographs were taken, and head measurements were analyzed via geometric tracing software. Chewing efficiency was measured using the gravimetric method to compare between the two groups. The vertical skeletal pattern was classified via Steiner analysis. Results: Significant statistical differences in chewing efficiency were observed between patients presenting with Angle Class I and Angle Class II malocclusions (P<.05). Additionally, significant differences in chewing efficiency were observed among patients with different vertical skeletal patterns (P<.05). Furthermore, a statistically significant difference in chewing efficiency was found between men and women (P<.05). Conclusions: Patients with Angle Class I malocclusions exhibited significantly higher chewing efficiency compared to those with Angle Class II malocclusions. Among patients with different vertical facial types, the chewing efficiency followed theorderof low angle> normal angle> high angle. Moreover, men demonstrated a higher chewing efficiency than women. The present study assessed the impact of a fixed prosthetic rehabilitation on masticatory function in patients diagnosed with stage IV periodontitis. Eligible participants were adults in need of complex rehabilitation due to masticatory dysfunction. Masticatory function was evaluated using the two‐ colored chewing gum mixing ability test (VOH) at the diagnostic phase (T0), 1 week after delivery of the prosthetic prototype (T1), and 1 week after delivery of the final prosthetic solution (T2). Ten subjects were treated with a fixed prosthesis following periodontal and implant surgery using an individualized, fully digital workflow. Full-mouth plaque and bleeding scores, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level improved significantly. VOH was 0.472 ± 0.168 at T0, 0.358 ± 0.166 at T1, and 0.250 ± 0.123 at T2. A significant improvement in VOH was observed from T0 to T1 (difference: –0.114; 95% CI: –0.199 to –0.029; P = .014) and from T1 to T2 (difference: –0.108; 95% CI: –0.200 to –0.015; P = .027). From T0 to T2, VOH increased by 44.3%. Self-perceived assessment of masticatory function also improved from T0 to T2 (P = .002). The fixed prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with stage IV periodontitis allowed for a significant improvement in objective and subjective measurements of masticatory function. The management of horizontally fully edentulous atrophic ridges is a common problem in dental implantology. This case report describes an alternative modified two-stage presplitting technique. The patient was referred for an implantsupported rehabilitation of their edentulous mandible. CBCT scans showed a mean available bone width of about 3 mm. At the first stage, four linear corticotomies were performed using a piezoelectric surgical device. At the second surgical stage 4 weeks later, bone expansion was performed, and four implants were placed in the interforaminal area. The healing process was uneventful. No fractures of the buccal wall and no neurologic lesions were observed. Postoperative CBCT scans showed a mean bone width gain of about 3.7 mm. Implants were uncovered 6 months after the second surgery, and 1 month later, a fixed provisional screw-retained prosthesis was delivered. This approach could be used as a reconstructive technique that avoids using grafts and reduces treatment times, possible complications, postsurgical morbidity, and costs by exploiting the patient's native bone as much as possible. Oral epitheliolysis or mucosal shedding is an infrequently described phenomenon characterized by epithelial desquamation, revealing mucosa of normal color and texture underneath. The condition has a predilection for middle-aged females and primarily affects nonkeratinized oral tissues. Although some cases are idiopathic, certain oral hygiene products have been implicated as the culprit, and resolution of the condition documented with their discontinuation. Severity of desquamation and symptoms vary with frequency and duration of contact with the irritant and its concentration. A case is presented of a dramatic case of shedding oral mucosa in an elderly female, which appeared to be caused by habitual chewing of an aspirincontaining over-the-counter analgesic. Objectives: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have a relatively high prevalence among university students. This study aimed to identify independent risk factors for TMD in university students and develop an effective risk prediction model. Methods: This study included 1,122 university students from four universities in Changchun City, Jilin Province, as subjects. Predictive factors were screened by using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression and the machine learning Boruta algorithm in the training cohort. A multifactorial logistic regression analysis was used to construct a TMD risk prediction model. Internal validation of the model was conducted via bootstrap resampling, and an external validation cohort comprised 205 university students undergoing oral examinations at the Stomatological Hospital of Jilin University. Results: The prevalence of TMD among university students was 44.30%. Ten predictive factors were included in the model, comprising gender, facial cold stimulation, unilateral chewing, biting hard or resilient foods, clenching teeth, grinding teeth, excessive mouth opening, malocclusion, stress, and anxiety. The model demonstrated good predictive ability with area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of 0.853, 0.838, and 0.821 in the training cohort, internal validation cohort, and external validation cohort, respectively. The calibration curves demonstrated that the predicted results were consistent with the actual results, and the decision curve analysis (DCA) indicated the model's high clinical utility. Conclusions: An online nomogram of TMD in university students with good predictive performance was constructed, which can effectively predict the risk of TMD in university students. The model provides a useful tool for the early identification and treatment of TMDs in university students, helping clinicians to predict the probability of TMDs in each patient, thus providing more personalized and accurate treatment decisions for patients. Background: Prevotella bacteria are associated with inherent diseases of the oral cavity, such as periodontal disease, and systemic diseases. Oral frailty (OF) has been associated with nursing necessity and death. However, the relationship between OF and oral microbiota has not been fully clarified. Objective: This cross‐sectional study investigated the association between OF and Prevotella percentage in the oral microbiota of community‐dwelling older adults. Methods: Oral bacteria species from saliva were identified in 208 community‐dwelling older individuals aged ≥60 years in Japan. The proportion of Prevotella in the oral microbiota was classified into three tertile groups, and its relationship with each test item for OF (number of remaining teeth, masticatory performance, oral diadochokinesis, tongue pressure, difficulties eating tough foods, difficulties swallowing tea or soup, number of applicable OF judgement items, and existence of OF) was examined using ordinal logistic regression analysis. Results: The Prevotella proportions were classified into lower, middle and upper groups, comprising 70, 69 and 69 participants, respectively. The three groups showed a significant relationship between the number of remaining teeth (odds ratio [OR]: 0.946, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.915–0.977), masticatory performance (OR: 0.897, 95% CI: 0.844–0.953), number of applicable OF judgement items (OR: 1.477, 95% CI: 1.14–1.915), and existence of OF (OR: 4.194, 95% CI: 1.519–11.576). Conclusion: The proportion of Prevotella in oral microbiota was high in individuals with OF. Background: It remains unclear how the salivary flow and the fat content of food affect bolus formation during mastication. Objectives: We aimed to clarify: (1) how hyposalivation affects jaw‐closing and hyoid‐elevating muscle activities in bolus formation, and (2) if the effect of hyposalivation on muscle activity depends on the fat content of food. Methods: Eighteen healthy male volunteers were instructed to freely ingest four test foods: Plain, Fat without seasoning, Fat with seasoning, and Soft rice crackers. Masseter and suprahyoid electromyographic activities were recorded before and 30 min after the administration of atropine sulfate, a muscarinic receptor antagonist that induces hyposalivation. Results: Hyposalivation extended the masticatory duration significantly in all the test foods except Fat with seasoning. Masticatory cycle time was significantly longer with vs without hyposalivation for the Soft (p =.011). Suprahyoid activity/cycle was significantly greater with vs without hyposalivation (p =.013). Masticatory cycle time was significantly longer at the late stage with vs without hyposalivation for the Soft (p <.001). Suprahyoid activity/cycle was significantly greater at the middle (p =.045) and late stages (p =.002) with vs without hyposalivation for the Soft and greater at the late stage with vs without hyposalivation for the Plain (p =.043). Changes in masticatory cycle time and suprahyoid activity/cycle for these foods had significantly positive relationship (p <.001). Conclusion: Hyposalivation‐induced changes in masticatory behaviours resulted from the middle and late stage suprahyoid activity. Fat content and seasoning compensate for salivary