The objective of this work was to design a mechanical prosthesis made of a polymer matrix composite material (epoxy resin) with laminated carbon fiber reinforcement (prepreg). The design was based on the patient’s current condition in terms of the degree of amputation (below-elbow amputation) and the simplified idealization of the possible tensional stress of the component under service conditions. The design was done using the SolidWorks CAD program. Personalized library of composite sheet material was created by manually inputting material parameters and their respective orientations. These composite material properties were computed by means of eLamX software based on the micromechanical model of Chamis. Finally, to ensure the proper prosthesis ́performance, a simulation of its mechanical behavior under service conditions was performed. Les piles de combustible d'òxid sòlid (Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, SOFCs) són dispositius electroquímics que converteixen l'hidrogen en energia directament. Posseeixen tres components: un ànode de níquel i circona estabilitzada amb ítria (Ni-YSZ), un electròlit de YSZ i un càtode compost d'una perovskita de cobalt-ferrita. A més de presentar un bon rendiment electroquímic, les SOFCs han de presentar un bon comportament mecànic. L'objectiu d'aquest treball és l'estudi micromecànic, mitjançant la tècnica d'indentació instrumentada, de noves formulacions de Ni-YSZ usades com a ànode i material suport a les SOFCs, per determinar-ne la integritat mecànica. S'ha estudiat l'estabilitat mecànica de dues cel·les, una nova i una usada durant 20.500 h, mitjançant l'assaig de duresa Vickers. S'han obtingut els valors de duresa de l'ànode i càtode de totes dues cel·les i s'han comparat amb els valors aconseguits mitjançant la nanoindentació. Excepte pels valors de l'ànode usat, els valors obtinguts per tots dos mètodes s'han assemblat. Magnesium and its alloys have been investigated as materials for biomedical applications for several years. It can be explained by magnesium’s unique combination of their appropriate mechanical properties and their good biocompatibility. The main advantage of magnesium over other used metals is its ability to biodegrade, it can be dissolved in physiological environment and be used as a biodegradable material. The main limitation is its high corrosion rates and inhomogeneous corrosion. Mechanical and corrosion properties are determined by the material composition, depending on appropriate alloying, such as the use of rare earth elements, as well as surface treatments. In this thesis, the mechanical and corrosion properties of a cast magnesium alloy WE43 for biomedical application are being studied in comparison to AM50 as a reference material. The aim is to apply an appropriate vibratory grinding treatment and to characterize the surfaces after the treatment. After the vibratory grinding treatment, the samples were examined using a confocal laser microscope to analyse the morphology and roughness of the treated surfaces. Following that, tensile and microhardness tests were performed to probe the mechanical properties, electrochemical corrosion studies to determine the corrosion properties, and an optical microscope was used to study the microstructure on cross-sections. Results show that the applied surface treatment improved the surface roughness. An enhancement in the mechanical properties related to their elastic behaviour was found in the samples. After the vibratory grinding treatment, a black layer appeared on the materials, the reason for this is unknown. The surface of 301LN stainless steel samples was modified using a nanosecond pulsed laser. Two main laser parameters such as intensity (I) and scanning speed (S) were varied to evaluate their influence on the modified surface properties. Characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vickers hardness testing were utilized to evaluate the microstructure and properties of the treated zone. Results indicate that laser surface modification can significantly enhance the surface hardness of stainless steel. This study highlights the potential of laser surface modification as a viable method for improving the hardness properties of stainless steel and provides guidance for identifying the optimal laser parameters for specific applications.

L'ànode de Ni-YSZ és un dels tres components principals de les cel·les de combustible d'òxid sòlid (SOFC). Recentment, el mecanitzat làser ha aconseguit ampliar l'àrea de contacte de les interfícies elèctrode/electròlit, millorant el rendiment global de les SOFC. No obstant això, el làser pot fer malbé la microestructura del material durant el tractament. Per aquest motiu, l’objectiu d’aquest projecte és estudiar els efectes del tractament làser sobre compostos de NiO-YSZ per a SOFCs. Es van optimitzar els paràmetres de treball d'un làser Nd:YAG per obtenir pistes làser amb una profunditat de 1 µm. Per tal d'analitzar els efectes del tractament amb làser sobre la composició i la microestructura del material, es van utilitzar tècniques complementàries com la difracció de raigs X (DRX), l'espectroscòpia Raman i la microscòpia electrònica d'escombrada (SEM). A més, es van determinar les propietats mecàniques de les superfícies tractades amb làser mitjançant la tècnica de nanoindentació. Els resultats dels tests d'espectroscòpia Raman i DRX van mostrar que el tractament amb làser no va canviar significativament la composició del material. En canvi, la microestructura, analitzada mitjançant SEM, va ser significativament influenciada pel tractament amb làser, pel fet que la porositat va disminuir significativament. Nanoindentation tests evidenced that, at low indentation depths, both the hardness and the Young's modulus of laser treated surfaces are lower than untreated surfaces. This decrease in mechanical properties is due to defects such as micro-cracks that have weakened the material surface. En aquest Treball Final de Grau es presenta l’estudi de mobilitat (posicions), l’anàlisi cinemàtica ( velocitats i acceleracions) i anàlisi dinàmica (forces i moments i càlcul de pèrdues d’energia per fricció) d’un mecanisme de pistó-biela-manovella en totes les possibles posicions que pot adoptar i també es mostra un anàlisi de sensibilitat respecte l’energia consumida. Per al cas planteja es comprova que: i) duplicar la velocitat angular d’entrada, triplica les pèrdues per fricció; ii) no lubricar els coixinets, augmenta per set les pèrdues per fricció. Es plantegen les equacions cinemàtiques mitjançant el mètode de tancament de llaços i les equacions de la dinàmica amb els teoremes vectorials. Aquestes equacions s’han programat i resolt amb Excel. Per validar els resultats obtinguts s’han comparat els resultats amb el mòdul de Simulació de mecanismes del programa de CAD Solidworks i amb el programa de simulació de mecanismes PAM. La coincidència amb els resultats dinàmics s’ha aconseguit amb el PAM i a nivell de SolidWorks només a nivell de la cinemàtica., This Final Thesis presents the mobility study (positions), the kinematic analysis (velocities and accelerations) and dynamic analysis (forces and moments and calculation of frictional energy losses) of a rod-piston-crank mechanism in all the possible positions it can adopt and also shows an analysis of sensitivity on how the energy consumed gets affected. For this case, the changes made are: 1) doubling the angular input speed, triples the frictional stresses; 2) not lubricating the bearings, increases by seven times the frictional stresses. The kinematic equations are proposed by means of the method of loop tanning and the equations of the dynamics with the vectorial theorems. These equations have been programmed and solved with Excel. To validate the obtained results, the results have been compared with the Mechanism Simulation module of the CAD program Solidworks and with the Mechanism Simulation Program PAM. The coincidence with the dynamic results has been achieved with PAM and with SolidWorks only the kinematics results.

