This study examined the role of science identity in a two-year upper-division research training program that prepares diverse undergraduate students for a research career. Using the annual year-end student evaluation data, we examined whether science identity is a predictor or an outcome of learning that enhances career preparation in biomedical research. Results showed that science identity is a predictor of learning in our trainees. In general, students with stronger science identity at the end of Year 2 reported having acquired more research skills and experiences through the program. This finding demonstrates that science identity makes learning research skills meaningful and purposeful. Preliminary analyses also showed that the levels of science identity did not differ between Years 1 and 2. In fact, science identity approached the maximum possible scores in both years. These findings imply that the training program could have succeeded in bolstering participants' science identity early by the end of the first year. Our findings do not rule out the possibility that science identity is both a predictor and an outcome of learning, depending on the specific contexts of learning as well as learners' specific developmental phases. Further studies are needed to systematically test these and other possibilities.

Wider visibility of information literacy (IL) outside of the library and information science (LIS) field is important to the success of IL instruction, learning, and research. The development and major updates of several information literacy documents in the past decade evidence the changing landscape of IL research, but how these changes have impacted other disciplines remains to be seen. To aid in this discussion, this article examines a wide range of higher education teaching journals to expand on Badke's (2011) work, "Why Information Literacy is Invisible." Specifically, this study examines articles published in 30 general higher education and 32 disciplinary higher education journals between 2012 and 2022. Although there is a notable increase in the discussion of IL within higher education and non-LIS disciplines journals, there is a gap in references to the five major information literacy documents, supporting Badke's notion that some LIS work remains underrepresented in the broader academic literature.

This study examined how science identity and positive educational outcomes relate to student trainees' decision to pursue a research career in health-related sciences, within the context of a two-year research training program that prepares diverse undergraduate students for a research career. In analyses using the evaluation data, science identity and one of the positive educational outcomes significantly predicted trainees' decision to pursue a research career in biomedical and behavioral sciences. In general, students with stronger science identity and interest in pursuing research in academia exhibited a firmer decision to pursue a research career in sciences. In a separate analysis that examined the associations between the trainees' decision to pursue a health-related research career and their underrepresented minority identities, gender, and disciplinary track, results revealed that: (1) the interaction between trainees' disciplinary track (i.e., biomedical vs. behavioral sciences) and their total number of underrepresented minority status was associated with their decision to pursue a research career, but (2) the gender x disciplinary track interaction was not. Emphasizing the need for supporting diverse undergraduate trainees to solidify their science identity and prepare them for a research career in academia, we discuss implications of our findings for research training programs with similar aims.

Abstract Background Segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes have recently been identified in mice. Segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes are thought to originate from the bone marrow and induce fibrosis in the drug-injured lung. The Lyc6c− murine monocyte subset is the counterpart to human CD14−CD16++ non-classical monocytes; however, the human counterpart to murine segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes has not yet been identified. Primary myelofibrosis is a well-known disease of progressive marrow fibrosis, and atypical megakaryocytes are thought to be closely related to fibrosis in primary myelofibrosis bone marrow. However, recently, monocytes have been reported to play an important role in marrow fibrosis in primary myelofibrosis. We speculated that, if there is a human counterpart to murine segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes, it would present the same markers as murine segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes, such as CD14−CD16+ macrophage-1 antigen (CD11b/CD18 complex)+, MSR1+, and CEACAM1+, and it might exist in the bone marrow of patients with primary myelofibrosis. Case presentation A 74-year-old Japanese male visited our hospital for clinical follow-up after total prostatectomy for prostatic cancer. Anemia, thrombocytosis, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase were suddenly observed in a periodic examination. CALR mutation type 2 (p.K385fs*47) was observed. The histological features of the patient’s bone marrow were consistent with fibrotic primary myelofibrosis. We immunohistochemically studied the bone marrow in an attempt to identify a human counterpart to murine segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes. We detected a few CD16+MSR1+CEACAM1+ cells, but not CD14+MSR1+CEACAM1+ cells, by triple immunostaining. The patient is in a good condition and does not require treatment for primary myelofibrosis. Conclusion There is a possibility that human segregated-nucleus-containing atypical monocytes exist in the bone marrow of primary myelofibrosis patients and might be related to marrow fibrosis.