flow inhibition. Background: The Test of Mastication and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) is a reliable tool for assessing chewing and swallowing in healthy adults, using commercially available crackers. TOMASS‐Children (TOMASS‐C) is the paediatric version of TOMASS. Objective: The present study aimed to establish normative data for TOMASS‐C using a validated regional commercial cracker among healthy individuals aged between 6–20 years of India. Methods: 327 healthy individuals between 6–20 years were recruited in a cross‐sectional study design following a convenient sampling procedure. Participants consumed one validated regional cracker and the procedure was video recorded. Data were stratified according to age groups (6–7, 8–9, 10–13, 14–17 and 18–20 years) and sex (boys and girls). Two Speech Language Pathologists independently analysed the video recordings to derive discrete bites, masticatory cycles, swallows and total swallow time indices. Using them, time/swallow, masticatory cycles/bite, swallows/bite and time/bite were calculated. Results: All parameters of TOMASS‐C had moderate to good (0.6–0.85) test–retest reliability and moderate to excellent (0.69–0.99) inter‐rater reliability at p >.000. Younger participants took more bites, chewed more times and swallowed more frequently with longer chewing and swallowing time. Boys exhibited a lower number of swallows, shorter swallow time and reduced total masticatory time at p >.05. Additionally, girls demonstrated fewer bites and chewing cycles compared to boys at p >.05. Conclusion: TOMASS‐C using a validated regional cracker was feasible and reliable. Normative data established for healthy boys and girls between 6–20 years offers much‐needed quantitative data to objectively delineate individuals with and without chewing and swallowing solid food difficulties. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a distinguishing feature of mammals, and in most mammals includes an articular disc that buffers the loads placed on it by mastication. The disc is well developed in mammals with significant lateral masticatory jaw movements but is absent in toothless mammals, including extant monotremes, although histological studies of developing monotremes have shown rudimentary discs that fail to mature. Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) grind their food between keratinous pads in the maxillae and lower jaws and are the only edentulate mammals that masticate their food. In this study, we characterize the anatomy of the TMJ of the adult platypus to see if we can reconcile the anatomy, including the absence of the articular disc, with the mandibular movements observed in video recordings. We studied the gross anatomy of the maxillofacial region and the microstructure using microcomputed tomography (micro‐CT) and histological examination. Platypuses had well‐developed masticatory muscles but lacked an articular disc between the mandibular condyle and glenoid fossa. The surface of the glenoid fossa was slightly concave than that of the condylar head was correspondingly slightly convex. The pre‐ and postglenoid processes were not well developed. Micro‐CT showed dense trabecular bone in the anterior part of the condyle, where the lateral pterygoid muscle attached. Histological analysis showed that the surfaces of the condyle and glenoid fossa consisted of dense, avascular and thickened fibrous connective tissue. In addition, well‐developed synovial folds were present. These anatomical characteristics are consistent with both anterior and lateral movements of the mandible, while the thick layer of connective tissue substitutes for a disc by absorbing the mechanical stresses associated with mastication. The failure of the disc primordium to develop cannot be attributed to a lack of muscle development, but the distribution of stresses in the toothless platypus jaw is likely to be different from those in a masticating eutherian. Plant–insect interactions can be complex and elusive. A new study shows that sap-feeding herbivores reduce tree emissions of specific volatile organic compounds that attract natural enemies. Background: The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare and evaluate the stress distribution of maxillary first premolar residual crowns restored with post-core crowns, endocrowns and inlay crowns after deep margin elevation, to explore the fitting restoration for residual crowns using finite element analysis. Methods: A healthy complete right maxillary first premolar from a male adult was scanned by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). The finite element model of the tooth was established by reverse engineering software such as Mimics, Geomagic and Hypermesh. On this basis, the residual crown model after deep margin elevation was made, and the experimental group models were divided into three groups, those restored with post core crowns, endocrowns and inlay crowns. Vertical and oblique static loads were applied to the experimental models to simulate the force on the tooth during mastication (the loading position was located in the central fossa of the occipital surface, and the load was 100 N) using Abaqus software. Results: The peak value and distribution of von Mises stress in each part of the experimental model were observed. After deep margin elevation, the peak dentin von Mises stresses were lower than the tensile strength of normal dentin in the post-core crown, endocrown, and inlay crown groups; the lowest stress results were found in the post-core crown group for the dentin, restoration, enamel, and deep margin elevation (DME) layers under vertical and oblique loading. In terms of stress distribution clouds, the peak stresses in the dentin tissue were located in the apical 1/3 of the root after postcore crown restorations for both loads, while stress concentrations were evident in the cervical and root areas after endocrown and inlay crown restorations; regardless of the load and restoration method, the corresponding stress concentration areas appeared at the junction of the DME and dentin tissue at the loading site of the restorations; Conclusions: Post-core crowns, endocrowns and inlay crowns can be used to restore residual crowns after deep margin elevation, and post-core crowns can better protect the residual tooth tissue. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a serious public health problem in various Asian countries, including Sri Lanka, and a combination of cultural practices, lifestyle factors, and genetic predispositions influences the incidence of these cancers. The examination of the connection between exposure to heavy metals and the probability of developing oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and OSCC has been limited in its scope, and the overall consequences of such exposure remain largely unknown. This study aims to clarify the link between serum levels of heavy metals and the risk of OSCC and OPMD. The concentrations of seven heavy metals—namely, arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn)—were analyzed in serum samples from 60 cases and 15 controls in the Sri Lankan cohort. The Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) was used for the analysis. Subsequently, the data underwent statistical evaluation via the Kruskal–Wallis H test, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28 software, with a confidence interval set at 95%. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The cohort consisted of 48 men and 27 women, with 15 patients each diagnosed with OSCC, OSF, OLK, and OLP, and 15 healthy controls. The study used the Kruskal–Wallis Test to compare metal concentrations across groups, finding significant differences for all metals except As and Pb. Significant associations were observed between age, past medical history, drug history, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel chewing. The Spearman Correlation test showed significant correlations between the concentrations of Cr, Co, Cu, As, and Zn and the presence of cancer/precancer conditions. The study's findings suggest that heavy metal contamination may be linked to the development of OSCC and precancerous conditions. When comparing OSCC and OPMD cases with controls, the serum concentrations of As and Pb did not differ significantly. However, Cd, Cr, Co, Cu, and Zn exhibited significantly higher concentrations among cases compared to controls (p < 0.05). This study observed significant variations in the levels of these five heavy metals among cancerous (OSCC), premalignant (OPMD), and healthy tissues, suggesting a potential role in the progression of malignancies. Background Objective Methods Results Conclusions The literature is unclear about how the different attachment systems for overdentures impact the maximum bite force, the masticatory efficiency and how this impact in the oral health self‐perception in patients.To evaluate the effect of two attachment systems (O‐ring and Locator) for mandibular overdenture using single implant on quality of life, maximum bite force (BF) and masticatory efficiency (ME).Twenty‐eight completely edentulous denture wearers with a mandibular symphysis implant were randomly selected and allocated into two groups in a crossover study, considering O‐ring and Locator attachment types. The quality of life and self‐perception of oral health were assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP‐Edent) and Geriatric Index of Determination of Oral Health (GOHAI) questionnaires, respectively. BF was measured using a gnathodynamometer