Aquest projecte té com a objectiu principal, l'estudi de la influència del percentatge de densitat i l'orientació sobre el comportament mecànic de provetes fabricades mitjançant la tècnica d'impressió MEX (Extrusió de Material) i assajades a tracció, compostes del material Timberfill de Fillamentum. Per fer-ho, s'estudien 4 respostes mecàniques que són el mòdul de Young, el límit elàstic, la tensió màxima i la deformació a la tensió màxima. Per a la realització de la metrologia de les provetes s'ha seguit la norma ASTM D638. Un cop imprimides les provetes, seguint un DoE (Disseny d'experiments) factorial complet, s'han sotmès a un assaig a tracció, on posteriorment s'han processat les dades per caracteritzar mecànicament el Timberfill. A més, s'ha realitzat un ANOVA (Anàlisi de Variança) per estudiar estadísticament les influències dels paràmetres de fabricació als resultats obtinguts. D'aquesta manera, s'ha obtingut la millor combinació de paràmetres per al material Timberfill per obtenir les millors propietats a tracció. Per acabar, s'ha realitzat un estudi de la densitat real respecte la densitat teòrica de les provetes., La realización de este proyecto tiene como objetivo principal, el estudio de la influencia del porcentaje de densidad y la orientación sobre el comportamiento mecánico de probetas fabricadas mediante la técnica de impresión MEX (Extrusión de Material) y ensayadas a tracción, compuestas del material Timberfill de Fillamentum. De esta manera, se ha obtenido la mejor combinación de parámetros para el material Timberfill con el objetivo de obtener las mejores propiedades a tracción. However, these temperature gradients must be minimized to develop reliable monitoring systems. In this project, the objective is to locate the thermal points of an aluminum plate. We will cause the thermal points with a hot gun and with the help of the piezoelectrics installed on the plate we will detect the propagated wave emitted by the heating of the gun. We will analyze the signals received by the piezoelectrics through Principal Component Analysis (PCA), T2 and Q statistics with the R software. Finally, applying different calculation methods to confirm where exactly the defect of the plate is.

The aim of this project is to create a heterogeneous metallic material by means of impact loading to create microstructural gradients across the material dimensions. For this purpose, pure Aluminium was used. A material is said to be heterogeneous when it shows a variation in its crystalline structure and therefore in its mechanical properties. One of the interests of this new branch of material is to present a high ductility as well as a high resistance, which is unprecedented given the contradictory aspect of these characteristics. During the impact loading, a force is applied suddenly and for a short time to a material to simulate extreme loading conditions. It deforms the material, these deformations induce a local displacement of material, which in turn gives the material a property gradient within its structure. In this project, several numbers of impacts at room temperature performed on the material surface were evaluated recording the impact force, impact energy and strain distribution. It was found an increased force with the number of impacts and a high deformation degree that decreases from the surface to the interior of the sample. The heterogeneous strain distribution across the sample dimensions gave rise to a hard surface and a soft zone in the interior of the tested sample. The tensile tests indicated that after four impacts the yield strength close to the surface’s sample (130 MPa) increased three times concerning the material free of impacts (42 MPa). Moreover, the yield strength showed variations ranging from 130 MPa to 75 MPa as function of the distance to the impacted surface, confirming the material's gradient properties. A similar behavior was observed for ductility properties. The elongation decreases on the impacted surface with the number of impacts and increases in the zones far from the impacted surroundings. En este proyecto se evaluaron varios números de impactos a temperatura ambiente realizados sobre la superficie del material registrando la fuerza de impacto, la energía de impacto y la distribución de la deformación. Se encontró un aumento de la fuerza con el número de impactos y un alto grado de deformación que disminuye desde la superficie hacia el interior de la muestra. Fibre and textile-reinforced mortars are increasingly being used for a variety of building applications, including the strengthening of masonry structures. Lime mortars reinforced with sustainable fibres (such as vegetable or cellulosic fibres) may provide an interesting solution. In this paper, a mixture of commercial lime with 20% metakaolin addition was used to produce composites reinforced with non-woven flax fabrics that were cured at different moisture contents (from 0 to 100%) for 7 or 14 days in a CO2 incubator. The composites were char- acterised to determine their flexural behaviour, carbonation level and microstructure. According to the results, no differences exist in the flexural strength of the composites made in the moisture range of 33%–66%. At 7 days of curing, they attained Modulus of Rupture (MOR) values that exceeded 5.5. MPa. Moreover, it was observed that under high moisture conditions, the permeability of the fibres allows for CO2 access, despite the saturation of the pores of the matrix – allowing a reaction in the vicinity of the fibres –, while under dry conditions, the fibre’s moisture retention does not permit the carbonation of the matrix in their vicinity, even though complete carbonation takes place after 14 days, Postprint (published version)