Purpose Stress urinary incontinence is a postoperative complication occurring in patients with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Although the 1-hour pad test measures the degree of urinary incontinence qualitatively and quantitatively, some elderly women undergoing POP surgery do not have the daily activities of living to perform the pad test. Therefore, we examined whether the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire Short Form (ICIQ-SF) could be used as an alternative tool for pad tests. Methods We retrospectively evaluated 132 patients with POP. In our hospital, 57 patients were treated by laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSC), whereas 75 were treated by transvaginal mesh surgery (TVM). We measured the changes in symptoms preand postoperatively using the ICIQ-SF and 1-hour pad weight testing, and investigated the correlation between the total plus component question scores of the ICIQ-SF and 1-hour pad weight. Results The preoperative ICIQ total scores in all patients decreased significantly as the amount of leakage on the 1-hour pad weight decreased. The component question scores also decreased significantly with decreasing levels of 1-hour pad weight. The LSC and TVM groups had decreased ICIQ-SF total and component question scores as pad weight decreased. At 12 months postoperatively, the ICIQ total scores in all patients significantly declined as the amount of leakage on the 1-hour pad weight decreased. In the LSC group, the ICIQ-SF total and component question scores also decreased with decreased pad weight, but the differences were not always significant between ICIQ scores and pad weight. In the TVM group, the ICIQ-SF total and component question scores also significantly decreased as the pad weight decreased. Conclusions The ICIQ-SF could be an appropriate substitute for the 1-hour pad weight testing in predicting the severity of urinary incontinence. In the future, we hope to predict the level of urine leakage based on the ICIQ-SF score.

Abstract The incidence of duodenal tumors (DTs) is increasing. However, the mechanisms underlying its development remain unclear. Environmental factors, including the microbiome and bile acids (BAs), are believed to influence tumor development. Therefore, we conducted a single-center, prospective, observational study to investigate the potential differences between patients with DTs and healthy controls (HCs) based on these factors. In addition, the BAs in the duodenal fluid were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. We recruited 41 patients and performed 16S rRNA-seq. There was no difference in the observed ASVs or PCoA plot of Bray–Curtis dissimilarity between the DTs and HCs. The lithocholic acid concentration was significantly lower in the DT group than in the control group. The ratio of CDCA to LCA was significantly higher in patients with DTs. No significant differences in microbiota were observed between DTs and HCs. In patients with DTs, the lithocholic acid concentration in duodenal was significantly lower than in HCs.

Appendicularians are planktonic tunicates abundant all over the world. Currently, only two complete annotated mitochondrial genome assemblies are available for appendicularians, both for cryptic species of Oikopleura dioica. This underrepresentation of available appendicularian mitochondrial genomes limits environmental DNA sequencing (eDNA) studies that rely on mitochondrial markers as a taxonomic barcode. We report the complete mitochondrial genome assembly and annotation of an unknown appendicularian species isolated from the Amami Oshima island, Kagoshima prefecture, Japan, that has significant sequence difference with other currently available assemblies and will serve as a useful resource for ecological studies and further mitochondrial studies of appendicularians.

Curettage is recommended for the treatment of Campanacci stages 1–2 giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) in the extremities, pelvis, sacrum, and spine, without preoperative denosumab treatment. In the distal femur, bone chips and plate fixation are utilized to reduce damage to the subchondral bone and prevent pathological fracture, respectively. For local recurrence, re-curettage may be utilized when feasible. En bloc resection is an option for very aggressive Campanacci stage 3 GCTB in the extremities, pelvis, sacrum, and spine, combined with 1–3 doses of preoperative denosumab treatment. Denosumab monotherapy once every 3 months is currently the standard strategy for inoperable patients and those with metastatic GCTB. However, in case of tumor growth, a possible malignant transformation should be considered. Zoledronic acid appears to be as effective as denosumab; nevertheless, it is a more cost-effective option. Therefore, zoledronic acid may be an alternative treatment option, particularly in developing countries. Surgery is the mainstay treatment for malignant GCTB.

