Abstract

This paper focuses on the opportunities and the ethical and societal risks posed by advanced AI assistants. We define advanced AI assistants as artificial agents with natural language interfaces, whose function is to plan and execute sequences of actions on behalf of a user, across one or more domains, in line with the user's expectations. The paper starts by considering the technology itself, providing an overview of AI assistants, their technical foundations and potential range of applications. It then explores questions around AI value alignment, well-being, safety and malicious uses. Extending the circle of inquiry further, we next consider the relationship between advanced AI assistants and individual users in more detail, exploring topics such as manipulation and persuasion, anthropomorphism, appropriate relationships, trust and privacy. With this analysis in place, we consider the deployment of advanced assistants at a societal scale, focusing on cooperation, equity and access, misinformation, economic impact, the environment and how best to evaluate advanced AI assistants. Finally, we conclude by providing a range of recommendations for researchers, developers, policymakers and public stakeholders.

Two years on from the initial release of AlphaFold2 we have seen its widespread adoption as a structure prediction tool. Here we discuss some of the latest work based on AlphaFold2, with a particular focus on its use within the structural biology community. This encompasses use cases like speeding up structure determination itself, enabling new computational studies, and building new tools and workflows. Abstract

Generative AI systems produce a range of risks. To ensure the safety of generative AI systems, these risks must be evaluated. In this paper, we make two main contributions toward establishing such evaluations. First, we propose a three-layered framework that takes a structured, sociotechnical approach to evaluating these risks. This framework encompasses capability evaluations, which are the main current approach to safety evaluation. It then reaches further by building on system safety principles, particularly the insight that context determines whether a given capability may cause harm. To account for relevant context, our framework adds human interaction and systemic impacts as additional layers of evaluation. Second, we survey the current state of safety evaluation of generative AI systems and create a repository of existing evaluations. Three salient evaluation gaps emerge from this analysis. We propose ways forward to closing these gaps, outlining practical steps as well as roles and responsibilities for different actors. 4. The Privatization of AI Research(-ers): Causes and Potential Consequences -- From university-industry interaction to public research brain-drain?

Abstract

The private sector is playing an increasingly important role in basic Artificial Intelligence (AI) R&D. This phenomenon, which is reflected in the perception of a brain drain of researchers from academia to industry, is raising concerns about a privatisation of AI research which could constrain its societal benefits. We contribute to the evidence base by quantifying transition flows between industry and academia and studying its drivers and potential consequences. We find a growing net flow of researchers from academia to industry, particularly from elite institutions into technology companies such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook. Our survival regression analysis reveals that researchers working in the field of deep learning as well as those with higher average impact are more likely to transition into industry. A difference-in-differences analysis of the effect of switching into industry on a researcher's influence proxied by citations indicates that an initial increase in impact declines as researchers spend more time in industry. This points at a privatisation of AI knowledge compared to a counterfactual where those high-impact researchers had remained in academia. Our findings highlight the importance of strengthening the public AI research sphere in order to ensure that the future of this powerful technology is not dominated by private interests.

6. A narrowing of AI research?

Abstract

The arrival of deep learning techniques able to infer patterns from large datasets has dramatically improved the performance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. Deep learning's rapid development and adoption, in great part led by large technology companies, has however created concerns about a premature narrowing in the technological trajectory of AI research despite its weaknesses, which include lack of robustness, high environmental costs, and potentially unfair outcomes. We seek to improve the evidence base with a semantic analysis of AI research in arXiv, a popular pre-prints database. We study the evolution of the thematic diversity of AI research, compare the thematic diversity of AI research in academia and the private sector and measure the influence of private companies in AI research through the citations they receive and their collaborations with other institutions. Our results suggest that diversity in AI research has stagnated in recent years, and that AI research involving the private sector tends to be less diverse and more influential than research in academia. We also find that private sector AI researchers tend to specialise in data-hungry and computationally intensive deep learning methods at the expense of research involving other AI methods, research that considers the societal and ethical implications of AI, and applications in sectors like health. Abstract

BackgroundThe complex process of liver graft assessment is one point for improvement in liver transplantation. The main objective of this study is to develop a tool that supports the surgeon who is responsible for liver donation in the decision-making process whether to accept a graft or not using the initial variables available to it.Material and methodLiver graft samples candidate for liver transplantation after donor brain death were studied. All of them were evaluated “in situ” for transplantation, and those discarded after the “in situ” evaluation were considered as no transplantable liver grafts, while those grafts transplanted after “in situ” evaluation were considered as transplantable liver grafts. First, a single-center, retrospective and cohort study identifying the risk factors associated with the no transplantable group was performed. Then, a prediction model decision support system based on machine learning, and using a tree ensemble boosting classifier that is capable of helping to decide whether to accept or decline a donor liver graft, was developed.ResultsA total of 350 liver grafts that were evaluated for liver transplantation were studied. 11. Deep learning, deep change? Mapping the development of the Artificial Intelligence General Purpose Technology