Les tensions residuals son tensions presents a una peça d’un material, sense l’aplicació d’un esforç extern. La presencia d’aquestes tensions pot suposar canvis en la integritat estructural de les peces, afectant a les propietats a fatiga i d’altres. Actualment hi ha diferents mètodes para analitzar i extreure el valor de les tensions residuals o internes. En aquest treball es desenvolupa el mètode de “holedrilling” amb la modificació de DIC. Per tant, el principal objectiu del treball es extreure els valors de tensions internes de provetes laminades amb geometria cònica. En primer lloc, abans d’aplicar el mètode comentat sobre les provetes laminades, es realitza una validació a provetes sotmeses a tracció i un cop comprovat que els resultats són els esperats, es procedeix amb les provetes laminades. El mètode consisteix en realitzar una perforació , fet que causarà una relaxació en les tensions i modificaran les dimensions del forat. Analitzant la deformació produïda i mitjançant les corresponents equacions, s’extreu el valor de tensions residuals. Per a analitzar les deformacions, s’utilitza el software VIC-3D, que mitjançant fotografies del abans i el després de la perforació i, amb l’ajuda d’un patró de pintura a nivell superficial, retorna el valor de deformació al voltant del forat. Per altre banda, es desenvolupen simulacions amb el software Abaqus, i d’aquesta forma, es poden comparar els valors de la simulació amb els experimentals. En aquest cas, la majoria dels valors de tensions residuals extrets mitjançant la simulació són semblants als calculats experimentalment., Las tensiones residuales son tensiones presentes en una pieza de un material sin la necesidad de la aplicación de un esfuerzo externo. Actualmente hay diferentes métodos para analizar y extraer los valores de las tensiones residuales o internas. En este trabajo se desarrolla el método de “hole-drilling” con la modificación de DIC. Por tanto, el principal objetivo del trabajo es extraer los valores de tensiones residuales de probetas laminadas con geometría cónica. En primer lugar, antes de aplicar el método comentado sobre las probetas laminadas, se realiza una validación con probetas sometidas a tracción y, una vez comprobado que los resultados son los esperados, se procede con las probetas laminadas. El método consiste en realizar una perforación, hecho que causará una relajación de las tensiones y modificarán las dimensiones del agujero. Analizando la deformación producida y mediante las correspondientes ecuaciones se extraen los valores de tensiones residuales. Para analizar las deformaciones, se utiliza el software VIC-3D, que mediante fotografías del antes y después del agujero, y con la ayuda de un patrón de pintura a nivel superficial, devuelve el valor de deformación alrededor del agujero. Por otro lado, se han desarrollado simulaciones con el software Abaqus, y de este modo, comparar los valores de la simulación con los experimentales. On the other hand, some simulations have been developed with the Abaqus software to compare the simulation results with the experimental ones. In this case, most of the values of residual stresses derived by the simulation are similar to the experimental values.

Polycrystalline cubic boron nitrides (PcBNs) are composites widely used as cutting tool materials due to their exceptional high hardness and wear resistance. Investigation of their micromechanical properties is key for optimizing PcBN’s performance through microstructural design. Within this context, high-speed nanoindentation is proposed and implemented, for three different PcBN grades, to correlate microstructure with local mechanical properties. A total of 40,000 imprints were performed in each grade. The obtained mechanical maps and data sets are statistically treated following two deconvolution approaches: 1D and 2D Gaussian fitting. The use of high-speed nanoindentation is validated not only by the reliable assessment of the intrinsic mechanical properties of cBN particles, binder and interphase region, but also by the successful mirroring of microstructural assemblage within the mechanical maps attained. Comparison of the results determined from 1D and 2D gaussian representations are in satisfactory agreement. En este trabajo se caracteriza numéricamente el comportamiento mecánico de dos probetas de materiales compuestos reforzados con fibras orgánicas utilizando la teoría de Serial-Paralelo Rul of Mixture (SP-RoM), los modelos son calibrados en base a un arduo trabajo iterativo que se contrasta con resultados experimentales encontrados en la bibliografía. Dentro de la información tratada en este documento se encontrará un resumen de la importancia de estudiar numéricamente este tipo de materiales compuestos y poder caracterizarlos correctamente para su utilización en el diseño mecánico, para esto se realizaron una serie de simulaciones 3D estáticas y no lineales que consideran daño en la matriz y fibra de dos compuestos reforzados por fibras naturales: el primero de resina de poliéster reforzada con fibra Jowar larga y orientada y otra con hormigón espumado con fibra corta de henequén no orientada. Se realizó un trabajo iterativo para estudiar las propiedades de los materiales y su respuesta mecánica, teniendo en cuenta parámetros como la energía de fractura, Reglas de fluencia y solucionadores como Newton-Raphson y Arc-Length. En aquest estudi s’avalua el comportament mecànic i higromètric de la tàpia o terra compactada, un material de construcció llegat de l’antiguitat i que està començant a ser utilitzat i estudiat per el seu poc cost energètic de producció, de forma més específica, l’estudi analitza el comportament i rendiment de la tàpia afegint a la composició fibres de canemuixa, el tall de la planta de cànem, que ha demostrat tenir propietats aïllants molt bones, i que destaca per provenir d’una planta amb petjada de carboni negativa, és a dir, que el CO2 que emet durant tota la seva vida útil és menor al CO2 que absorbeix. Per la realització de l’estudi s’han produït 12 series de provetes variant la concentració de morter utilitzat referent al pes total de la mostra,(20%,40%,60%), i la concentració fibres de canemuixa referent al volum total de la mostra (5%,10%,15%), diferenciant fibres gruixudes i fibres fines, i utilitzant graves de fins a 12 mm de granulometria, prioritzant graves de granulometria més fina, de 2 i 4mm. Utilitzant unes tubs per l’encofrat i deixant les provetes assecar durant uns dies. Una vegada desemmotllades s’han produït de forma diària revisions del pes i assajos d’ultrasons per fer observació de la humitat, evolució de la densitat o la rigidesa dinàmica. Passades dues setmanes s’han realitzat assajos de compressió a totes les provetes per poder obtenir diferents propietats mecàniques. Els resultats han destacat la tensió de compressió, el mòdul de Young i la humitat. Disminuint la majoria de propietats mecàniques quant més volum de fibres de canemuixa s’han utilitzat a les mostres, a les provetes d’un 20% i 40% de morter. A diferencia d’aquestes dues anteriors concentracions, en el cas de les provetes amb un 60% de morter aquesta tendència a disminuir les propietats