and ME by chewing silicone cubes and almonds in different numbers of cycles.There was no difference between the attachment systems about self‐perceived oral health and impact on quality of life (p > .05). The O‐ring‐type system obtained a significantly higher BF than the locator‐type system (p = .04). Regardless of the food chewed, no statistically significant difference was observed with the type of attachment (p > .05). The ME was directly proportional to the masticatory cycles only for almonds (p < .01).Locator and O‐ring inserts had a similar impact on patients' quality of life, self‐perception of oral health and ME. Background: To study and compare the effects of clear aligners without brackets and traditional fixed aligners in orthodontic treatment. Methods: The samples were collected from January 2022 to April 2023. The control group (n = 26) received orthodontic treatment using traditional fixed appliances. The research group (n = 20) received orthodontic treatment using the clear aligners without brackets. Compare the therapeutic effects and related evaluation indicators between two groups. Results: The total effective ratio was compared between the 2 groups, and the study group was greater(P < 0.05). After treatment, the detected values of the periodontal condition indicators (plaque index, debris index, and gingival bleeding index), serum inflammatory factors (CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α) of the two groups, were less than before, also were all less than the control group. (P < 0.05). After therapy, in comparison of the control group, the value of mastication efficiency, comfort and psychological evaluation, sleep indicators and the points of the four dimensions of life quality in the study group was greater, and the detection results were obviously greater than before(P < 0.05). Conclusion: In the orthodontic therapy of sufferers with malocclusion, compared with the traditional fixed appliance, the clear aligners without brackets can enhance the treatment effects, improve the periodontal condition and masticatory function, and reduce the inflammatory responses, so that patients can feel more comfortable, thereby improving their psychology, sleep and quality of life. In the future, with the continual advancement of technology and people's pursuit of beauty, the application of clear aligners without brackets in orthodontic treatment will become more and more extensive. The continuous introduction of new materials and new technologies will further improve the effects and comfort of the clear aligners without brackets, reduce treatment time and discomfort, and also reduce patients' resistance to aligners, bringing patients a better treatment experience. Introduction: Little is known about the fetal and pregnancy effects of khat chewing during pregnancy. The aim of the current study was to determine the impact of chewing khat during pregnancy on selected pregnancy outcomes in Ethiopia, 2022: A Cohort Study with a Generalized Structural Equation Modeling Analysis Approach. Methods: An institution-based prospective cohort study was employed in selected hospitals in eastern Ethiopia. Pregnant women who visited the selected hospitals in the study area during the study period that fulfilled the eligibility criteria were included until a sample size (344) was fulfilled. The main outcomes studied in the present study were preterm birth and low birth weight. Data were collected through anthropometric and clinical measurements, and interviewers administered questionnaires. The survival analysis and generalized linear model analysis were performed to estimate the crude and adjusted relative risk and attributable risk. The Generalized Structural Equation Modeling (GSEM) analysis was performed using the Statistical software for data science (Stata) 'GSEM' command to examine the mediation effect. Results: The risk of occurrence of preterm birth was significantly higher among khat chewers [adjusted relative risk (aRR) = 2.19; 95%CI 1.21–3.96]. In further analysis after adjusting for gestational hypertension and cesarean delivery, the regression coefficient of khat chewing during pregnancy on preterm birth has been decreased in size from path n, β = 0.37, p<0.001 to path n', β = 0.15, p<0.005. The risk of occurrence of low birth weight among khat chewers was significantly higher (aRR = 4.17; 95%CI 2.11–8.25). In further analysis after adjusting for gestational hypertension, cesarean delivery, preterm birth and maternal anemia, the regression coefficient of khat chewing during pregnancy on low birth weight has been decreased in size from path q, β = 0.4, p<0.001 to path q', β = 0.2, p<0.001. Conclusion: Overall, the present study revealed that khat chewing is not only a worry of the current population but also a public health concern of the generation affecting unborn fetuses. Purpose Methods Results Conclusions To investigate the influence of different denture‐bearing conditions on the masticatory function and patient‐reported outcome measures (PROMs) of complete denture wearers.Sixty edentulous patients were selected and allocated into two groups according to the American College of Prosthodontics' (ACP) classification: non‐atrophic (NAT) (Classes I and II) (n = 24) and atrophic (AT) (Classes III and IV) (n = 36). All patients received new complete dentures (CDs). The objective variables (masticatory performance and swallowing threshold) were assessed as well as the PROMs (oral health‐related quality of life (OHIP‐EDENT), patient satisfaction) and quality of the prosthesis, at baseline (using the old CD) and after 4 months new prostheses use. Data were analyzed by Mann–Whitney test followed by the Generalized Equations Estimation (GEE), linear regression and Chi‐square test.Higher masticatory performance was observed in the NAT group (p < .05) for both time points, baseline and after 4 months. However, compared to baseline, both groups showed significant masticatory improvement after 4 months (p < .05). Satisfaction and overall quality of life improved after 4 months with no difference between groups (p > .05). Regarding the quality of the CD, baseline results were significantly (p < .05) lower in the AT group, but after 4 months, no significant differences were found between groups and in intragroup analysis (p > .05).The denture‐bearing conditions seems to impact masticatory function, but the PROMs are barely affected. Purpose: The potential relationship between mastication ability and cognitive function in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) patients is unclear. This report investigated the association between mastication and cognitive function in iNPH patients using the gray level of the co-occurrence matrix on the lateral pterygoid muscle. Methods: We analyzed data from 96 unoperated iNPH patients who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) between December 2016 and February 2023. Radiomic features were extracted from T2 MRI scans of the lateral pterygoid muscle, and muscle texture parameters were correlated with the iNPH grading scale. Subgroup analysis compared the texture parameters of patients with normal cognitive function with those of patients with cognitive impairment. Results: The mini-mental state examination score correlated positively with the angular second moment (P < 0.05) and negatively with entropy (P < 0.05). The dementia scale (Eide's classification) correlated negatively with gray values (P < 0.05). Gray values were higher in the cognitive impairment group (64.7 ± 16.6) when compared with the non-cognitive impairment group (57.4 ± 13.3) (P = 0.005). Entropy was higher in the cognitive impairment group (8.2 ± 0.3) than in the non-cognitive impairment group (8.0 ± 0.3) (P < 0.001). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.681 (P = 0.003) and 0.701 (P < 0.001) for gray value and entropy, respectively. Conclusion: Our findings suggest an association between heterogeneity of mastication and impaired cognitive function in iNPH patients and highlight muscle texture analysis as a potential tool for predicting cognitive impairment in these patients. Background: Effect of aging on tissue adaptability and retention of digital obturator is still under investigation. Methods: A maxillary Armany (class I) epoxy reference model was scanned to fabricate digital obturator fabricated from milled Co-Cr framework and 3D printed bulb. A color map of the scanned reference and digital obturator was made using Geomagic software to evaluate the accuracy of fit before and after cyclic loading using ROBOTA chewing simulator at 37,500, 75,000 and 150,000 cycles to simulate clinically 3-, 6- and 12-months chewing condition. Insertion-removal condition simulating the placement and removal of the obturator was done using repeated 360, 720 and 1440 cycles and retention was evaluated before and after the repeated cycles. Data were collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics 26). Student t-test and multi variable ANOVA test were used to detect significance. P-value < 0.05 was considered significant difference. Results: For retention test: There was a significant difference between baseline and 3, 6 and12 months. For the tissue surface adaptation test: There was significant difference at all measured areas (P-value < 0.05) before and after application of load. Conclusion: digitally designed and fabricated obturator was highly retentive and has excellent tissue surface adaptation upon fabrication, After application of load; reduction of retention and lack of tissue adaptation were