Abstract

General Purpose Technologies (GPTs) that can be applied in many industries are an important driver of economic growth and national and regional competitiveness. In spite of this, the geography of their development and diffusion has not received significant attention in the literature. We address this with an analysis of Deep Learning (DL), a core technique in Artificial Intelligence (AI) increasingly being recognized as the latest GPT. We identify DL papers in a novel dataset from ArXiv, a popular preprints website, and use CrunchBase, a technology business directory to measure industrial capabilities related to it. After showing that DL conforms with the definition of a GPT, having experienced rapid growth and diffusion into new fields where it has generated an impact, we describe changes in its geography. Our analysis shows China's rise in AI rankings and relative decline in several European countries. We also find that initial volatility in the geography of DL has been followed by consolidation, suggesting that the window of opportunity for new entrants might be closing down as new DL research hubs become dominant. Finally, we study the regional drivers of DL clustering. We find that competitive DL clusters tend to be based in regions combining research and industrial activities related to it. This could be because GPT developers and adopters located close to each other can collaborate and share knowledge more easily, thus overcoming coordination failures in GPT deployment. We report a molecular characterization of human multidrug-resistant M. bovis isolates and three bovine isolates that share the spoligotyping profile. The analysis of the direct repeat region showed that both groups differed in the presence of spacers not included in the current membrane. They were also distinguished by two out of the nine mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit variable-number tandem repeat loci tested, indicating that the human infection was not acquired from the cattle from which isolates were obtained. To avoid problems associated with characterization of extremely slow growth strains, PCR-based techniques that divide the M. a. paratuberculosis strains in two main groups (cattle or Type II, and sheep or Types I/III) can be performed. The objectives of this study were to characterize the M. a. paratuberculosis isolates identified by different PCR-based tests (IS1311-PCR and restriction endonuclease analysis, PCR test based on a DNA sequence difference, and a PCR aimed at three Type I-specific loci), and to determine the clinical and epidemiological implications of Types I/III M. a. paratuberculosis strains in livestock. One hundred and fifty-eight M. a. paratuberculosis strains from domestic ruminants were analyzed. One hundred and six M. a. paratuberculosis isolates (61 from goats and 45 from cattle) were classified as Type II strains; and 52 (29 from cows, 20 from goats, and three from sheep) were included in the Types I/III. The Types I/III M. a. paratuberculosis strains were associated to Spanish native breeds. The majority of these animals had not been in direct or indirect contact with sheep flocks infected with M. a. paratuberculosis. In this study, we have tested four solid media (Herrold's egg yolk medium [HEYM] with sodium pyruvate and mycobactin [HEYMm-SP], HEYM with mycobactin and without sodium pyruvate [HEYMm], Middlebrook 7H11 with mycobactin [Mm], and Löwenstein-Jensen with mycobactin [LJm]) for isolation of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis strains in 319 tissue samples from cattle herds and goat flocks. We have shown that each of the two main groups of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis (type II and type I/III) has different requirements for growth in the culture media studied. The recommended solid media for isolation of type I/III strains are LJm and Mm, since the combination of both media allowed the recovery of all these strains. The most widespread culture medium, HEYM, is not suitable for the isolation of this group of M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis strains. Regarding the type II strains, HEYMm-SP was the medium where more strains were isolated, but the other three media are also needed in order to recover all type II strains. The incubation period is also related to the strain type. Abstract

Industry 4.0 is the new industrial stage that is committed to greater automation, connectivity and globalization. The interrelation between the different areas has penetrated the industrial world thanks to the Internet of things and the world of Big Data. This amount of information available in plants is growing increasingly, also aided by the network computing services offered by cloud computing or edge computing. That is why it’s necessary to carry out complex fusion methods and data analysis using Machine Learning techniques to address specific industrial requirements and needs. The central challenge of industry 4.0 from the perspective of data science is to predict the history within the monitored processes, providing as much information as possible, avoiding them and stave off severe economic losses. This article will show a review of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques such as Machine Learning (ML) immersed in multi-agent systems (MAS) in Industry 4.0. For this, a bibliographic search has been carried out in databases recognized as Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus or Springer, filtering the investigations from 2018 to the actually. The article concludes by pointing out the possible future lines and the importance of the transition towards the implementation of new technologies for the competitiveness of factories.

Abstract

One of the many areas in which artificial intelligence (AI) techniques are used is the development of systems for the recognition of vital emotions to control human health and safety. This study used biometric sensors in a multimodal approach to capture signals in the recognition of stressful situations. The great advances in technology have allowed the development of portable devices capable of monitoring different physiological measures in an inexpensive, non-invasive, and efficient manner. Virtual reality (VR) has evolved to achieve a realistic immersive experience in different contexts. The combination of AI, signal acquisition devices, and VR makes it possible to generate useful knowledge even in challenging situations in daily life, such as when driving. The main goal of this work is to combine the use of sensors and the possibilities offered by VR for the creation of a system for recognizing stress during different driving situations in a vehicle. We investigated the feasibility of detecting stress in individuals using physiological signals collected using a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor incorporated into a commonly used wristwatch. We developed an immersive environment based on VR to simulate experimental situations and collect information on the user’s reactions through the detection of physiological signals. Data collected through sensors in the VR simulations are taken as input to several models previously trained by machine learning (ML) algorithms to obtain a system that performs driver stress detection and high-precision classification in real time.