mecàniques es reverteix, augmentant molt en el valors de tensió. La identificació de punts calents tèrmics en estructures és un camp del monitoratge que encara es troba en fase preliminar. És, per això, que cal continuar amb l’estudi per trobar eines i metodologies que permetin detectar, localitzar i determinar la mida del dany que se li pot arribar a ocasionar a les estructures. Com a conseqüència, aquest tipus de dany posa en perill la integritat d’aquestes, així com l’alt risc de pèrdues de vides humanes. L’objectiu d’aquest treball és construir un model basat en dades utilitzant eines d’aprenentatge automàtic per a la identificació de diferents punts calents en una estructura, utilitzant sensors piezo‐ elèctrics. Per complir aquest propòsit, es va dissenyar un experiment al laboratori de CoDAlab (que es troba en l’Escola d’Enginyeria de Barcelona Est, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya) que consisteix en la instal∙lació de 12 sensors (que poden funcionar com a sensor o actuador) en una placa d’alumini, on es van aplicar 12 punts calents (que són els principals defectes de l’estructura) amb l’ajuda d’una pistola de calor i es va captar la informació de resposta mitjançant una càmera tèrmica i un programa informàtic orientat cap a la detecció de danys en estructures anomenat Labview. Finalment, aquesta informació es va processar creant 12 bases de dades corresponents a cada actuador. Amb la informació pertanyent a un actuador, s’ha realitzat la prova d’un total de 14 algoritmes de regressió diferents, dels quals s’ha triat aquell que maximitza el valor de l’ajust donat pel coeficient de determinació R2 i minimitza l’error absolut mitjà. Amb aquest, s’ha procedit a crear el model de regressió amb la resta d’informació dels actuadors, on s’ha seleccionat com a variable d’entrada la informació dels senyals i, com a variables de sortida a predir, la temperatura, posició X, posició Y i àrea del punt calent. Para ello, se ha procedido a diseñar un experimento en el laboratorio de CoDAlab (Escuela de Ingeniería de Barcelona Este, Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña) que consiste en la instalación de 12 sensores (que pueden funcionar como sensor o ac‐ tuador) en una placa de aluminio, en la cual se han aplicado 12 puntos calientes (los cuales son los defectos principales de la estructura) con la ayuda de una pistola de calor y se ha captado la infor‐ mación de respuesta mediante una cámara termográfica y un programa informático orientado a la detección de daños en estructuras denominado Labview. Finalmente, esta información de señales se ha procesado creando 12 bases de datos pertenecientes a cada actuador. Con la información por actuador, se ha realizado la prueba de un total de 14 regresores distintos, de los cuales se ha elegido aquel que maximiza el valor del ajuste dado por el coeficiente de deter‐ minación R2 y minimiza el error absoluto medio. Therefore, it is necessary to do an in‐depth analysis on the subject to find tools and methodologies that allow the detection, location, and determination of the size of the damage caused in the structures. Due to such damage, the structure’s integrity may be compromised, which can ultimately put human lives in danger. The main objective of this project is to develop a machine learning based model that identifies different hot spots using data acquired from piezoelectric sensors. For this purpose, an experiment was designed in the CoDAlab laboratory (Barcelona East School of Engineering, Polytechnic University of Catalonia) where 12 sensors (that can dually function as sensor or actuator) were installed on an aluminum sheet. On the sheet, 12 hot spots (which are the main defects of the structure) were applied with the help of a heat gun, and the response signal was captured with a thermal camera and a damaged detection oriented software called Labview. Finally, the data was processed creating 12 unique dataframes corresponding to each actuator. With the acquired data of a single actuator, 14 different machine learning regression models were tested. The final model was selected based on performance metrics: highest R2 coefficient value and lowest mean absolute error. In the developed model, the input values were the signal data from the sensors and, for the output values were the temperature, X position, Y position and area of the hot spot. In addition, a neural network was implemented for locating hot spots as a more efficient alternative method to the regression model. The Wide Field Monitor (WFM) is a coded mask instrument that is one of the four instruments that compose the scientific payload of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission (eXTP), designed to study the state of matter under conditions of extreme density, gravity and magnetism. This work assesses its design through mechanical simulations, focusing on the behaviour of the coded mask, its frames and the collimator. A big emphasis is placed on the study of the pretension of the mask, provided by the pretension mechanism, which consists of the frames and a series of uniformly distributed bolts and is required to give the mask enough rigidity to fulfil its scientific requirements. The mechanical simulations have consisted of two step analyses, which have a first static step that applies the pretension to the system and a second step that performs a modal analysis. The WFM has been assessed progressively, first studying the mask, then including the frames, and the final simulations have included the collimator. The optimisation of the pretension has been one of the focuses, and a code that employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) has been developed for that purpose. The analyses have shown that pretension is an effective way of increasing the rigidity of the mask by showing a very significant increase in natural frequency when pretension was applied. Moreover, the current design of the pretension mechanism has been shown to be capable of applying the pretension effectively and solving the issues of a previous design. The, currently in-progress, execution of the GA shows a good evolution toward an optimal set of solutions, as the proposed solutions by the GA take shapes following what the analyses throughout this work indicated would improve the results. Finally, the analyses with the collimator, which tested various design differences, have shown which part should be reinforced in the final design.