Abstract While the short-term relationship between clouds and aerosols is well known, no adequate data is available to verify the longer-term, annual to decadal, relationship. It is important to quantify the aerosol–cloud interaction (ACI) for mitigating uncertainty in climate prediction. Here the long-term ACI over the mid-to-high latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere was analyzed by using seasonally-resolved ion fluxes reconstructed from a southeastern Greenland ice core (SE-Dome ice core) as aerosol proxies, and satellite-based summer cloud amount between 1982 and 2014. As a result, SO4 2− flux in the ice core shows significant positive correlation with total cloud amounts ( $${CC}_{T}$$ CC T ) and cloud droplet concentration ( $${N}_{d}$$ N d ) in the summer over the southeastern Greenland Sea, implying that the sulfate aerosols may contribute to the variability of $${CC}_{T}$$ CC T via microphysical cloud processes. Significant positive correlations are persistent even under the constrained conditions when cloud formation factors such as relative humidity, air temperature at cloud height, and summer North Atlantic Oscillation are limited within ± 1σ variability. Hence sulfate aerosols should control the interannual variability of summer $${CC}_{T}$$ CC T In terms of decadal changes, $${CC}_{T}$$ CC T was approximately 3–5% higher in the 1960s–1970s than in the 1990s–2000s, which can be explained by changes in the, $${{{\text{SO}}}_{4}}^{2-}$$ SO 4 2 - flux preserved in the SE-Dome ice core.

Abstract Acute exacerbation of idiopathic interstitial pneumonias (AE‐IIPs) is a disease associated with a poor prognosis in patients with IIPs. However, the specific characteristics of fluorine‐18 2‐fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐d‐glucose (18F‐FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging for AE‐IIPs remain unclear. Herein, we present the case of a patient with lung cancer combined with IIPs who underwent 18F‐FDG PET/CT at the early onset of AE‐IIPs. The scan, conducted 18 days post‐bronchoscopy for lung cancer evaluation, revealed AE‐IIPs before the onset of respiratory failure. New ground‐glass opacities appeared, accompanied by significant 18F‐FDG accumulation extending beyond these regions. To the best of our knowledge, this report represents the first assessment of 18F‐FDG PET/CT images at the early onset of AE‐IIPs before respiratory failure in humans. The observed features in this PET image could potentially contribute to our understanding of the pathophysiology of AE‐IIPs.

Introduction Reducing neonatal deaths in premature infants in low- and middle-income countries is key to reducing global neonatal mortality. International neonatal networks, along with patient registries of premature infants, have contributed to improving the quality of neonatal care; however, the involvement of low-to-middle-income countries was limited. This project aims to form an international collaboration among neonatal networks in Asia (AsianNeo), including low-, middle- and high-income countries (or regions). Specifically, it aims to determine outcomes in sick newborn infants, especially very low birth weight (VLBW) infants or very preterm infants, with a view to improving the quality of care for such infants.Methods and analysis Currently, AsianNeo comprises nine neonatal networks from Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan and Thailand. AsianNeo will undertake the following four studies: (1) institutional questionnaire surveys investigating neonatal intensive care unit resources and the clinical management of sick newborn infants, with a focus on VLBW infants (nine countries/regions); (2) a retrospective cohort study to describe and compare the outcomes of VLBW infants among Asian countries and regions (four countries/regions); (3) a prospective cohort study to develop the AsianNeo registry of VLBW infants (six countries/regions); and (4) implementation and evaluation of educational and quality improvement projects in AsianNeo countries and regions (nine countries/regions).Ethics and dissemination The study protocol was approved by the Research Ethics Board of the National Center for Child Health and Development, Tokyo, Japan (reference number 2020–244, 2022–156). The study findings will be disseminated through educational programmes, quality improvement activities, conference presentations and medical journal publications.

Measurements of specific heat and magnetization in single crystals were used to map out the magnetic phase diagram of Gd1−xErxB4 (x = 0.2 and 0.4) solid solutions along the c-axis. While GdB4 orders antiferromagnetically (AF) at 41.7 K, with the easy plane of magnetization oriented perpendicularly to the c-axis, ErB4 displays AF ordering below 15.4 K, with the easy axis along c. Therefore, in solid solutions, the competition between the different spin anisotropies, as well as frustration, lead to a complex spin configuration. These measurements reveal that a 40% substitution of Er for Gd is sufficient for generating a phase diagram similar to the one for the ErB4 system, characterized by the occurrence of plateau phases and other exotic features attributed to the interplay of competing magnetic anisotropies.