resulted. The clinical implication: of this manuscript is that digital obturator can be used successfully with the shortcomings of loosening retention and adaptation afterwhile. The periodontal ligament plays a significant role in orthodontic and masticatory processes. To explicitly investigate the effects of dynamic force amplitude and frequency on the dynamic tensile properties of the periodontal ligament, in vitro tensile experiments were conducted using a dynamic mechanical analysis at various dynamic force amplitudes across a wide frequency range. Storage modulus, loss modulus, and loss factor values were measured. A Maxwell constitutive model based on modulus was established to describe the dynamic mechanical properties of the periodontal ligament. The results showed that the storage modulus ranged from 29.53 MPa to 158.24 MPa, the loss modulus ranged from 3.26 MPa to 76.16 MPa, and the loss factor values all increased with higher frequencies and higher dynamic force amplitudes. Based on the parameters obtained from the fitting results, it is evident that the short‐term response has a more pronounced impact on the elastic response of the periodontal ligament than the long‐term response. Increasing the dynamic force amplitude and its frequency amplified the viscous effects of the periodontal ligament and enhanced energy dissipation. The proposed constitutive model further demonstrated that the periodontal ligament acts as a viscoelastic biomaterial. Background Objectives Methods Results Conclusions Bilateral posterior crossbite (BPXB) is a severe malocclusion associated with maxillary hypoplasia. BPXB may involve the same or a different number of teeth between the sides.To evaluate the masticatory function in BPXB and the association between the masticatory alterations and the occlusal features of BPXB.This observational study included 170 participants: 130 patients with BPXB (65 occlusally symmetric BPXB, i.e. same number and type of posterior teeth in crossbite between the sides, F = 33, M = 32, median age 9.6 (8.2–13) [years.months]; 65 patients occlusally asymmetric BPXB, F = 30, M = 35, median age 9.9 (8.3–13.6)) and 40 controls (F = 25, M = 15, median age 10.2 (9.4–11.6)). The masticatory function was evaluated by the detection of the Reverse Chewing Cycles (RCCs) recorded with a kinesiograph using standardised soft and hard boluses.The frequency of RCCs was significantly increased in all BPXB patients compared to controls (p < .000). In symmetric BPXB patients, there were no significant differences in the frequency of RCCs during chewing on the left or the right side. The Indian Study of Healthy Ageing (ISHA) is a large-scale blood-based prospective study in India that aims to examine the burden, causes, and consequences of chronic diseases in the adult population. The study has recruited approximately 220,000 participants and is focused on testing hypotheses related to lifestyle, diet, obesity, and genetic determinants of cancer and other chronic diseases. The population studied is relatively lean, with low rates of tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking but high rates of tobacco chewing. The study will provide valuable insights into the risk factors for vascular and non-vascular mortality in the Indian population and contribute to understanding the impact of lifestyle transitions on chronic diseases. Data-sharing regulations are in place, and future collaborations are encouraged. The study collected baseline data from over 200,000 participants in India, including information on demographics, socioeconomic status, health behaviors, and physical measurements. The findings show that the participants in the study were, on average, younger and more highly educated than those under active follow-up. The study also found that the prevalence of underweight was similar between men and women, but overweight and obesity were slightly more common among women. Objective: This study aimed to explore the cross‐sectional and prospective associations between self‐reported functionality of complete dentures (FCD), satisfaction with complete dentures (SCD) and the ability to chew hard food (ACHF) on the one hand and the frailty index (FI) on the other hand among edentulous community‐dwelling older Japanese people. Methods: The study examined 770 edentulous participants of the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging. The self‐reported FCD, SCD and ability to chew six groups of food (from hardest to softest) with complete dentures were the independent variables at the baseline. The FI was computed including 40 deficits as the dependent variable at the baseline and 4 years later. Cross‐sectional and prospective generalized linear regression models were fitted controlling for age, gender, marital status, education, working status and area of residence. Results: The use of non‐functional complete dentures and dissatisfaction with complete dentures were both associated with a higher FI cross‐sectionally (3.9% [95% CI 2.2–5.6] and 3.2% [95% CI 1.5–4.9], respectively) and prospectively (3.9% [95% CI 2.0–6.0] and 3.3% [95% CI 1.3–5.3], respectively). Regarding the ability to chew, a higher FI at baseline was observed among those able to chew food of Group 2 (1.9%, [95% CI 0.1–3.7]) and Groups 4–6 (1.9%, [95% CI 0.1–3.7]), and a progressive increment in the FI, as the participants reported being able to chew softer groups of food at the follow‐up (Group 2: 2.2% [95% CI 0.05–4.3]; Group 3: 3.6% [95% CI 1.2–6.0]; and Groups 4–6: 3.4 [95% CI 0.7–6.1]). Background: Myogenic temporomandibular disorders (M‐TMD) commonly involve occlusal splint (OS) therapy and musculoskeletal physiotherapy (MPT). Objectives: To compare the effects of combining OS with MPT and education (EG) against OS and education (CG), in chronic M‐TMD patients. Methods: In this double‐blind randomised controlled trial, 62 participants were assigned to either EG or CG. The primary outcomes, pain levels at rest (VAS rest), maximum oral opening (VAS open) and during chewing (VAS chew), were measured by Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in cm. The secondary outcome was the range of motion (ROM) for maximum oral opening. Both interventions lasted 3 months, with outcomes assessed at baseline (T0), post‐treatment (T1) and 3 months post‐treatment (T2). Results: Intention‐to‐treat analysis revealed significant improvements favouring EG (VAS rest = −1.50 cm [CI95%: −2.67, −0.32], p =.04; VAS open = −2.00 cm [CI95%: −3.23, −0.75], p <.01; VAS chew = −1.71 cm [CI95%: −2.90, −0.52], p =.01; ROM = 4.61 [CI95%: 0.93, 8.30], p =.04). Additionally, VAS measures were influenced by follow‐up times (VAS rest = −0.73 cm [CI95%: −1.30, −0.17], p = 0.03; VAS open = −0.97 cm [CI95%: −1.57, −0.37], p <.01; VAS chew = −1.15 cm [CI95%: −1.73, −0.58], p <.01). At T1, EG demonstrated higher number of responders compared to CG for VAS open (χ2(1) = 4.39, p =.04) and VAS chew (χ2(1) = 11.58, p <.01). Objective: This prospective study is part of a randomised clinical trial and reports the changes in masticatory performance (MP) and bite force, and explores their influential factors, 1 year after the provision of mandibular overdentures retained by four titanium–zirconium mini implants. Methods: Edentulous patients received conventional complete dentures, followed by placement of four mini implants (Straumann® Mini Implant System) in the anterior mandible and converting the conventional prosthesis into a mandibular overdenture. Treatment protocols were randomised using a 2×2 factorial design combining different surgical (flapped vs. flapless) and loading (immediate vs. delayed) protocols. MP was assessed using a two‐colour mixing ability test and a colorimetric analysis to measure the level of colour mixing (Variance of Hue–VoH). Maximum voluntary bite force (MBF) was measured by a digital gnathodynamometer in the posterior and anterior regions. Sex, age, surgical and loading protocols and ridge morphology were tested as independent variables. MP and MBF tests were performed at baseline (pre‐treatment) and the 3‐, 6‐ and 12‐month after implant loading. Descriptive statistics, independent t‐test, and linear mixed‐effect model (LMM) regression were used for data analysis. Results: Seventy‐four participants were assessed and 73 completed the 1‐year follow‐up. Statistically significant improvements in functional parameters were observed in all follow‐up periods compared to baseline (p <.001). The flapless protocol was associated with higher improvement in MP at the 3‐month follow‐up (p =.004), while less resorbed ridges were associated with better MP (p =.038) and higher MBF (p <.001). Conclusion: The mandibular overdenture protocol using four titanium–zirconium mini implants was effective in improving MP and MBF of edentulous patients, compared to pre‐treatment values. The findings also suggest that improvements in chewing function and bite force are impacted by clinical factors since better outcomes were observed for flapless surgeries and less resorbed edentulous ridges. Background: Electromyographic activity (EMG) of masticatory muscles during wakefulness is understudied. It is unclear if single channel ambulatory EMG devices are sensitive enough to detect masticatory muscle activity (MMA) during wakefulness. Objectives: To compare the MMA of various oral tasks recorded with a single channel EMG device ((Grindcare4‐datalogger Prototype device) (GC4‐β)) and a conventional EMG (cEMG) device. Methods: EMG activity of 30 standardised oral tasks was recorded unilaterally from the masseter and