La modificació superficial làser és una moderna tècnica per a millorar les propietats dels materials. En aquest treball de fi de màster s’ha aplicat la modificació làser a mostres d’acer inoxidable austenític metaestable amb l’objectiu d’optimitzar els paràmetres de control: freqüència, intensitat, velocitat d’escaneig, distancia entre línies i orientació de línies. Per aquest motiu, la caracterització de l’acer tractat per un làser Nd:YLF de feix polsat de nanosegons s’ha realitzat mitjançant l’avaluació de la seva duresa, rugositat, microestructura i comportament a tracció. La duresa ha estat estudiada a partir d’assajos de microduresa Vickers, la rugositat a partir de microscòpia confocal i l’ús d’un perfilòmetre, la microestructura es va estudiar fent servir la difracció de raigs X i finalment es varen efectuar assajos de tracció. La relació de major duresa conjuntament amb la mínima rugositat va ser obtinguda fent servir intensitats altes (4 A) i velocitats elevades (5 bit/s). Altres paràmetres com la freqüència i l’orientació de les línies no van tenir un gran impacte en les característiques estudiades. En canvi, es va observar com l’apropament entre línies disminuïa la rugositat de les mostres. En este trabajo de fin de máster se ha aplicado la modificación láser en muestras de acero inoxidable austenítico metaestable con el objetivo de optimizar los parámetros de control: frecuencia, intensidad, velocidad de escaneo, distancia entre líneas y orientación de las líneas. Por ello, la caracterización del acero tratado por un láser Nd:YLF con haz pulsado de nanosegundos se ha realizado mediante la evaluación de su dureza, rugosidad, microestructura y comportamiento a tracción. La dureza fue estudiada a partir de ensayos de microdureza Vickers, la rugosidad a partir de microscopía confocal y el uso de un perfilómetro, la microestructura se estudió utilizando la difracción de rayos X y finalmente se efectuaron ensayos de tracción. The hardness was studied by performing Vickers microhardness tests, the roughness by using confocal microscopy and the use of a profilometer, the microstructure was studied using X-ray diffraction and finally tensile tests were accomplished. The ratio of higher hardness together with minimum roughness was obtained when using high intensities (4 A) together with high scanning speeds (5 bit/s). Other parameters such as the frequency or the orientation of the lines did not have a great impact on the characteristics studied. On the other hand, it was observed how the approach between lines decreased the roughness of the samples. En aquesta memòria es recull un estudi bibliogràfic dels mètodes emprats en acoblaments compòsitcompòsit i compòsit-metall, excloent-ne els adhesius. S’ha recapitulat els mètodes més habituals en una cartografia visual i una taula comparativa, on s’hi han avaluat criteris d’aplicació, desenvolupament, cost i impacte mediambiental. En paral·lel, s’ha fet un recull bibliogràfic al voltant de tres mètodes d’interès per no ser àmpliament coneguts en la indústria: el Comeld™, on mitjançant una texturació superficial per canó d’electrons es milloren les unions compòsit-metall; la soldadura híbrida, on amb un film termoplàstic intermediari es permet soldar compòsits termoestables amb mètodes convencionals; i el reblat electrohidràulic, que per mitjà d’una onda de xoc en medi aquós permet reblar a alta velocitat làmines fines, no factibles per reblat convencional., En esta memoria se recoge un estudio bibliográfico de los métodos utilizados en uniones compositecomposite y composite-metal, en exclusión de los adhesivos. Se ha recapitulado los métodos más habituales en una cartografía visual y una tabla comparativa, donde se ha evaluado criterios de aplicación, desarrollo, coste e impacto medioambiental. En paralelo, se ha hecho un resumen bibliográfico alrededor de tres métodos de interés por el hecho de no ser ampliamente conocidos en la industria: el Comeld™, donde mediante una texturización superficial por cañón de electrones se mejoran las uniones composite-metal; la soldadura híbrida, donde con un film termoplástico intermediario se resulta posible soldar composites termoestables con métodos convencionales; y el clinchado electrohidráulico, el cual mediante una onda de choque en medio acuosos permite clinchar a alta velocidad láminas finas, no factibles por clinchado convencional., In this work consists of a bibliographical review of the different methods and techniques used in composite-composite and composite-metal joints, excluding adhesives. The most prominent techniques have been gathered in a visual cartography and a comparative table, where criteria of application, development, cost and environmental impact have been evaluated. At the same time, a bibliographical review of three techniques of interest due to their novelty has compiled: Comeld™, in which through surface texturing by electron beam composite-metal joints might be improved, hybrid welding, where by an intermediate thermoplastic film the welding of thermoset composites through conventional techniques is achieved, and electrohydraulic clinching, in which through a waterpropagated shockwave a high-speed clinching is achieved, leading to the possibility of thinner clinched unions.

El reciclatge dels elastòmers ha esdevingut una peça més a tenir en compte davant el marc climàtic actual. Els cautxús d’etilè propilè diè (EPDM) són un material utilitzat àmpliament en el món industrial i el seu desvulcanitzat que permet el reciclatge juga un paper molt important per a fer una passa més cap a un món més sostenible. En aquest treball s’ha estudiat la capacitat de reutilitzar residus d’EPDM industrials desvulcanitzats amb una tècnica combinada termomecànica i microones per incorporació a una matriu de natural rubber (NR), l’elastòmer d’origen natural. Els materials obtinguts s’han caracteritzat mesurant la resistència màxima a tracció, la deformació, la duresa i el comportament acústic. S’ha estudiat la degradació a una temperatura que simula la radiació solar. Les mostres s’han analitzat també amb TGA i SEM. S’ha vist que una matriu d’NR pot incloure fins a un 40-50% d’EPDM desvulcanitzat conservant unes bones propietats mecàniques. La incorporació d’òxid de silici suposa una millora de les propietats i la duresa, així com de la temperatura de degradació. No obstant, s’ha observat que totes millores presentades es perden davant la degradació tèrmica de les mostres., The recycling of elastomers has become another piece to consider in the face of the current climate framework. Ethylene propylene diene (EPDM) rubbers are a widely used material in the industrial world and their devulcanization, which allows recycling, plays a very important role in taking a step towards a more sustainable world. This work has studied the ability to reuse industrialized EPDM waste devulcanized with a combined thermomechanical and microwave technique by incorporation into a matrix of natural rubber (NR), the elastomer of natural origin. The materials obtained have been characterized by measuring the maximum tensile stress, deformation, hardness and acoustic behaviour. Degradation has been studied at a temperature that simulates solar radiation. Samples were also analysed with TGA and SEM. It has been shown that an NR matrix can include up to 40-50% of vulcanized EPDM while retaining good mechanical properties. The incorporation of silicon oxide improves the properties and hardness, as well as the degradation temperature. However, it has been observed that all the improvements presented are lost due to the thermal degradation of the samples.