Abstract

Teaching statistics course Applied Psychology, was based on different teaching models that incorporate active teaching methodologies. In this experience have combined approaches that prioritize the use of ICT with other where evaluation becomes an element of learning. This has involved the use of virtual platforms to support teaching that facilitate learning and activities where no face-to-face are combined. The design of the components of the course is inspired by the dimensions proposed by Carless (2003) model. This model uses evaluation as a learning element. The development of this experience has shown how the didactic proposal has been positively interpreted by students. Students recognized that they had to learn and deeply understand the basic concepts of the subject, so that they can teach and assess their peers.

Abstract

Agriculture is a niche market for migrant workers, and one of the sectors with the highest rates of accidents, deaths and work-related health problems. To review and synthesize existing literature on the health conditions of international migrant agricultural workers in Europe. A scoping review of scientific literature published until March 2021 was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, WoS and OpenGrey, following ArkseyO'Malley's theoretical framework where 5894 references were retrieved and screened. Nineteen articles were selected, reviewed and synthetized. The country with the highest number of studies published (n = 9) was Spain. The design of the studies was mainly cross-sectional (n = 13). The main health problems identified were: lower back pain and other musculoskeletal problems, dermatitis, gastrointestinal and respiratory infections, anxiety, stress, depression and barriers to access healthcare services. Migrant agricultural workers are a neglected population with conditions of vulnerability and precariousness, physical and mental health problems and poor working conditions. Interventions to reduce or eliminate language, cultural and administrative barriers to ensure access to healthcare services are needed, as well as designing a common European framework to protect the rights of migrant agricultural workers and their families.

Abstract

Introducción. El Espacio Europeo de Educación Superior (EEES) viene apoyando la relevancia de situar la orientación vocacional en un lugar destacado en el marco de la educación universitaria. Para que esta orientación pueda ser planificada adecuadamente necesitamos conocer sus posibles contenidos evaluando los intereses vocacionales de los alumnos de cada centro. El objetivo del presente trabajo consistió en analizar los indicadores de la conducta vocacional de los estudiantes universitarios de Psicología, su evolución y su comparación con datos de otras poblaciones universitarias. Metodología. Los participantes fueron 329 alumnos de Psicología de la USAL (248 de segundo curso y 81 de quinto) que respondieron al Cuestionario de Biodatos Universitarios (Rocabert, 2005). En todos los casos se partió de un nivel de significación de ?= 0,05 llevándose a cabo pruebas de comparación de muestras utilizando las técnicas U de Mann-Whitney y Análisis de Contingencia. Resultados. Se detectaron diferencias significativas entre los alumnos de segundo y de quinto así como con la población universitaria general recogida por Rocabert, Descals y Gómez (2007). En general, los alumnos de Psicología inician sus estudios con un elevado interés y motivación, tomando decisiones académicas en función de la especialidad a la que se quieren dedicar. Sin embargo, en los últimos cursos detectamos una menor satisfacción por los estudios, más dificultades a la hora de decidir qué quieren hacer y mayor demanda de información para poder elegir la opción que más les conviene. Conclusiones. A pesar de la elevada motivación de los estudiantes de Psicología, a medida que su incorporación al mundo laboral es más cercana, requieren más orientación para tomar decisiones relacionadas con la especialización o el mundo profesional.

45. Characterising the freshwater content entering the Beaufort Gyre using SMOS surface salinity and optical data

Abstract

The liquid freshwater content of the Beaufort Gyre, the largest Arctic Ocean freshwater reservoir, has increased by 40% in the last two decades (Solomon et al. 2021). The global thermohaline circulation and climate depend on the export of liquid freshwater from the Arctic Ocean. By freshening the upper sub-polar North Atlantic, the excess freshwater can impact the large-scale ocean circulation (Zhang et al. 2021). Major Arctic rivers, such as the Mackenzie, play a crucial role in the Arctic's freshwater circulation. However, the precise impact of any increase in Arctic freshwater runoff remains unclear due to the scarcity of measurements in the region. Thanks to dedicated satellite missions, we can now gain access to polar regions and monitor their state and changes. In this work, we used the new SMOS capability to accurately measure the Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) in the Arctic Ocean in order to monitor the freshwater entering the Beaufort Gyre. We used the relationship between optical data and SSS to assess the freshened surface layer and thus calculated the freshwater content of the freshened surface layer. To evaluate the freshened surface layer, we exploited the relationship between the absorption coefficient of dissolved organic materials at 443 nm and SSS, and then combine it with the TOPAZ model output to compute the freshwater content of the freshened surface layer. The SSS product used is the Arctic SMOS SSS product BEC v.31, generated as part of the ESA-funded ARCTIC+ SSS ITT project, in conjunction with the TOPAZ model. To evaluate the freshened surface layer, we exploited the relationship between the absorption coefficient of dissolved organic materials at 443 nm and SSS. We used SMOS Arctic+ SSS together with the TOPAZ model to compute the freshwater content of the freshened surface layer.