anterior temporalis muscle in 24 healthy volunteers using GC4‐β and a cEMG device. To compare the EMG data, signal‐to‐noise ratios (SNR) were calculated as a way to normalise EMG activity across tasks. Analysis of variance was used to compare the SNR between the devices, muscles and oral tasks. Results: SNR measured from GC4‐β was overall significantly higher than the cEMG device (p =.001). The SNR for maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) was significantly higher than all other tasks (p <.001). SNR for temporalis with GC4‐β was significantly higher for MVC, hard food, soft food, gum chewing (dominant side), rhythmic clenching and upper lip biting compared to the cEMG device (p <.021). The SNR for masseter with GC4‐β was significantly higher for hard food and gum chewing (dominant side), rhythmic clenching, rhythmic biting of an object and yawning compared to the cEMG device (p <.022). Conclusions: This study provides novel insight into the EMG patterns of numerous oral tasks enhancing knowledge of physiological differences between the masticatory muscles. Background: It can be challenging to perform a second task at the same time as swallowing. Objective(s): The study aimed to investigate the effect of visual, auditory and motor dual‐tasking on swallowing and chewing function in healthy young adults. Method: Right‐handed healthy adults without any psychological and cognitive problems were included in the study. Swallowing was evaluated based on the dysphagia limit in different liquid textures such as water and nectar consistencies, and chewing was evaluated by the Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids. For the second task, visual and auditory performance was assessed using reaction time, and the motor performance was assessed using a bilateral tapping task. Assessments were performed in two steps: baseline and dual‐task. For baseline, all evaluation methods were applied individually. After completing the baseline assessment, dual‐task assessment were carried out the following day. For dual‐task assessment, the swallowing and chewing tasks were performed simultaneously with visual, auditory and motor tasks. Results: Results showed a significant decrease in dysphagia limit in the nectar consistency, and significant increase in chewing time, visual reaction time and tapping rate (right–left) when compared to baseline and dual‐task conditions (χ2(3) = 9.61, p =.02; χ2(3) = 9.02, p =.02; χ2(3) = 28.09, p <.001; χ2(3) = 28.97, p <.001; χ2(3) = 21.56, p <.001, respectively). However, there were no differences in dysphagia limit in the water and auditory reaction time compared to baseline and dual‐task conditions (χ2(3) = 3.18, p =.36; χ2(3) = 2.56, p =.50, respectively). Conclusion: Results shedding light on how simultaneous dual tasks can influence swallowing and chewing. Dual‐tasking cause a decrease in both swallowing/chewing and the visual/motor performances. Background: The present study assessed the impact of oral health on the daily lives of children and mothers living in a rural area in Northwestern Egypt. Methods: A cross-sectional household survey including children between 6 and 12 years old and their mothers was conducted in rural Egypt, 2019–2020. Data were collected using clinical examination and interview-based questionnaires of children and mothers. Three binary logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between the dependent variables (oral health impact (yes, no) on avoiding smiling, chewing problems, and missing school (children) and avoiding social events (mothers)), and the explanatory variables: oral health (clinically-assessed caries experience and self-reported oral health) controlling for sociodemographic profile (child age and sex, mother's education), daily toothbrushing and village of residence. Results: A total of 211 households with 355 children and 211 mothers were included (91.5% response rate). About 54% of the children were girls, mean (SD) age = 8.7 (2.05) years and 82.3% did not brush their teeth daily. Mother's mean (SD) age was 31.70 (5.45) years. Because of dental problems, 31.3% of children reported chewing difficulties, 31% avoided smiling compared to 76.3% and 43.6% of mothers. Also, 30.4% of children missed school and 76.8% of mothers reported reduced participation in social activities. In children, the number of decayed anterior teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of avoiding smiling (AOR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.03, 1.44). In mothers, a greater number of posterior missing teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of chewing difficulties (AOR = 1.21, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.45), and a greater number of all missing teeth was associated with significantly higher odds of reduced participation in social events (AOR = 1.30, 95%CI: 1.30, 1.57). Good/ very good reported oral health in children and mothers was associated with lower odds of avoiding smiling and chewing problems (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Decayed anterior teeth in children have a negative impact on smiling whereas missing teeth in mothers affect the ability to chew food and socialize. Background The use of clear aligners is becoming more common for aesthetic orthodontic treatment, but there are still concerns about how they affect mastication biomechanics in the short and long term. The clear aligners treatment (CAT) mechanism changes the position of the mandible and maxilla, especially impacting the masseter muscle. Surface electromyography (sEMG) proves to be a useful method to evaluate masticatory muscle activity (MMA). Objectives To analyze the effect of clear aligners treatment on alterations in masticatory muscles (masseter, temporalis) using surface electromyography. Search methods Five databases (PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar) were searched up to March 2024. Selection criteria Studies in which MMA was evaluated after the installation of orthodontic clear aligners. Data collection and analysis Screening, data extraction, and quality assessments were performed by four investigators independently. The data, which evaluated temporalis and masseter muscle characteristics during CAT using surface electromyography, was extracted, and the quality of the studies was evaluated. The risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). Results Six studies (two prospective cohort studies, three observational longitudinal studies, and one observational longitudinal case–control study) with low and moderate risk of bias were included in the qualitative synthesis. Six of these were also included in the meta-analysis. Our study investigated the dynamics of masseter and temporalis muscle activity during CAT. The results show that during maximal voluntary clenching, the masseter muscle demonstrated a significant initial increase (P  < .05) followed by a subsequent non-significant decrease. It also showed that submaximal voluntary clenching consistently exhibited a significant reduction in muscle activity throughout the study period (P  < .01). Assessment of muscle activity at the mandibular resting position revealed a variety of responses, with some participants showing a significant increase while others exhibited non-significant changes (P  < .05, P  > .05, respectively). However, the meta-analysis showed a non-significant difference in measuring masseter and temporalis muscles activity during CAT. Conclusions Based on existing evidence, it is reasonable to conclude that CAT affected MMA. During maximal voluntary clenching, masseter muscle activity initially increased but later decreased, while temporalis muscle activity showed mixed results. Submaximal voluntary clenching revealed a consistent decrease in muscle activity over time. Mandibular resting position assessments showed both increases and no significant changes in muscle activity. However, the existing literature is insufficient to draw concrete conclusions; therefore, well-conducted further research is needed to confirm this statement. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of treatment of bilateral posterior crossbite (BPXB) on mandibular kinematics by the percentage of reverse chewing cycles (RCCs) during soft and hard bolus chewing before and after the correction of the malocclusion with function‐generating bite (FGB). Materials and Methods: This prospective study included 71 subjects: 19 patients with occlusally symmetric BPXB (M = 9; F = 10; mean age 9.3 ± 2.2[yr.mo]), 32 patients with occlusally asymmetric BPXB (19 with more teeth in crossbite on the right side (right prevalent side), M = 7; F = 12; mean age 8.2 ± 1.6 [yr.mo] and 13 on the left side, M = 7; F = 6; mean age 9.6 ± 1.9 [yr.mo]) and 20 controls without malocclusion (M = 8; F = 12; mean age 10.2 ± 1.7 [yr.mo]). Masticatory patterns were recorded before (T0) and after (T1) the correction of the malocclusion with FGB, with the K7‐I® kinesiograph using standardized soft and hard boluses. Results: BPXB was corrected in all included patients. At T0, the percentage of RCCs in BPXB was significantly increased compared to controls (P <.0001); symmetric BPXB showed no difference in RCCs between the sides, whereas asymmetric BPXB showed significantly more RCCs on the side with more teeth in crossbite (prevalent side). After treatment with FGB (T1), the percentage of RCCs was significantly reduced in both symmetric BPXB patients (soft bolus, P =.003; hard bolus, P <.001) and asymmetric BPXB patients (prevalent side: soft and hard bolus, P <.00001; non‐prevalent side: soft bolus, P =.01 and hard bolus, P =.0002). Driving stress is a multifaceted phenomenon, and the experience of driving invokes stress. Driving causes the activation of stress-response mechanisms, leading to short-term and long-term stress responses resulting in physiological and behavioral changes. The aim of this study was to evaluate driving stress-initiated effects on orofacial functions and health behaviors in the Riyadh population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Riyadh using a pre-validated set of questionnaires for habitual information, a driving stress assessment using a driving-behavior inventory, and an assessment of parafunctional habits and effects on orofacial functions. The results indicate that nearly 50% of the sample spends more than two hours commuting, and more than 50% of the sample has inadequate sleep and insufficient exercise. Oral parafunctional habits like nail biting (p = 0.039) and lip or object biting (p = 0.029) had a significant correlation with aggressive driving behaviors, whereas the grinding of teeth (p = 0.011), the clenching of jaws (p = 0.048), lip or object biting (p = 0.018), and pain in mastication (p = 0.036) had a positive correlation with driving dislikes. Driving stress can be detrimental to one's health and not only impacts health behaviors but also induces oral parafunctional habits and adversely affects orofacial regions and functions. Acute driving stress responses may be transient. However, prolonged driving stress can be maladaptive and can increase the risk of chronic diseases including chronic temporomandibular joint disorders and parafunctional habit-related changes in the oral cavity. The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) consists of bone, cartilage, ligaments, and associated masticatory muscles and tendons that coordinate to enable mastication in mammals. The TMJ is innervated by the trigeminal nerve (CNV), containing axons of motor and somatosensory neurons. Somatosensation includes touch, temperature, proprioception, and pain that enables mammals to recognize and react to stimuli for survival. The somatosensory innervation of the TMJ remains poorly defined. Disorders of the TMJ (TMD) are of diverse etiology and presentation. Some known symptoms associated with TMD include facial, shoulder, or neck pain, jaw popping or clicking, headaches, toothaches, and tinnitus. Acute or chronic pain in TMD stems from the activation of somatosensory nociceptors. Treatment of TMD may involve over-the-counter and prescription medication, nonsurgical treatments, and surgical treatments. In many cases, treatment achieves only a temporary relief of symptoms including pain. We suggest that defining the sensory innervation of the temporomandibular joint and its associated tissues with a specific focus on the contribution of peripheral innervation to the development of chronic pain could provide insights into the origins of joint pain and facilitate the development of improved analgesics and treatments for TMD. Opossums (marsupials of the Didelphidae family) retain a generalized masticatory apparatus and tribosphenic molars, often used as models to understand the evolution of mastication in early therian mammals. Like all marsupials, their growth goes through a stage when pups complete their development while permanently attached to the mother's teats before weaning and starting feeding on their own. Yet, while the masticatory muscles of adults are known, as is the ontogeny of the cranium and mandible, the ontogenetic changes in the masticatory muscles remain unknown. Here we describe for the first time the changes in the masticatory muscles observed in lactating pups, and weaned juveniles, subadults, and adults in the White‐eared opossum, Didelphis albiventris, through dissection of 25 specimens and quantification of relative muscle masses, lines of actions and mechanical advantages whenever possible. We also assessed the scaling patterns of muscle masses and mechanical advantages through ontogeny. The main changes, as expected, were found between suckling and weaned specimens, although some changes still occurred from juveniles to adults. The adult adductor musculature is similar to the other Didelphis species already known, with a dominant m. temporalis that originates on the lateral wall of the skull, up to the sagittal and nuchal crests, and fills the zygomatic arch when inserting into the lateral and medial surfaces of the coronoid process, respectively through the pars superficialis and pars profunda. The m. masseter is also subdivided in superficial and deep bundles which originate posteriorly in the maxilla and zygomatic arch, and insert into the angular process and masseteric fossa in the mandible. The m. pterygoideus medialis originates from the palatine, the pterygoid bone and the alisphenoid, and it inserts on the angular process medially. Suckling pups showed muscles with more restricted attachments, reduced muscle lines of action, and less diversity in the fiber orientation. The absence of the postorbital constriction also resulted in a distinct morphology of the m. temporalis pars profunda, through two bundles, one anterior and one posterior, which insert more inferiorly into the mandible. These major changes can be related to the onset of mastication and to size‐related changes in growing weaned age classes. In general, all adductor muscles grew with positive allometry, and increased their fixation areas through, in part, the development of specific regions of the cranium and mandible. Their lines of action also increase and diversify along ontogeny. This study aimed to investigate the effect of homemade green ripe period chewing tablets on gastrointestinal function in mice. The free combination of Kunming mice was divided into a blank control group, a positive control group, a model control group, a green ripe period Tuokexun apricot fruit group, a low-dose group of green ripe period Tuokexun apricot chewable tablets, a medium dose group of green ripe period Tuokexun apricot chewable tablets, and a high-dose group of green ripe period Tuokexun apricot chewable tablets. After 7 days of adaptive feeding, loperamide hydrochloride was used in the mouse model of constipation, through studies of gastrointestinal function in mice, the effects of first blue stool time, the number of defecation grains, fecal moisture content, small bowel propulsion rate, colon water content, and gastric emptying rate were obtained. Results showed that there were significant differences in various indicators between the low, medium, and high dose groups of the green ripening stage Tuokexun apricot chewing tablets and the constipation model control group, positive control group, and green ripening stage Tuokexun apricot fruit group. This indicated that the green ripe period Tuokexun apricot chewing tablets could significantly improve the small intestine propulsion rate, shorten the defecation time, increase the number of defecated particles in 6 hours, increase gastric emptying rate, fecal water content, and colon water content in constipation model mice, through deeply studying the laxative mechanism, showing that it could regulate the content of P substance and vasoactive intestinal peptide, promote intestinal peristalsis, and improve constipation. A major part of this process is mastication, which prepares a bolus of food for swallowing by mechanically crushing and grinding ingested food between the teeth using rhythmic movements. Masticatory dysfunction is common in the elderly and in some neurological disorders and can have serious negative health consequences.This study investigated the effect of restricted mastication, achieved by experimentally reducing the duration of mastication, on masticatory patterns and subsequent swallowing function.Thirty healthy men (25 ± 3 years old) were instructed to chew gum jelly with a free mastication duration (G100), a half and a quarter duration of G100. Masseter and digastric electromyographic (EMG) activity was recorded to assess mastication and swallowing activity, respectively. In addition, the acceleration of the thyroid cartilage ridge was measured with an accelerometer. The root mean square (RMS) of muscle EMG activity in the masseter and digastric muscles, the number of masseter EMG bursts, time to peak and total duration of each masseter EMG burst, swallowing duration and laryngeal elevation latency were analysed.Restricting masticatory duration reduced the number of mastication cycles (p < .001), prolonged the time to peak (p < .001) and total duration of masseter EMG bursts (p < .001) and resulted in an overall increased RMS score of masseter muscle activity (p = .017). Furthermore, restricted masticatory duration led to a decrease in both swallowing duration (p = .001) and laryngeal elevation latency (p = .012), with a significant increase in the RMS score of digastric muscle activity (p < .001).Under the experimental conditions of restricted mastication, several adaptation features were observed, including changes in masticatory cycle characteristics and swallowing duration. The present investigation examined the oropharyngeal roof of two turtles having different feeding behaviors: the landform Greek tortoise (Testudo graeca graeca) primarily herbivores and the semi-aquatic red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) lives in freshwater that opportunistic omnivorous grossly and by scanning and light microscopes. Grossly, the Greek tortoise had a V-shaped roof consisting of the upper rhamphotheca, peri-palatine