Un dels materials més rellevants en les últimes dècades és la zircònia (ZrO2) degut a les seves excel·lents propietats mecàniques. Degut a les seves propietats, aquest material s’ha utilitzat àmpliament en aplicacions dentals i ortopèdiques. Avui en dia continua sent un material àmpliament estudiat, ja que es volen trobar noves maneres per millora l’osteointegració i prevenir els problemes relacionats amb la degradació hidrotèrmica. En aquest projecte final de grau (TFG), l’objectiu principal és aconseguir conformar un implant dental. S’ha intentat conformar amb tres materials base zircònia; 3Y-ZrO2, 12Ce-ZrO2 i un composite de 3Y/12Ce-ZrO2. Per tal d’aconseguir aquest objectiu s’han utilitzat dues tècniques, la impressió 3D, mitjançant la tècnica del Robocasting també coneguda com Direct Ink Writing (DIW), i el fresat. En el transcurs del TFG, s’ha hagut de caracteritzar la pols de partida, en termes de mida de gra i cristal·linitat, així com les propietats tant microestructurals com mecàniques mitjançant tècniques avançades de caracterització (com per exemple microscòpia electrònica de rastreig, difracció de rajos X, entre altres) dels diferents materials tant processats mitjançant tècniques de processat tradicional, Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) com mitjançant impressió 3D. In this Bachelor’s degree project, the main objective is to achieve the shaping of a dental implant. Three zirconia-based materials have been used; 3Y-ZrO2, 12Ce-ZrO2 and a composite of 3Y/12Ce-ZrO2. To achieve this objective, two techniques have been used, 3D printing, using the Robocasting technique also known as Direct Ink Writing (DIW), and milling. In the course of this Bachelor’s degree project, it has been necessary to characterise the starting powders, in terms of grain size and crystallinity, as well as the microstructural and mechanical properties by means of advanced characterization techniques (such as scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray Diffraction, among others) of the different materials both processed by traditional processing techniques, Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP) and 3D printing. Finally, both microstructural and mechanical properties have been investigated under service conditions, so the samples have been hydrothermally degraded. The characterization of the powder as well as its crystallinity has allowed to observe that the different materials studied in this Bachelor’s degree project can be 3D printed, and that their resulting mechanical properties are not much affected in comparison with the properties obtained when the materials have been made by traditional techniques. Wear-resistant coatings development is progressively increasing steeply due to their advantages when applied to mechanical components subjected to abrasive and destructive environments. Titanium nitride (TiN) coating is typically used to enlarge tools and components’ service life and improve their surface quality. On the other hand, AlTiSiN coating intends to be applied to more aggressive environments such as spatial satellites components exposed to solar radiation, extremely high temperatures, and random particles impact. In this work, specimens of Inconel 718 (IN718) were fabricated via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), and physical vapour deposition (PVD)-deposited with TiN and AlTiSiN as coatings to mechanically and chemically characterise their surface. In this respect, microhardness testing and chemical analysis via glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) were performed. Later, roughness and wear behaviour analyses were carried out to evaluate the mechanical performance of both coatings and their surface and morphological features. Per tal de fer front al problema dels residus de plàstic i participar al desenvolupament d'una economia circular en la indústria del cautxú, s’ha proposat la creació de materials amb residus de pneumàtics, anomenats “ground tyre rubber” (GTR), per reforçar el polímer àcid polilàctic (PLA) , un termoplàstic fràgil i de base biològica. La compatibilitat entre aquests dos polímers s’ha optimitzat amb l'ús de cautxú natural (NR) com a tercer component, amb l'objectiu d'encapsular les partícules de GTR. Les mescles han sigut vulcanitzades dinàmicament amb “dicumyl peroxide” (DCP). S’han investigat els efectes dels paràmetres de procés (temps de residència, temperatura de procés) així com els efectes dels paràmetres dels materials (mida de les partícules de GTR, proporció i origen de l'PLA i de el cautxú) sobre les propietats mecàniques de les mescles. Les millors propietats mecàniques s’han obtingut amb l'ús d'una mida de partícules més fines (diàmetre <63 micres) per a cada tipus de mescla amb una base de PLA-GTR, amb o sense NR. A més, el fet de reemplaçar 1/3 de NR per GTR en les mescles ternàries PLA / NR / GTR ha permès augmentar el mòdul elàstic, el límit elàstic, la tenacitat i la resistència a l'impacte fins a una incorporació de 15 wt.% de cautxú reciclat. Els resultats han sigut atribuïts a (i) una encapsulació eficaç que permet una distribució homogènia de les partícules de GTR, (ii) una bona compatibilitat entre el NR i ambdós PLA i GTR (iii) un reforç mecànic a causa del fenomen de cristal·lització induït per deformació de l’NR., Para hacer frente al problema de los residuos de plástico y participar en el desarrollo de una economía circular en la industria de caucho, la creación de materiales que contienen residuos de neumáticos, llamados ground tire rubber (GTR), para reforzar el ácido poliláctico (PLA), un termoplástico frágil y de base biológica, fue propuesta. Las mezclas fueron vulcanizadas dinámicamente con dicumyl peroxide (DCP) durante el proceso de mezcla por fundición. Los efectos de los parámetros de proceso (tiempo de residencia, temperatura de proceso) así como los parámetros de los materiales (tamaño de las partículas de GTR, proporción y origen del PLA y del caucho) sobre las propiedades mecánicas de las mezclas fueron investigados. El uso de un tamaño de partículas más fino (diámetro <63 µm) dio las mejores propiedades de tensión para cada tipo de mezcla con una basa de PLA-GTR, con o sin NR. Además, remplazar 1/3 del NR por GTR en las mezclas ternarias PLA/NR/GTR permitió aumentar el módulo elástico, el límite elástico, la tenacidad y la resistencia al impacto hasta una incorporación de 15 wt.