Abstract

Interaction of axisymmetrically-polarized (radially or azimuthally-polarized), relativistically intense laser pulses (ALP) with under-dense plasma is shown experimentally to be different from the interaction of conventional Gaussian pulses. The difference is clearly observed in distinct spectra of scattered laser light as well as in appearance of a strong side emission of second harmonic in the vicinity of focus spot. According 3D particle-in-cell simulations, this is a result of instability in the propagation of ALP in under-dense plasma. Laser wakefield acceleration of electrons by ALP, therefore, is less efficient than that by Gaussian laser pulses but ALP may be interesting for efficient electron self-injection., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Propagation of relativistically intense azimuthally or radially polarized laser pulses (RPP) in underdense plasmas is demonstrated to be unstable, via 3D particle-in-cell simulation and disregarding the Kerr non-linearity. Strong pulse filamentation occurs for RPP in transversely uniform plasma with an increment, $\Gamma$, close to the well-known one depending on acceleration, $\alpha$, and modulated density gradient length, $L$, as $\Gamma \approx (\alpha/L)^{1/2}$. Abstract

Detention basins, typically installed adjacent to rivers, prevent the rise in water levels downstream by temporarily storing river water. Furthermore, these basins potentially promote biodiversity by creating floodplains as refuges during floods. The heights of the inlet dikes, which divert river water into the basins during floods, are designed just below the flood elevation to maximise disaster prevention. However, the accessibility of these artificial basins to organisms during floods is uncertain, primarily due to the design of the inlet dikes. Herein, we experimentally examined the effect of the height of these inlets on fish entering the detention basins during floods. The Aqua Restoration Research Center created small‐scale detention basins next to the experimental streams to induce artificial flooding using movable water gates. We controlled the height of the inlet boards to simulate an inlet dike and recorded the number of fishes that entered these basins during an experimental flood. The number of individuals moving into the basins increased as the height of the inlet board decreased. No fish were captured in the basins with the highest inlet board, which was set just below the experimental flood level. While the detention basin needs to be of a certain height of the inlet for effective flood control, we suggest a solution that may be possible to achieve both objectives, disaster prevention and biodiversity conservation, by altering the inlet location, with reference to a Japanese traditional flood reduction installation, the Kasumi‐tei. Abstract

To overcome the delayed or failed engraftment after unrelated cord blood transplantation (CBT), we conducted a multicenter phase II study of intrabone single-unit CBT without antithymocyte globulin (ATG) for adult patients with hematological malignancies (UMIN-CTR, UMIN000020997). Sixty-four patients received an intrabone injection of unwashed (n = 61) or washed (n = 3) cord blood after local anesthesia. All injection-related adverse events were mild and resolved spontaneously. Sixty-two patients were evaluable for the efficacy of intrabone CBT of serological HLA-A, -B, and -DR ≥ 4/6 matched cord blood with a median number of 2.57 × 10^7/kg cryopreserved total nucleated cells. The probability of survival with neutrophil engraftment on day 28 was 77.4% (95% confidence interval, 67.0–85.8%), which exceeded the threshold value. The cumulative incidences of neutrophils ≥ 0.5 × 10^9/L on day 60 was 80.6% (68.2–88.6%), with a median time to recovery of 21 days after transplantation. The cumulative incidences of platelets ≥ 20 × 10^9/L and platelets ≥ 50 × 10^9/L on day 100 were 75.8% (62.6–84.9%) and 72.6% (59.4–82.1%), respectively, with median time to platelets ≥ 20 × 10^9/L and platelets ≥ 50 × 10^9/L of 38 and 45 days after transplantation, respectively. The cumulative incidences of grade II–IV and III–IV acute graft-versus-host disease were 29.0% and 6.5%, respectively. All responded to steroid therapy, and secondary treatments were not required. The present study suggests the efficacy of intrabone single-unit CBT without ATG in terms of early engraftment and controllable acute graft-versus-host disease.

15. Light source based on a 100 mm-long monolithic undulator magnet with a very short 4 mm-period length

Abstract

A novel method to fabricate undulator magnets of a-few-millimetre-period length is being explored. Plate-type magnets, 100 mm-long with 4 mm-period length, have been successfully fabricated. They produce an undulator field of approximately 3 kG at a gap of 1.6 mm. Prototype undulators based on this technology have been constructed. Field measurements and characterization show that the quality of the undulator field of these plate magnets is sufficient for an undulator light source, and the calculated spectrum shows that the fundamental radiation emitted from this field is quite satisfactory. Test experiments for light generation using a real electron beam have been carried out at a test accelerator at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University, Japan, which is able to realize optics conditions to accept a very short gap of 1.6 mm. First observation and characterization of blue light was successfully accomplished.

In the presentation, we show the design and our approach to achieve soft X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs) by using staged laser plasma acceleration (LPA) of electrons.The staged LPA consists of several functionalized stages such as electron injector, phase rotation, and energy booster to manipulate electron beams to satisfy the requirements for an XFEL. Abstract

Many patients with myeloid malignancies are ineligible for conventional allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) with myeloablative conditioning because of their age, medical problems, or the lack of a suitable HLA-identical related donor. The outcome of 9 patients with myeloid malignancies who underwent allo-HSCT following fludarabine- and busulfan- based reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) from unrelated or mismatched related donor is herein described. Six patients received bone marrow from an unrelated donor, two received a serologically mismatched related allograft, and one received serologically mismatched unrelated cord blood. All patients demonstrated successfully engraftment at a median of 15 days and showed complete donor chimerism of 9527772566420n day 28. One patient developed grade 3 regimen-related toxicity. Grade II to IV acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and extensive type chronic GVHD developed in 6 and 4 patients, respectively. Of the two patients who received the second HSCT, one died of relapse and one died of acute GVHD. The remaining 7 patients are currently alive in remission. The overall survival at 4 years after allo-HSCT was 77.8%.0 These observations suggest that these RIC regimens enable rapid engraftment of stem cells from alternative donors with tolerable toxicities in patients who are not eligible for conventional HSCT.

Abstract

The aim of this randomized phase II study was to improve the treatment delays and discontinuations associated with bendamustine use by comparing the effect of Benda-14 (intravenous bendamustine, 120 mg/m2 on days 1 and 15, repeated every 4 weeks for a total of 6 cycles) with those of the standard treatment in relapsed indolent lymphoma and/or mantle cell lymphoma. Forty-six patients were randomly assigned to the treatments from September 2012 to February 2016. Treatment accomplishment rate and median relative dose intensity were similar in both arms: 38 and 63.4% in the Benda-14 arm and 41 and 66.3% in the standard treatment arm, respectively. The overall response rate and median progression-free survival, respectively, were 83% and 21.0 months for Benda-14, and 77% and 15.5 months for the standard treatment.
