The Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE), administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES), is a nationally normed assessment of examinees' understanding of knowledge gained during undergraduate studies in engineering. Using a database of by-name pass/fail performance inclusive of four-years of information (2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022) this study investigated if a positive correlation exists between pass/fail performance and performance within specific electives. Statistical analysis was performed to determine the significance of any relationships that were found. Discussion is presented to address the potential for differences in causation and correlation between variables. This study was conducted to help the civil engineering program at a specific academic institution to evaluate if particular elective courses result in better preparation for students to pass the FEE. This study will help inform curricular changes that are under consideration and improve student advising. The results of this study will be of interest to the faculty and administrators at other civil engineering programs as they evaluate changes to their own curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding why students select their intended major can help faculty to motivate and retain those students in a program of study. Ensuring that students remain motivated by their educational program greatly increases the likelihood that they will successfully complete the major. The study presented within this paper used a course-generated student essay that reflects on why students at a particular academic institution selected the civil engineering major. The essay assignment has been used over multiple course administrations during a five-year period. Essays were reviewed for reference to a series of nine specific motivations for selecting the academic Students at the United States Military Academy (West Point) select their academic major during the spring of their first year. The collected data has been evaluated to look for trends in major selection reasoning, as well as differences between genders. This study will be of interest to faculty and administrators with a desire to understand the motivation behind their students' major selection.