% de caucho reciclado. Los resultados fueron atribuidos a (i) una encapsulación eficaz que permite una distribución homogénea de las partículas de GTR, (ii) una buena compatibilidad entre el NR y ambos PLA y GTR (iii) un refuerzo mecánico debido al fenómeno de cristalización inducida por deformación del NR., To face the problem of plastic wastes generation and to participate in the development of a circular economy of the rubber industry, the design of materials incorporating waste ground tire rubber (GTR) to toughen the Polylactic Acid (PLA), a brittle biobased thermoplastic, has been proposed. The compatibility between these two polymers was optimized by using natural rubber (NR) as a third component, aiming to encapsulate the GTR particles. The blends were dynamically vulcanized with dicumyl peroxide (DCP) during melt-blending. The effects of the processing parameters (residence time, processing temperature) as well as the material parameters (GTR particles size, PLA and rubber content and origin) on the mechanical properties of the blends were investigated. The finest GTR particles size (diameter <63 µm) was found to render the best tensile properties for all type of PLA-GTR based blend, with or without NR. In addition, the replacement of 1/3 of the NR by GTR in ternary PLA/NR/GTR blends resulted in the improvement of the elastic modulus, the yield strength, the toughness and the impact strength using up to 15 wt.% of wastes rubber. The simulation of structural problems involving the deformations of volumetric bodies is of paramount importance in many areas of engineering. Although the use of tetrahedral elements is extremely appealing, tetrahedral discretisations are generally known as very stiff and are hence often avoided in typical simulation workflows. The development of mixed displacement–pressure approaches has allowed to effectively overcome this problem leading to a class of locking-free elements which can effectively compete with hexahedral discretisations while retaining obvious advantages in the mesh generation step. Despite such advantages the adoption of the technology within commercial codes is not yet pervasive. This can be attributed to two different reasons: the difficulty in making use of standard constitutive libraries and the implied continuity of the pressure, which makes the application of the method questionable in the context of multi-material problems. Current paper proposes the adoption of the volumetric strain instead of the pressure as a nodal value. Such choice leads to the definition of a modified strain making the use of standard strain-driven constitutive laws straightforward. At the same time, the continuity of the volumetric strain across multimaterial interfaces can be understood as a sort of kinematic constraint (stresses can still remain discontinuous across material interfaces). En las ´ultimas tres d´ecadas, la fabricaci´on aditiva se ha desarrollado significativamente. Aunque inicialmente se centr´o s´olo en los pol´ımeros, r´apidamente se diversific´o a otras familias de materiales como los metales. Las ventajas de esta t´ecnica son numerosas, la reducci´on de las p´erdidas materiales y la disminuci´on de los costos de producci´on siendo las m´as importantes. Las aplicaciones de la fabricaci´on de aditivos han sido principalmente en el sector del transporte. En este ´ambito, en el que el objetivo es reducir el peso manteniendo al mismo tiempo buenas propiedades mec´anicas, la aleaci´on AlSi10Mg aqu´ı estudiada ya se utiliza ampliamente, por lo que la t´ecnica de fabricaci´on aditiva permitir´ıa combinar las ventajas. Por lo tanto, el objetivo de este proyecto es caracterizar las muestras de esta aleaci´on obtenidas por Fusi´on L´aser Selectiva para establecer una relaci´on entre la microestructura, las propiedades mec´anicas y los par´ametros de impresi´on utilizados. Con este fin, en Saarbr¨ucken (Alemania) se produjeron tres grupos de muestras variando los siguientes par´ametros: potencia del l´aser (P), velocidad de impresi´on (v) y distancia entre pasos del l´aser (d). La prueba de flexi´on a 4 puntos, que no requiere la preparaci´on previa de la muestra, se llev´o a cabo en primero. Sin embargo, una vez hecho esto, las piezas ten´ıan que ser preparadas para las dem´as pruebas. Un estudio anterior sobre la misma aleaci´on permiti´o establecer un protocolo adecuado. Una vez completado este paso, las t´ecnicas de caracterizaci´on, como la observaci´on con microscopio ´optico y electr´onico de barrido y la difracci´on de electrones retrodispersados, permitieron un estudio microestructural. En paralelo, pruebas como la microdureza, la nanoindentaci´on o el ”nanoscratch”(nanorayado) se a˜nadieron a la prueba de flexi´on de 4 puntos para estudiar las propiedades mec´anicas. Los resultados obtenidos mediante las diversas pruebas realizadas, Over the last three decades, additive manufacturing has improved significantly. Although it initially focused only on polymers, it quickly diversified to other families of materials such as metals. The advantages of this technique are numerous, with the reduction of material waste and lower production costs being the most important. Applications for additive manufacturing have mainly been in the aerospace and automotive fields. In this field, where the aim is to reduce weight while maintaining good mechanical properties, the AlSi10Mg alloy studied here is already widely used and the additive manufacturing technique would therefore bring its own advantages. Thus, the objective of this project is to characterise samples of this alloy obtained by Selective Laser Fusion in order to establish a relationship between the microstructure, the mechanical properties and the printing parameters used. For this purpose, three sets of samples were produced in Saarbr¨ucken (Germany) by varying the following parameters: laser power (P), printing speed (v) and hatch spacing (d). The 4-point bending test, which does not require sample preparation, was carried out first. However, once this was done, the parts had to be prepared for further testing. An earlier study on the same alloy enabled a suitable protocol to be established. Once this stage was completed, characterisation techniques such as observation with a scanning electron microscope and optical microscope or even backscattered electron diffraction allowed a microstructural study. In parallel, tests such as microhardness, nanoindentation or nanoscratch were added to the 4-point bending test to study the