Abstract It is unclear which factor Xa (FXa) inhibitors are associated with higher bleeding risk in patients with respiratory diseases, and there are no studies on the association between prothrombin time–international normalized ratio (PT–INR) and bleeding risk. We conducted a retrospective cohort study comparing 1-year-outcomes and PT–INR between patients with respiratory diseases treated with rivaroxaban (R group, n = 82) or edoxaban (E group, n = 138) for atrial fibrillation or venous thromboembolism from 2013 to 2021. The most frequent event of all bleeding discontinuations was respiratory bleeding in both groups (7.3 and 4.3%, respectively). The cumulative incidence of bleeding discontinuation was significantly higher in the R group (25.6%) than in the E group (14.4%) (hazard ratio [HR], 2.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13–4.64; P = 0.023). Abstract Background Long tubular duplication is a rare congenital intestinal disease, that can lead to emergency situations marked by massive hemorrhage. However, preoperative diagnosis and surgical treatment are challenging. This report presents preoperative images and details a surgical procedure for long tubular intestinal duplications with massive hemorrhage. Case presentation A 3-year-old boy presented to the emergency department with melena. Despite undergoing a Tc-99m pertechnetate scintigraphy one year prior, which revealed nonspecific findings with enhancement of some parts of the intestine, enhanced abdominal CT revealed an edematous small intestine with luminal extravasation. The patient received a transfusion of red blood cells; however, his hemoglobin level did not improve. Arterial angiography and double-balloon endoscopy revealed no remarkable findings. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a long tubular duplication in half of the small intestine. Utilizing the Wrenn procedure, we successfully removed all duplicate mucosa. Pathological findings showed that almost all duplications contained gastric mucosa and revealed an ulcer with a ruptured arterial vessel. His symptoms were resolved, and the hemoglobin level stabilized. At 2 months postoperatively, no surgical complications were present. Conclusions Effective management of long tubular duplications with massive hemorrhage involves timely application of the Wrenn procedure. Recognition of specific imaging findings is crucial to prompt exploratory laparotomy, ensuring optimal outcomes and preventing delays in treatment.

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma (DDCS) is a high-grade subtype of chondrosarcoma with the bimorphic histological appearance of a conventional chondrosarcoma component with abrupt transition to a high-grade, non-cartilaginous sarcoma. DDCS can be radiographically divided into central and peripheral types. Wide resection is currently the main therapeutic option for localized DDCS. Moreover, the effectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy remains controversial. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of available evidence to evaluate the effect of adjuvant chemotherapy on localized DDCS. The purpose was to compare the 5-year survival rate among patients treated with surgery plus adjuvant chemotherapy or surgery alone for localized DDCS. The search was conducted in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) databases. Of the 217 studies shortlisted, 11 retrospective non-randomized studies (comprising 556 patients with localized DDCS) were selected. The 5-year survival rates were similar between the two treatment groups (28.2% (51/181) vs. 24.0% (90/375), respectively). The overall pooled odds ratio was 1.25 (95% confidence interval: 0.80–1.94; p = 0.324), and heterogeneity I2 was 2%. However, when limited to peripheral DDCS, adjuvant chemotherapy was associated with prolonged survival (p = 0.03). Due to the paucity of included studies and the absence of prospective comparative studies, no conclusions can be drawn regarding the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of adjuvant chemotherapy for localized DDCS.

Abstract The development of artificial spider silk with properties similar to native silk has been a challenging task in materials science. In this study, we use a microfluidic device to create continuous fibers based on recombinant MaSp2 spidroin. The strategy incorporates ion-induced liquid-liquid phase separation, pH-driven fibrillation, and shear-dependent induction of β-sheet formation. We find that a threshold shear stress of approximately 72 Pa is required for fiber formation, and that β-sheet formation is dependent on the presence of polyalanine blocks in the repetitive sequence. The MaSp2 fiber formed has a β-sheet content (29.2%) comparable to that of native dragline with a shear stress requirement of 111 Pa. Interestingly, the polyalanine blocks have limited influence on the occurrence of liquid-liquid phase separation and hierarchical structure. These results offer insights into the shear-induced crystallization and sequence-structure relationship of spider silk and have significant implications for the rational design of artificially spun fibers.