region, upper alveolar ridge, peripheral palatine ridge, median palatine ridge, vomer, choanae, caudal palatine part, and pharynx. At the same time, the red-eared slider had a semilunar roof consisting of upper rhamphotheca, two peripheral palatine ridges, core of palatine ridges, upper alveolar band, vomer, choanae, caudal palatine part, and pharynx. SEM revealed that the red-eared slider roof appeared more straightforward. The upper rhamphotheca is sharp, with a median premaxillary notch in the red-eared slider that gives a powerful bite for cutting to compensate absence of the teeth. Additionally, the red-eared slider's upper alveolar band is interrupted by a single upper alveolar ridge that appears spiky, pointed, and longer as it needs powerful chewing of prey and there are two types of teeth-like projections at its peri-palatine area for food-crushing and chewing. The Greek tortoise palatine region had numerous ridges and folds to provide roughness for food processing. Greek tortoises had small-sized choanae with two choanal folds to minimize choanal openings when eating dusty grasses. Histologically, Greek tortoise palate was rostrally thicker and more keratinized than caudally, and the caudal palatine region was characterized by a single pair of circumvallate-like papilla with multiple mucous openings and secretions, while red-eared slider palate was slightly keratinized at the peri-choanal region, and the rest of the palate was non-keratinized with few mucous openings. Background: Craniosynostosis (CS), premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, leads to abnormal skull development, impacting both facial esthetics and oral function. This study aimed to evaluate the specific orofacial and oral health characteristics, including masticatory performance, in Thai patients with CS. Methods: A comparative study was conducted with Thai CS patients aged 6–17 years and a control group of healthy individuals with similar age distribution. Assessments included craniofacial morphology, oral health status, and masticatory performance. Intergroup comparisons utilized appropriate statistical tests. Results: The study included 24 CS patients with a mean age of 10.11 ± 2.98 years and 30 controls. CS patients exhibited a significantly higher prevalence of various oral conditions compared to controls: cleft palate (20.8%), anterior open bite (41.7%), anterior crossbite (54.2%), posterior crossbite (50%), combined anterior–posterior crossbite (45.8%), dental crowding in both maxilla and mandible (50% and 45.8% respectively), congenitally missing teeth (50%), supernumerary teeth (12.5%), and eruption failure (54.2%). Furthermore, CS patients exhibited significantly higher caries prevalence and susceptibility, alongside poorer oral hygiene, compared to controls. Regarding jaw relationships, CS patients exhibited a significantly higher proportion of Angle's Class III malocclusion (50%) compared to the control group, where Class I malocclusion was predominant (50%). Masticatory performance, assessed using the two-color gum mixing ability test, showed significantly higher hue variance in CS patients (0.12 ± 0.07) compared to the control group, indicating reduced chewing performance. Conclusion: This study underscores the significant orofacial and oral health challenges faced by children with CS, including a high prevalence of malocclusions, dental anomalies, elevated caries experience, and compromised masticatory function. These findings emphasize the importance of tailored interventions and comprehensive oral healthcare strategies to address the unique needs of this population and improve their overall quality of life. Introduction: Root coverage procedures are often carried out for compromised aesthetics, dentinal hypersensitivity, difficulty in the maintenance of plaque control, root caries and bone loss. Regenerative attempts are hindered by the root surface’s avascularity and microbiologically compromised condition. Furthermore, freshly created tissue needs to withstand the physical pressures of mastication and procedures related to the maintenance of oral hygiene by the patient. The key issues include surgical challenges, time and patients’ discomfort despite the various surgical methods that have been performed for the root coverage. The complications related to donor site, sparked interest for the development of newer innovative techniques that helps to meet patient’s aesthetic and functional needs. Pinhole surgical technique (PST) being minimally invasive is used in our study to treat gingival recession using amniotic membrane. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 participants were selected randomly with having Miller’s Class I or II recession. Each patient received thorough information on how to practice good oral hygiene. A scaling and root planning process was carried out across the entire mouth. Re-evaluation of research sites was done 1 month after phase I therapy to validate its appropriateness. PST was done randomly on the chosen sites, along with the application of amniotic membrane. Results: All the clinical parameters i.e., recession depth (RD), recession width (RW) and clinical attachment level (CAL), were seen improving significantly at 6 months postoperatively compared to baseline except width of keratinized gingiva (WKG) (P = 0.08) and thickness of keratinized gingiva (TKG) (P = 0.14). All the clinical parameters i.e., RD (P = 0.017), RW (P = 0.017), probing depth (P = 0.03) and CAL (P = 0.05) improved significantly at 12 months postoperatively compared to baseline. However, WKG and TKG showed statistically insignificant changes at 12 months postoperatively (P = 0.08, P = 0.14). Significant difference in Visual Analogue Scale score was seen postoperatively at day 1, 3 and 5. Conclusion: Pinhole surgical approach is used to treat Miller’s Class I-II recession. It may be a better option than the other techniques because it is less invasive, time and money efficient. • This meta-analysis found no variation in gut peptides between obesity and leanness. • Different dietary interventions alter gut peptides in people with obesity. • Pea protein, whey protein, and guar gum can increase the expression of gut peptides. Gut peptides play a role in signaling appetite control in the hypothalamus. Limited knowledge exists regarding the release of these peptides in individuals with obesity before and during external stimuli. We hypothesize that the expression of gut peptides is different in the fasting and postprandial states in the scenario of obesity. PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Science Direct electronic databases were searched. The meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager Software. Randomized controlled trials that measured gut peptides in both obese and lean subjects were included in the analysis. A total of 552 subjects with obesity were enrolled in 25 trials. The gut peptide profile did not show any significant difference between obese and lean subjects for glucagon-like peptide 1 (95% confidence interval [CI], –1.21 to 0.38; P =.30), peptide YY (95% CI, –1.47 to 0.18; P =.13), and cholecystokinin (95% CI, –1.25 to 1.28; P =.98). Gut peptides are decreased by an increased high-fat, high-carbohydrate diet and by decreased chewing. There is no statistically significant difference in gut peptides between individuals with obesity and leanness in a fasting state. However, the release of gut peptides is affected in individuals with obesity following external stimuli, such as dietary interventions and chewing. Further studies are necessary to investigate the relationship between various stimuli and the release of gut peptides, as well as their impact on appetite regulation in subjects with obesity. Gut peptides undergo changes in response to various stimuli following a dietary intervention. Certain stimuli could either decrease or increase the expression of these peptides in the gastrointestinal tract. In obese individuals, diminished chewing and a diet rich in carbohydrates and fats seems to lower the expression of gut peptides. Background: Oral frailty, characterised by reduced oral function, is associated with systemic health issues in older adults. Although the criteria for diminished oral function often focus on motor and secretory abilities, texture perception also plays a crucial role in health due to its impact on food intake and palatability. Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between thickness discrimination ability (TDA) and oral motor and secretory functions in healthy young individuals. Methods: Twenty‐eight adults were assessed for texture perception using eight concentrations of aqueous xanthan gum solutions to determine TDA scores. Measurements of occlusal force, masticatory performance, tongue pressure, stimulated salivary flow rate and tongue–lip motor function were conducted. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between TDA scores and oral functions. Participants were divided into high‐sensitivity and low‐sensitivity groups based on their TDA scores to compare oral function test results. Results: The TDA scores varied among the participants, with higher scores correlating with higher masticatory performance (r = 0.41, p <.05). Masticatory performance in the high‐sensitivity group was significantly higher than in the low‐sensitivity group (211.9 ± 59.2 mg/dL vs. 157.9 ± 43.0 mg/dL, p =.013), with no significant differences in other oral functions. Conclusion: Masticatory performance was correlated with TDA, suggesting a link between the selection function of mastication and thickness discrimination. These findings highlight the potential relevance of texture perception in oral function and indicate the need for further exploration, particularly in older adults with declining oral health. Background: The noteworthy correlation between bite force and masticatory performance emphasizes its significance as a meaningful and objective method for assessing oral function. Furthermore, in the study of bruxism, the measurement of intraoral bite force assumes critical importance. Given the importance of assessing occlusal forces and bite force, this systematic review aims to assess the efficacy of wireless sensors in measuring these forces. Methods: The search methodology employed in this systematic review adhered to the guidelines outlined by PRISMA. The strategy involved the exploration of various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS and SCIELO. An assessment tool was employed to evaluate the bias risk and study quality. Results: This systematic review encompassed six prospective clinical studies involving a total of 89 participants. Wireless sensors for measuring occlusal forces and bite forces were predominantly employed in healthy adults or individuals with bruxism, along with children undergoing orthodontic treatment. All wireless sensors employed in the studies underwent validation and reproducibility assessments, affirming their reliability. The findings indicated that all wireless sensors exhibited efficacy in detecting occlusal forces and bite forces. Conclusion: Wireless sensors offer real‐time monitoring of occlusal and bite forces, aiding in understanding force distribution and identifying bruxism patterns. Despite limited studies on their application, these sensors contribute to evolving insights. Integration into clinical practice requires careful consideration of factors like calibration and patient compliance. Background: The early form of caries can affect solid food consumption. Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of oral health status on chewing performance, and tolerated food texture among preschool children suffering from early childhood caries (ECC). Methods: A cross‐sectional study was conducted with a sample of 109 children aged between 3 and 6 years, who were allocated to three groups (severe‐ECC (s‐ECC), ECC and control) on the basis of their caries. Chewing function was evaluated by using the 'Karaduman Chewing Performance Scale (KCPS)' and the Turkish version of the 'Mastication Observation and Evaluation instrument (T‐MOE)', and the tolerated food texture was determined by the 'International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI)'. Carious lesions, oral hygiene and gingival health status were evaluated by using the 'decayed, missing, filled tooth/surface indices (dmft/s)', 'plaque and gingival indices'; respectively. Results: A total of 56 children (51.4%) had s‐ECC, 39 (35.8%) had ECC and 14 (12.8%) had no caries (control group). KCPS showed that 26 (86.7%) children suffering from s‐ECC were at level 1, and 11 (100%) children were at level 2. Seven (100%) children with s‐ECC had IDDSI level‐5. All children with healthy oral status had IDSSI level‐7. Compared to the ECC and control groups, the s‐ECC group had significantly lower scores from the T‐MOE total and subscale scores (p <.001). Conclusion: The evaluation of chewing performance during routine dental examinations of children with ECC (especially s‐ECC) may considerably contribute to the early diagnosis of chewing problems and the provision of necessary oral rehabilitation. The maxillofacial region is an extremely important region of the body from birth, which is responsible for various functions such as sucking, swallowing, chewing, breathing and pronunciation. It has a complex structure and involves a variety of biological substances from the organ level to the molecular level. Since olden times, clinicians and basic researchers have been interested in the structural changes that occur when function is impaired, and numerous studies have been conducted. Nonetheless, the opposite direction, i.e., how structural disturbances, or malocclusion in orthodontics, affect function, has been less well understood. This is probably because of the methodological difficulties involved. In this review, we will first summarize the old question of whether dysfunction affects occlusion, focusing on masticatory function, especially jaw function, and then, based on this, we will outline a new concept, the proposition of whether malocclusion affects function, focusing on the "substances" that serve as the interface between structure and function. To evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on pain intensity (PI) and chewing performance (CP) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with myogenic temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Ninety-one patients were randomly allocated to three groups: Group L (intervention), Group P (placebo), and Group C (control). Outcomes were PI (assessed with visual analog scale (VAS)) and CP (assessed with the geometric mean diameter (GMD) of crushed test food). Measurements were performed at T0 (before the LLLT), T1 (immediately after the LLLT), and T2 (1-month follow-up). Data were analyzed using Generalized Linear Models, Kruskal-Wallis, and Friedman tests. For T1 and T2, Group L demonstrated the lowest values for both GMD (6283.7 ± 257.2 µm; 6382.7 ± 303.7 µm) and VAS (5;6) (p < 0.001). Periodontitis is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases in humans and animals. It is a multifactorial disease resulting in attachment loss and tooth loss. Therefore, preventive dentistry, such as daily teeth cleaning or providing dental chews from puppyhood is essential. This study aimed to find an alternative option for preventive dentistry by examining both in vitro and clinically, the antibacterial, antihalitosis, and anti-inflammatory effects of folic acid (FA) in dogs with periodontal disease. The antibacterial and antihalitosis responses of FA were evaluated in vitro using Porphyromonas gulae, a bacterium that plays a significant role in the development of periodontal disease in dogs. Anti-inflammatory responses, such as secretion of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 induced by P. gulae infection in human gingival epithelium have been studied. This study used dogs with P. gulae -associated periodontal diseases and was conducted by providing a dental chew containing 0.13% FA for 28 days. The viability and halitosis production (hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan) of P. gulae was significantly inhibited by FA in a dose and time-dependent manner. IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 secretion were also significantly suppressed by FA treatment in a dose-dependent manner. In vitro bactericidal, antihalitosis, and anti-inflammatory effects of FA were confirmed in dogs with P. gulae -associated periodontal disease. One month of oral treatment with 0.13% FA-containing dental chews significantly reduced halitosis as well as P. gulae activity. Background: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between an increase in waist circumference (WC) after 1 year and self-reported chewing status in 10,870 Japanese adults who had received health checkups. Subsequently, 8068 participants were included in the final analysis. Methods: We defined an increase in WC ≥ 5 cm after 1 year as an unhealthy increase; in total, 613 (7.5%) respondents met this criterion. Chewing status was evaluated using a self-reported questionnaire at baseline; 1080 (13%) respondents were diagnosed with poor chewing status. Results: After adjusting for age, gender, WC, body mass index (BMI), and chewing status, an increase in WC ≥ 5 cm was found to be positively associated with gender (females: odds ratios [ORs]: 1.206; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]: 1.008–1.443), WC (ORs: 0.967; 95% CIs: 0.954–0.981), BMI (≥25 kg/m2; ORs: 2.194; 95% CIs: 1.715–2.808), and chewing status (poor; ORs: 1.356; 95% CIs: 1.084–1.697). Background: The objective of this work was to investigate the association between the function of the stomatognathic system and migraine presence through an instrumental functional analysis in a group of diagnosed migraine patients and a control group. Methods: This study included 50 individuals in each group. A jaw-tracking analysis was performed using Cadiax 4. Tracings of the following movements were recorded: open/close, protrusion/retrusion, mediotrusion, speech, bruxing, and mastication. The tracings were evaluated for their quantity, quality, transversal characteristics, speed, curvature pattern, and condylar stability. Results: Statistically significant differences between the groups were established for several aspects of the evaluation. Migraineurs presented with (a) higher values of mandibular lateral translation in protrusion/retrusion (p = 0.001), open/close (p = 0.031), and mastication (p = 0.016); (b) transient velocity losses in open/close (p = 0.001) and protrusive movements (p = 0.018); (c) a compromised condylar stability for protrusion/retrusion (p = 0.001) and mediotrusion (p = 0.003); (d) a compromised quality for protrusion/retrusion (p < 0.001) and mediotrusion (p = 0.003); and (e) a more frequent "figure-eight" curvature in open/close (p = 0.012). Conclusions: The importance of the stomatognathic function in migraine pathogenesis and treatment should be considered by using a patient-centered and interdisciplinary approach.