mechanical properties. The results obtained from the various tests made it possible to establish a link between the printing parameters, the microstructure and the mechanical properties. Indeed, the samples that had been exposed for a longer period of time to a more powerful laser showed weaker mechanical properties as well as a, Au long des trois derni`eres d´ecennies, la fabrication additive s’est d´evelopp´ee de mani`ere importante. Ainsi, l’objectif de ce projet est de caract´eriser des ´echantillons de cet alliage obtenus par Fusion Laser S´elective afin d’´etablir une relation entre la microstructure, les propri´et´es m´ecaniques et les param`etres d’impression utilis´es. Pour ce faire, trois sets d’´echantillons furent produits `a Sarrebruck (Allemagne) en faisant varier les param`etres suivants : la puissance du laser (P), la vitesse d’impression (v) et la distance entre les passages du laser (d). L’essai de flexion `a 4 points ne n´ecessitant pas de pr´eparation pr´ealable des ´echantillons fut r´ealis´e en premier. Toutefois, une fois celui-ci effectu´e, les pi`eces durent ˆetre pr´epar´ees pour la suite des essais. Une ´etude men´ee ant´erieurement sur le mˆeme alliage a permis d’´etablir un protocole adapt´e. Une fois cette ´etape termin´ee, des techniques de caract´erisation telles que l’observation au microscope ´electronique `a balayage et optique ou encore la diffraction d’´electrons r´etrodiffus´es permirent une ´etude microstructurale. Avui en dia, la necessitat de tenir eines millors i millorades, és un problema que anirà augmentant amb el temps, per això mateix ha començat una cerca d’un mètode per provar materials de molt altes prestacions, en aquesta cerca, la caracterització a temperatures elevades ha sofert un augmentat durant els darrers anys, ja que permet desenvolupar nous materials estructurals per suportar condicions de funcionament molt exigents, com ara les altes temperatures (àleps de turbines, materials ignífugs, etc.). En aquest sentit, la mesura de les propietats mecàniques a temperatures mitjanes i/o altes ha guanyat molt interès durant l'última dècada. Malgrat això, el principal inconvenient que hi ha és la baixa durabilitat de les puntes d’indentació i l’elevat cost d’emprar la maquina ja que l’indentador de diamant es degrada ràpidament a temperatures superiors a 450ºC si entra en contacte amb aliatges metàl·lics. Per això, l’objectiu d’aquesta investigació és estudiar alternatives per substituir el diamant com a punta d’indentació d’alta temperatura. En aquest projecte de recerca de final de carrera, s’analitzarà la soldabilitat de diferents carburs a temperatures mitjanes i altes, entre 600 i 1000 ºC. Per optimitzar les condicions de soldadura es va construir un forn especial amb atmosfera controlable i una càmera per determinar la temperatura i el temps de soldadura adequats. Les interfícies estudiades van ser TiC / TiC; i també TaC / TaC i TiC / TaC amb i sense una làmina metàl·lica enmig (titani i tàntal). Les propietats microestructurals i mecàniques dels carburs i làmines utilitzades en aquest projecte es van investigar a nivells nanomètrics mitjançant tècniques avançades de caracterització., Hoy en día, la necesidad de tener herramientas mejores y mejoradas, es un problema que irá aumentando conforme pase el tiempo, por lo que una búsqueda de un método para probar materiales de muy altas prestaciones ha comenzado. En esta búsqueda, la caracterización de materiales a temperaturas elevadas ha sufrido un aumentado considerable durante los últimos años, ya que permite desarrollar nuevos materiales estructurales para soportar condiciones de funcionamiento muy exigentes, como las altas temperaturas (álabes de turbinas, materiales ignífugos, etc.). En este sentido, la medición de propiedades mecánicas a temperaturas medias y / o altas ha ganado muchísimo interés durante la última década. Sin embargo, el principal inconveniente existente es la baja durabilidad de las puntas de indentación y el elevado coste de emplear la máquina ya que las puntas de diamante se degradan rápidamente a temperaturas superiores a 450ºC al entrar en contacto con aleaciones metálicos. Por ello, el objetivo de esta investigación es estudiar alternativas para sustituir el diamante como punta de indentación de alta temperatura. En este proyecto de fin de carrera, se analiza la soldabilidad de diferentes carburos a temperaturas medias y altas, entre 600 y 1000 ºC. Para optimizar las condiciones de soldadura se construyó un horno especial con atmósfera controlable y una cámara para determinar la temperatura y el tiempo de soldadura adecuados. Las interfaces estudiadas fueron TiC / TiC; y también TaC / TaC y TiC / TaC con y sin una lámina metálica en medio (titanio y tantalio). Las propiedades microestructurales y mecánicas de los carburos y láminas utilizadas se determinaron a escalas nanométricos mediante técnicas avanzadas de caracterización, Nowadays, the need of better and improved tools, it’s an upcoming problem, that’s why a search for a method to test higher properties materials has begun. In this research, material characterization at elevated temperatures has increased over the last years, as it lets develop novel structural materials to withstand the new challenging operating conditions, such as high temperature (i.e., turbine blades, fireproof materials, etc.). In this regard, evaluating the mechanical properties at intermediate and high temperature won interest during the last decade. However, the main inconvenient behind this it’s the durability of the tip indenters and the high cost due to diamond indenter degrades at temperatures higher than 450ºC in contact with metallic alloys. That’s why the focus of this research it’s to study alternatives to change the diamond as a high temperature indenter tip. In this bachelor’s research project, it will be analyzed the weldability of different carbides at intermediate and high temperatures, from 600 to 1000 ºC. To optimize the welding conditions a special furnace with controlled atmosphere and a camera was built in order to determine the proper welding temperature and time. The studied welding interfaces were TiC/TiC; TaC/TaC and TiC/TaC with and without a metallic foil (for example titanium and tantalum). The microstructural and mechanical properties at the nanometric length scale for the carbides and foils used in this bachelor’s degree project were investigated by using advanced characterization techniques.
